Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the characteristics and prognoses of idiopathic macular epiretinal membrane (iERM) using a classification based on the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area. METHOD IERMs were classified into four stages based on the FAZ area. Baseline FAZ-related parameters, pre-and postoperative central macular thickness (CMT), and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were observed and compared between different stages. The correlations of structural parameters with pre-and postoperative logMAR BCVA were analyzed. RESULTS 162 iERM eyes were enrolled, including 105 eyes followed up for 12 months after surgery. The preoperative BCVA was better at the early stage. Postoperative BCVA at Stages 2 and 3 were better compared to Stage 4. The early stage was associated with thinner CMT pre-and postoperatively. However, there was no significant difference in CMT between postoperative Stages 1 and 2 or Stages 3 and 4. Preoperative logMAR BCVA was negatively correlated with FAZ area, perimeter, and FD-300 and was positively correlated with CMT and acircularity index (AI). CMT correlated positively with BCVA for each stage, except Stage 4; FAZ area, perimeter, and FD-300 had a negative correlation at Stage 1. Baseline BCVA and CMT positively correlated with BCVA at the last follow-up, while FAZ area and FD-300 were negatively correlated. Baseline BCVA had a positive correlation for each stage, except Stage 1; FD-300 had a negative correlation at Stages 2 and 3; CMT had a positive correlation at Stage 3. CONCLUSION A classification based on the FAZ area was established innovatively. This classification can reflect the progression of iERM and is helpful to the postoperative prognosis.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to review the literature on the application of ImageJ in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) images. Methods A general search was performed in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. The authors evaluated each of the selected articles in order to assess the implementation of ImageJ in OCT-A images. Results ImageJ can aid in reducing artifacts, enhancing image quality to increase the accuracy of the process and analysis, processing and analyzing images, generating comparable parameters such as the parameters that assess perfusion of the layers (vessel density (VD), skeletonized density (SD), and vessel length density (VLD)) and the parameters that evaluate the structure of the layers (fractal dimension (FD), vessel density index (VDI), and lacunarity (LAC)), and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) that are used widely in the retinal and choroidal studies), and establishing diagnostic criteria. It can help to save time when the dataset is huge with numerous plugins and options for image processing and analysis with reliable results. Diverse studies implemented distinct binarization and thresholding techniques, resulting in disparate outcomes and incomparable parameters. Uniformity in methodology is required to acquire comparable data from studies employing diverse processing and analysis techniques that yield varied outcomes. Conclusion Researchers and professionals might benefit from using ImageJ because of how quickly and correctly it processes and analyzes images. It is highly adaptable and potent software, allowing users to evaluate images in a variety of ways. There exists a diverse range of methodologies for analyzing OCTA images through the utilization of ImageJ. However, it is imperative to establish a standardized strategy to ensure the reliability and consistency of the method for research purposes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To demonstrate the associations between the morphology of macular retinal vasculature and disease severity of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM). METHODS Macular structures were assessed using optical coherence tomography (OCT), and were classified as "with pseudohole" or "without pseudohole". The 3 × 3 mm macular OCT angiography images were analyzed using the Fiji software to obtain the vessel density, skeleton density, average vessel diameter, vessel tortuosity, fractal dimension, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ)-related parameters. The correlations between these parameters and ERM grading as well as visual acuity were analyzed. RESULTS For ERM with or without a pseudohole, increased average vessel diameter, decreased skeleton density, and decreased vessel tortuosity were all associated with inner retinal folding and thickened inner nuclear layer, indicating more severe ERM. In 191 eyes without a pseudohole, the average vessel diameter increased, fractal dimension decreased and vessel tortuosity decreased with increasing ERM severity. The FAZ was not associated with ERM severity. Decreased skeleton density (r = -0.37), vessel tortuosity (r = -0.35), and increased average vessel diameter (r = 0.42) were correlated with worse visual acuity (All P < 0.001). In 58 eyes with pseudoholes, a larger FAZ was associated with a smaller average vessel diameter (r = -0.43, P = 0.015), higher skeleton density (r = 0.49, P < 0.001), and vessel tortuosity (r = 0.32, P = 0.015). However, none of the retinal vasculature parameters correlated with visual acuity and central foveal thickness. CONCLUSION Increased average vessel diameter, decreased skeleton density, decreased fractal dimension and decreased vessel tortuosity were good indicators of ERM severity and associated visual impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore image processing methods for optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) of the epiretinal membrane (ERM), and to evaluate the impact of ERM on vision by analyzing the retinal vasculature. METHODS Thirty eyes of 30 patients with idiopathic ERM who underwent OCTA were retrospectively evaluated. Image processing of OCTA, including the Mexican hat filter (MHF) and exclusion of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ), was attempted using Fiji. OCTA parameters, including vessel density (VD), fractal dimension (FD), and vessel tortuosity (VT), were measured for large vessels only, capillaries only, and the whole vasculature. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlations between best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCTA parameters. RESULTS The correlations between BCVA and retinal vasculature were much increased when the capillaries only instead of the whole vasculature was used for analysis. Both higher VD and FD of capillaries were correlated with better BCVA, and MHF largely increased their correlations (P < 0.0001 for both). In contrast, both higher VD and FD of the large vessels were associated with poorer BCVA (P = 0.042 and 0.049, respectively). A higher VT of capillaries was correlated with better BCVA, and both MHF and exclusion of the FAZ were necessary to reveal their correlations (P = 0.028) CONCLUSIONS: Separation of large vessels and capillaries was necessary to reveal the correlation between retinal vasculature and BCVA in ERM. MHF was necessary to elucidate all microvascular parameters of capillaries, and exclusion of the FAZ was mandatory for evaluation of VT.

Abstract
Purpose: To explore the surgical outcomes of the macular microvasculature and visual function in eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD-OCTA). Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study included 41 participants who underwent iERM surgery with a 3-month (3M) follow-up. Forty-one healthy eyes formed the control group. The assessments included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and mean sensitivity (MS) by microperimetry and SD-OCTA assessment of vessel tortuosity (VT), vessel density (VD), foveal avascular zone, and retinal thickness (RT). Results: The findings showed statistically significant differences in VT, foveal avascular zone parameters, RT, BCVA, and MS between the iERM and control groups (p < 0.05). After iERM surgery, the macular VT, SCP VD, and RT decreased significantly (p < 0.01) while the DCP VD increased (p = 0.029). The BCVA improved significantly (p < 0.001) and was associated with the MS (rs = -0.377, p = 0.015). MS was associated with the SCP VD and RT at 3M (SCP VD rs = 0.511, p = 0.001; RT rs = 0.456, p = 0.003). In the superior quadrant, the MS improved significantly (p < 0.001) and the improvement of MS was associated with the reduction of VT (β = -0.330, p = 0.034). Conclusion: Microcirculatory remodeling and perfusion recovery were observed within 3 months after iERM surgery. VT was a novel index for evaluating the morphology of the retinal microvasculature in eyes with iERM and was associated with MS in the superior quadrant.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of vitrectomy (Vy) with or without same time cataract surgery and membrane plus internal limiting membrane peeling (MP+ILMP) on retinal oxygenation and choroidal volume and their role on postoperative outcome. Methods Thirty‐two eyes were included in this prospective clinical study. All patients received 23 gauge Vy+MP+ILMP without endotamponade. Additional cataract surgery was performed in 14 patients. Follow‐up visits were scheduled at day 1, week 1, month 1 and month 3. At each visit, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using ETDRS charts (except at day 1), oxygenation of retinal vessels using the Oxymap T1, and optical coherence tomography (OCT, Heidelberg Spectralis) was performed. Results Mean BCVA increased significantly from 73 ± 11 letters to 77 ± 7 letters at month 3 (p = 0.02). Mean central retinal thickness (CRT) decreased from 456 ± 84 µm at baseline to 418±58µm (p = 0.01 baseline versus month 3). In the cataract surgery group, CRT was higher at month 3 than in the group without (400 ± 58 µm versus 441 ± 51 µm; p = 0.007). There was no statistically significant difference in choroidal volume or oxygenation of retinal vessels between groups (additional cataract surgery versus vitrectomy alone). Oxygenation of retinal arteries tended to decrease at day 1 followed by an increase, but the changes did not reach the level of significance (p = 0.29 baseline versus month 3). Oxygenation of retinal veins increased significantly (p = 0.02 baseline versus month 1; p = 0.04 baseline versus month 3, accordingly). There was a significant negative correlation (Spearman correlation coefficient rs = −0.35, p = 0.047) between visual acuity and oxygenation of retinal veins at month 3. No statistically significant correlation was found between CRT and oxygenation of neither retinal arteries nor veins. Choroidal volume (CV) of the central mm did not change significantly during the study period (baseline: 0.203 ± 0.04 mm3, median: 0.206, month 3: 0.205 ± 0.04 mm3, p = 0.54). There was no statistically significant effect of choroidal volume at baseline on postoperative clinical outcomes (change in BCVA estimate [95% CI]: 7 [−76; 90], p = 0.86; change in CRT: 147 [−577; 871], p = 0.68). Conclusion Oxygen saturation may affect the visual acuity outcome but not the CRT in patients after vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane. Choroidal thickness had no statistically significant influence on the study outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate if the measurement of retinal oxygenation may be helpful in the decision for surgery.
