Abstract
AIM The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of the preoperative serum albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS Preoperative ALBI data from 1506 CRC patients were categorized into high-value and low-value groups, and the clinicopathological characteristics of these groups were compared. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was employed to investigate the risk factors associated with distant metastasis. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were utilized to analyze the relationship between ALBI scores and 5-year distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). RESULTS The incidence of distant metastasis in group B (ALBI ≥ -2.4) was significantly higher at 28.81% compared to group A (ALBI < -2.4), which had an incidence of 23.36% (p = 0.018). ALBI score ≥ -2.4 was identified as an independent risk factor for postoperative distant metastasis of CRC (HR = 1.251, 95%CI: 1.021-1.533, p = 0.031). The incidence of 5-year DMFS was significantly lower in the ALBI ≥ -2.4 group compared to that observed in the ALBI < -2.4 group (χ2 = 5.97, p = 0.015, log-rank test). CONCLUSION The ALBI score of ≥ -2.4 emerges as an independent risk factor for the occurrence of distant metastases following CRC surgery.

Abstract
Background The most common type of cancer of the digestive system is hepatocellular carcinoma. In China, many patients harbour HBV. The lin28B/Let-7c/MYC axis is associated with the occurrence of many cancers. Therefore, we aimed to illuminate the function of the lin28B/Let-7c/MYC axis in hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to evaluate the critical involvement of lin28B and Let-7c in the carcinogenesis of human hepatocellular carcinoma (B-HCC). Methods Data from the GEO database were used to analyse differentially expressed genes and IRGs. A protein − protein interaction (PPI) network and Venn diagram were generated to analyse relationships. Real-time RT-PCR, Western blotting, and cell counting kit-8 assays were used to examine the association of lin28B, Let-7c, and MYC with cell proliferation. Results A total of 2552 functionally annotated differentially expressed RNAs were analysed in HBV patients from the GSE135860 database. In addition, 46 let-7c target genes were screened in HBV patients, and the interactions were analysed through PPI network analysis. The results confirmed that Let-7c and its target genes play a key role in HBV-related diseases. Next, we discovered a gradual decrease in Let-7c expression during the progression from HBV-associated chronic hepatitis (B-CH) and HBV-associated liver cirrhosis (B-LC) to B-HCC. We found evidence for a negative association between lin28B expression and Let-7c expression. The expression of MYC was obviously upregulated when Let-7c was inhibited. Conclusion Our results highlight that Let-7c and lin28B participate in the carcinogenesis of HBV-associated diseases through the lin28B/Let-7c/MYC axis. Abstract
Significance: As the central metabolic organ, the liver is exposed to a variety of potentially cytotoxic, proinflammatory, profibrotic, and carcinogenic stimuli. To protect the organism from these deleterious effects, the liver has evolved a number of defense systems, which include antioxidant substrates and enzymes, anti-inflammatory tools, enzymatic biotransformation systems, and metabolic pathways. Recent Advances: One of the pivotal systems that evolved during phylogenesis was the heme catabolic pathway. Comprising the important enzymes heme oxygenase and biliverdin reductase, this complex pathway has a number of key functions including enzymatic activities, but also cell signaling, and DNA transcription. It further generates two important bile pigments, biliverdin and bilirubin, as well as the gaseous molecule carbon monoxide. These heme degradation products have potent antioxidant, immunosuppressive, and cytoprotective effects. Recent data suggest that the pathway participates in the regulation of metabolic and hormonal processes implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatic and other diseases. Critical Issues: This review discusses the impact of the heme catabolic pathway on major liver diseases, with particular focus on the involvement of cellular targeting and signaling in the pathogenesis of these conditions. Future Directions: To utilize the biological consequences of the heme catabolic pathway, several unique therapeutic strategies have been developed. Research indicates that pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and lifestyle modifications positively affect the pathway, delivering potentially long-term clinical benefits.
