Higher intakes of fruits and vegetables are related to fewer menopausal symptoms: a cross-sectional study

Comparison of predictive effect of the dietary inflammatory index and empirically derived food-based dietary inflammatory index on the menopause-specific quality of life and its complications

INTRODUCTION

Menopause, defined as the cessation of menstruation for at least 12 months, is one of the important stages of a woman's life cycle. Some hormonal variations occur during the transition to menopause, which affects women's quality of life. Recently, the role of dietary factors in alleviating symptoms has been investigated.

AIM OF THIS STUDY

We tried to investigate the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII), food-based dietary inflammatory index (FDII) and quality of life, and menopausal symptoms, comparing their predictive power and suggesting the best cut-off point.

METHODOLOGY

One hundred forty-nine postmenopausal women were included in the cross-sectional study. After collecting data by interview, the desired variables were calculated. Logistic regression and ROC curves were used to investigate the relationship and predictive power of DII and FDII with menopausal symptoms.

FINDINGS

We observed that both DII and FDII were significantly associated with the severity of sexual symptoms. The first tertile of DII (OR = 0.252, P-value = 0.002) and FDII (OR = 0.316, P-value = 0.014) had a significantly lower odds ratio for severe to moderate symptoms compared to the third tertile. Both inflammatory indices had significant predictive power in predicting the probability of having severe to moderate poor quality of life (FDII (p-value = 0.004) > DII (p-value = 0.006)) and sexual symptoms (DII (p-value = 0.002) > FDII (p-value = 0.003)). Also, regarding the physical subtype, only FDII (p-value = 0.002) results were significant.

CONCLUSION

Both dietary inflammatory indices appear to be suitable for predicting quality of life, but FDII had slightly more predictive power. It seems that the quality of life and severity of menopausal symptoms may be improved, particularly with regard to sexual symptoms, by following an anti-inflammatory diet.

The potential of Mangifera indica Linn. and Musa acuminata extracts to attenuate 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2 )-induced DNA oxidative damage in MCF-10A cells by upregulating detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes

Nowadays, there have been attempts to use phytochemicals in fruits to reduce the risk of suffering a given sickness. In this work, we studied the potential effects of mango (cultivar "Nam Dok Mai") and banana (cultivar "Khai") to attenuate DNA oxidative damage in MCF-10A cells induced by 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE₂ ). The effects of mango extract (MNE) and banana extract (BKE) were comparable with three carotenoid compounds, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. The oxidative-induced DNA damage was evaluated by 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) reduction. 4-OHE₂ -induced DNA oxidative damage in MCF-10A cells showed a decrease in 8-OHdG formation when treated with MNE and BKE. Both fruit extracts also enabled the regaining production of Phase II detoxifying (GSTs and NQO1) and antioxidant (SOD, GPx, and CAT) enzymes during 4-OHE₂ -induced DNA oxidative damage in the MCF-10A cells when compared with the untreated control. These results indicate that MNE and BKE can exert potential mitigating effects against 4-OHE₂ -induced DNA oxidative damage in MCF-10A cells by enhancing the activities of detoxifying and antioxidant enzyme. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Long-term exposure to estrogen increases the risk of sickness since oxidative stress via the estrogen pathway, leading to DNA damage. This study indicated that mango (cultivar "Nam Dok Mai") extract contains β-carotene and lycopene, while banana (cultivar "Khai") extract contains β-carotene and lutein, which act as natural antioxidants. Both fruit extracts have preventive properties against oxidative DNA damage and are potentially good supplements for women taking E₂ between HRT.

Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review of Micro- and Macro-Nutrient Intakes and Trajectories of Macro-Nutrient Supply in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is experiencing a nutrition transition, characterized by the emergence of overnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies. No previous study has comparatively examined nutrient intake in adults across countries in the EMR. This review examined the adequacy of nutrients in adults living in the EMR. Moreover, it analyzed the food balance sheets (FBS) for 1961–2018 to identify the trajectory of energy supply from macro-nutrients in the EMR. A systematic search was conducted from January 2012 to September 2020. Only observational studies were retained with a random sampling design. An assessment of the methodological quality was conducted. Levels of nutrient daily intake and their adequacy compared to the daily reference intake of the Institute of Medicine were reported across the region. No studies were identified for half of the region’s countries. Although nutrient energy intake was satisfactory overall, fat and carbohydrate intake were high. Intake of vitamin D, calcium, potassium, zinc, and magnesium were below that recommended. The analysis of the FBS data allowed for the identification of four linear patterns of trajectories, with countries in the EMR best fitting the ‘high-energy-supply from carbohydrate’ group. This systematic review warrants multi-sectorial commitment to optimize nutrient intake.

Predictors in Initiating and Maintaining Nutritional Behaviors to Deal With Menopausal Symptoms Based on Multi-Theory Model

This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 on 204 postmenopausal women aged 45-55 years who referred to Yazd health centers to determine the predictors in initiating and sustaining nutritional behaviors to deal with menopausal symptoms based on the multi-theory model (MTM). The participants were required to complete the demographic information questionnaire and a researcher-made questionnaire over the effective nutritional behaviors in menopause based on the MTM. The data were summarized and analyzed using SPSS 18 and AMOS23 by running descriptive indicators and path analysis. Behavioral confidence (β = 0.61, P < 0.001) had a higher predictive power in initiating a nutritional behavior compared to the changes in the physical environment (β  = 0.13, P < 0.05) and participatory dialogue (β = 0. 10, p < 0.05). Among the behavior-related constructs, only emotional transformation (β = 0.78, P < 0.001) could predict the behavioral sustaining. A positive and significant association was observed between nutritional behavior sustaining and quality of life (β = -0.41, P < 0.001). The MTM is an appropriate model for predicting the initiation and sustaining of the nutritional behaviors in dealing with menopause. The behavioral confidence, changes in physical environment, and participatory dialogue constructs played a significant role in predicting the initiation of behavior. The emotional transformation construct was also an important predictor in maintaining nutritional behaviors to deal with menopausal symptoms. So, future researchers are recommended to conduct MTM-based investigations according to the predictive constructs among menopausal women.
