Using a Low-Fidelity Simulation to Enhance Cultural Awareness and Emotional Intelligence in Nursing Students

Nursing Students' Perception of Caring for Culturally Diverse Patients: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study

BACKGROUND

This study examined the phenomenon of prelicensure nursing students caring for culturally diverse patients.

METHOD

Individual interviews were conducted with undergraduate nursing students using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Qualitative research experts conducted the interviews, transcribed the data, and followed van Manen's methodology for analysis.

RESULTS

Eleven nursing students participated in the study. Data were collected from April to August 2022. The average length of the student interviews was 32 minutes. Four themes were identified: (1) communication issues; (2) access to care; (3) nurse background; and (4) trust and respect.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights the importance of caring for culturally diverse patients. Policymakers and health care leaders can use the findings to support legislative proposals for enhancing culturally diverse patient safety and health equity. Based on these findings, nurse educators and preceptors can adapt their clinical teaching approaches accordingly, and nurse managers can benefit from the results when hiring new graduate nurses. The relationship between emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, and student achievement: a systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

Emotional and spiritual intelligence are crucial factors in enhancing individuals' knowledge and academic achievement. This study aims to examine the correlation between spiritual intelligence, emotional intelligence, and student achievement through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SID, and Google Scholar databases from 2007 to December 2022. The effect sizes (EF) included the mean and standard deviation of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, and student achievement and correlation coefficients among spiritual intelligence, emotional intelligence, and student achievement. Random effects models were used to pool the results, and the Q test and I2 index were employed to assess heterogeneity. Correlation coefficients were transformed into standard data (Z) using log transformation.

RESULTS

The overall mean score of educational achievement in university and school students was 15.91 (95% CI: 15.26-16.78). The mean scores of spiritual and emotional intelligence were 138.27 (95% CI: 129.19-147.35) and 128.94 (95% CI: 117.08-140.80), respectively. The correlation coefficients between spiritual intelligence, emotional intelligence, and student achievement were r = 0.36 (95% CI: 0.18-0.51) and r = 0.50 (95% CI: 0.28-0.67), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Emotional and spiritual intelligence are independent predictive factors in educational achievement for university and school students. Therefore, improvements in emotional and spiritual intelligence can promote students' academic achievement.

Using Simulation to Teach Learners in Health Care Behavioral Skills Related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A Scoping Review

SUMMARY STATEMENT

Bias is commonplace in the health care environment and can negatively impact patients and their health outcomes. Simulation has long been shown to be an effective teaching tool for communication skills in health care, but it has rarely been used to deliver concrete behavioral skills that address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This scoping review examines 23 published articles surrounding the use of simulation in health care education to impart behavioral skills that reduce bias and promote DEI. Included articles described various behavioral skills including communication, history-taking, and system/community-level advocacy. The most commonly used simulation modality to teach these skills included the use of simulated participants (16 articles, 70%). The main DEI topics addressed in the trainings included sexual orientation/gender identity, language, and culture/ethnicity. Based on findings from this review, the authors suggest recommendations for educators who are considering teaching DEI-related skills through simulation.

Recommendations and Guidelines for the Use of Simulation to Address Structural Racism and Implicit Bias

SUMMARY STATEMENT

Simulation-based education is a particularly germane strategy for addressing the difficult topic of racism and implicit bias due to its immersive nature and the paradigm of structured debriefing. Researchers have proposed actionable frameworks for implicit bias education, particularly outlining the need to shift from recognition to transformation, with the goal of changing discriminatory behaviors and policies. As simulation educators tasked with training health care professionals, we have an opportunity to meet this need for transformation. Simulation can shift behaviors, but missteps in design and implementation when used to address implicit bias can also lead to negative outcomes. The focus of this article is to provide recommendations to consider when designing simulation-based education to specifically address racism and implicit bias.
