Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relations of early childhood development with maternal health literacy and mothers' early parenting practices. This cross-sectional study was conducted on mothers with children aged 36-59 months (n = 503) with a survey form, Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) and Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32. Children of mothers with sufficient/excellent health literacy levels, children who are breastfed for 12 months and longer, and children with a screen time of 2 h or less were more likely to be ECDI-on-track (AOR (CI) = 2.52 (1.53-4.15); 2.28 (1.41-3.70); 2.04 (1.18-3.50); respectively). In conclusion, children whose mothers were adequately health literate, who were breastfed longer and who had less screen time were better on ECDI indicators. Increasing the knowledge and skills of mothers on early parenting practices and supporting them to be good health literacy will contribute positively to the early development of children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe child development knowledge needs, priorities, and preferences for education to enhance developmental literacy among parents with children admitted to the neonatal unit (NNU). METHODS Two separate cohorts completed a survey; 1) Parents with children graduated from Australian NNUs (n = 316); 2) Parents with infants' inpatient at two South Australian NNUs (n = 209). RESULTS Parents considered it extremely important to understand child development (Graduates: 80%; Inpatients: 71%). Inpatient parents reported lower child development knowledge. Almost half (42%) of graduate parents described the child development education provided by neonatal staff as poor or inadequate. There was consistency in preferences for developmental literacy education provision. Parents desired education to commence during NNU and continue post discharge. Priorities included content specific to preterm birth and how to support child development over the first two years of life. Individualised education by a Neonatal Nurse/Midwife was most preferred. CONCLUSION Mothers and fathers value guidance to support their child's development during NNU admission and early childhood. Our study highlights the importance of improved early developmental literacy education for parents with children admitted to the neonatal unit. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Our findings can be used to inform the creation of future educational resources targeting improved parent developmental literacy.

Abstract
Assessment of (digital) health literacy in the hospital can raise staff awareness and facilitate tailored communication, leading to improved health outcomes. Assessment tools should ideally address multiple domains of health literacy, fit to the complex hospital context and have a short administration time, to enable routine assessment. This review aims to create an overview of tools for measuring (digital) health literacy in hospitals. A search in Scopus, PubMed, WoS and CINAHL, following PRISMA guidelines, generated 7252 hits; 251 studies were included in which 44 assessment tools were used. Most tools (57%) were self-reported and 27% reported an administration time of <5 min. Almost all tools addressed the domain 'understanding' (98%), followed by 'access' (52%), 'apply' (50%), 'appraise' (32%), 'numeracy' (18%), and 'digital' (18%). Only four tools were frequently used: the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy for Adults ((S)TOFHLA), the Brief Health Literacy Screener (BHLS), and the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). While the NVS and BHLS have a low administration time, they cover only two domains. HLQ covers the most domains: access, understanding, appraise, and apply. None of these four most frequently used tools measured digital skills. This review can guide health professionals in choosing an instrument that is feasible in their daily practice, and measures the required domains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Black infants in the United States have the highest incidence of both infant mortality (IM) and preterm birth among all racial/ethnic groups. The IM disparity for Black preterm infants often occurs after neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge, when parents become the primary caregivers. The revised Kenner Transition Model (KTM) is situation specific and comprised 5 interrelated domains of parental need after NICU discharge that have not been previously applied to the transition from NICU to home of Black infants. PURPOSE This study's purpose was to explore the conceptual fit of parental readiness to care for their Black preterm infants after NICU discharge with the revised KTM. METHODS A qualitative descriptive research approach was used for this single-site study of NICU parents of Black preterm infants. Qualitative analysis of 10 parents' perceptions before NICU discharge was via semantic content analysis; data were organized into categories aligned with the KTM. The Transition Questionnaire (TQ), an adjunct to the KTM, provided self- report quantitative data. RESULTS All parents endorsed the "Information Needs," "Stress and Coping," and "Professional Support" domains of the KTM. Parent TQ responses indicated perceptions of moderate to high levels of home transition readiness after NICU discharge. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH The domains of the revised KTM were affirmed by parents of Black preterm infants in this study via coded interview and TQ responses. Additional study exploring the clinical assessment of transition readiness with theoretical grounding in diverse NICU families is warranted. Abstract
PurposeParents' health literacy is an important element to ensure the sound health of children. One of the major purposes of this study was to systematically collect and review the literature that identified the relationship between two variables: parents' health literacy and their child's health.Design/methodology/approachTo meet the purpose, the authors searched four well-reputed research databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and LISTA (Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts) comprehensively to collect the relevant research on the topic. Except for books, various types of content from different years were used for this review. The investigators used Preferred Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines to select eligible studies for this review. The authors also assessed the quality of the reviewed research in the light of well-reputed quality guidelines shared by Boynton and Greenhalgh (2004).FindingsThe majority of the reviewed studies found a statistically significant relationship between parents' health literacy and the health of their children. Findings also identified that the majority of the reviewed literature scored from 9 to 12 on the quality assessment criteria. Results also highlighted that the majority of the reviewed research on parents' health literacy and child health has been conducted in the USA and utilized quantitative methods to conduct research on the topic under this study.Research limitations/implicationsThis systematic review has multiple theoretical and practical implications for parents, policymakers and researchers.Originality/valueThis is the first systematically collected and reviewed paper on the relationship between parents' health literacy and child health.

Abstract
Black infants have twice the incidence of infant mortality (IM), death before the first birthday, and preterm birth in comparison to other US racial/ethnic groups; these factors make Black infants a high-risk group. The literature on the factors impacting caregivers and home environments for these infants is sparse. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore perceived parental readiness to care for their Black preterm infants at home after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Ten NICU parents of Black preterm infants completed a structured interview and self-report questionnaires before hospital discharge; data were analyzed using descriptive and semantic content methods. Coded parent responses were categorized as Parent Protector of Infants' Health (n = 94, 29.2%); Hindrances to Parental Readiness for Transition to Home (n = 97, 30.1%), and Parent as Partner in NICU to Home Transition (n = 131, 40.6%). All parents rated themselves "confident" (n = 6) or "very confident" (n = 4) in their ability to care for their infant after NICU discharge. Partnership with the healthcare team was described as involving health information resources, effective communication, and, most importantly, support for the parental role as infant protector for transition to home for their high-risk infant after NICU discharge.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivo analisar a percepção dos pais sobre as práticas de educação em saúde desenvolvidas pelos enfermeiros na Unidade Neonatal que facilitaram a aquisição de competências parentais para uma tomada de decisão fundamentada. Método estudo exploratório e descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa. Participaram 13 pais com filhos internados, pela primeira vez, em uma Unidade Neonatal portuguesa. Os dados foram colhidos entre fevereiro e agosto de 2020, por meio de grupos focais, processados no software Interface de R pour Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionneires, através da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente e da Análise de Similitude. Resultados da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente, emergiram quatro classes: “Necessidades de informação”, “Lacunas na informação”, “Disponibilidade para informar”; “Práticas facilitadoras da educação em saúde”. Conclusão e implicações para a prática os pais consideraram como práticas facilitadoras da educação em saúde a tecnologia digital aliada à disponibilidade dos enfermeiros para informar e explicar, bem como propiciar um ambiente empático e informal. Tal resultado pode subsidiar o desenvolvimento de intervenções de enfermagem de educação em saúde para pais na Unidade Neonatal, com recurso à tecnologia digital.

Abstract
Health literacy is an important public health goal and of particular relevance when people are starting a family. Health literacy is thought to be crucial for the management of the manifold demands relating to child health which are imposed on parents. The aim of this study was to investigate health literacy in a large sample of mothers of newborn children in Germany. Sociodemographic factors and health literacy (as assessed by the HLS-EU health care scale) were analyzed using data from 2403 mothers of newborns who take part in an ongoing birth cohort study (KUNO-Kids health study). Almost 40% of mothers had a limited health literacy level. Being primiparous was significantly associated with lower health literacy, while having a high level of education compared with a medium level of education was significantly associated with higher health literacy.Conclusion: The finding of a substantial amount of mothers experiencing problems in dealing with and navigating through the healthcare system is important for the design of pediatric health services.What is Known:• New parents are confronted with many recommendations about child health.• Health literacy of parents is considered crucial for child health outcomes.What is New:• Many mothers of newborns have a limited health literacy level.• First-time mothers and mothers with lower education are particularly at risk for low health literacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy, social support and self-efficacy are important concepts in mothers of preterm neonates. The purpose of study was to determine the association between health literacy, social support and self-efficacy of mothers of preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS This descriptive correlational study was conducted from November 2017 to January 2019 on 200 mothers of preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of selected hospitals affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Data were collected using demographic, maternal health literacy, maternal self-efficacy and multidimensional scale of perceived social support questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential tests (Pearson correlation coefficient) using SPSS-PC (v.23) and R software. RESULTS The data showed 23.5% of mothers had high likelihood of low health literacy, 45.5% had possibility of low health literacy and 31% had adequate with mean score 2.57 ± 1.28. Also, 9.5% of participants had low perceived social support, 62.5% moderate perceived social support and 28% high perceived social support. Maternal self-efficacy score was 52.54 ± 8.06. Pearson's correlation coefficient analyses revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between maternal health literacy and social support (r = 0.304, p < .001). Also maternal health literacy was positively correlated with the self-efficacy (r = 0.292, p < .001) and self-efficacy was positively correlated with social support (r = 0.440, p < .001). CONCLUSION Health literacy, social support and self-efficacy of mothers of preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in Iran are related together. Therefore, neonatal care nurses need to note this in care of this clients and adopt strategies to enhance them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of limited health literacy in parents of infants born ≤32 and 0/7 weeks and if health literacy changes during hospitalization. STUDY DESIGN Multi-site, prospective cohort study measuring health literacy using the Parent Health Literacy Activities Test, which estimates caregivers' ability to complete tasks such as reading prescription labels and preparing bottles. Data were analyzed using parametric and nonparametric comparison tests and multivariable regression to control for confounders. RESULT Of the 137 participants, 31% missed ≥3 questions of 8. Scores were not associated with admission characteristics or NICU complications. Lower scores were associated with lower nurses' (rho 0.20, p = 0.04) but not parents' (rho -0.12, p = 0.22) ratings of discharge readiness. Scores improved slightly from admission to discharge (p = 0.049). CONCLUSION Many parents have difficulty answering questions related to basic infant care tasks. NICUs should ensure that communication and discharge planning are mindful of health literacy.

Abstract
Background: Caring for a child at home after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is challenging for parents, and discharge education is critical to ensure parents are prepared. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a discharge video intervention (DVI) as an adjunct to standard discharge teaching (SDT). Method: A two-phase study was conducted at an urban children’s hospital in the western United States. Phase 1 involved SDT alone followed by nurse-administered proficiency testing of parent knowledge in caring for their children at home using a 4-point Likert-type scale of parents of children post-allogeneic HSCT. These results informed the DVI, created in English and Spanish in Phase 2. The DVI content included topics on home cleaning, notifying the medical team, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), diet and visitor restrictions, and outpatient visits. In Phase 2, the DVI was viewable by parents who also received SDT. Parents’ proficiency was evaluated using the same procedure as in Phase 1. Results: Thirty-four parents participated: 17 in Phase 1 (SDT), 17 in Phase 2 (SDT + DVI). The DVI was viewed by parents in Phase 2 approximately twice prior to discharge. Parents in Phase 2 had higher proficiency scores on home cleaning, signs/symptoms of GVHD, and diet restriction. Parents in Phase 1 had higher proficiency regarding notifying the team. Conclusions: The DVI was feasible and demonstrated incremental increases in parent’s proficiency related to some discharge topics.

Abstract
To investigate the needs of parents of premature infants hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and explore associated factors. This study includes a convenience sample of 198 parents of premature infants hospitalized in a NICU in Chenzhou, Hunan province, China. Parents completed a study-specific questionnaire and the Chinese version of Critical Care Family Need Inventory (CCFNI). Analysis was conducted by multiple linear regression. Parents rated 30 of 45 items on the Chinese version of the CCFNI as important or very important. Items on the assurance, information, and proximity subscales were perceived as the most important, while items on the comfort subscale were the least important. Gender of parents and experience of visiting a NICU were significantly associated with the total needs of the parents. These insights should be used to inform clinical practice in the NICU.
