Nursing students' perceptions of the academic impact of various health issues

First-year undergraduate students: depressed, distressed, and drained? Influence of depressive symptoms on markers of psychological well-being, sleep, and physical activity

Objective: This study examined depressive symptomatology (DS) across the academic year in first-year undergraduate students and the influence of DS on anxiety, stress, body esteem, physical activity, and sleep. Participants: Participants were first-year undergraduate students (N= 164). Methods: Participants completed validated self-report measures each quarter. A repeated measures ANCOVA was conducted to examine changes in DS over time. Students were categorized as reporting subclinical (SCD) or clinical (CD) depressive symptoms. A repeated measures MANCOVA was conducted to examine the effect of time and DS groups on primary outcomes. Results: No significant main effects of time were observed for outcomes. Significant between-subjects effects were observed with CD participants reporting significantly higher anxiety and stress and lower sleep than SCD participants. Conclusions: First-year undergraduates with CD may have increased risk for negative markers of psychological and physical health outcomes. Universities should prioritize the psychological and physical health of their first-year students.

Nursing students' stress and coping strategies during clinical training in KSA

Objective

Nursing students are exposed to several stressors during their studies and training. The aim of this study is to assess the degree of stress experienced by nursing students at Albaha University, KSA and the coping strategies they subsequently employ.

Methods

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted by a simple random sampling technique on 125 nursing students during their clinical practice. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic variables, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Coping Behavior Inventory.

Results

Of the 125 participants, 48% were male and 52% were female. The mean age was 21 ± 1.56 years, and they were mostly single 110 (88%). Approximately 65 (52%) were very satisfied and 41 (32.8%) were satisfied with their clinical practice. The main stressors were noise (20; 16%), moving location (nine; 7.2%), social interaction (seven; 5.6%), and personal illness (seven; 5.6%). The perceived stress provoking factors included taking care of patients (1.56 ± 0.45), assignments and workload (1.60 ± 043), lack of professional knowledge and skills (1.24 ± 0.45), field of practice (1.47 ± 0.49), peers and daily life (1.89 ± 0.67), and teachers and nursing staff at hospitals (1.45 ± 079). The strategies used by students to minimise stress included taking a problem-solving approach (1.84 ± 067), staying optimistic (1.56 ± 076), transference (1.34 ± 1.20), and avoidance (1.23 ± 056).

Conclusion

The nursing students in the study cohort were exposed to moderate stress due to different stressors. In response, they frequently used a problem-solving approach and avoidance. However, a standard protocol by institutions is required to help reduce stress among nursing students.

Mental health problems in college freshmen: Prevalence and academic functioning

BACKGROUND

Mental health problems in college and their associations with academic performance are not well understood. The main aim of this study was to investigate to what extent mental health problems are associated with academic functioning.

METHODS

As part of the World Mental Health Surveys International College Student project, 12-month mental health problems among freshmen (N = 4921) was assessed in an e-survey of students at KU Leuven University in Leuven, Belgium. The associations of mental health problems with academic functioning (expressed in terms of academic year percentage [or AYP] and grade point average [GPA]) were examined across academic departments.

RESULTS

Approximately one in three freshman reports mental health problems in the past year, with internalizing and externalizing problems both associated with reduced academic functioning (2.9-4.7% AYP reduction, corresponding to 0.2-0.3 GPA reduction). The association of externalizing problems with individual-level academic functioning was significantly higher in academic departments with comparatively low average academic functioning.

LIMITATIONS

Limited sample size precluded further investigation of interactions between department-level and student-level variables. No information was available on freshman secondary school academic performance.

CONCLUSIONS

Mental health problems are common in college freshman, and clearly associated with lower academic functioning. Additional research is needed to examine the potentially causal nature of this association, and, if so, whether interventions aimed at treating mental health problems might improve academic performance.

A survey of student nurses' attitudes toward help seeking for stress

BACKGROUND

Globally, stress in student nurses may have serious implications for health, absenteeism, and attrition. Despite this, there is scant research on student nurses' attitudes toward help seeking.

OBJECTIVES

To examine student nurses' attitudes toward stress and help-seeking.

DESIGN METHODS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

A cross-sectional questionnaire survey design was employed to gather data from 219 student nurses at two large U.K. universities. Two-sample chi-square tests and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze categorical associations between responses.

RESULTS

Most had experienced stress before, believed the incidence within the profession was high, and would disclose their own stress to family/friends rather than to colleagues or professional institutions. The most popular outpatient treatment choice was social support; few would choose formal advice. The most common factor influencing inpatient treatment choice was confidentiality; for many, this factor would also lead them to seek distant rather than local inpatient care. Encouragingly, most would not lose confidence in a stressed colleague.

CONCLUSIONS

Negative attitudes toward stress and help seeking may be entrenched even before training and may have a marked influence on how/whether students seek help. Nurse employers and educators should foster more supportive and accepting attitudes toward stress in order to tackle its unwanted consequences.

Stress and coping styles in Japanese nursing students

The objective of this investigation was to examine the stress and coping styles in Japanese nursing students. The principal measures of the stress and coping styles were the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)-12 and Brief Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced scale. In a cross-sectional analysis, 1324 students completed the anonymous self-administered questionnaires including the scales earlier. Feeling stress, living with family, not eating breakfast every day, having no regular exercise and poor sleep were associated with GHQ responder (psychological distressed group). The most commonly reported source of stress was taking examinations, followed by relationships with friends, engaging in clinical practice and presenting reports. The three most common coping styles adopted by the nursing students were acceptance, self-distraction and using instrumental support. By logistic regression analysis of coping styles with GHQ responder, self-blame, active coping, acceptance and behavioural disengagement were highly associated with GHQ responder. The nursing school educators as well as students should be aware of stress management strategies (e.g. using active coping and avoiding self-blame) that may help prevent depression.

Mental health of muslim nursing students in Thailand

The purpose of this research was to explore the mental health and well-being of Muslim nursing students in Thailand. Specifically, the study investigated the factors that impact anxiety and depression among Muslim nursing students. This cross-sectional research was conducted with a half sampling method of Muslim undergraduate students who were studying at a public nursing college in Thailand. From the 220 self-identified Muslim nursing students, 110 were sampled for this study, representing 14% of the total nursing students at this college. Results indicated a moderate prevalence of anxiety and high prevalence of depression among Muslim nursing students. Stress (β = .42) was positively associated with anxiety, while self-esteem (β = -.42) was negatively associated with anxiety; together this model accounted for 46% of the variance in anxiety. Self-esteem (β = -.41) and social support (β = -.17) were negatively associated with depression, while stress (β = .37) was positively correlated with depression; together this model accounted for 57% of the variance in depression. Recommendations were given to help train Muslim nursing students to be competent nurses with good mental health and well-being who will succeed and contribute to the nursing profession.

Psychological well-being of Thai nursing students

BACKGROUND

The psychological well-being of nursing students is a very important component in the training and development of future nurses. While previous studies have explored different aspects of nursing students' mental and psychological health in various countries, they have given little attention to comparing nursing students with their non-nursing student peers. The present study investigated the differences between nursing students and non-nursing students in Thailand with regard to their psychological well-being. The gender effect was also examined.

METHOD

Four hundred students were included in this study (200 nursing students and 200 non-nursing students). Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and four psychological instruments that examined their self-esteem, life satisfaction, depression, and social difficulties.

RESULTS

Overall, compared to their non-nursing counterparts, nursing students were found to score significantly higher on self-esteem and life satisfaction and reported lower levels of depression and social difficulties. Gender was also found to have a significant main effect on participants' social difficulties. Several recommendations for improving the mental health and psychological well-being of nursing students are discussed.
