Influence of soil and buildings on outdoor gamma dose rates in São Paulo, Brazil

A large and feasible national survey representative of population exposure to outdoor gamma radiation in urban areas

Background

Although data on outdoor gamma radiation are available for many countries, they have generally been obtained with measurements performed in undisturbed environments instead of in urban areas where most of the population lives. Only one large national survey, with on-site measurements in urban areas, has been identified worldwide, probably due to high costs (e.g., personnel and instrumentation) and difficulties in selecting measuring points.

Methods

A campaign of outdoor gamma radiation measurements has been carried out in the entire Italian territory. All measurement points were selected at the infrastructures of an Italian telecommunications company as representatives of all the possible situations of outdoor exposure to gamma radiation for population in urban areas. Ten replicates of portable gamma (X) detectors carried out all the measurements.

Results

Approximately 4,000 measurements have been performed. They are distributed across 2,901 Italian municipalities, accounting for 75% of the Italian population. The national population-weighted mean of the gamma ambient dose equivalent rate (ADER) is 117 nSv h-1, and it ranges from 62 to 208 nSv h-1 and from 40 to 227 nSv h-1 for 21 regions and 107 provinces, respectively. The average variability at the municipal level, in terms of the coefficient of variation (CV) is 21%, ranging from 3 to 84%. The impact of land coverage and the distance from a building on the outdoor gamma radiation level was assessed with complementary measurements, leading to differences ranging from -40 to 50% and to 50%, respectively.

Conclusion

A representative campaign of outdoor gamma dose rate measurements has been performed in Italy, only in urban areas, to assess the exposure effect due to outdoor gamma radiation on the population. It is the largest national campaign in urban areas worldwide, with a total of 3,876 on-site measurements. The land coverage and the distance from surrounding buildings were recognized to strongly affect outdoor gamma radiation levels, leading to high variability within small areas. The collaboration with a company that owns a network of facilities on a national territory as dense as the residing population made this survey feasible and affordable. Other countries might adopt this methodology to conduct national surveys in urban environments.

Potential Use of Microbial Community Genomes in Various Dimensions of Agriculture Productivity and Its Management: A Review

Agricultural productivity is highly influenced by its associated microbial community. With advancements in omics technology, metagenomics is known to play a vital role in microbial world studies by unlocking the uncultured microbial populations present in the environment. Metagenomics is a diagnostic tool to target unique signature loci of plant and animal pathogens as well as beneficial microorganisms from samples. Here, we reviewed various aspects of metagenomics from experimental methods to techniques used for sequencing, as well as diversified computational resources, including databases and software tools. Exhaustive focus and study are conducted on the application of metagenomics in agriculture, deciphering various areas, including pathogen and plant disease identification, disease resistance breeding, plant pest control, weed management, abiotic stress management, post-harvest management, discoveries in agriculture, source of novel molecules/compounds, biosurfactants and natural product, identification of biosynthetic molecules, use in genetically modified crops, and antibiotic-resistant genes. Metagenomics-wide association studies study in agriculture on crop productivity rates, intercropping analysis, and agronomic field is analyzed. This article is the first of its comprehensive study and prospects from an agriculture perspective, focusing on a wider range of applications of metagenomics and its association studies.

Measurements of activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides in soil samples from Punjab province of Pakistan and assessment of radiological hazards

The natural level of radioactivity in soil is one of the major causes of external gamma rays exposure. It was considered imperative to measure gamma-ray activity concentrations due to naturally occurring, potentially hazardous radionuclides from 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in soil samples from Punjab, the most populated province of Pakistan. The activity concentrations were measured in soil samples collected from all 34 district headquarters of Punjab province using a P-type coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe)-based gamma-ray spectrometer having a relative efficiency of 60%. The mean activity concentrations for 232Th, 226Ra and 40K were found to be 41 +/- 8, 35 +/- 7 and 615 +/- 143 Bq kg(-1), respectively in soil samples from all 34 district headquarters of Punjab. The mean values of radium equivalent index (Ra(eq)) and total annual external gamma radiation dose were found to be 141 +/- 27 Bq kg(-1)and 0.38 mSv, respectively. Since these estimated radiological impact assessment factors are lower than the recommended values there seems to be no potential radiological health hazard associated with the soils from the district headquarters in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Geological studies show that most of the soils in Punjab have developed on the extensive fluviatile deposits of five rivers and a stable ratio of natural activity concentrations is observed in soil samples of the areas under study.
