Perceptions of Nurses Regarding Opioid Administration: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Opioids are important drugs used in pain management due to their strong analgesic effects. However, there is limited research on nurses' perceptions of administering opioids.

PURPOSE

This study aims to determine nurses' perceptions of administering opioids.

DESIGN

This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design.

SETTINGS

A university hospital located in the south of Turkey.

METHODS

A self-reporting survey was provided to a convenience sample of 190 nurses. The data were collected with the "Introductory Information Form," and the "Nurses' Perceptions on Opioid Medications Administration Questionnaire." Descriptive statistics were applied for data analysis.

RESULTS

The mean age of the nurses was 33.11 ± 7.82 and 86.3% were female. The majority of the nurses did not receive any training on opioid administration other than their undergraduate education. Among the nursing staff, 90.0% expressed the importance of having trust in the prescribing doctor for their comfort in administering opioids. Of the nurses, 30% were undecided about "Nurses associate opioids with drug abuse." and 78.9% disagreed with the statement "Nurses often associate giving opioids with helping patients to die."

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study provided further insight into nurses' perceptions of administering opioids that potentially contribute to pain management. Nurses had information needs and some prejudices regarding opioid administration. Also, relying on the prescribing doctor was important, and problems with prescribing were an obstacle to pain control.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Determining the knowledge and needs of nurses regarding opioid administration and providing in-service training on this subject would positively affect their approach to opioids.

Nurses' and physicians' perceptions of the impact of eHealth and information systems on the roles of health care professionals: A qualitative descriptive study

The increased use of eHealth and information systems impacts health care work broadly, including cultural and social aspects of work such as the roles of health care professionals. This qualitative descriptive study examined the perceptions of health care professionals in terms of how eHealth and information systems have changed their roles. The data was collected via 15 semi-structured thematic interviews and analysed using content analysis with an inductive approach. The analysis indicated mainly unconscious changes in the roles of professional groups. The professionals perceived that the role of digitally competent professionals in the working community was important. Moreover, high digital competency was seen to have led to an increase or change in work tasks. Professionals' own working environments and job opportunities were seen to have affected to their roles when using information systems. eHealth was perceived to have created inequalities in work tasks, increased skills gaps and complicated work. However, eHealth made cooperation between professionals easier than before. Organisations should pay more attention to equal opportunities to increase professional's digital competency, even out workloads between professionals, and provide equal access to eHealth and information systems.

Abusive Supervision and Its Relationship With Nursing Workforce and Patient Safety Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Despite efforts to improve management and leadership behaviors among nurse managers, studies have shown the pervasive nature of abusive supervision in nursing practice, with strong evidence linking this type of behavior to reduced work productivity among nurses. This systematic review aimed to appraise and synthesize peer-reviewed studies that examine nurse-related and patient safety outcomes associated with abusive supervision. The review searched nursing literature from five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO) between August and November 2022. A total of 21 relevant studies were identified, with the Abusive Supervision Scale being the most frequently used measurement tool. Through content analysis, the review identified 29 outcomes which were categorized into six groups: (a) affective-based, (b) behavior/performance-based, (c) relationship-based, (d) cognitive-based, (e) health and well-being, and (f) nursing care. In addition, 10 mediators were identified and grouped into three categories: (a) affective-based, (b) motivation-based, and (c) health and well-being. The review findings provide compelling evidence regarding the detrimental effects of abusive supervision in the nursing workforce. Moreover, the review emphasizes the need for further research to explore how such behavior can impact patient safety outcomes. To address abusive supervision, it is crucial to promote positive behaviors among nurse managers through human resource mechanisms, relevant rules and policies, and theory-driven leadership development programs.

The Impact of Working Environment on Nurses' Caring Behavior in Sabah, Malaysia

Aims

This study aims to investigate 5 types of work environment influencing nurses' caring behavior, namely (i) participation in hospital affairs, (ii) foundations for quality of care, (iii) manager ability, leadership, and support of nurses, (iv) staffing and resource adequacy, and (v) nurse-physician relations.

Design

This research is a cross-sectional study using the survey method.

Methods

Data were collected from 3,532 nurses working in public hospitals and health clinics within Sabah, Malaysia in 2015. The hypothesized model was evaluated using partial least squares method.

Results

The findings reveal that all forms of work environment have a positive effect on nurses' caring behavior except for staffing and resource adequacy which shows a negative effect on caring behavior.

Conclusion

Overall, this study has added to theoretical contributions in the academic and research fields as well as in practical implications in the field of nursing practice by addressing the influence of work environments on caring behavior.

Implications for Nursing Management

The present research has provided convergent evidence on the role of the working environment in influencing the behavior of nurses working in hospitals and health clinics in Sabah, Malaysia.
