Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore different performances in the magnocellular (MC) and parvocellular (PC) visual pathways in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and to objectively assess impairment in early stage of POAG. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a cross-sectional study. MC and PC visual pathways were assessed using isolated-check visual evoked potential (ic-VEP). Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus examination, optical coherence tomography and visual field were measured. Signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), mediated by ic-VEP were recorded. The Spearman's correlation analysis was used to estimate the relationships between visual functions and structures. Receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curves were used to estimate the accuracy in detection of early POAG. RESULTS 60 participants (30 early POAG eyes and 30 age-matched control subjects) were recruited. MC visual pathway showed a non-linear response function, while PC visual pathway was a linear response function as contrast increased. Early POAG eyes exhibited significantly weaker initial contrast gains and lower maximum responses in the MC visual pathway (p=0.001, p=0.004, respectively). The SNRs at 8% and 32% depths of modulation (DOM) were significantly correlated with temporal-side retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in early POAG in MC-biased stimulation (p=0.017, p=0.020, respectively). The areas under ROC of 16% DOM were 0.780 (sensitivity 80.0%, specificity 63.3%) with the cut-off SNR of 2.07. CONCLUSIONS The MC visual pathway was damaged in the early stage of POAG. The SNRs at 8% and 32% DOM of MC-biased stimulation were significantly correlated with temporal-side RNFL thickness in early POAG, which helped in understanding the mechanisms of visual impairment in the early stage of POAG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate neurophysiological dynamics during a visuocognitive task in glaucoma patients vs. healthy controls. METHODS Fifteen patients with early-stage primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and fifteen age-matched healthy participants underwent a "go/no-go" task, monitored with EEG. Participants had to semantically categorize visual objects in central vision, with animal or furniture as targets according to the experimental block. RESULTS Early visual processing was delayed by 50 ms in patients with POAG compared to controls. The patients displayed a smaller difference between animal and furniture categorization during higher-level cognitive processing (at 400-600 ms). Regarding behavioral data, the groups differed in accuracy performance and decision criterion. As opposed to the control group, patients did not display facilitation and a higher accuracy rate for animal stimuli. However, patients maintained a consistent decision criterion throughout the experiment, whereas controls displayed a shift towards worse decision criteria in furniture trials, with higher error rate. CONCLUSIONS The comparative analysis of behavioral and neurophysiological data revealed in POAG patients a delay in early visual processing, and potential high-level cognitive compensation during late, task-dependent activations. SIGNIFICANCE To our knowledge, our findings provide the first evidence of modification in cognitive brain dynamics associated with POAG.

Is there magnocellular facilitation of early neural processes underlying visual word recognition? Evidence from masked repetition priming with ERPs. Neuropsychologia 2022; 170:108230. Abstract
An influential theory in the field of visual object recognition proposes that it is the fast magnocellular (M) system that facilitates neural processing of spatially more fine-grained information rather the slower parvocellular (P) system. While written words can be considered as a special type of visual objects, it is unknown whether magnocellular facilitation also plays a role in reading. We used a masked priming paradigm that has been shown to result in neural facilitation in visual word processing and tested whether these facilitating effects are mediated by the magnocellular system. In two experiments, we manipulated the influence of magnocellular and parvocellular systems on visual processing of a contextually predictable target character by contrasting high versus low spatial frequency and luminance versus color contrast, respectively. In addition, unchanged (normal) primes were included in both experiments as a manipulation check. As expected, unchanged primes elicited typical repetition effects in the N1, N250 and P3 components of the ERP in both experiments. In the experiment manipulating spatial contrast, we obtained repetition effects only for the N1 component for both M- and P-biased primes. In the luminance versus color contrast experiment, repetition effects were found in N1 and N250 for both M- and P- biased primes. Furthermore, no interactions were found between M-vs. P-biased prime types and repetition. Together these results indicate that M- and P- information contributes jointly to early neural processes underlying visual word recognition.

Abstract
PURPOSE As well as obtaining confirmation of the magnocellular system involvement in developmental dyslexia (DD); the aim was primarily to search for a possible involvement of the parvocellular system; and, furthermore, to complete the assessment of the visual chromatic axis by also analysing the koniocellular system. METHODS Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to achromatic stimuli with low luminance contrast and low spatial frequency, and isoluminant red/green and blue/yellow stimuli with high spatial frequency were recorded in 10 dyslexic children and 10 age- and sex-matched, healthy subjects. RESULTS Dyslexic children showed delayed VEPs to both achromatic stimuli (magnocellular-dorsal stream) and isoluminant red/green and blue/yellow stimuli (parvocellular-ventral and koniocellular streams). To our knowledge, this is the first time that a dysfunction of colour vision has been brought to light in an objective way (i.e., by means of electrophysiological methods) in children with DD. CONCLUSION These results give rise to speculation concerning the need for a putative approach for promoting both learning how to read and/or improving existing reading skills of children with or at risk of DD. The working hypothesis would be to combine two integrated interventions in a single programme aimed at fostering the function of both the magnocellular and the parvocellular streams.

Abstract
Background: Some diseases that affect the visual system may show loss of chromatic-achromatic sensitivity before obvious physical signs appear in the usual examination of the eye's posterior segment. A perimetric study has been conducted with four typical patients with glaucoma and diabetes, at different stages of the disease. Materials and Methods: In addition to the standard white-on-white (standard automated perimetry [SAP]), a test battery has been used to study patient's contrast sensitivity, using stimuli with different chromatic, spatial, and temporal content (multichannel perimetry). The choice of stimuli tries to maximize the response of different visual mechanisms: Achromatic (parvocellular and magnocellular origin); chromatic red-green (parvocellular origin); and chromatic blue-yellow (koniocellular origin). Results: The results seem to indicate losses in the achromatic-parvocellular perimetry and both chromatic perimetry tests, undetected by conventional SAP. Conclusions: Our results illustrate that our patients without visible retinal alterations show signs of suspicion in multichannel perimetry.

Visual evoked potential and psychophysical contrast thresholds in glaucoma. Doc Ophthalmol 2014; 128:111-20. Abstract
PURPOSE We compared the diagnostic power of electrophysiologically and psychophysically measured contrast thresholds for the diagnosis of glaucoma. Additionally, we investigated whether combining results from the two methods improved diagnostic power. METHODS Seven-eight subjects between 40 and 88 years formed the main study group: 21 normal controls (9 males) and 57 glaucoma patients (30 males) were tested. Twenty-two younger control subjects were also tested. Contrast thresholds were determined for a 1 cpd sinusoidal grating, subtending 41° × 52° modulated at 14.3 rps. The thresholds were based on the same staircase method applied to visual evoked potential (VEP) and psychophysical responses (Psyc). Diagnostic power was assessed by the percent area under the curve (%AUC) of receiver operating characteristic plots. RESULTS Psyc showed significant age dependence, -0.10 ± 0.02 dB, while VEPs did not. Diagnostic performance for moderate and severe eyes combined was modest: Psyc 74 ± 9.0 % and VEP 72 ± 9.1 %, but improved significantly (p < 0.05) for a simple combined method, up to 90 ± 6.0 % for moderate disease. The combined method improved %AUC for all severities on average (p < 0.03). Canonical correlation analysis indicated that the four threshold measures contained independent information and that these independent dimensions were each correlated with glaucoma severity (p < 0.0015). CONCLUSION Combining the VEP and Psyc thresholds appeared to improve diagnostic power. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that they measured statistically independent aspects of glaucoma possibly related to disease severity. Adding the 20-s psychophysical test to a VEP test produced a significant benefit for a small time cost.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare psychophysical and electrophysiological testings in early optic nerve dysfunction in a group of clinically asymptomatic subjects with suspect ocular hypertension (OHT). METHODS Forty eyes of 40 patients with suspect OHT and asymmetrical horizontal cup/disc ratio (0.2/0.4), 22 eyes of 22 patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG), and 40 eyes of 40 healthy controls were evaluated by using frequency-doubling technology perimetry (FDT), contrast sensitivity (CS), pattern electroretinography (PERG), and pattern visual-evoked potentials (VEP). The VEP were elicited by checkerboard stimuli with large (VEP 120), medium (VEP 45), and small (VEP 15) checks; then the values of the amplitude (A) and latency (L) of P100 peaks were studied. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and optimal cutoff points of abnormal values. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine which tests were providing the most useful information. In addition, Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to test the differences between the control group and the OHT group. RESULTS VEP P100 peak latency (VEP L15 and VEP L45) and amplitude (VEP A120), PERG N95 peak amplitude, CS at medium spatial frequencies (CS 4SF), and FDT pattern standard deviation (PSD) yielded the greatest sensitivity (85.0 to 60.0%) and specificity (80.0 to 60.0%) ratio, displaying the largest ROC curve areas; whereas PERG N95 peak latency ROC curve had the smallest areas. Kruskal-Wallis test showed that most diagnostic tests were able to differentiate the OHT group from the control group. Stepwise logistic regression analysis identified VEP L15 (p < 0.001), CS 4SF (p = 0.023), FDT PSD (p = 0.032), and VEP A120 (p = 0.072) as tests that could be useful to distinguish controls from OHT. CONCLUSIONS Our data confirm that psychophysical and electrophysiological tests are useful for early detection of patients at risk of developing OAG.

Abstract
Learning disabilities constitute a diverse group of disorders in which children who generally possess at least average intelligence have problems processing information or generating output. Their etiologies are multifactorial and reflect genetic influences and dysfunction of brain systems. Reading disability, or dyslexia, is the most common learning disability. It is a receptive language-based learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent word recognition, rapid automatic naming, and/or reading-comprehension skills. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonologic component of language that makes it difficult to use the alphabetic code to decode the written word. Early recognition and referral to qualified professionals for evidence-based evaluations and treatments are necessary to achieve the best possible outcome. Because dyslexia is a language-based disorder, treatment should be directed at this etiology. Remedial programs should include specific instruction in decoding, fluency training, vocabulary, and comprehension. Most programs include daily intensive individualized instruction that explicitly teaches phonemic awareness and the application of phonics. Vision problems can interfere with the process of reading, but children with dyslexia or related learning disabilities have the same visual function and ocular health as children without such conditions. Currently, there is inadequate scientific evidence to support the view that subtle eye or visual problems cause or increase the severity of learning disabilities. Because they are difficult for the public to understand and for educators to treat, learning disabilities have spawned a wide variety of scientifically unsupported vision-based diagnostic and treatment procedures. Scientific evidence does not support the claims that visual training, muscle exercises, ocular pursuit-and-tracking exercises, behavioral/perceptual vision therapy, "training" glasses, prisms, and colored lenses and filters are effective direct or indirect treatments for learning disabilities. There is no valid evidence that children who participate in vision therapy are more responsive to educational instruction than children who do not participate.

Abstract
PURPOSE Frequency doubling technology (FDT) is a recent psychophysical test for glaucoma. It measures the contrast threshold to low spatial frequency, high temporal frequency sinusoidal luminance profile bars. We wanted to confirm, with stricter controls, Vaegan and Hollow's report that contrast thresholds of steady state visual evoked potentials (ssVEPs) to a stimulus resembling the central field of the FDT test was more sensitive to glaucoma than the subjective threshold to the same stimulus and to start to optimize the technique. METHODS A double masked trial using 57 eyes of 42 subjects. Both thresholds were estimated by modified binary search. In psychophysical testing, subjects were given a two alternative forced choice task. In ssVEP testing a significant signal in any one of eight channels was deemed to be a detection. In some subjects electrode positions were compared, both eyes were tested, tests were repeated to estimate reliability, stimulus frequencies were varied or full contrast functions were obtained. RESULTS Thresholds and percent abnormal increased as a function of glaucoma severity for ssVEPs but not for psychophysics. Both threshold measures were reliable. Interocular correlations were low. SsVEP amplitude against contrast functions had similar thresholds to those found by modified binary search. The data was too irregular for individual thresholds to be estimated from a fitted exponential. Amplitudes were greatest at 7 to 10 Hz, < or =6 cm above inion and least laterally. Noise was similar across electrodes. CONCLUSIONS SsVEP contrast thresholds to a stimulus like the central field of the FDT test detected glaucoma better than corresponding psychophysical thresholds at 18.29 Hz, when formal controls were used, as they had in a less controlled previous study at 7.14 Hz.
