Effect of thermal insulation on preventing hypothermia during laparoscopic radical resection for colorectal cancer

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of thermal insulation nursing in the operating room on preventing hypothermia during laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer.

METHODS

Sixty colorectal cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic radical resection from June 2022 to August 2023 were included. The research group received thermal insulation nursing interventions using medical heaters and infusion heaters, while the control group received routine nursing measures. Clinical data including vital signs, intraoperative and postoperative complications, recovery time, nursing satisfaction, and psychological and sleep status were compared between the two groups.

RESULTS

Thirty minutes after skin incision, both groups showed decreased body temperature, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to pre-surgery levels, with no significant difference between groups (P > 0.05). However, the research group exhibited lower rates of intraoperative hypothermia, postoperative infection, and other complications, as well as shorter postoperative recovery times, hospital stays, anxiety, and depression scores compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, the research group demonstrated higher comfort scores, shorter sleep latency, longer actual sleep time, and higher nursing satisfaction rate (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Thermal insulation nursing intervention in the operating room during laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer contributes to maintaining vital signs, preventing intraoperative hypothermia, reducing postoperative complications, expediting recovery, and improving psychological well-being and sleep quality. This intervention enhances patient comfort and nursing satisfaction in perioperative care.

Perioperative active warming strategies in children: a protocol for a multicentre, prospective, randomized controlled trial

Introduction

Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) refers to a core body temperature lower than 36.0 °C, which can contribute to many adverse events. The special physiological characteristics in children further increase the incidence of IPH. Therefore, it is very important to perform effective perioperative warming measures for children. Traditional passive warming measures with additional layers have limited thermal insulation effects. Active warming measures might be the better choice, and most measures have achieved good effects in adults. This study combines a variety of active warming measures to propose perioperative active warming strategies and aims to verify the feasibility and thermal insulation effects of perioperative active warming strategies in children.

Methods

This study is a multicentre, prospective, randomized controlled trial. From August 2022 to July 2024, 400 paediatric patients undergoing elective surgery will be recruited in four centres and randomly divided into the active warming strategies group and control group at a ratio of 1:1. The primary outcome is the perioperative cumulative hypothermia effect value (Σ ΔTi × Δti, i = 1…, n). Multiple complications covering the anaesthesia recovery period and postoperative hospitalization will be considered as secondary outcomes to comprehensively analyse the prognosis.

Advances in biotechnology and clinical therapy in the field of peripheral nerve regeneration based on magnetism

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the most common neurological diseases. Recent studies on nerve cells have provided new ideas for the regeneration of peripheral nerves and treatment of physical trauma or degenerative disease-induced loss of sensory and motor neuron functions. Accumulating evidence suggested that magnetic fields might have a significant impact on the growth of nerve cells. Studies have investigated different magnetic field properties (static or pulsed magnetic field) and intensities, various magnetic nanoparticle-encapsulating cytokines based on superparamagnetism, magnetically functionalized nanofibers, and their relevant mechanisms and clinical applications. This review provides an overview of these aspects as well as their future developmental prospects in related fields.

Can the hyperthermia-mediated heat shock factor/heat shock protein 70 pathway dampen the cytokine storm during SARS-CoV-2 infection?

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a major global public health problem. Infection by this virus involves many pathophysiological processes, such as a "cytokine storm," that is, very aggressive inflammatory response that offers new perspectives for the management and treatment of patients. Here, we analyse relevant mechanism involved in the hyperthermia-mediated heat shock factors (HSFs)/heat shock proteins (HSP)70 pathway which may provide a possible treatment tool.
