Application of virtual reality in nursing communication education: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Communication skills are very important for nursing students. As a developing teaching technology, virtual reality is used in nursing communication education. However, the teaching effect and the effective teaching elements are not clear.

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review was designed to summarize the characteristics of interventions and teaching design of nursing communication education based on virtual reality and to extract the common positive features to provide a reference for further nursing communication education.

METHODS

Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, we systematically searched eight databases in December 2021, and an updated search was performed in June 2023. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used for study appraisal.

RESULTS

A total of thirteen studies were included in the systematic review. Although differences were observed in the designs, evaluations and communication results of these studies, we extracted some elements that can be used to promote positive communication results, such as a combination of an intervention design based on theory with communication strategies, positive feedback and reporting.

CONCLUSIONS

Virtual reality-based education shows mixed teaching effect in improving nursing students' communication cognition and skills. Further studies are necessary to verify the practical influence of intervention design combined with teaching methods on improving nursing students' communication and clinical communication coping ability.

Educational Outcomes in Undergraduate Nursing: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Baccalaureate nursing education has experienced tremendous challenges requiring new flexibility of moving among traditional classroom, online education, and other teaching modalities to improve student outcomes, combined with the pressing need for determining which educational methods deliver quality instruction while having a positive effect on outcomes. This systematic review explored different teaching modalities and measurable educational student outcomes in undergraduate baccalaureate education.

METHOD

A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

RESULTS

Of the 20 articles included in this systematic review, simulation, face-to-face, asynchronous, problem-based learning, gaming, flipped classrooms, reflective writing, tweets, and podcasts were represented. Three distinct educational outcomes that were identified included competence, confidence, and communication.

CONCLUSION

A variety of educational methodologies drives positive outcomes in educating the next generation of nurses to have increased competence, confidence, and improved communication. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(6):380-386.].

Metaverse applied to musculoskeletal pathology: Orthoverse and Rehabverse

The Metaverse is 'an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds.' It incorporates digitally created realities into the real world, involves virtual copies of existing places and changes the physical reality by superimposing digital aspects, allowing its users to interact with these elements in an immersive, real-time experience. The applications of the Metaverse are numerous, with an increasing number of experiences in the field of musculoskeletal disease management. In the field of medical training, the Metaverse can help facilitate the learning experience and help develop complex clinical skills. In clinical care, the Metaverse can help clinicians perform orthopedic surgery more accurately and safely and can improve pain management, the performance of rehabilitation techniques and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Virtualization can also optimize aspects of healthcare information and management, increasing the effectiveness of procedures and the functioning of organizations. This optimization can be especially relevant in departments that are under significant care provider pressure. However, we must not lose sight of the fundamental challenges that still need to be solved, such as ensuring patient privacy and fairness. Several studies are underway to assess the feasibility and safety of the Metaverse.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Neonatal Nursing Practicum and Extended Reality Simulation Training Needs: A Descriptive and Cross-Sectional Study

This study investigated the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) clinical practicum status during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for extended reality (XR)-based training for neonatal care. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 132 prelicensing nursing students. Data were analyzed using importance-performance analysis and Borich needs analysis. Students wanted to use XR to learn about treating high-risk preterm infants. COVID-19 limited clinical training in NICUs, and most students preferred training in XR programs to improve their nursing competency for neonates. There is a large demand for nursing skills concerning high-risk newborns and hands-off training.

Systematic Bibliometric Analysis of Research Hotspots and Trends on the Application of Virtual Reality in Nursing

Background

With the emergence of the metaverse, virtual reality, as a digital technology, must be getting hotter. High quality virtual reality related nursing knowledge scene learning is gradually replacing traditional education and intervention skills.

Objective

This systematic study aimed to gain insights into the overall application of virtual reality technology in the study of nursing.

Methods

Citations downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection database for use in VR in nursing publications published from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021, were considered in the research. Information retrieval was analyzed using https://bibliometric.com/app, CiteSpace.5.8. R3, and VOS viewer.

Results

A total of 408 institutions from 95 areas contributed to relevant publications, of which the United States is the most influential country in this research field. The clustering labels of cited documents were obtained from the citing documents. Virtual simulation, virtual learning, clinical skills, and dementia are the clustering labels of co-cited documents. The burst keywords represented the research frontiers in 2020–2021, which were knowledge and simulation.

Conclusion

Virtual nursing has had an impact on both nurses and clients. With the emergence of the concept of the metaverse, the research and application of virtual reality technology in nursing will gradually increase.
