Abstract
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging has evolved to become an indispensable tool in human cardiology. It is a non-invasive technique that enables objective assessment of myocardial function, size, and tissue composition. Recent innovations in magnetic resonance imaging scanner technology and parallel imaging techniques have facilitated the generation of parametric mapping to explore tissue characteristics, and the emergence of strain imaging has enabled cardiologists to evaluate cardiac function beyond conventional metrics. As veterinary cardiology continues to utilize CMR beyond the reference standard, clinical application of CMR will further expand our capabilities. This article describes the current use of CMR and adoption of more recent advances such as T1/T2 mapping in veterinary cardiology.

Abstract
AIMS Chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) exposure due to shift work occurs mainly in 4 × 4 or 7 × 7 days shifts in mining, astronomy, and customs activities, among other institutions. However, the long-lasting effects of CIHH on cardiovascular structure and function are not well characterized. We aimed to investigate the effects of CIHH on the cardiac and vascular response of adult rats simulating high-altitude (4600 m) x low-altitude (760 m) working shifts. MAIN METHODS We analyzed in vivo cardiac function through echocardiography, ex vivo vascular reactivity by wire myography, and in vitro cardiac morphology by histology and protein expression and immunolocalization by molecular biology and immunohistochemistry techniques in 12 rats, 6 exposed to CIHH in the hypoxic chamber, and respective normobaric normoxic controls (n = 6). KEY FINDINGS CIHH induced cardiac dysfunction with left and right ventricle remodeling, associated with an increased collagen content in the right ventricle. In addition, CIHH increased HIF-1α levels in both ventricles. These changes are associated with decreased antioxidant capacity in cardiac tissue. Conversely, CIHH decreased contractile capacity with a marked decreased in nitric oxide-dependent vasodilation in both, carotid and femoral arteries. SIGNIFICANCE These data suggest that CIHH induces cardiac and vascular dysfunction by ventricular remodeling and impaired vascular vasodilator function. Our findings highlight the impact of CIHH in cardiovascular function and the importance of a periodic cardiovascular evaluation in high-altitude workers.

Abstract
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most frequent hereditary cardiovascular disease and the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young individuals. Advancements in CMR imaging have allowed for earlier identification and more accurate prognosis of HCM. Interventions aimed at slowing or stopping the disease’s natural course may be developed in the future. CMR has been validated as a technique with high sensitivity and specificity, very few contraindications, a low risk of side effects, and is overall a good tool to be employed in the management of HCM patients. The goal of this review is to evaluate the magnetic resonance features of HCM, starting with distinct phenotypic variants of the disease and progressing to differential diagnoses of athlete’s heart, hypertension, and infiltrative cardiomyopathies. HCM in children has its own section in this review, with possible risk factors that are distinct from those in adults; delayed enhancement in children may play a role in risk stratification in HCM. Finally, a number of teaching points for general cardiologists who recommend CMR for patients with HCM will be presented.

Abstract
Background The effects of focal hypertrophy on geometry of the left ventricle and systolic function have not been studied in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), despite the fact that the former is the most prominent disease characteristic. The aim of our study was to analyze systolic function over ventricle geometry, generating a functional index made from left ventricle end diastolic dimension (LVEDD) divided by end diastolic thickness of the region with maximal extent of hypertrophy and interventricular septum. Material/Methods Our hospital database of cardiac magnetic resonance was screened for HCM. Geometric functional index (GFI) was calculated for LVEDD over maximal end diastolic thickness (MaxEDT) giving GFI-M, while LVEDD over interventricular septum was expressed as GFI-I. There were 55 consecutive patients with HCM. Results There were 43 males (78.2%) and 12 females (21.8%). The mean age was 52.3±16.7 years (range: 15.5–76.4 years). A significant difference of GFI was found for preserved versus impaired systolic function of the left ventricle (preserved systolic function); GFI-M 2.28±0.60 versus 3.66±0.50 (p<0.001), and GFI-I 2.75±0.88 versus 3.81±0.87 (p<0.001), respectively. Diagnostic value was tested using receiver operating curve (ROC) analyzes, with GFI-M area under curve (AUC)=0.959 (95% CI: 0.868–0.994); (p<0.001) and GFI-I-AUC=0.847 (0.724–0.930); (p<0.001). GFI-M was superior to GFI-I for appraisal of left ventricle systolic dysfunction in HCM; ΔAUC=0.112 (0.018–0.207); (p=0.020). Conclusions GFI is a simple tool, with high sensitivity and specificity for detecting impairment of systolic function in patients with HCM. Further studies would be necessary to investigate its clinical and prognostic impacts, as well as reproducibility with prospective validation.

Abstract
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an increasingly recognized clinical disease that carries perioperative risk. Patients may or may not carry a preoperative diagnosis, but provocable left ventricular outflow tract gradients place them at risk for hemodynamic compromise under surgical conditions. Early recognition of obstructive patterns and rapid management alterations in the face of instability are imperative for the treatment of these patients. This review focuses on the diagnostic criteria, risk factors, and management strategies for the perioperative hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patient. Finally, novel diagnostic modalities are discussed.
