Abstract
The association between prevalent fractures and tooth loss in postmenopausal women remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the association between prevalent vertebral and nonvertebral fractures, the number of teeth present at baseline, and the number of teeth lost during follow-up in postmenopausal Japanese women. This cross-sectional study enrolled 843 participants (mean age 68.3 years). The number of teeth at follow-up was evaluated in 655 women in this longitudinal study. The participants were divided into four groups according to their prevalent fracture status: no fractures, vertebral fractures alone, nonvertebral fractures alone, and both fracture types. After adjusting for covariates, Poisson regression analyses were performed to investigate differences in the number of teeth at baseline and that lost during the follow-up period among the four groups. Participants with prevalent vertebral fractures alone had significantly fewer teeth at baseline than those in participants without fractures or nonvertebral fractures alone (p < 0.001 for both). Furthermore, they lost more teeth during the follow-up period than did those with no fractures (p = 0.021) and tended to lose more teeth than did those with nonvertebral fractures alone or both prevalent fracture types. We observed no significant difference in the number of teeth lost between the participants with nonvertebral fractures alone and those with no fractures. Postmenopausal women with prevalent vertebral fractures may be at a higher risk of tooth loss. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Objective To evaluate the relationship between periodontitis and postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods This research was carried out according to the principles laid down by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guideline statement. We searched the Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, and WanFang databases from inception to July 1, 2023 to collect all relevant publications, with no restrictions on publication date or Languages. Cochrane's tool for assessing RoB was used to evaluate the RoB for RCTs. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the RoB for cohort studies and case-control studies. Mean differences (MD) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were used for analysis of continuous data. Heterogeneity was measured using the I2 statistic. Revman 5.4 software was used for the meta-analysis. Results 28 observational studies with 19611 patients, including 5813 cases in the postmenopausal osteoporosis group and 13798 cases in the non-osteoporosis group. The studies showed that the degrees of clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), simplified oral hygiene index (OHIS), and percentage of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP) in the postmenopausal osteoporosis group were higher than those in the non-osteoporosis group[CAL(MD = 0.89(mm), 95 % CI [0.48,1.30], p < 0.00001), PD (MD = 0.27(mm), 95 % CI [0.13, 0.41], p = 0.0001), GR (MD = 0.28(mm), 95 % CI [0.20, 0.35], p < 0.00001), OHIS (MD = 1.32,95 % CI [1.12,1.51], p < 0.00001), BOP(MD = 12.71(%), 95 % CI [3.24,22.18], p = 0.009)]. Eleven studies found that bone mineral density (BMD) in the postmenopausal osteoporosis group was lower than that in non-osteoporosis group (MD = -0.41(U/cm2), 95 % CI [-0.77,-0.05], p = 0.03). The combined analysis results of the studies in the two groups showed that there were no significant differences in the loss of alveolar crestal height (ACH)[(MD = -1.76(%),95%CI [-3.64,0.12], p = 0.07)]. Conclusion Postmenopausal osteoporosis patients are more likely to suffer from periodontitis, and the condition is easily aggravated.

Abstract
Results on the relationships between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms and postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) susceptibility and bone mineral density (BMD) are conflicting. The aim of the study is to identify more eligible studies that calculated pooled OR and WMD with 95% CI to assess their associations. Overall, there were significant correlations between VDR ApaI, VDR FokI and PMOP susceptibility. Subgroup analysis showed that VDR ApaI polymorphism significantly decreased the osteoporosis risk in Caucasian postmenopausal women. In Asian populations, VDR BsmI and VDR FokI were associated with an increased risk of PMOP. As to the associations between VDR polymorphisms and BMD, Caucasian PMOP women carrying the ApaI aa genotype were at risk of high BMD in femoral neck, and low femoral neck BMD was observed in Caucasian PMOP women with FokI Ff genotype. PMOP women with the Cdx2 GA genotype had a lower lumbar spine BMD in overall and Caucasian populations compared with PMOP women with GG genotype. Different VDR gene polymorphisms have different impacts on PMOP risk and BMD.

Abstract
The authors evaluated the association of reduced bone stiffness of the calcaneus with clinical attachment loss (CAL) and tooth loss. The authors analyzed data from 4,678 subjects (2,384 women), aged 20 to 88 y, from the second follow-up of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-2) and the baseline examination of the SHIP-Trend cohort. Bone stiffness, characterized by the stiffness index (SI) and the osteoporotic fracture risk (OFR), was assessed by quantitative ultrasound of the heel. SI and OFR were significantly associated with the mean CAL in women. While 1) the SI showed a significant association with the mean CAL and 2) the OFR with the median number of teeth in just the postmenopausal women, the OFR showed a significant association with mean CAL for both pre- and postmenopausal women. In postmenopausal women, a 10-unit increase in the SI was associated with a decrease in the mean CAL of 0.05 mm (95% confidence interval [CI]: –0.10 to 0.00; P = 0.046). Moreover, the adjusted median number of teeth was 21.4 (95% CI: 20.9 to 21.9) among the postmenopausal women with a low OFR, while it was 19.1 (95% CI: 17.8 to 20.3; P = 0.001) among the postmenopausal women with a high OFR. For the premenopausal women with a low OFR, the mean CAL was 1.60 mm (95% CI: 1.53 to 1.66), while for the premenopausal women with a high OFR, it was 2.24 mm (95% CI: 1.78 to 2.69; P = 0.006). Reduced bone stiffness was associated with clinical attachment and tooth loss in women but not in men.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of the present study was to integrate all the eligible studies and investigate whether the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) gene polymorphisms (TGF-β1 T869C and TGF-β1 T29C) are correlated with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) risk. PMOP is a common skeletal disease and several genetic factors play an important role in the development and progression of PMOP. Significant associations between TGF-β1 gene polymorphisms (TGF-β1 T869C and TGF-β1 T29C) and PMOP risk have been reported; however, some of these results are controversial. A systematic online search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to identify case-control studies investigating the relationship between TGF-β1 T869C and TGF-β1 T29C polymorphisms and the susceptibility of PMOP. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated to assess the associations, and subgroup meta-analyses were performed according to the ethnicity of the study populations. Eight studies involving 1851 cases and 2247 controls met the inclusion criteria after assessment by 2 reviewers. Overall, there were significant associations between TGF-β1 T869C and TGF-β1 T29C polymorphisms and PMOP (TGF-β1 T869C—C vs T: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02-1.36, P = 0.030; CC vs TT: OR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.01-1.88, P = 0.042; CC vs CT/TT OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.09-1.76, P = 0.008; TGF-β1 T29C—CT vs TT: OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.02-1.53, P = 0.032; CT/CC vs TT: OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.02-1.84, P = 0.035). In the subgroup analysis of ethnicity, significant association was observed between TGF-β1 T869C polymorphism and PMOP risk in Asian population (C vs T: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01-1.38, P = 0.043; CC vs TT: OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.01-1.97, P = 0.047; CT/CC vs TT: OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.03-1.66, P = 0.026; CC vs CT/TT OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.03-1.75, P = 0.028); however, there was no significant association between TGF-β1 T869C polymorphism and PMOP risk in Caucasian population. With regard to TGF-β1 T29C polymorphism, significant association was also observed in Asian population (CT vs TT: OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.07-1.75, P = 0.013; CT/CC vs TT: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.16-2.05, P = 0.003), while there was no significant association in Caucasian population. The TGF-β1 T869C and TGF-β1 T29C polymorphisms may be involved in susceptibility to PMOP, particular in Asian patients.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, which is more prevalent in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis likely develops beginning with genetic risk. This study explored the relationships between polymorphisms of HLA-B gene and postmenopausal osteoporosis in a Chinese Han population. Polymerase chain reaction sequence-based typing (PCR-SBT) method was used for DNA typing at HLA-B locus in 70 patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and 73 healthy controls in female Han population of Shaanxi Province, situated in north-western China. We found that 40 HLA-B alleles in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients and control subjects, respectively. Furthermore, the frequency of HLA-B* 3501 allele was significantly higher in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients than in the control group (P = 0.033), and the relative risk was 7.632 (95% CI: 0.927-62.850). Our results suggest that HLA-B* 3501 was likely an important risk factor for postmenopausal osteoporosis. As different populations have different HLA polymorphisms, further investigation of the relationship of various HLA genes and osteoporosis with larger sample size is still necessary in the future.
