Exploring Nursing Strategies to Engage Community in Cardiovascular Care

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This review aims to highlight some of the strategies nurses use to engage community members in cardiovascular care. We also elaborate on opportunities for improving community engagement.

RECENT FINDINGS

Community engagement occurs across a continuum of progressive levels of community involvement, impact, trust, and flow of communication. Successful community engagement has been shown to improve both patient-centered care and intervention design, implementation, and dissemination. Nurse strategies used for engaging community in cardiovascular care included more examples of outreach, consult, and involvement than collaboration and shared leadership. More attention is needed toward strategies that embrace collaboration and enhance trusting relationships to advance to shared leadership. Nurses must intentionally work in partnership with communities to improve cardiovascular health for all. Furthermore, assessing meaningful community engagement is necessary to achieve the desired outcomes, including optimal cardiovascular health and thriving communities.

State Variation in the Utilization of Nurse Practitioner-Provided Home-Based Primary Care: A Medicare Claims Analysis

Nurse practitioners (NPs) provide an increasing proportion of home-based primary care, despite restrictive scope of practice laws in approximately one half of states. We examined the relationship between scope of practice laws and state volume of NP-provided home-based primary care by performing an analysis of 2018 to 2019 Medicare claims. For each state we calculated the proportion of total home-based primary care visits by NPs and the proportion of all NPs providing home-based primary care. We used the 2018 American Association of Nurse Practitioners classification of state practice environment. We performed chi-square tests to assess the significance between volume and practice environment. We found that 42% of home-based primary care is delivered by NPs nationally, but substantial variation exists across states. We did not find a discernible or statistically significant pattern of uptake of NP-provided home-based primary care across full, reduced, or restricted states. Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Nursing Workforce: A Focus on Maternity Care

Racial and ethnic inequities in health are a national crisis requiring engagement across a range of factors, including the health care workforce. Racial inequities in maternal and infant health are an increasing focus of attention in the wake of rising rates of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Efforts to achieve racial equity in childbirth should include attention to the nurses who provide care before and during pregnancy, at childbirth, and postpartum.

Integrating Home Care: An Innovative Approach for Simulation Learning

BACKGROUND

The nature of a nurse's job is changing dramatically. Nurses are assuming expanded roles for a broad range of patients in community-based care. Nurse educators have a responsibility to teach nursing students about the needs of patients and families in the home care setting.

METHOD

To describe how the creation of a home care video series and a medication reconciliation simulation scenario were used as a teaching strategy in a simulation center.

RESULTS

The teaching strategy supported senior-level nursing students' understanding of the complexity of home care nursing and the nurse's role and responsibilities in care coordination, care transitions, and interprofessional practice.

CONCLUSION

The home care video scenario was received favorably by nursing students. Additional simulation video scenarios are needed that address the health disparities among underrepresented and vulnerable groups. There is potential to offer the simulation in a virtual-online format during the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing mandates. [J Nurs Educ. 2021;60(3):172-176.].

Concept analysis of nursing activism

Nursing history is firmly rooted in social and political activism; however, both the word activism and its defined actions have been minimized in modern nursing practice. This paper seeks to define activism, its uses, and importance to the nursing discipline. A concept analysis using the Walker and Avant (2019) method was conducted. Literature sources were identified through a search of PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO along with hand searches of reference lists. Nursing activism is a concept that extends from within the discipline's ethical responsibilities and social contract with humanity. Activism differs from advocacy or engagement as it requires the expenditure of energy including personal, social, and/or political capital. Nursing activism is a necessary response to health inequities, social accountability, and advancement of the nursing profession.
