Stimulus effects of extremely low-frequency electric field exposure on calcium oscillations in a human cortical spheroid

High-intensity, low-frequency (1 Hz to 100 kHz) electric and magnetic fields (EF and MF) cause electrical excitation of the nervous system via an induced EF (iEF) in living tissue. However, the biological properties and thresholds of stimulus effects on synchronized activity in a three-dimensional (3D) neuronal network remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluated changes in neuronal network activity during extremely low-frequency EF (ELF-EF) exposure by measuring intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) oscillations, which reflect neuronal network activity. For ELF-EF exposure experiments, we used a human cortical spheroid (hCS), a 3D-cultured neuronal network generated from human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cortical neurons. A 50 Hz sinusoidal ELF-EF exposure modulated [Ca2+]i oscillations with dependencies on exposure intensity and duration. Based on the experimental setup and results, the iEF distribution inside the hCS was estimated using high-resolution numerical dosimetry. The numerical estimation revealed threshold values ranging between 255-510 V/m (peak) and 131-261 V/m (average). This indicates that thresholds of neuronal excitation in the hCS were equivalent to those of a thin nerve fiber.

Computational analysis of electromagnetic field exposure in passengers near high- current contact wire environments

The electromagnetic environment of a railway station is composed of electrical, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields, which are generated by various sources such as traction current, voltage, pantograph-catenary arc, locomotive braking, wheel-rail rolling arc, and communication systems. However, there is public growing concern among the public about the potential negative human health effects of this electromagnetic environment. To analyze the distribution of electromagnetic fields in human tissues, electromagnetic simulation software is used to create a model that includes six track contact wires and four waiting passengers on three platforms. This model is used to analyze the magnetic field environment created by high currents in the contact wires of a multi-track high-speed railway station. By varying the loads on different contact wires, the distribution of electric field and magnetic flux density within human tissues of waiting passengers on different platforms is studied using this model. When the track is unoccupied, the calculation results show that the maximum values of the electric field and magnetic flux density of the passenger's human body tissue at the blind way on the platform and 1 m of the blind way are 17.6 mV m-1 and 52.7 μT, respectively. These values increase by 9.28 mV m-1 and 16.4 μT compared to when the track is occupied. When more contact wires are loaded with currents, the electric field mode and magnetic flux density mode of human tissues increase at the same position on the platform. Specifically, when the contact wires of six tracks are loaded with current at the same time, the maximum values of the electric field mode and magnetic flux density mode of the waiting passengers' human tissues at the blind way on different platforms are 29.6 mV m-1 and 88.1 μT, respectively. These maximum values are lower than the public electromagnetic exposure limits that are designated by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines. The research results demonstrate that the magnetic field environment generated by the current in the contact wires of a railway station with six tracks does not pose a health risk to human tissues of passengers waiting at the blind way and 1 m of the blind way on the platform. These findings can provide valuable data reference for the formulation of relevant standards for the design of electrified rail transit, as well as the suppression of electromagnetic interference and protection of human bioelectromagnetism.

Orthopedic implants affect the electric field induced by switching gradients in MRI

PURPOSE

To investigate whether the risk of peripheral nerve stimulation increases in the presence of bulky metallic prostheses implanted in a patient's body.

METHODS

A computational tool was used to calculate the electric field (E-field) induced in a realistic human model due to the action of gradient fields. The calculations were performed both on the original version of the anatomical model and on a version modified through "virtual surgery" to incorporate knee, hip, and shoulder prostheses. Five exam positions within a body gradient coil and one position using a head gradient coil were simulated, subjecting the human model to the readout gradient from an EPI sequence. The induced E-field in models with and without prostheses was compared, focusing on the nerves and all other tissues (both including and excluding the bones from the analysis).

RESULTS

In the nerves, the most pronounced increase in the E-field (+24%) was observed around the knee implant during an abdominal MRI (Y axis readout). When extending the analysis to encompass all tissues (excluding bones), the greatest amplification (+360%) occurred around the knee implant during pelvic MRI (Z axis readout). Notable increases in E-field peaks were also identified around the shoulder and hip implants in multiple scenarios.

CONCLUSION

Based on the presented results, further investigations aimed at quantifying the threshold of nerve stimulation in the presence of bulky implants are desirable.

Wireless power transfer system for capsule robot designed by radial square transmitting coil pair with novel ferrite structure

BACKGROUND

Wireless power transmission for capsule robots has always posed challenges due to the unpredictable postures.

METHODS

A radial transmitting coil with a novel ferrite structure is proposed, which consists of two parts with the function of converging magnetic induction lines and reducing magnetic leakage. To improve the flux density, uniformity, and shielding effectiveness, the design parameters are discussed and optimized on the basis of analytical calculations and simulation analysis.

RESULTS

The proposed ferrite structure improves the power transfer efficiency from 2.78% to 5.21%. Additionally, the power transfer stability showed a slight improvement from 76.4% to 77.6%, while magnetic leakage was reduced by 84%. Finally, the human tissue safety is also discussed and verified.

CONCLUSIONS

The wireless power transfer system is shown to be feasible and safe.

Tensor-conductance model for reducing the computational artifact in target tissue for low-frequency dosimetry

Objective.In protecting human from low-frequency (<100 kHz) exposure, an induced electric field strength is used as a physical quantity for assessment. However, the computational assessment suffers from a staircasing error because of the approximation of curved boundary discretized with cubic voxels. The international guidelines consider an additional reduction factor of 3 when setting the limit of external field strength computed from the permissible induced electric field. Here, a new method was proposed to reduce the staircasing error considering the tensor conductance in human modeling for low-frequency dosimetry.Approach.We proposed a tensor-based conductance model, which was developed on the basis of the filling ratio and the direction of the tissue interface to satisfy the electric field boundary condition and reduce staircasing errors in the target tissue of a voxel human model.Main results.The proposed model was validated using two-layer nonconcentric cylindrical and spherical models with different conductivity contrasts. A comparison of induced electric field strengths with solutions obtained using an analytical formula and finite element method simulation indicated that for a wide range of conductivity ratios, staircasing errors were reduced compared with a conventional scalar-potential finite-difference method. The induced electric field in a simple anatomical head model using our approach was in good agreement with finite element method for exposure to uniform magnetic field exposure and that from coil, simulating transcranial magnetic stimulation.Significance.The proposed tensor-conductance model demonstrated that the staircasing error in an inner target tissue of a voxel human body can be reduced. This finding can be used for the electromagnetic compliance assessment and dose evaluation in electric or magnetic stimulation at low frequencies.

Characteristics of current perception produced by intermediate-frequency contact currents in healthy adults

Introduction

Contact electrical currents in humans stimulate peripheral nerves at frequencies of <100 kHz, producing sensations such as tingling. At frequencies above 100 kHz, heating becomes dominant, resulting in a sensation of warmth. When the current amplitude exceeds the threshold, the sensation results in discomfort or pain. In international guidelines and standards for human protection from electromagnetic fields, the limit for the contact current amplitude has been prescribed. Although the types of sensations produced by contact current at low frequencies, i.e., approximately 50-60 Hz, and the corresponding perception thresholds have been investigated, there is a lack of knowledge about those in the intermediate-frequency band-particularly from 100 kHz to 10 MHz.

Methods

In this study, we investigated the current-perception threshold and types of sensations for 88 healthy adults (range: 20-79 years old) with a fingertip exposed to contact currents at 100 kHz, 300 kHz, 1 MHz, 3 MHz, and 10 MHz.

Results

The current perception thresholds at frequencies ranging from 300 kHz to 10 MHz were 20-30% higher than those at 100 kHz (p < 0.001). In addition, a statistical analysis revealed that the perception thresholds were correlated with the age or finger circumference: older participants and those with larger finger circumferences exhibited higher thresholds. At frequencies of ≥300 kHz, the contact current mainly produced a warmth sensation, which differed from the tingling/pricking sensation produced by the current at 100 kHz.

Discussion

These results indicate that there exists a transition of the produced sensations and their perception threshold between 100 kHz and 300 kHz. The findings of this study are useful for revising the international guidelines and standards for contact currents at intermediate frequencies.

Effects of Artificial Electromagnetic Fields on Bees: A Global Review

&lt;b&gt;Background and Objective:&lt;/b&gt; Electromagnetic fields coming from electric and electronic devices, mobile telephony antennas, or electrical installations are continuously growing and are in direct relation with population growth. In that sense, the purpose of this investigation was to determine what are the effects of artificial electromagnetic fields on the behavior and viability of bees through a global perspective (1968-2022). &lt;b&gt;Materials and Methods:&lt;/b&gt; The methodology used in this research consisted of the review of literature obtained from platforms such as Scopus, EBSCO, IEEE, Wiley, Google Scholar and Taylor & Francis. &lt;b&gt;Results:&lt;/b&gt; It was possible to review 36 studies on the field and to state that investigations on this topic have increased in 2019, at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.86% (in a period of 54 years). Poland and USA are the leading countries in the number and importance of investigations on this topic. Keywords were grouped on the basis of the advancement of the research (honeybee, animals, &lt;i&gt;Apis mellifera&lt;/i&gt; and apoideos). &lt;b&gt;Conclusion:&lt;/b&gt; The study of the effects of electromagnetic fields on bees makes it possible to understand its impact on the metabolism and viability of bees.

Estimation method for the anisotropic electrical conductivity of in vivo human muscles and fat between 10 kHz and 1 MHz

Objective. In low frequency dosimetry the variability in the electrical conductivity values assigned to body model tissues represents a major source of uncertainty. The aim of this study is to propose a method for estimating the conductivity of human anisotropic skeletal muscle and fat in vivo in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. Approach. A method based on bounded electrical impedance tomography was used. Bioimpedance measurements were performed on the legs of ten subjects. Anatomically realistic models of the legs were then created using magnetic resonance images. The inverse problem of the tissue conductivities was solved using the finite element method. The results were validated using resampling techniques. These findings were also used to study the effects of muscle anisotropy on magnetic field exposure. Main results. The estimated conductivities for anisotropic muscle were found to be in good agreement with values found in existing literature and the anisotropy was shown to decrease with increasing frequency, with the ratio of lateral to longitudinal conductivity increasing from 37% to 64%. The conductivity of fat was found to be almost a constant 0.07 S m−1 in the frequency range considered. Significance. The proposed method was shown to be a viable option when estimating in vivo conductivity of human tissue. The results can be used in numerical dosimetry calculations or as limits in future investigations studying conductivity with bioimpedance measurements.

Suppression of Glucocorticoid Response in Stressed Mice Using 50 Hz Electric Field According to Immobilization Degree and Posture

Various studies on immobilized BALB/c mice to evaluate changes in hormone levels associated with stress responses have advanced the characterization of multiple aspects of the biological actions of extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric fields (EFs). In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of mouse posture on its stress responses and evaluate the importance of adjusting the stress degree in the model. Mice were immobilized inside centrifuge tubes and exposed to an ELF EF generated between parallel plate electrodes. Blood was collected under anesthesia immediately after EF exposure, and plasma glucocorticoids were assayed. The inhibitory effects of EFs on glucocorticoid elevation by immobilization were reproduced regardless whether mice were in the abdominal or lateral recumbent position, for the EF vector delivered to mice through the sagittal or frontal plane. The effect of ELF EF was reproduced in moderately and mildly stressed mice but not in severely immobilized mice. Hence, adjusting the stress degree is critical to the reproducibility of the results for this model. We characterized the effects of ELF EF on homeostasis, including the stress response, and provided valuable information for the scientific evaluation of the biological risks and medical applications of ELF EF.

Measurement and image-based estimation of dielectric properties of biological tissues —past, present, and future—

The dielectric properties of biological tissues are fundamental pararmeters that are essential for electromagnetic modeling of the human body. The primary database of dielectric properties compiled in 1996 on the basis of dielectric measurements at frequencies from 10 Hz to 20 GHz has attracted considerable attention in the research field of human protection from non-ionizing radiation. This review summarizes findings on the dielectric properties of biological tissues at frequencies up to 1 THz since the database was developed. Although the 1996 database covered general (normal) tissues, this review also covers malignant tissues that are of interest in the research field of medical applications. An intercomparison of dielectric properties based on reported data is presented for several tissue types. Dielectric properties derived from image-based estimation techniques developed as a result of recent advances in dielectric measurement are also included. Finally, research essential for future advances in human body modeling is discussed.

Vestibular Extremely Low-Frequency Magnetic and Electric Stimulation Effects on Human Subjective Visual Vertical Perception

Electric fields from both extremely low‐frequency magnetic fields (ELF‐MF) and alternating current (AC) stimulations impact human neurophysiology. As the retinal photoreceptors, vestibular hair cells are graded potential cells and are sensitive to electric fields. Electrophosphene and magnetophosphene literature suggests different impacts of AC and ELF‐MF on the vestibular hair cells. Furthermore, while AC modulates the vestibular system more globally, lateral ELF‐MF stimulations could be more utricular specific. Therefore, to further address the impact of ELF‐MF‐induced electric fields on the human vestibular system and the potential differences with AC stimulations, we investigated the effects of both stimulation modalities on the perception of verticality using a subjective visual vertical (SVV) paradigm. For similar levels of SVV precision, the ELF‐MF condition required more time to adjust SVV, and SVV variability was higher with ELF‐MF than with AC vestibular‐specific stimulations. Yet, the differences between AC and ELF‐MF stimulations were small. Overall, this study highlights small differences between AC and ELF‐MF vestibular stimulations, underlines a potential utricular contribution, and has implications for international exposure guidelines and standards. © 2022 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Evaluation of the Effects of Exposure to Power-Frequency Magnetic Fields on the Differentiation of Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells Using Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

The causal association between exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields (MFs) and childhood leukemia has been under discussion. Although evidence from experimental studies is required for a conclusion to be reached, only a few studies have focused on the effects of MF exposure on the human hematopoietic system directly related to leukemogenesis. Here, we established an in vitro protocol to simulate the differentiation of human mesodermal cells to hematopoietic stem progenitor cells (HSPCs) using human-induced pluripotent stem cells. Furthermore, we introduced MF in the protocol to study the effects of exposure. After a continuous exposure to 0-300 mT of 50-Hz MFs during the differentiation process, the efficiency of differentiation of mesodermal cells into HSPCs was analyzed in a single-blinded manner. The percentage of emerged HSPCs from mesodermal cells in groups exposed to 50-Hz MFs indicated a lack of significant changes compared with those in the sham-exposed group. These results suggest that exposure to 50-Hz MFs up to 300 mT does not affect the differentiation of human mesodermal cells to HSPCs, which may be involved in the initial process of leukemogenesis. © 2022 The Authors. Stress-Reducing Effect of a 50 Hz Electric Field in Mice after Repeated Immobilizations, Electric Field Shields, and Polarization of the Electrodes

Simple Summary

With the increasing demand for electricity and electrical equipment, humans are routinely and unintentionally exposed to electric fields (EFs). Although no considerable adverse effects of EF exposure have been observed, slight physiological effects are known to occur. Additionally, there are methods and devices that expose subjects to EF for medical purposes. The mechanism of the biological effects of EF has not been identified, because the effects are not strong and may involve the physical properties of EFs, which are invisible and easily disturbed by obstacles. In a simple and short experiment using mice, we found that EF has an inhibitory effect on glucocorticoid (GC) responses. The experiment’s reproducibility was almost 100%. We tried to improve the understanding of the biological effects of EF by structuring our observations of the stress-reducing effects under different conditions in the system. We found that the inhibitory effect on the GC response was attenuated by EF shielding. We compared the effects of EF shielding between the head and abdomen, and found that the effects of EF were attenuated in both conditions, but might be more attenuated when the head was shielded. Thus, it appears that the area where the EF is distributed and the body part are important for the biological effects of EF. Two experiments with different conditions were performed. These results will help advance the current understanding of the effects of EF on stress systems.

Abstract

In BALB/c mice, immobilization-increased plasma glucocorticoid (GC) levels are suppressed by extremely low frequency (ELF) electric fields (EF). The aim of this study was to advance our understanding of the biological effects of ELF-EF, using its suppressive effect on the GC response. Mice were exposed to a 50 Hz EF of 10 kV/m via a parallel plate electrode and immobilized as needed. We examined the suppressive effect of ELF-EF on GC level change after repeated immobilizations, electrode polarization, and EF shielding of different portions of the mouse body parts. Additionally, bodyweight changes owing to stress and EF were examined. Immobilization-induced reduction in the plasma GC levels was reproduced in mice with stress and EF exposure, regardless of the stress episode numbers and electrode polarization. Furthermore, when the head of mice was shielded from the EF, the suppressive effect was possibly relatively lower than that when the abdomen was shielded. The bodyweight of the mice decreased for 3 days after immobilization before recovering; ELF-EF did not affect the bodyweight. Thus, to elicit the biological effects of the EF, not only the size of the area where the EF is distributed but also the area where the field is distributed should be important. The results also confirmed the stableness of the present experimental system, at least in terms of the stress-reducing effect. In addition, the restriction in this study caused weight loss, but ELF-EF was not considered to affect it. The results improve the understanding of the biological effect and medical applications of ELF-EF.

A fast tool for the parametric analysis of human body exposed to LF electromagnetic fields in biomedical applications

A numerical procedure for analyzing electromagnetic (EM) fields interactions with biological tissues is presented. The proposed approach aims at drastically reducing the computational burden required by the repeated solution of large scale problems involving the interaction of the human body with EM fields, such as in the study of the time evolution of EM fields, uncertainty quantification, and inverse problems. The proposed volume integral equation (VIE), focused on low frequency applications, is a system of integral equations in terms of current density and scalar potential in the biological tissues excited by EM fields and/or electrodes connected to the human body. The proposed formulation requires the voxelization of the human body and takes advantage of the regularity of such discretization by speeding-up the computational procedure. Moreover, it exploits recent advancements in the solution of VIE by means of iterative preconditioned solvers and ad hoc parametric Model Order Reduction techniques. The efficiency of the proposed tool is demonstrated by applying it to a couple of realistic model problems: the assessment of the peripheral nerve stimulation, performed in terms of evaluation of the induced electric field, due to the gradient coils of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner during a clinical examination and the assessment of the exposure to environmental fields at 50 Hz of live-line workers with uncertain properties of the biological tissues. Thanks to the proposed method, uncertainty quantification analyses and time domain simulations are possible even for large scale problems and they can be performed on standard computers and reasonable computation time. Evaluation of Peripheral Electrostimulation Thresholds in Human Model for Uniform Magnetic Field Exposure

The external field strength according to the international guidelines and standards for human protection are derived to prevent peripheral nerve system pain at frequencies from 300-750 Hz to 1 MHz. In this frequency range, the stimulation is attributable to axon electrostimulation. One limitation in the current international guidelines is the lack of respective stimulation thresholds in the brain and peripheral nervous system from in vivo human measurements over a wide frequency range. This study investigates peripheral stimulation thresholds using a multi-scale computation based on a human anatomical model for uniform exposure. The nerve parameters are first adjusted from the measured data to fit the peripheral nerve in the trunk. From the parameters, the external magnetic field strength to stimulate the nerve was estimated. Here, the conservativeness of protection limits of the international guidelines and standards for peripheral stimulation was confirmed. The results showed a margin factor of 4-6 and 10-24 times between internal and external protection limits of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard (IEEE C95.1) and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines, with the computed pain thresholds.

Magneto- and electrophosphene thresholds in the retina: a dosimetry modeling study

Objective:Sensations of flickering light produced by time-varying magnetic fields or electric currents are called magneto- or electrophosphenes. Phosphene thresholds have been used in international guidelines and standards as an estimate of the thresholds of exposure that produce effects in the central nervous system. However, the estimated threshold values have a large range of uncertainty.Approach:Phosphene thresholds were approximated by simulating five phosphene threshold experiments. Retinal electric fields and currents induced by electric and magnetic stimulation were calculated using the finite element method and 14 anatomically realistic computational models of human heads.Main results:The radial component of retinal current density was determined to be in the range of 6.0~--~20.6~mA/m$^2$. This study produces more accurate estimates for threshold current density in the retina using detailed anatomical models and the estimates had a reduced range of uncertainty compared to earlier studies.Significance:The results are useful for studying the mechanisms of retinal phosphenes and for the development of exposure limits for the central nervous system.

Efficiency of the Wireless Power Transfer System with Planar Coils in the Periodic and Aperiodic Systems

This article presents the results of the proposed numerical and analytical analysis of the Wireless Power Transfer System (WPT). The system consists of a transmitting surface and a receiving surface, where each of them is composed of planar spiral coils. Two WPT systems were analysed (periodic and aperiodic) considering two types of coils (circular and square). In the aperiodic system, the adjacent coils were wound in the opposite direction. The influence of the type of coils, the winding direction, the number of turns, and the distance between the coils on the efficiency of the WPT system was compared. In periodic models, higher efficiency was obtained with circular rather than square coils. The results obtained with both proposed methods were consistent, which confirmed the correctness of the adopted assumptions. In aperiodic models, for a smaller radius of the coil, the efficiency of the system was higher in the square coil models than in the circular coil models. On the other hand, with a larger radius of the coil, the efficiency of the system was comparable regardless of the coil type. When comparing both systems (periodic and aperiodic), for both circular and square coils, aperiodic models show higher efficiency values (the difference is even 57%). The proposed system can be used for simultaneous charging of many sensors (located in, e.g., walls, floors).

Human Psychophysiology Is Influenced by Low-Level Magnetic Fields: Solar Activity as the Cause

We evaluate the impact of changes in solar activity on three significant human psychophysiological parameters: skin conductance, electromyography (EMG), and the share of abdominal and diaphragmatic breathing in overall ventilation. Variations affecting human psychophysiology due to changes in solar activity directly document the assertion that psychology, behavior, and decision-making all reflect geomagnetic field alterations that stem from variable solar activity. The relevant experiments showed that solar processes, during which the Earth is exposed to electrically charged particles from the Sun (solar wind), exert an impact on the psychophysiological parameters of the body.

The Role of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields on the Radical Pair Mechanism

In recent decades, the use of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in therapeutics has been one of the main fields of activity in the bioelectromagnetics arena. Nevertheless, progress in this area has been hindered by the lack of consensus on a biophysical mechanism of interaction that can satisfactorily explain how low-level, non-thermal electromagnetic fields would be able to sufficiently affect chemistry as to elicit biological effects in living organisms. This specifically applies in cases where the induced electric fields are too small to generate a biological response of any consequence. A growing body of experimental observations that would explain the nature of these effects speaks strongly about the involvement of a theory known as the radical pair mechanism (RPM). This mechanism explains how a pair of reactive oxygen species with distinct chemical fate can be influenced by a low-level external magnetic field through Zeeman and hyperfine interactions. So far, a study of the effects of complex spatiotemporal signals within the context of the RPM has not been performed. Here, we present a computational investigation of such effects by utilizing a generic PEMF test signal and RPM models of different complexity. Surprisingly, our results show how substantially different chemical results can be obtained within ranges that depend on the specific orientation of the PEMF test signal with respect to the background static magnetic field, its waveform, and both of their amplitudes. These results provide a basis for explaining the distinctive biological relevance of PEMF signals on radical pair chemical reactions. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Dosimetry analysis of the magnetic field of underground power cables and magnetic field mitigation using an electromagnetic shielding technique

Non-ionizing dosimetry investigations of extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields that are generated by underground power cables as well as the minimization of their health effects are significant topics handled by numerous researchers. In this study, ELF magnetic fields and current densities caused by three-phased underground transmission lines induced in the human model were examined utilizing both analytical and numerical methods. Analyses were carried out using a two-dimensional problem scenario for the comprehensive head and body model. The results of the finite element method (FEM)-based simulation studies and the analytical calculations are consistent with each other. Moreover, a magnetic field shielding method utilizing conductive material was presented in the study. The shielding technique performed with copper material was carried out to mitigate the magnetic field and possible dosimetry hazards in the ELF region. The proposed shield was a 4-mm reverse U-shaped copper material.

Influence of segmentation accuracy in structural MR head scans on electric field computation for TMS and tES

In several diagnosis and therapy procedures based on electrostimulation effect, the internal physical quantity related to the stimulation is the induced electric field. To estimate the induced electric field in an individual human model, the segmentation of anatomical imaging, such as magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans, of the corresponding body parts into tissues is required. Then, electrical properties associated with different annotated tissues are assigned to the digital model to generate a volume conductor. However, the segmentation of different tissues is a tedious task with several associated challenges specially with tissues appear in limited regions and/or low-contrast in anatomical images. An open question is how segmentation accuracy of different tissues would influence the distribution of the induced electric field. In this study, we applied parametric segmentation of different tissues to exploit the segmentation of available MRI to generate different quality of head models using deep learning neural network architecture, named ForkNet. Then, the induced electric field are compared to assess the effect of model segmentation variations. Computational results indicate that the influence of segmentation error is tissue-dependent. In brain, sensitivity to segmentation accuracy is relatively high in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), moderate in gray matter (GM) and low in white matter for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). A CSF segmentation accuracy reduction of 10% in terms of Dice coefficient (DC) lead to decrease up to 4% in normalized induced electric field in both applications. However, a GM segmentation accuracy reduction of 5.6% DC leads to increase of normalized induced electric field up to 6%. Opposite trend of electric field variation was found between CSF and GM for both TMS and tES. The finding obtained here would be useful to quantify potential uncertainty of computational results.

Retinal and Cortical Contributions to Phosphenes During Transcranial Electrical Current Stimulation

It is generally believed that the phosphenes induced by transcranial electric current stimulation (tECS) are a product of retinal activation, even when electrode placement is directly over the primary visual cortex. However, the origins of these tECS-induced phosphenes have not yet been conclusively determined. In this study, phosphene detection thresholds using an FPz-Oz montage were compared with those from (i) an Oz-Cz montage to determine whether prefrontal regions, such as the retina, contribute to phosphenes and (ii) an FPz-Cz montage to determine whether the visual cortex in the occipital lobe contributes to phosphenes. Twenty-two participants received transcranial current stimulation with each of these montages (as well as a T3-T4 montage included for exploratory purposes) at 6, 10, 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32 Hz. To estimate differences in current density at the retina and occipital lobe across montages, modeling of current density at phosphene thresholds was measured across 20 head models. Consistent with the proposal that tECS-induced phosphenes are generated in the retina, increasing current density near the retina (FPz-Oz relative to Oz-Cz montage) reduced phosphene thresholds. However, increasing current density near the occipital cortex (FPz-Oz relative to FPz-Cz montage) also reduced phosphene thresholds while also requiring less current density at the retina according to the modeling estimates. This suggests that tECS of this occipital cortex also contributed to phosphene perception. © 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Inter-individual variations in electric fields induced in the brain by exposure to uniform magnetic fields at 50 Hz

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard establish safety limits for human exposure to electromagnetic fields. At low frequencies, only a limited number of computational body models or simplified geometrical shapes are used to relate the internal induced electric fields and the external magnetic fields. As a consequence, both standard/guidelines derive the exposure reference levels for the external magnetic field without considering the variability between individuals. Here we provide quantitative data on the variation of the maximum electric field strengths induced in the brain of 118 individuals when exposed to uniform magnetic fields at 50 Hz. We found that individual characteristics, such as age and skull volume, as well as incident magnetic field direction, have a systematic effect on the peak electric field values. Older individuals show higher induced electric field strengths, possibly due to age-related anatomical changes in brain. Peak electric field strengths are found to increase for larger skull volumes, as well as for incident magnetic fields directed along the lateral direction. Moreover, the maximum electric fields provided by the anatomical models used by ICNIRP for deriving exposure limits are considerably higher than those obtained here. On the contrary, the IEEE elliptical exposure model produces a weaker peak electric field strength. Our findings are useful for the revision and harmonization of the current exposure standard and guidelines. The present investigation reduces the dosimetric uncertainty of the induced electric field among different anatomical induction models. The obtained results can be used as a basis for the selection of appropriate reduction factors when deriving exposure reference levels for human protection to low-frequency electromagnetic exposure.

An Adaptive Current Limiting Controller for a Wireless Power Transmission System Energized by a PV Generator

The use of a wireless power transmission system (WPTS) in modern applications, such as consumer electronics, renewable energy sources (RESs) and electric vehicles (EVs), can significantly increase the safety and convenience of the power supply. However, low efficiency is a major hurdle to the use of a WPTS in these applications. In this article, an adaptive virtual impedance controller (AVIC) is presented to enhance the wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency of a photovoltaic generator (PVG) to the load. In the proposed controller, a unique method is employed to adaptively estimate the coefficient of coupling and resonant frequency of the WPTS coils as a function of the distance between the coils. Moreover, a modified incremental conductance (IC) based maximum power tracking (MIC-MPPT) technique is presented to operate the PVG at MPPT mode. The proposed MIC-MPPT is tested via a hardware prototype and the controller validation is carried out in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment under various uncertainties, such as intermittent irradiance, variable load, and the distance between transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) coils. Finally, a comparative analysis between the proposed controller and the conventional non-adaptive and adaptive resonant frequency controller is presented which confirms the superiority of the proposed controller.

Estimation of short-circuit current induced by ELF uniform electric fields in grounded humans with different body shapes based on a semi-ellipsoidal model

It has been reported that when a grounded human is exposed to an electric field at power frequency, a short-circuit current flowing from the feet to the ground is proportional to the square of his or her height. The current, however, should also vary with the body surface area, that is, body shape, even in people with the same height. In the present study, we confirmed this hypothesis using an analytical solution derived from a semi-ellipsoidal model. The short-circuit currents were calculated for various numerical human body models in which the horizontal length of a voxel was varied from 1.8 to 3.0 mm, and the results for different body shapes were compared. Finally, we derived an approximate expression for estimating the short-circuit current from the left-right width (2b), frontal thickness (2c), and height (a) of a human from the analytical solution. The short-circuit currents obtained from the approximate expression are consistent with those obtained from numerical calculations for 48 differently shaped human body models with a correlation coefficient of 0.9942. Hence, we concluded that the short-circuit current can be determined depending on the similarity ratio (a/b) and the ellipticity ratio (c/b) of the human body as well as the height. This finding is consistent with the numerical human body models that have been used previously, in which the similarity and ellipticity ratios were very close. Therefore, we can make the limited conclusion that the short-circuit current is proportional only to the square of the height. Additionally, numerical calculations showed that the short-circuit current is the same whether one foot or both feet are grounded.

Effect of Loudspeakers on the In Situ Electric Field in a Driver Body Model Exposed to an Electric Vehicle Wireless Power Transfer System

This study computationally evaluates the effect of loudspeakers on the in situ electric field in a driver body model exposed to the magnetic field from a wireless power transfer (WPT) system in an electric vehicle (EV), one with a body made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the other made with aluminum. A quasi-static two-step approach was applied to compute the in situ electric field. The computational results showed that the magnetic field distribution generated by the WPT is significantly altered around the loudspeakers, and shows obvious discontinuity and local enhancement. The maximum spatial-average magnetic field strength in the driver’s body was increased by 11% in the CFRP vehicle. It was 2.25 times larger than the reference levels (RL) prescribed in the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines in 2010. In addition, we found that the in situ electric field computed by the line- and volume-averaging methods were stable if the top 0.1% voxels are excluded. The maximum value was well below the basic restriction (BR) of the ICNIRP guidelines. Nevertheless, the presence of the loudspeaker led to increments in the electric field strength in parts of the human body, suggesting the potential influence of permissible transmitting power in the WPT system. The maximum electric field strength in the thigh and buttock with the woofer, increased by 27% in the CFRP vehicle. The arm value was up to 3 times higher than that obtained without the tweeter in the aluminum vehicle. Moreover, this study found that the maximum electric field strength depended on the location of the loudspeaker with respect to the WPT system and the separation from the driver model. Therefore, the loudspeaker should be considered when evaluating the maximum in situ electric field strength in the vehicle body design stage.
