Development of generic student engagement scale in higher education: An application on healthcare students

AIM

Student engagement is an important factor to the success of higher education. This study aimed to develop a Generic Student Engagement Scale (GSES) for face-to-face and online learning.

DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional psychometric study.

METHODS

We tested the psychometric properties of GSES in 451 students at the school of nursing and health studies undertaking online and face-to-face learning at a local university in Hong Kong between 2016 and 2018.

RESULTS

Content validity, face validity and test-retest reliability of GSES were satisfactory. The 29-item GSES contains five factors "self-regulated learning," "cognitive strategy use," "experienced emotion," "teacher-student interaction," and "enjoyment of school life" with the good model fit. The GSES is a reliable and valid psychometric instrument to measure student engagement in face-to-face and online learning among undergraduates and higher diploma students. Our results implied that student engagement can be assessed in routine or research by using our instrument.

The Development of an e-platform to Strengthen Nursing in Kazakhstan: A Systematic Review and a Delphi Study to Define Requirements

Background:

To strengthen nursing in Kazakhstan, an e-platform has been developed to support knowledge sharing and collaboration in nursing education, nursing research, and clinical practice.

Objective:

This study aims to identify and prioritize requirements for an e-platform to strengthen nursing in the trinity of nursing education, nursing research, and clinical practice.

Methods:

The research was conducted using an exploratory sequential mixed-method design, including a systematic review and a Delphi study. The systematic review utilized search terms concerning nursing, e-platform, research, and education. The Delphi study included two rounds of questionnaires among a panel of Kazakh and European experts. Outcomes were analyzed using content validity ratios and level of consensus thresholds.

Results:

The systematic review generated eight studies and identified nine categories of requirements to be covered by four groups in the Delphi study. These four groups were content-related, functional, usability, and technical requirements. The study generated 52 essential and 15 useful requirements, which are common in the literature and in experts’ opinions.

Conclusion:

The list of requirements is well embedded in the literature as well as in the national context of nursing in Kazakhstan. Therefore, the e-platform developed according to these requirements will contribute to improving the trinity of nursing education, research, and practice. Although the list is context-specific, when validated by a panel of experts, it is universally applicable when developing e-platforms for nursing.

Use of an interactive multimedia e-book to improve nursing students'' sexual harassment prevention knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behavior, and learning motivation: A randomized controlled study

BACKGROUND

Nursing essentially involves working closely with patients both physically and psychologically. Nurses, particularly inexperienced nursing students, are often at great risk of sexual harassment.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effects of a clinical-based sexual harassment prevention e-book on nursing students' knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behaviors, and learning motivation.

DESIGN

A randomized, controlled, experimental study.

SETTING

Nursing Department at a private university in Taiwan.

PARTICIPANTS

Senior nursing students who had finished the required professional internship or were undergoing community nursing or psychiatric nursing internship.

METHODS

Participants were randomly allocated to intervention (e-book, n = 33) and control (video and brochure, n = 33) groups. They were asked to complete a structured questionnaire before, after, and 2 weeks after the intervention to evaluate their sexual harassment knowledge, prevention strategies, coping behaviors, and learning motivation.

RESULTS

In the posttest, the e-book group scored significantly higher in the sexual harassment prevention knowledge (p < .05), sexual harassment prevention strategy (p < .01), and ARCS motivation (p < .001) subscales than the control group, but not in the coping behavior subscale. In terms of group and time effects, knowledge, coping behavior, prevention strategy, and motivation scores were all significantly different in the first posttest (p < .001). In the second posttest, coping behavior and ARCS motivation scores remained significantly different (p < .01).

CONCLUSION

The interactive multimedia e-book effectively improved the sexual harassment prevention knowledge and competence of nursing students. This method can be employed as a supplementary material in nursing education, internship guidance, and nursing on-the-job education.

Development of a nursing diagnosis educational software program

INTRODUCTION

The human-computer interaction is essential in simulated electronic systems associated with teaching-learning activities. Interactive clinical cases reinforce the diagnostic reasoning ability, a stage of the advanced Nursing Process.

PURPOSE

To build educational software, based on NANDA International, to improve the accuracy of nursing diagnoses.

METHOD

Methodological study in three stages: preparation and validation of case studies; construction; homologation and evaluation. Held between January / 2012 and December / 2013, in a university hospital in southern Brazil. Teachers, nurses, undergraduate students and graduate students in nursing and information technology participated. Approved by the Research Ethics Committee (130035).

RESULTS

Construction of five case studies and two versions of the software: one simulates the reasoning process for establishing the diagnosis; another, aimed at teachers, makes it possible to edit/create cases.

CONCLUSION

The software helps in the teaching-learning process, generating accurate diagnoses, supporting more appropriate interventions.

The Comparison of the Effects of Multimedia Tools and Traditional Methods on Neurosurgery Learning

Background: Educational multimedia software as a student-oriented educational tool provides an optimal educational condition, which allows students to view surgical videos and photographs and fill the gap between theoretical and practical training. Objectives: The present study aimed to compare the effects of multimedia tools and traditional methods on the neuroscience learning of the undergraduate students of surgical technology in Hamedan, Iran. Methods: This quasi-experimental, interventional study was conducted on 32 undergraduate students of four surgical technology courses, who were selected via convenience sampling. Neurosurgery sessions were divided into two parts, including traditional and multimedia-based education, which were used to teach the multimedia software in the field of neurosurgical topics (movies, photographs, and atlases). The learning of the students was measured by a written test. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 23 using t-test, and paired t-test was also used to compare the differences between the traditional and multimedia education. Results: The multimedia education was more effective compared to the traditional method of learning in neurosurgery education (P < 0.001). Conclusions: According to the results, multimedia education could be used as a new and effective educational method in operating surgical technology and training.
