Abstract
INTRODUCTION Promoting safe sleep to decrease sudden unexpected infant death is challenging in the hospital setting. LOCAL PROBLEM Concern for adherence to safe sleep practice across inpatient units at a large pediatric hospital. METHODS Used quality improvement methodologies to promote safe sleep across all units. INTERVENTIONS Development of a multidisciplinary expert group, hospital-wide guidelines, targeted interventions, and bedside audits to track progress. RESULTS Adherence to safe sleep practices improved from 9% to 53%. Objects in the crib were a major barrier to maintaining a safe sleep environment. Safe sleep practices were less likely to be observed in infants with increased medical complexity (p = .027). CONCLUSIONS Quality improvement methodology improved adherence to infant safe sleep guidelines across multiple units. Medically complex infants continue to be a challenge to safe sleep. Therefore, ongoing education for staff and further research into best practices for the most complex infant populations are necessary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To increase compliance with standardized safe sleep recommendations for patients in a cohort of regional level III/IV neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in accordance with recently revised guidelines issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). STUDY DESIGN A regional quality improvement (QI) initiative led by a multidisciplinary task force standardized safe sleep criteria across participating NICU sites. Universal and unit-specific interventions were implemented via Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles with evaluation of compliance through routine crib audits, run chart completion, and Pareto chart analysis. RESULTS Following QI implementation, compliance with safe sleep guidelines for eligible NICU infants improved from 34% to 90% from October 2019 through September 2022. CONCLUSION Compliance with early, consistent modeling of safe sleep practices nearly tripled in this cohort of regional NICUs. A standardized, timely approach to safe sleep transition demonstrated dramatic and sustained improvement in the practice and modeling of safe sleep behaviors in the NICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) is the leading cause of death in infants 1 month to 1 year of age in the United States. Despite extensive efforts in research and public education, rates of sleep-related infant death have plateaued since the late-1990s, largely due to unsafe sleep practices and environments. LOCAL PROBLEM A multidisciplinary team assessed our institution's compliance with its own infant safe sleep policy. Data was collected on infant sleep practices, nurses' knowledge and training on the hospital policy, and teaching practices for parents and caregivers of hospitalized infants. Zero crib environments from our baseline observation met all the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for infant safe sleep. METHODS A comprehensive safe sleep program was implemented in a large pediatric hospital system. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve compliance with safe sleep practice from 0% to 80%, documentation of infant sleep position and environment every shift from 0% to 90%, and documentation of caregiver education from 12% to 90% within 24 months. INTERVENTIONS Interventions included revision of hospital policy, staff education, family education, environmental modifications, creation of a safe sleep taskforce, and electronic health record modifications. RESULTS Documented compliance with infant safe sleep interventions at the bedside improved from 0% to 88%, while documentation of family safe sleep education improved from 12% to 97% during the study period. CONCLUSIONS A multifaceted, multidisciplinary approach can lead to significant improvements in infant safe sleep practices and education in a large tertiary care children's hospital system.

Abstract
PROBLEM Safe sleep programs have been existing since the concept was first defined in 1969. The need for health care providers to model safe sleep practices is essential for successful adherence; however, barriers to promoting safe sleep practices hinder healthcare providers' ability to implement safe sleep in hospital settings. AIM To determine the barriers to promoting safe sleep practices amongst healthcare workers in the hospital setting. METHODS Whittemore & Knafl's framework (2005) guided this integrative review. CINAHL, PubMed, and Academic Search Complete databases were used as a search strategy. Inclusion criteria was limited to studies between 2010 and 2021, were peer-reviewed, in English, and quality improvement projects consisting of barriers to implementing safe sleep practices within hospitals. To assess quality of the included studies, the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence were used. The studies were analyzed by two of the authors with data further categorized using the Social Ecological Model (SEM) to develop themes. RESULTS Findings of the 10 included studies were presented in the form of a data display matrix. The authors used the SEM to categorize the findings under three main categories at the organizational, individual, and cultural levels. CONCLUSIONS Barriers need to be addressed in hospital settings to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Therefore, it is vital to consider those barriers while providing teaching programs in hospital settings. IMPLICATIONS Findings from this review provide the core elements to consider for the development of safe sleep programs in the hospital setting.

Abstract
Sleep-related deaths are a leading cause of infant mortality in Florida. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing infants to sleep on their back, alone, and without soft bedding. Compliance with these guidelines varies among parents. This evaluation examined the rates of safe infant sleep practices and associated factors among 1985 participants enrolled in Florida Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (FL MIECHV) programs during 2017-2019. Participant- and program-level variables were examined in relation to three sleep practices: infant position, bedding, and bed-sharing at 2-3 months to determine which factors were associated with high rates of safe sleep outcomes. Analyses included univariate descriptive statistics, bivariate statistics, and multivariable logistic regression. Most caregivers (70%) reported always placing their babies to sleep on their back, alone, and without soft bedding. Factors such as primary language, race, education, housing situation, and year the Safe Baby™ curriculum implemented were significantly associated with safe infant sleep practices. Bearing this in mind, FL MIECHV can tailor safe sleep education, messaging, and strategies to support participants at highest risk. Recent adoption of the Safe Baby™ curriculum, and associated staff training, was an important factor influencing parents' infant sleep practices.

Abstract
Background This scoping review focuses on infant sleep-related factors and themes that are relevant when health practitioners provide preventive health services to expectant and new parents. Methods A systematic literature search in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO, published in 2010 or later, identified 1661 records. The search was further narrowed to focus on sleep in healthy term-born infants until the second half of the first year of life. A blinded review by both authors covered 136 papers, of which 43 papers were reviewed in the full text. Finally, 38 articles were included in the data extraction. Results The analysis process showed that the selected studies formed three main information categories: 11 studies thematised safe infant sleep issues, 10 studies described design and findings from sleep-related intervention studies, and 17 studies focused on different parent-child interactive aspects that may influence the quality and duration of infant sleep in the first six months of life. The main finding is that knowledge about early infant sleep is very complex, and includes both child, parent, and environmental factors. Several studies have shown that the concepts and factors related to safe infant sleep also influence the development of healthy infant sleep patterns. Thus, these aspects are interwoven with each other and should be addressed together in communication with parents. Conclusions Health practitioners with different professional backgrounds need to search for an agreement on when and how different aspects of sleep-related knowledge should be communicated to new and expectant parents to enable the design of national follow-up programs. Parents want coherent and personalized services regarding infant sleep issues that may allow them to choose sleeping arrangements, routines, and behaviors that fit in with their sociocultural attitudes and traditions. Many different sources and formats may be used to empower parents regarding infant sleep issues. Studies have described the use of group or individual meetings, videos, and written materials. The key issue is the importance of consistent and seamless knowledge-based services.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of WeChat-based remote follow-up management on reducing the home care burden and anxiety of parents of premature infants. METHODS A randomized controlled study was conducted in our hospital, with 150 premature infants enrolled in this study, each with 75 cases in the intervention group and the control group. WeChat-based remote follow-up management was performed in the intervention group after discharge, while traditional outpatient follow-up management was performed in the control group. Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) scale as the primary outcome was used to compare the parental care burden between the two groups. RESULTS At the 1-month follow-up, the ZBI (37.1 ± 8.3 vs. 54.2 ± 10.5 [mean ± SD], mean difference: 17.1, the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference: [14.07, 20.13], P = 0.016), Family Caregiver Task Inventory (FCTI) scale (23.1 ± 5.2 vs. 33.4 ± 6.7 [mean ± SD], mean difference: 10.3, the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference: [8.38, 12.22], P = 0.023), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) (49.6 ± 8.5 vs. 60.2 ± 10.8 [mean ± SD], mean difference: 10.6, the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference: [7.49,13.71], P = 0.021) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) (48.2 ± 9.5 vs. 58.8 ± 11.2 [mean ± SD], mean difference: 10.6, the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference: [7.28, 13.92], P = 0.019) scores of the intervention group were lower than those of the control group, and the lower scores indicate better outcomes. CONCLUSION WeChat-based remote follow-up management of premature infants after discharge can effectively improve parents' ability to care and their psychological state and reduce burden of care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite the 2016 American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for preventing sudden unexpected infant death, there are approximately 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths annually in the United States. Modeling of safe sleep practices by nurses in the hospital influences parents' practice at home; however, safe sleep practices are not consistently modeled during the childbirth hospitalization. METHODS A quality improvement project was conducted to implement a safe sleep initiative based on the 2016 American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for nurses caring for hospitalized infants after birth. Evaluation included testing of nurses' knowledge, infant crib audits, and nurses' evaluation of the intervention. RESULTS A significant improvement was found in overall nurse education scores. Crib audits demonstrated a significant improvement in the following elements: use of multiple blankets, swaddling of the infant, and parent teaching. Nursing surveys reported an increase in confidence to practice safe sleep recommendations and educate and redirect parents. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Implementing a safe sleep initiative can increase nurses' knowledge, improve adherence to recommendations with modeling safe sleep practices, and increase parent awareness of safe sleep recommendations, potentially positively affecting adherence after discharge.

Abstract
PURPOSE Following an assessment of safe sleep practices (SSP) and nurses' safe sleep knowledge in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an evidence-based 2-part safe sleep program including nurse education and the use of safe sleep cards was developed in an attempt to increase SSP. DESIGN A quality improvement project with time-series methodology, including observational and survey data collection. SAMPLE To assess SSP, sleep environment audits were completed pre- (N = 48) and post- safe sleep program (N = 44). To assess nurses' safe sleep knowledge, a safe sleep questionnaire was distributed pre-education (N = 48) and post-education (N = 23). MAIN OUTCOME VARIABLE The change in SSP (ΔSSP) following safe sleep program implementation and change in nurses' safe sleep knowledge (ΔKnowledge) following education. RESULTS SSP increased from 25 percent to 61 percent compliance, and nurses' knowledge scores increased from 83 percent to 97 percent.

Abstract
Of the nearly 3.8 million infants born in the United States in 2018, 8.3% had low birth weight (ie, weight <2500 g) and 10% were born preterm (ie, gestational age of <37 weeks). Ten to fifteen percent of infants (approximately 500 000 annually), including low birth weight and preterm infants and others with congenital anomalies, perinatally acquired infections, and other diseases, require admission to a NICU. Every year, approximately 3600 infants in the United States die of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), unknown and undetermined causes, and accidental suffocation and strangulation in an unsafe sleep environment. Preterm and low birth weight infants are 2 to 3 times more likely than healthy term infants to die suddenly and unexpectedly. Thus, it is important that health care professionals prepare families to maintain their infant in a safe home sleep environment as per recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Medical needs of the NICU infant often require practices such as nonsupine positioning, which should be transitioned as soon as medically possible and well before hospital discharge to sleep practices that are safe and appropriate for the home environment. This clinical report outlines the establishment of appropriate NICU protocols for the timely transition of these infants to a safe home sleep environment. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome include premature birth, maternal smoking, prone or side sleeping position, sleeping with blankets, sharing a sleeping surface with an adult, and sleeping without an adult in the room. In this study, we compare parents' responses on sleep patterns in premature and term infants with medical complexity. METHODS Parents of children enrolled in the Canadian Respiratory Syncytial Virus Evaluation Study of Palivizumab were phoned monthly regarding their child's health status until the end of each respiratory syncytial virus season. Baseline data were obtained on patient demographics, medical history, and neonatal course. Responses on adherence to safe sleep recommendations were recorded as part of the assessment. RESULTS A total of 2,526 preterms and 670 term infants with medical complexity were enrolled. Statistically significant differences were found in maternal smoking rates between the two groups: 13.3% (preterm); 9.3% (term) infants (χ 2=8.1, df=1, P=0.004) and with respect to toys in the crib: 12.3% (term) versus 5.8% preterms (χ 2=24.5, df=1, P<0.0005). Preterm infants were also significantly more likely to be placed prone to sleep (8.8%), compared with term infants (3.3%), (χ 2=18.1, df=1, P<0.0005). CONCLUSION All the infants in this study had frequent medical contacts. There is a greater prevalence of some risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome in preterm infants compared to term infants with medical complexity. Specific educational interventions for vulnerable infants may be necessary.

Abstract
Of the nearly 3.8 million infants born in the United States in 2018, 8.3% had low birth weight (<2500 g [5.5 lb]) and 10% were born preterm (gestational age of <37 completed weeks). Many of these infants and others with congenital anomalies, perinatally acquired infections, and other disease require admission to a NICU. In the past decade, admission rates to NICUs have been increasing; it is estimated that between 10% and 15% of infants will spend time in a NICU, representing approximately 500 000 neonates annually. Approximately 3600 infants die annually in the United States from sleep-related deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (R95), ill-defined deaths (R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (W75). Preterm and low birth weight infants are particularly vulnerable, with an incidence of death 2 to 3 times greater than healthy term infants. Thus, it is important for health care professionals to prepare families to maintain their infant in a safe sleep environment, as per the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, infants in the NICU setting commonly require care that is inconsistent with infant sleep safety recommendations. The conflicting needs of the NICU infant with the necessity to provide a safe sleep environment before hospital discharge can create confusion for providers and distress for families. This technical report is intended to assist in the establishment of appropriate NICU protocols to achieve a consistent approach to transitioning NICU infants to a safe sleep environment as soon as medically possible, well before hospital discharge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An unsafe sleep environment remains the leading contributor to unexpected infant death. PURPOSE To determine the effectiveness of a quality improvement initiative developed to create a hospital-based safe sleep environment for all newborns and infants. METHODS A multidisciplinary team from the well-baby nursery (WBN) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a 149-bed academic, quaternary care, regional referral center developed and implemented safe sleep environments within the hospital for all prior to discharge. To monitor compliance, the following were tracked monthly: documentation of parent education, caregiver surveys, and hospital crib check audits. On the inpatient general pediatric units, only hospital crib check audits were tracked. Investigators used Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles to evaluate the impact of the initiative from October 2015 through February 2018. RESULTS Safe sleep education was documented for all randomly checked records (n = 440). A survey (n = 348) revealed that almost all caregivers (95.4%) reported receiving information on safe infant sleep. Initial compliance with all criteria in WBN (n = 281), NICU (n = 285), and general pediatric inpatient units (n = 121) was 0%, 0%, and 8.3%, respectively. At 29 months, WBN and NICU compliance with all criteria was 90% and 100%, respectively. At 7 months, general pediatric inpatient units' compliance with all criteria was 20%. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE WBN, NICU and general pediatric inpatient unit collaboration with content experts led to unit-specific strategies that improved safe sleep practices. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH Future studies on the impact of such an initiative at other hospitals are needed.

Abstract
As part of our special topics issue on inpatient maternity care, experts were asked to offer their thoughts about the main issues putting mothers and babies at risk in the maternity inpatient setting and what quality and safety practices may be beneficial in keeping them safe from harm. Each of the experts has a unique perspective. Loraine O'Neill was one of the original perinatal patient safety nurses who were established as part of an effort by a professional liability company to promote patient safety in birthing hospitals that they covered in several states (). She now is the perinatal patient safety officer in a large academic medical center in New York City. Lisa Miller is a well-known expert on fetal assessment during labor, certified nurse midwife, attorney, educator, patient safety expert, and editor of a popular fetal monitoring textbook (). She has taught fetal monitoring to nurses, midwives, and physicians in multidisciplinary groups all over the United States and consulted on numerous patient safety initiatives. Annie Rohan is a dual-certified neonatal and pediatric nurse practitioner with a 30-plus year clinical practice career with infants, children, and families facing critical and chronic illness. She is currently a healthcare researcher, and oversees advanced practice and doctoral nursing programs at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sudden unexplained infant death (SUID) is a major contributor to infant mortality, and pediatric nurses have the responsibility to educate parents on SUID-reducing strategies. This study was conducted to measure pediatric nurses' knowledge of SUID-related safe sleep practices (K-SSSP) and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (K-ICPR). METHODS In total, 136 pediatric nurses were administered a survey including K-SSSP (13 items), K-ICPR (5 items), confidence in K-SSSP education (1 item; 5 points), and other factors relating to SUID experiences or education. RESULTS The correct answer rates of the K-SSSP and K-ICPR were 62.6% and 62.5%, retrospectively. The mean score for confidence in K-SSSP education was 2.6±0.9. Only 18 nurses (13.2%) responded that they educated parents on the content of the K-SSSP, while 76 nurses had received education on SUID. Positive relationships were observed between K-SSSP scores and higher education, between K-ICPR scores and having own child(ren) and clinical experience, and between confidence in K-SSSP education and higher education or having one's own child(ren). Nurses caring for newborns performed more SUID education than nurses working in other units. CONCLUSION There is a profound need to implement a systemic educational program on SUID and strategies to reduce SUID for pediatric nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the opinions of clinicians about the risks, benefits, barriers, and facilitators to the practice of parent sleep during skin-to-skin care in hospital settings. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. SETTING Online survey. PARTICIPANTS Clinicians who self-identified as infant care providers, that is, neonatal clinicians (N = 158). METHODS We sent an online survey invitation to neonatal clinicians through neonatal websites, conferences, and social media sites in the United States and used snowball recruitment. We used a risk management framework to analyze qualitative data. We used descriptive statistics and the chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to determine if opinions differed based on clinician and organizational characteristics. RESULTS Respondents' support of parent sleep during skin-to-skin care (yes/no) did not differ on the basis of whether the clinician had taken a formal course on skin-to-skin care, facilitated skin-to-skin care more than 100 times, or frequently promoted skin-to-skin care in current practice. Respondents who supported parent sleep (n = 93, 59% of respondents) reported greater implementation of risk control strategies than nonsupporters (n = 53 [57%] vs. n = 3 [5%]; p < .001), such as frequent monitoring of vital signs (n = 33 [35%] vs. n = 2 [3%]; p < .001), use of devices to support skin-to-skin care (n = 49 [53%] vs. n = 19 [29%]; p = .003), and proper positioning (n = 20 [22%] vs. n = 0 [0%]; p < .001). Nonsupporters more frequently reported that parent sleep during skin-to-skin care violates safe sleep recommendations, is habit forming for home, poses a fall risk, and jeopardizes the infant's airway. CONCLUSION Most respondents supported parent sleep during skin-to-skin care, but concerns regarding safety for the infant remained a barrier. The use of a risk management framework may help facilitate a systematic approach to improve the implementation of safe skin-to-skin practices.

Abstract
Background The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends infants should be Alone, on their Back, and in a clear Crib to combat relatively stagnant rates of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). These are referred to as the ABCs of safe sleep. Studies have shown these recommendations are not consistently followed in the hospital setting, but further investigation would determine how to improve the rate of adherence. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an expanded safe sleep initiative at three Georgia free-standing children’s hospital campuses before and after a multipronged safe sleep initiative. Methods A quality improvement program with a pre/post analysis was performed using a convenience method of sampling. Infants < 12 months old in three inpatient pediatric campuses were analyzed pre- and post- interventions. The intervention included: 1) nursing education, 2) identification of nurse “safe sleep” champions, 3) crib cards, 4) crib audits, and 5) weekly reporting of data showing nursing unit ABC compliance via tracking boards. The goal was ABC compliance of ≥25% for the post-intervention period. A standardized crib audit tool evaluated sleep position/location, sleep environment, and ABC compliance (both safe position/location and environment). Chi square analysis, Fisher’s exact test, and logistic regression were used to compare safe sleep behaviors before and after the interventions. Results There were 204 cribs included pre-intervention and 274 cribs post-intervention. Overall, there was not a significant change in sleep position/location (78.4 to 76.6%, p = 0.64). There was a significant increase in the percent of infants sleeping in a safe sleep environment following the intervention (5.9 to 39.8%, p < 0.01). Overall ABC compliance, including both sleep position/location and environment, improved from 4.4% pre-intervention to 32.5% post-intervention (p < 0.01). There was no significant variability between the hospitals (p = 0.71, p = 1.00). Conclusions The AAP’s safe sleep recommendations are currently not upheld in children’s hospitals, but safer sleep was achieved across three children’s campuses in this study. Significant improvements were made in sleep environment and overall safe sleep compliance with this multi-pronged initiative.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prone sleeping position is the main known modifiable risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). There are other SIDS recommendations although with less impact. The objective of this study is to describe the prevalence of prone position during sleep as well as other risk factors associated with SIDS in a sample of Spanish babies and infants. METHODS Cross-sectional study carried out on 640 families with children from 0 months to 11 months. In addition to the sleep position, the adherence to four other recommendations regarding SIDS was analysed: place where infant sleeps, breastfeeding, use of non-nutritive suction, and maternal smoking. RESULTS A total of 41.3% of infants under 6 months and 59.7% of infants aged 6 to 11 months slept in a non-recommended position. Only 6.4% of families analysed followed all five recommendations. DISCUSSION There is a high prevalence of modifiable risk factors for SIDS among the studied population. Personalized education should be promoted, along with other campaigns to raise awareness and prevent SIDS.

Abstract
Breastfeeding benefits both infant and mother, including reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). To further reduce risk of SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends infants sleep on their backs on a separate sleep surface. Our objective was to describe trends and factors associated with breastfeeding and infant sleep practices in Georgia. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System 2004-2013 data were obtained from the Georgia Department of Public Health. Chi square tests for trends were utilized to determine whether there were significant linear trends in breastfeeding and infant sleep overtime and by survey phase. After exclusions, 4643 cases remained for analysis. From 2004 to 2013, there was a slight (insignificant) decrease in breastfeeding initiation, with the highest proportion in 2010 (79.9%) and the lowest in 2013 (66.9%). Rates of exclusive breastfeeding increased significantly from 2004 (31.3%) to 2013 (81.7%). During that time, the proportion of infants being placed back to sleep slightly decreased (though not significantly), from 59.7 to 48.9%. The proportion of mothers who reported never bed-sharing increased significantly from 26.7 to 45.1% over this period. The decreasing breastfeeding initiation rates in Georgia diverge from national upward trends, however, exclusive breastfeeding rates by survey phase were slightly higher than national trends. Our results suggest the need for targeted education and support for breastfeeding and safe sleep practices. State-level trends data on breastfeeding and infant sleep practices provide valuable information for state-level public health professionals and policy makers, health care providers, and breastfeeding and safe sleep advocates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal substance exposure is an increasing concern in infants being cared for in neonatal intensive care units. Current recommendations support nonpharmacologic treatments for this population of infants. Multimodal (motion, sound) seats are often employed to soothe infants. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to survey neonatal intensive care unit nurses on their practices regarding the use of a motion/sound infant seat. METHODS Sixty-six nurses (52% of 126 total nurses) completed the survey about their self-disclosed practices that included (1) reasons for use; (2) rationale for choice of settings of motion and sound; (3) duration of time infants spent in seat in one session; (4) perception of positive infant response; (5) who places infants in the seat; and (6) nursing instructions dispensed prior to use. RESULTS Chief reasons for use were infant state, lack of persons to hold infants, and a diagnosis of neonatal abstinence syndrome. Rationale for choice of motion and sound settings included trial and error, prior settings, personal preferences/patterns, assumptions, and random selection. Nurse responses regarding the amount of time the infant was placed in the seat in a single session ranged from 10 to 360 minutes, with determining factors of infant cues, sleeping, feeding, and someone else to hold the infant. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE As nonpharmacologic treatments evolve, nurses need guidelines for safe, effective interventions to care for infants. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH Further research is necessary to ascertain the responses of withdrawing infants and to establish guidelines and education for use of the motion/sound infant seat.

Abstract
Despite the release of guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on safe infant sleep and public service campaigns aimed at reducing risk factors over the past 25 years, deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) are still the 4th leading causes of infant death in the United States. Findings from several studies demonstrate that nurses do not consistently model safe sleep practices with infants due to a lack of education on evidence-based practice and misconceptions regarding safe infant sleep. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the need for expanded education to both nurses and parents on the principles of safe infant sleep and the impact it can have on decreasing risk factors for SIDS and SUID. Strategies are outlined for additional education for nurses and parents to enhance adherence to safe sleep guidelines and quality improvement projects aimed at the implementation of culture change are discussed. Going forward it is critical that nurses take an active role in seeking additional education on modifiable risk factors linked to SIDS and SUID and use that education to model and teach safe infant sleep practices with every infant at every encounter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To increase the use of safe sleep practices (SSP) among high-risk infants discharged from Massachusetts (MA) NICUs to 90% in 2 years. DESIGN/METHODS The Neonatal Quality Improvement Collaborative of MA (NeoQIC) is a consortium of neonatal providers that provides infrastructure to lead and manage state-wide quality improvement initiatives. The safe sleep initiative was started in July 2015 with participation of all 10 MA level III NICUs. Based upon the project algorithm, infants are eligible for two sleep practices: SSP or NICU therapeutic positioning (NTP) depending on their gestational age, weight, and clinical illness. Compliance with SSP is defined as: (1) supine positioning, (2) in a flat crib with no incline, (3) without positioning devices, and (4) without soft objects. NTP comprised usual NICU care. Local improvement teams devise intervention strategies, perform weekly crib audits for all NICU infants, and submit data on overall compliance and compliance with each SSP component on a monthly basis to NeoQIC. RESULTS From July 2015 to June 2017, 7261 cribs were audited. Statistical process control charts showed significant improvement in the primary outcome of interest, overall compliance with SSP, for all participating NICUs. Compliance increased from 47.7% at the start of the project to 75.5% by the end of year 1 and to 81.0% by June 2017. CONCLUSIONS This state-wide collaborative has improved SSP compliance in all level III MA NICUs and demonstrated that on a state-wide level, SSPs can be routinely integrated into the care of high-risk infants.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little is known about the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of certified nurse-midwives related to sudden infant death syndrome and infant safe sleep. However, this population is an important and trusted source of information for pregnant women and may provide guidance on infant care. We explored these topics with certified nurse-midwives to identify potential barriers as well as enabling and reinforcing factors associated with providing infant safe sleep education in the prenatal health care environment. METHODS Participants in this cross-sectional survey study were certified nurse-midwives who provide prenatal health care to women in Ohio. Surveys were mailed to all certified nurse-midwives listed with the licensing registry of the Ohio Board of Nursing (N = 333). RESULTS A total of 153 eligible respondents completed the survey for a response rate of 55%. Most participants had at least some knowledge of the infant safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and two-thirds had positive attitudes about providing infant safe sleep education in the prenatal environment. Many participants (61%) perceived that there were barriers to providing prenatal infant safe sleep education, but nearly all (94%) indicated that they were interested in providing this education to their patients. Positive attitudes about providing infant safe sleep education were predictive of whether they discussed this topic with their patients. DISCUSSION Certified nurse-midwives routinely provide guidance on infant care, and it is important that they are familiar with current evidence-based recommendations on infant safe sleep. They should be supported in their desire to provide infant safe sleep education to their prenatal patients. In addition, efforts should be made to improve attitudes and social norms related to providing infant safe sleep education in the prenatal environment.

Abstract
The purpose of this integrative review was to identify interventions that increase compliance of nurses and of parents with safe sleep recommendations for premature infants. Ten studies were included in the final sample, including three studies with a prospective descriptive design, five quality improvement initiatives with an interventional research design, one secondary analysis, and one retrospective medical chart review. Study samples included neonatal nurses and parents of premature infants in NICUs and transitional care nurseries in Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Sample sizes ranged from 5 to 259 NICU parents and 86 to 658 neonatal nurses. The categories of interventions we identified include identifying barriers to compliance, changing hospital policy, and providing safe sleep education for nurses and parents. We conclude that hospitals should have current, evidence-based safe sleep policies with clear transition guidelines for premature infants and that consistent and comprehensive nursing and parental education related to safe sleep should include current American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations and should address potential barriers to compliance.

Abstract
Background Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remains a leading cause of infant death in the United States and in Virginia, the SIDS rate is higher than the national average. We sought to gauge the perceptions among community-identified stakeholders as to community resource needs to reduce SIDS. Methods We used snowball sampling to identify important community stakeholders to be interviewed as key informants. A semi-structured interview lasting 45 min-2 hours was delivered to determine resource needs to reduce SIDS, and whether high-risk community members were aware of SIDS risk factors among stakeholders representing a variety of disciplines. Interviews were conducted in two geographic areas with higher than average rates of infant mortality, an urban district, Winchester City, VA and a rural district, Page County, VA. Results A total of 74 interviews were completed with stakeholders in healthcare, health departments, social services, law enforcement, education/childcare, faith-based institutions, non-profit agencies and non-affiliated community members. The majority of respondents perceive that high-risk community members are not aware of factors that can lead to SIDS (50%). Participants suggested that more "education" is needed to further reduce the rates of SIDS in their communities (73%). Respondents detailed that more pervasive, strategic, and multi-channeled education is necessary to reduce cases of SIDS. Conclusion Community leaders perceive that high-risk community members are not fully aware of risk factors that can lead to SIDS. Maternal/child health stakeholders in these Virginia locales suggested more community-based education as a potential solution to SIDS.

Abstract
PURPOSE We test the hypothesis that ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion significantly increases contralateral positional plagiocephaly. METHODS We reviewed 339 children who had a VP shunt inserted at Birmingham Children's Hospital between 2006 and 2013, noting laterality of shunt insertion and frontal or occipital position. We ascertained the presence of post-operative positional plagiocephaly using the cranial vault asymmetry index. Multinomial logistic regression modelling was used to examine relationships between plagiocephaly, shunt position, gender and age. Adjusted odds and risk ratios for effect of variables on plagiocephaly were calculated. RESULTS Children with occipital VP shunts are at significant risk of developing contralateral positional plagiocephaly, particularly in the first 12 months of life. CONCLUSIONS We recommend careful follow-up and advice regarding head positioning following surgery. There should be consideration for active monitoring to avoid plagiocephaly, including physiotherapy and health visitor interventions. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in selected cases or anterior shunt placement could be considered. A larger national study would be of interest to evaluate the extent of an otherwise correctable problem.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES From the late 1980s 'Back-to-Sleep' (BTS) campaigns were run in most developed countries to increase awareness of the supine position's protective effect against sleep-related infant deaths. Once the media awareness-raising action associated with these campaigns ended, healthcare professionals' role became crucial. The goal of this paper is to determine if healthcare professionals' knowledge and parent advice consistent with evidence-based infant sleep recommendations have changed over the past 20 years. SETTING All studies investigating healthcare professionals' knowledge and/or advice to parents were included in a systematic review. The search was performed in PubMed and in MEDLINE, and 21 studies were identified. RESULTS The correctness of healthcare professionals' knowledge and parent advice about the supine sleeping position increased over the past 20 years. However, the percentage of those aware that parents should avoid putting their babies to sleep in a prone position is decreasing over time: from about 97% in the 1990s to about 90% at the end of the 2000s. CONCLUSIONS The effectiveness of the BTS campaigns in publicising the benefits of the supine position is confirmed by this paper. More and more healthcare professionals know that it is the best position to reduce the risk of sleep-related deaths and they recommend it exclusively. However, the decrease in the knowledge about non-prone positions suggests that the campaigns may not have focused enough on the dangers of the prone position.

Abstract
Introduction: Fetus and neonate spend most of their time sleeping inside and outside the womb. Sleep is considered a crucial action of neonatal period similar to breathing and nutrition. It plays a key role in brain development. Today, it is shown that sleep plays a predominant role in body temperature regulation, energy saving and neuronal detoxification. Sleep is the most important behavioral state of neonates, particularly in preterm ones. Noise, light, invasive treatment and caring activities are among disturbing factors in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that leave negative impacts on brain development through disturbing the sleep process. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study assessed all NICU nurses of Ali-ibn-Abitaleb hospital using the census sampling method. Demographic data was collected through a questionnaire with 10 questions about active sleep (AS) cycles, also referred to as REM, methods for inducing AS and AS specifications in neonates. The questionnaire was distributed between the nurses. After completion, data was analyzed using SPSS 16 and descriptive statistics method. Findings: According to analyses, 24%, 20%, 48% and 92% of nurses gave correct answers to questions about AS cycle, AS in neonates, the role of sleep in saving energy and ideal noise level, respectively. Conclusion: According to results, nurses had a low level of knowledge towards neonatal sleep. All nurses need to know the importance of sleep in preterm neonates. The main role of inducing sleep is to protect the development of the neonates’ brain in the NICU. Those nurses who spend a remarkable portion of their time for caring neonates in the NICU play a significant role in neonatal sleep care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore beliefs and attitude toward infant sleep safety and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) risk reduction behaviors among caregivers of newborns and infants. STUDY DESIGN A convenience sample comprised of 121 caregivers of newborns at Staten Island University Hospital completed a questionnaire. RESULTS Despite an overall favorable attitude toward safe sleep practices, a majority disagreed with use of pacifiers (53%) and believed that swaddling (62%) as well as the use of home monitors (59%) are acceptable practices. The caregivers who recalled being taught about safe sleep had higher perception of infant vulnerability (P<0.001), more confidence in their ability to implement safe sleep behaviors (P<0.0006) and stronger belief that safe sleep behaviors are effective (P<0.01). CONCLUSION Active caregiver education may result in more effective demonstration of safe sleep and SIDS risk reduction behaviors. Further study is needed to assess if favorable attitudes toward safe sleep practices correlate with actual demonstrated behaviors.
