Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this research was to compare the penetration ability of calcium silicate-based sealers (iRoot SP and TotalFill BC HiFlow) and an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) into the lateral canals using the single-cone (SC) or continuous wave compaction (CW) obturation techniques. METHODS Ninety single-rooted human teeth received canal instrumentation and diaphanisation before artificial lateral canals were created at 3 different root levels. The specimens were randomly allocated into 6 groups based on the combination of obturation technique and sealer used. Radiographic and photographic measurements evaluated the percentage of sealer penetration. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the penetration ability amongst different types of sealers, obturation methods, and root levels. RESULTS Although TotalFill BC HiFlow sealer combined with the CW technique demonstrated greater sealer penetration at the coronal level (P < .05), the overall penetration ability of iRoot SP, TotalFill BC HiFlow, and AH Plus was not significantly different. The deepest sealer penetration was observed at the apical root level. CONCLUSIONS All sealers showed similar penetration abilities into the lateral canals using the SC or CW techniques in vitro. Calcium silicate-based sealers have comparable penetration ability into lateral canals compared to epoxy resin-based sealers using SC or CW obturation techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacterial infections in lateral canals pose challenges for root canal treatment. This in vitro study aims to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of sonic-assisted methylene blue mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (MB-aPDT) against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in infected lateral canals. METHODS Sixty-five premolars infected with E. faecalis in lateral canals were randomly divided into five groups (n = 13) and treated with : (1) 5.25% NaOCl (positive control); (2) Saline (negative control); (3) Sonic-assisted MB-aPDT; (4) 3% NaOCl + MB-aPDT; (5) 3% NaOCl + sonic-assisted MB-aPDT, respectively. The antibacterial efficacy was evaluated by the colony- counting method (CCM) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). RESULTS Both 5.25% NaOCl and the 3% NaOCl + sonic-assisted MB-aPDT exhibited the most effective while comparable antibacterial effects without significant statistical difference (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the antibacterial effect of the 3% NaOCl + MB-aPDT group was significantly higher compared to that of the sonic-assisted MB-aPDT group (P < 0.05). The SEM results demonstrated notable morphological alterations in E. faecalis across all experimental groups, except for the negative control group. CONCLUSION The concentration of NaOCl can be reduced to a safe level while preserving its antibacterial efficacy through the synergism with the sonic-assisted MB-aPDT in this study.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the accessory canal filling potential of vertical and lateral condensation techniques in simulated root canals. A total of 130 prepared transparent, straight-simulated root canals with nine accessory canals (0.02 mm), prepared at different levels from the apical, were obturated with vertical (n = 100) and 30 lateral condensation (n = 30) techniques. 50.33% of the accessory canals obturated with vertical condensation were completely filled with gutta-percha; 37.78% completely filled with gutta-percha and sealer. 61.11% of the accessory canals were completely filled with sealer only using the lateral condensation technique. The vertical condensation technique filled the accessory canals more frequently than the lateral condensation techniques. The lateral condensation technique was not capable of delivering gutta-percha to any of the accessory canals. The apical third showed the lowest accessory canal filling frequency with both techniques.

3-dimensional Analysis and Literature Review of the Root Canal Morphology and Physiological Foramen Geometry of 125 Mandibular Incisors by Means of Micro-Computed Tomography in a German Population. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to examine the root canal system morphology of mandibular incisors by means of micro-computed tomographic imaging. METHODS The root canal configuration, physiological foramina, frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the size and shape of the physiological foramina of 125 mandibular incisors were investigated by means of micro-CT and 3-dimensional imaging software. Root canal configuration of the coronal, middle, and apical thirds and the physiological foramina number are described by a 4-digit system code. RESULTS The most frequent root canal configurations were 1-1-1/1 (56%), 1-2-1/1 (17.6%), and 1-1-1/2 (10.4%); 9 additional different root canal configurations were observed. Single-rooted incisors showed in 80% 1, in 16% 2, and in 4% 3 physiological foramina, respectively. Accessory canals were found in only 13.6% of the investigated teeth. Connecting canals were observed in 36% of the sample, most often in root canal configurations 1-2-1/1 (12.8%) and 2-2-1/1 (7.2%). The morphologic dimensions of a total of 146 physiological foramina were measured. Their mean wide and narrow diameters were 0.24 mm (standard deviation = 0.1 mm) and 0.23 mm (standard deviation = 0.08 mm) when only 1 physiological foramen was present. The physiological foramen shapes observed were oval (56%), round (28.8%), and irregular (15.2%). CONCLUSIONS The study provides detailed information about the root canal morphology of anterior teeth in a German population. Within the limitations of the study, the authors recommend according to results obtained in this investigation a final physiological foramen preparation size of ISO 30-35; yet, such a decision should be carefully considered on an individual basis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Retrospective description of the 10-year success rate of endodontic treatments with Thermafil (TF). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients treated by postgraduate students in an Endodontics Master's Program (2006-2008) were enrolled. All treated root canals were filled with TF and AH Plus. Teeth satisfying the inclusion criteria (206 teeth in 89 patients) were reexamined clinically and radiographically to estimate a 10-year survival and periapical health. Demographic and medical data were registered; collected information included pre-, intra-, and postoperative variables. Teeth were classified as "healthy" (PAI ≤ 2 in absence of signs/symptoms), "endodontically diseased" (presenting at least one of the following: PAI ≥ 3, signs/symptoms, retreated in the course of the follow-up, or extracted for endodontic reasons), or "non-endodontically diseased" (extracted for non-restorable fractures or periodontal disease). For teeth lost during the 10-year follow-up, details and reason of extraction were analyzed. Two PAI-calibrated examiners assessed outcomes blinded to preoperative status. Bivariate and multilevel analyses were performed (α level set at 0.05). RESULTS At 10 years, 179 (87%) teeth survived and 27 were extracted: 20 for non-endodontic reasons (excluded from success analysis) and 7 for endodontic reasons (considered "endodontically diseased"). Multilevel analysis revealed that the probability of extraction was increased by the presence of preoperative pain (odds ratio = 6.720; 95% confidence interval, 1.483-30.448) and by maxillary location (odds ratio = 2.950; 95% confidence interval, 1.043-8.347). Concerning periapical status, 159/186 teeth (85%) were assessed as "healthy." Multilevel analysis confirmed that maxillary location (odds ratio = 3.908; 95% confidence interval, 1.370-11.146), presence of flare up (odds ratio = 9.914; 95% confidence interval, 2.388-41.163), and fracture occurrence (odds ratio = 35.412; 95% confidence interval, 3.366-372.555) decreased the odds of healing, respectively. CONCLUSIONS After 10 years, teeth filled with Thermafil in a specialist master's program presented a survival and a periapical health comparable to cohorts where root canals were filled with other obturation techniques. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Carrier-based techniques provide time savings for clinicians while satisfying clinical quality criteria for the root filling and consequently the clinical outcome.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate obturation depth and volume by means of micro-CT when filling lateral canals. Material and Methods Thirty single-rooted teeth were used. After instrumentation, three artificial lateral canals were created on each mesial and distal surface (one on each third). The samples were then separated randomly into three groups according to the obturation technique used (n=10): lateral condensation (Group 1), Tagger’s hybrid technique (Group 2) and GuttaCore™ (Group 3). Samples were scanned and data was processed with Avizo software. Depth and volume of the infilling were measured in each lateral canal. Values were expressed as percentages and were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results Mean depth showed statistically significant differences between Group 3 and Groups 1 (p=0.001) and 2 (p=0.003), whereas no significant difference was found between Groups 1 and 2 (p≈1). As for mean volume, significant differences were found between Group 3 and Groups 1 (p=0.01) and 2 (p=0.003) but no differences were found between Groups 1 and 2 (p=1.00). Conclusions GuttaCore provided the best lateral canal sealing among the three techniques compared. Key words:Lateral canals, Micro-CT, obturation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the incidence and distribution of branch canals in mandibular anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred mandibular anterior teeth, comprising 100 central incisors, 100 lateral incisors, and 100 canines, were scanned using a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system. Three-dimensional (3-D) visualization reconstruction of the root canal system and its branch canals was performed on each specimen. Data regarding the number of branch canals, the distance from the anatomical apex to the branch canal, and the orientation of each branch orifice were collected and analyzed. RESULTS One hundred and fifty-three primary branch canals and 35 secondary branch canals were detected in the specimens overall. The incidence of branch canals in mandibular anterior teeth was 34%, with the highest incidence (50%) exhibited in mandibular canines, followed by lateral incisors (29%). Of the 153 primary branch canals found in the mandibular anterior tooth samples investigated, 82.35% appeared within 3 mm of the apical region, while 71.90% were labial and lingual canals. CONCLUSIONS There was regularity in the distribution and orientation of branch canals in mandibular anterior teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This knowledge may be employed as a guide in clinical endodontic therapy.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to compare the in vitro effects of four different root canal sealers on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Materials and Methods: Seventy-five freshly extracted human mandibular premolars were used for the study. Teeth were divided into five groups based on type of root canal sealers used. Gutta-percha was used for all the samples: Group I: AH Plus root canal sealer, Group II: MTA Fillapex root canal sealer, Group III: Apexit root canal sealer, Group IV: Conventional zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) sealer, Group V: Control (unobturated teeth). The teeth were embedded in acrylic resin blocks and fracture force was measured using a universal testing machine (Asian Test Equipments). Data obtained were statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA and post hoc test (Tukey's test). All groups showed statistically significant result (P < 0.05). Results: Group I and Group II showed higher resistance to fracture than other three groups. There was comparable difference in fracture force between Group I and Group II. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference between Group III and Group IV and between Group IV and Group V. Conclusion: Based on this in vitro study, resin-based sealer was more effective as compared to other sealers and the control group. However, no significant differences were observed between ZOE and control group.

Abstract
Introduction: The present study compared the ability of the
endodontic sealers AH Plus, Pulp Canal Sealer and EndoREZ to fill the root canal
system in association with gutta-percha. Methods: Ninety
mandibular premolars were accessed, prepared and divided into three groups of 30
teeth each, according to the sealer used to fill the canals: AH Plus, Pulp Canal
Sealer and EndoREZ. All the teeth were filled using the continuous wave of
condensation technique. The specimens were then decalcified, dehydrated,
rendered transparent, and analyzed by three independent evaluators with 8x
magnification. Chi-squared test (χ2, p < 0.05) was used to compare
the groups in relation to the totally filled, the partially filled and the non
filled ramifications. The same test was used to compare the directions of filled
ramifications and the number of ramifications among the three thirds of the
roots. Results: EndoREZ filled a significantly higher
number of ramifications than AH Plus and Pulp Canal Sealer (χ2, p <
0.05). All the groups showed higher number of totally filled ramifications than
partially filled and unfilled ramifications. The ramifications were more
frequently detected in the apical third, followed by medium and coronal thirds,
respectively (χ2, p < 0.05). The ramifications were more frequently
detected towards lingual direction (χ2, p < 0.05). Conclusion: EndoREZ presented higher ability to fill
the root canal system in association with gutta-percha when compared to AH Plus
and Pulp Canal Sealer. The ramifications were more frequently detected in the
apical third, running in a lingual direction.

Abstract
Background Several techniques have been proposed for root canal filling. New rotary files, with non-standardized taper, are appearing, so, points adapted to the taper of the last instrument used to prepare the canal can help in the obturation process. The aim of this study is to assess the sealing ability of different root canal filling techniques. Material and Methods Root canals from 30 teeth were shaped with Mtwo and divided in three groups; A, standard lateral condensation with size 35 and 20 gutta-percha points; B, standard lateral condensation and injected gutta-percha; C, single gutta-percha point (standardized 35 Mtwo), continuous wave technique and injected gutta-percha. Root surfaces were covered with nail varnish, except for the apical 2 mm, and submerged in a NO3Ag2 solution; apical stain penetration was measured in mm. Data were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test with a 90% confidence interval. Results A and B groups showed stain leakage in the 90% of the cases, whereas it was of 80% for group C. Stain leakage intervals were 1-5 mm for groups A and B and 1-3 mm for group C. There were no statistically significant differences between the three studied groups (p>.05). Conclusions All the analyzed root canal filling techniques showed some apical stain leakage, without significant differences among them. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of gutta-percha and a thermoplastic synthetic polymer (Resilon) to fill simulated lateral canals, using warm vertical compaction. Forty-five single-rooted human teeth were prepared using the rotary crown-down technique. Artificial lateral canals were made at 2, 5, and 8 mm from the working length (WL) in each root. The specimens were divided into three groups (n = 15), according to the filling material: Dentsply gutta-percha (GD), Odous gutta-percha (GO), and Resilon cones (RE). The root canals were obturated using warm vertical compaction, without endodontic sealer. The specimens were subjected to a tooth decalcification and clearing procedure. Filling of the lateral canals was analyzed by digital radiography and digital photographs, using the Image Tool software. The data were subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests at 5% significance. RE had the best filling ability in all root thirds (p < 0.05), with similar results for GO in the coronal third. In the middle and apical thirds, GD and GO had similar results (p > 0.05). Resilon may be used as an alternative to gutta-percha as a solid core filling material for use with the warm vertical compaction technique. The study findings point to the potential benefit of the warm vertical compaction technique for filling lateral canals, and the study provides further information about using Resilon and gutta-percha as materials for the warm vertical compaction technique.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the penetration of a resin/polyester polymer-based material (Resilon Real Seal; SybronEndo Corp., Orange, USA) into simulated lateral canals, and the quality of obturations by different techniques. A total of 30 standardized simulated canals were divided into three groups according to the technique of obturation used: MS (McSpadden), SB (SystemB/Obtura II), and LC (Lateral Condensation). To analyze the penetration of the filling material, the simulated canals were digitalized and the images were analyzed using the Leica QWIN Pro v2.3 software. The data of the middle and apical thirds were separately submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey's test for the comparison of the techniques. Results showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB) in the middle third, and a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups (LC < SB and MS < SB) in the apical third. To analyze the quality of the obturations, the canals were radiographed and evaluated by three examiners. The Kappa test on interexaminer agreement and the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test indicated no significant difference between filling techniques. It was concluded that Resilon achieves greater levels of penetration when associated with thermoplastic obturation techniques.

Abstract
Aim: The aim was to evaluate and compare a novel polyamide polymer based obturating system and Gutta-percha and sealer in filling simulated lateral canals and their homogeneity when used for obturating the root canals. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 freshly extracted human single rooted teeth with fully formed apices were selected for this study. Teeth were de-coronated, and roots were standardized to a working length of 15 mm. Root canal preparation was carried out with rotary Protaper file system in all groups. The specimens were then randomly divided into three groups A, B, and C (n = 20). Ten samples from each group were decalcified and simulated lateral canals were made at 2, 4, and 6 mm from the root apex. Remaining ten samples from each group were maintained calcified. Group A was obturated with SmartSeal system (Prosmart-DRFP Ltd., Stamford, UK). Group B was obturated with sectional backfill method. Group C was obutrated with cold lateral compaction method (control). Decalcified samples from the respective groups were analyzed with digital radiography and photography and the measurement of the linear extension and area of lateral canal filling was done using UTHSCSA (UTHSCSA Image Tool for Windows version 3.0, San Antonio, TX, USA) software. Calcified samples were subjected to cone beam computed tomography image analysis sectioned axially. Results: Group A 92.46 ± 19.45 showed greatest extent of filling in lateral canals and denser homogeneity of oburation, followed by Group B 78.43 ± 26.45 and Group C 52.12 ± 36.67. Conclusions: Polyamide polymer obturation proved to have greater efficiency when compared with Gutta-percha system, when used for obturation with regards to adaptation of the sealer and penetration into the simulated lateral canals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of Resilon (Resilon Research, LLC, North Branford, CT) and 2 types of gutta-percha to fill simulated lateral canals when using the Obtura II system (Model 823-700; Obtura Spartan, Fenton, MO). METHODS Forty-five human single-rooted teeth were selected and subjected to root canal preparation. After that, simulated lateral canals were made at 2, 5, and 8 mm from the working length (WL). The specimens were divided into 3 groups (n = 15) according to the filling material used: Obtura Flow 150 gutta-percha (Obtura flow), Odous Endo Flow gutta-percha (Odous; Odous De Deus Ind e Com. Ltda Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil), and Resilon pellets (Resilon). Root canals were filled using the Obtura II system with the tip inserted to 3 mm from the WL. No sealer was used for root canal obturation. Specimens were subjected to a tooth decalcification and clearing method, and filling of the lateral canals was analyzed by digital radiography and photographs. The measurement of lateral canal filling was done using Image Tool software (UTHSCSA Image Tool for Windows version 3.0, San Antonio, TX). Data were statistically analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance. RESULTS All materials showed an ability to penetrate into the simulated lateral canals, with a minimum percentage of 73% in all thirds of the root canal. CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that gutta-percha and Resilon are solid core materials with a lateral canal filling ability when used with the Obtura II system.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the thermoplasticity of several endodontic filling materials using the Obtura II System at different temperature settings. METHODOLOGY The following materials based on gutta-percha: Regular Obtura (OBT), Obtura Flow 150 (OBT F), Endo Flow (EDF), Odous (ODO) and the synthetic thermoplastic polymer material Resilon (RE) were heated using the Obtura II System at three temperature settings (140, 170 and 200 °C). Samples of the heated materials were placed on the sensor of a digital thermometer (THR-140; Instrutherm, São Paulo, Brazil) to determine their real temperature (RT) when the system was set at 140 °C (from 64.5 to 69 °C), 170 °C (from 73.8 to 77.5 °C) and 200 °C (from 83.6 °C for EDF and 100 °C for RE). Specimens (n = 30) were made by placing samples of each material in metallic ring moulds and compressing them between two glass slabs. After 24 h, specimens (n = 10) were heated at the different settings (RT) and submitted to compression under a 5-kg load. Plasticization was assessed by calculating the differences between the post-compression and initial diameters of each specimen. Data were submitted to anova and Tukey's test at 5% significance. RESULTS At 140 °C, Obtura Flow presented the highest thermoplasticity values and Regular Obtura, the lowest. At 170 °C, Obtura Flow and Resilon demonstrated greater plasticization. Resilon had the highest mean thermoplasticity values at 200 °C. CONCLUSIONS Thermoplasticity values were influenced both by the temperature settings on the Obtura II System and by the type of material analysed. Obtura Flow and Resilon had the highest mean thermoplasticity values.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate (i) the sealing ability of two sealers, mineral trioxide aggregate sealer (MTAS) and Pulp Canal Sealer (PCS), used with gutta-percha utilizing the fluid filtration method, (ii) leaching and surface characteristics in Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) over a period of time. METHODOLOGY Surface characteristics in HBSS were evaluated under the scanning electron microscope after 1 and 28 days, and the leaching of both sealers were assessed by inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectrometry (ICP-AAS). In addition, 24 single rooted extracted teeth were root filled using warm vertical compaction with either MTAS or PCS used as sealers with gutta-percha. Four teeth were used as positive and negative controls. Sealing ability was evaluated after 1 or 28 days using the fluid filtration method. RESULTS Mineral trioxide aggregate sealer exhibited crystalline deposits rich in calcium and phosphorus on its surface when in contact with a physiological solution. These crystalline deposits were absent in PCS and on MTAS stored at 100% humidity. The sealing ability of MTAS was similar to that of PCS. CONCLUSIONS The novel sealer based on mineral trioxide aggregate had comparable sealing ability to a proprietary brand sealer cement. In contact with a simulated body fluid, the MTA sealer released calcium ions in solution that encouraged the deposition of calcium phosphate crystals.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the thermoplasticity of three commercial brands of gutta-percha (Tanari, Dentsply 0.06, and Roeko), and of the TC system. Materials and Methods: Standardized specimens were fabricated from the materials to be evaluated. Specimens were placed in water at 70°C for 60 seconds. Following that, they were positioned between two glass slabs and each set was compressed by a 5kg weight. Images of the specimens before and after compression were digitized and analyzed by the Image Tool software. The flow capacity of each material was confirmed by the difference between the initial and final areas of each sample. Results: The resulting data were analyzed by ANOVA. The TC system presented the greatest thermoplasticity values (p<0.05). Among the gutta-percha cones, the Roeko brand showed higher thermoplasticity than the others (p<0.05). Conclusion: The gutta-percha from TC system present good thermoplasticity capacity.

Abstract
The present study compared the frequency, location, and direction of accessory canals filled with two different filling techniques. Sixty-four mandibular first molars were accessed, prepared, and divided into two groups of 32 teeth each. The teeth from group A and group B were filled using the hydraulic vertical condensation technique and the continuous wave of condensation technique, respectively. The specimens were then decalcified, dehydrated, rendered transparent, and analyzed by three independent evaluators. There was no significant difference (t test, p < 0.05) between the two groups in relation to the total number of filled ramifications. Moreover, there was no significant difference among the three thirds of the roots in relation to the number of filled ramifications (analysis of variance, p < 0.05). The filled ramifications were more frequently detected toward lingual, buccal, distal-lingual, and distal-buccal directions. It was concluded that the two filling techniques are not different in relation to the frequency, location, and direction of the ramifications filled.

Abstract
This in vitro study evaluated the ability of a warm gutta-percha obturation system Thermafil to fill lateral channels in presence/absence of smear layer. Forty single-rooted extracted human teeth were randomly divided into two groups for which different irrigation regimens were used: group A, 5 ml of 5% NaOCl + 2.5 ml of 3.6% H(2)O(2); group B, 5 ml of 5% NaOCl 5% + 2.5 ml of 17% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. A conventional crown-down preparation technique was employed. Obturation was performed using epoxy resin-based cement (AH Plus) and a warm gutta-percha plastic carrier system (Thermafil). Specimens were cleared in methyl salicylate and analyzed under a stereomicroscope to evaluate the number, length, and diameter of lateral channels. Lateral channels were identified in both groups at medium and apical thirds. Additional samples were prepared for scanning electron microscopy inspection to confirm the presence of smear layer in group A, and the absence of smear layer in group B. All lateral channels resulted filled in both groups. No statistically significant differences regarding number, length, and diameter were observed between the two groups. Smear layer did not prevent the sealing of lateral channels.
