Abstract
Background Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of stomach is extremely rare. The pathogenesis of SCC of stomach remains unclear. There is only one report that Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection may be involved in the pathogenesis of SCC arising in the stomach ever before. Here, we report a case of Epstein Barr virus infection-associated primary SCC of stomach in a 70-year-old woman. She was presented to the referring hospital with hematemesis. Initial endoscopy revealed a bleeding gastric ulcer in the upper part of gastric corpus and the coagulation therapy was followed. After a 3-month follow-up, endoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor-like protrusion instead of an ulcer. Computed tomography revealed a mass in the upper part of stomach and swollen lymph nodes along with the lesser curvature and para-aortic lymph node. Biopsy could not confirm the definitive diagnosis. We performed total gastrectomy with para-aortic lymph node sampling. Histological analysis revealed squamous cell carcinoma with EBV infection with lymph node metastases. Tumor cells were positive for EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER) by in situ hybridization. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on day 11 after the operation. CapeOX was started as adjuvant chemotherapy, and the patient remains alive without recurrence 7 months after surgery. Conclusion This is the first case report of EBV infection-associated primary SCC of the stomach diagnosed by in situ hybridization of EBER. EBV infection may be related to the pathogenesis of primary SCC. Further evidence and studies are required to establish optimal strategy for this rare disease.

Abstract
Background Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma is an extremely rare malignancy with few case reports reported so far in the current medical literature. Its incidence varies between 0.04 and 0.07% of all gastric malignancies with a male predominance in the sixth decade of life. It has been found that this type of malignancy has a more aggressive behavior and associated poorer prognosis, when compared to gastric adenocarcinoma. Thus, the most appropriate management of this kind of neoplasia is still debatable due to the small number of reported cases. Case presentation We report the case of a 66-year-old man who underwent total gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy for an ulcerative lesion in the fundus of the stomach that turned out to be primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusions Upon confirmation of this specific malignancy, the affected patients should be enrolled in strict follow-up protocols after curative surgery, since the risk for metastasis is high. Physicians should maintain high clinical suspicion in order to diagnose these tumors at an early stage, along with the need to rule out any other possible primary sites of squamous malignancy.

Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach is a rare entity. There are several theories regarding the development of this tumor, but its pathogenesis remains obscure. Fewer than 100 cases of primary SCC of the stomach have been published in the literature. Due to advanced stage at the time of diagnosis in most of these cases, the prognosis is generally poor. In the case presented here, endoscopy revealed a vegetative tumor in the stomach described as SCC by biopsy. Following curative surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy was administered; however, the patient died 3 years and 4 months after surgery after recurrence was diagnosed.

Abstract
Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an exceedingly rare disease. We increased the understanding of gastric SCC and evaluated prognostic factors of gastric SCC.In this large-population cohort study, we retrospectively collected 163 primary gastric SCC and 66,209 primary gastric adenocarcinoma cases from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results program (SEER) database from 1988 to 2012. The Chi-squared test demonstrated the distributed differences. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the prognostic factors.Gastric SCC accounted for 0.2% of all the primary gastric cancer cases. The mean age of patients with gastric SCC was 69.6 years old, and the man-to-woman ratio was 2.3:1. The proportion of black was higher in gastric SCC than gastric adenocarcinoma (P < 0.001). Almost half of the gastric SCCs were diagnosed in stage IV and more than half were poorly differentiated. In gastric SCC, the median survival was 8.0 months and the 5-year overall survival (OS) was 32.7%; in gastric adenocarcinoma the median survival rate was 19.0 months and the 5-year OS was 35.4%. The multivariate analysis showed that number of primary lesions, tumor location, grade, and stage were independent prognostic factors in gastric SCC. The tumor stage was the most important prognostic factor.Primary gastric SCC is exceedingly rare. Compared with gastric adenocarcinoma, gastric SCC was more frequent in black patients and was usually diagnosed when it was poorly differentiated and at a later stage. On the whole, gastric SCC has a poorer outcome. Disease stage is likely a key determinant in survival.

Abstract
Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach is a very rare disease. However, the pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, and prognosis of gastric SCC are controversial and remain to be elucidated. Herein, we report a case of primary gastric SCC of the remnant stomach after subtotal gastrectomy. A 65-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to epigastric discomfort and dizziness. He had undergone subtotal gastrectomy 40 years previously for gastric ulcer perforation. Endoscopy revealed a normal esophagus and a large mass in the remnant stomach. Abdominal computed tomography revealed enhanced wall thickening of the anastomotic site and suspected metachronous gastric cancer. Endoscopic biopsy revealed SCC. Total gastrectomy was performed with Roux-en-Y esophagojejunostomy. A 10-cm tumor was located at the remnant stomach just proximal to the previous area of anastomosis. Pathologic examination showed well-differentiated SCC extended into the subserosa without lymph node involvement (T3N0M0). The patient received adjuvant systemic chemotherapy with 6 cycles of 5-FU and cisplatin regimen, and he is still alive at the 54-month follow-up. According to the treatment principles of gastric cancer, early detection and radical surgical resection can improve the prognosis.

Abstract
We performed a retrospective analysis of 21 patients with primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma (PGSCC) who were admitted to our hospital from October 2008 to October 2014. The median age was 67 years and male predominance was observed, the most common tumor locations were the upper third of the stomach, most of the clinical manifestations were identical to those of other types of gastric tumors, and the tumor cells had positive immunoreactivity for p63 and CK5/6. In terms of treatments, surgery (R0 resection) is the main treatment; the effect of other treatments is unclear. The median survival time for the surgery group and nonsurgery group was 46 and 4.5 months, respectively. Probably due to limited number of cases, no significant difference in median survival time was observed between the surgery alone group and the surgery plus adjuvant therapy group (46 versus 51 months, P = 0.310). A standard chemotherapy regimen for this disease has not yet been established; the choice of its chemotherapy regimens tends to follow the principle of the treatment of gastric adenocarcinoma or esophageal cancer. PGSCC generally had a poor prognosis, and early detection, early diagnosis, and early surgical treatment are beneficial to patients.

Abstract
We report a case of a 70-year-old man, with a status after aortic valve replacement, who presented with melena and hypotension. On physical examination, he was hypotensive, but he responded to resuscitation. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a submucosal mass in the gastric fundus. Imaging of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis showed no evidence of local or distant metastasis. He underwent a partial diaphragmatic resection, gastrectomy, lymphadenectomy, and Roux-en-Y esophagojejunostomy. Pathology showed a gastric squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) invading the diaphragm, with negative margins of resection, and one positive perigastric lymph node. He received chemoradiation, but the patient expired 27 months after surgery.

Abstract
Pure squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach is rare and resembles SCC arising elsewhere in the body. The pathogenesis of SCC remains unclear and controversial. At present, <100 cases of primary SCC of the stomach have been reported. The current study presents a case of SCC of the stomach in a 61-year-old male. Total gastrectomy was performed and a 7.0×6.7×4.5-cm tumor with a superiorly located ulcer was identified in the cardia. Upon histological examination, a moderately-differentiated SCC was observed. Tumor cells extended to the serosa, and the perigastric regional lymph node was also involved. No evidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) or Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was identified using a DNA microarray and in situ hybridization, respectively. A post-operative computed tomography scan four months after the gastrectomy revealed tumor recurrence and dissemination of the tumor to the jejunum and pancreas. The patient succumbed to the disease six months later despite the administration of low-dose adjuvant 5-fluorouracil/cisplatin chemotherapy.

Abstract
Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) may originate elsewhere in the body, including the head, neck, lung, bronchus, cervix uteri, esophagus and cardia, and metastasize to the stomach. In the present report, a case is presented of an SCC, which arose from an unknown primary site and metastasized to the stomach of a 59-year-old male. The tumor was located in the interspace between the liver and the stomach. It involved the placenta percreta, lamina muscularis and submucosa, however, had already metastasized to a regional lymph node at the time of surgery. No SCC was observed in other organs on physical examination, which included positron emission tomography-computed tomography. In the follow-up period, there was no evidence of additional malignant tumors in the patient; therefore, the origin of the tumor was speculative. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report regarding a tumor of this type.

Abstract
We report an extremely rare case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 2-month history of dysphagia and tarry stools. Endoscopic examination revealed a cauliflower-shaped protruding mass along the lesser curvature of the gastric cardia. Biopsy of the lesion revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Computed tomography revealed a thickened stomach wall and a mass protruding into the gastric lumen. Total gastrectomy with splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, and Roux-en-Y reconstruction was performed, together with a lower thoracic esophagectomy via a left thoracotomy. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Postoperative follow-up was uneventful for the first 18 months. However, multiple liver metastases and para-aortic lymph node metastasis developed subsequently. Despite systemic combination chemotherapy, the patient died because of progression of the recurrent tumors. Here, we review the characteristics of 56 cases of gastric squamous cell carcinoma reported in Japan.
