Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the clinical course and evaluate treatment of ocular surface changes in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy. METHODS Multiple markers of ocular surface dryness were evaluated in 16 patients on ICI therapy. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to determine the significant change in the initial and final ocular surface indices. RESULTS Fifty percent of the eyes demonstrated worsening Schirmer I scores; 29% showed an increase in lissamine green staining. During follow-up, 43% of patients experienced a decline in OSDI scores. Treatments included preservative-free artificial tears (88%), cyclosporine (25%), topical corticosteroids (31%), warm compresses (25%); punctal plugs (13%). Median follow-up time was 3.4 months (range:0-79 ); median ICI treatment duration was 7 months (range:1-40). Four patients died during the observation period. CONCLUSION A significant proportion of patients experience changes in ocular surface markers while treated with ICIs. Medical intervention can lead to stabilization of ocular surface disease.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a kind of multifactorial ocular surface disease that displays ocular discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability. Oxidative stress is a fundamental pathogenesis in DED. An imbalance between the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and protective enzyme action will lead to oxidative stress, cell dysfunction, tear hyperosmolarity, and inflammation. Herein, a multifunctional cerium oxide nanozyme with high ocular surface retention property was designed to neutralize over-accumulated ROS and restore redox balance. Cerium oxide nanozymes were fabricated via branched polyethylenimine-graft-poly (ethylene glycol) nucleation and dispersion, followed by phenylboronic acid (PBA) functionalization (defined as Ce@PB). Due to the dynamic chemical bonding formation between the PBA segment and the cis-diol groups in the mucin layer of the tear film, Ce@PB nanozymes possess good adhesive capability to the ocular surface, thus extending the drug's retention time. On the other hand, Ce@PB nanozymes could mimic the cascade processes of superoxide dismutase and catalase to maintain intracellular redox balance. In vitro and in vivo studies suggest that such multifunctional nanozymes possess good biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. More importantly, Ce@PB nanozymes treatment in the animal model could repair corneal epithelial defect, increase the number of goblet cells and promote tear secretion, thus achieving an effective treatment for DED. Abstract
PURPOSE To explore whether implantable collamer lens implantation has any effect on the postoperative objective indicators of dry eye and to determine the severity of its influence on each indicator. METHODS This prospective observational trial was performed in the Department of Ophthalmology of West China Hospital and was approved by the Biomedical Ethics Sub-Committee of the West China Hospital of Sichuan University. A total of 89 non-dry eye patients (178 eyes in total) who received ICL implantation surgery at West China Hospital of Sichuan University were enrolled. The noninvasive keratograph tear film breakup time (NIKBUT), noninvasive keratograph tear meniscus height (NIKTMH), score of lipid layer, score of meibomian gland function, and hyperemia index were obtained via the OCULUS Keratograph for all subjects before surgery and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery. The fluorescein tear film breakup time (FBUT), corneal fluorescein staining score (CFS), and Schirmer test I were also measured at the same time. RESULTS A total of 178 eyes completed the 1-week and 1-month follow-up, and 40 eyes completed the 3-month follow-up. Compared with the preoperative baseline, there was no significant difference in the NIKBUT or the corneal fluorescein staining score at each follow-up time point (P > 0.05, P > 0.05, P > 0.05). The FBUT and Schirmer test I at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery were significantly higher than the preoperative baseline (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.01). The NIKTMH and the score of lipid layer were significantly lower than the preoperative baseline at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05). The score of meibomian gland function and hyperemia index were significantly lower than the preoperative baseline 1 week after surgery (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION ICL implantation has no adverse effect on the occurrence of postoperative dry eye, but it reduces the basal tear secretion of patients after surgery and has adverse effects on the indices of meibomian gland function in the short term postoperatively.

Abstract
Psychosomatic ophthalmology emerged after World War II because patients attended clinics with symptoms that were not explained by physiological findings, subsequently it became clear that psychological distress could be associated with several ocular disorders, including dry eye syndrome. Dry eye disease is a common disorder with increasing prevalence due to environmental factors such as pollution, smoking, and sleep disorders. The burden of dry eye disease affects both patients and society, making it a very important target for investigation. Numerous studies showed that dry eye disease prevalence including the severity of the symptoms of dry eye is higher in patients suffering from depression and/or anxiety. Some studies suggest the implication of serotonin in tears being dysregulated by the disorders. The current review highlights the evidence of the association between anxiety, depression, and dry eye disease and summarizes the recent advances in research in this area, together with a brief explanation of the physiology of stress that could lead to psychological disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate dry eye disease (DED) in newly diagnosed patients with depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD This observational study included 48 MDD patients in Group 1 and 20 healthy controls in Group 2. Psychiatric and ophthalmic examinations, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer's test, tear breakup time (TBUT), Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and ocular staining were conducted. The results were statistically compared. RESULTS The participants, comprising 32 men and 36 women, had a mean age of 31.08 ± 11.7 years (18-64 years). Group 1 had a mean BDI score of 30.87 ± 8.56, while Group 2 had a score of 1.3 ± 1.3 (p < 0.001). In Group 1, 28 patients were diagnosed with DED, whereas in Group 2, six subjects were diagnosed with DED. The mean Schirmer's results in Group 1 and Group 2 were (mm/5 min) 10.87 ± 2.44 and 12.70 ± 2.3, respectively, and were significantly lower in Group 1 (p < 0.001). The mean OSDI scores in Group 1 (34.95 ± 15.8) were significantly higher compared to Group 2 (3.2 ± 3.1) (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in mean TBUT between Group 1 (9.41 ± 2.6 s) and Group 2 (9.8 ± 0.61 s) (p > 0.05). Significant correlations were found between BDI scores and Schirmer's results as well as OSDI scores (p < 0.05, p = 0.02, respectively). No statistically significant correlations were found between BDI scores and TBUT or MGD (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION DED was found to be more prevalent in the MDD group. The severity of MDD and DED, as indicated by BDI, OSDI, and Schirmer's results, was found to be correlated. It was observed that patients with higher depression scores had more severe dry eye. As a result, we recommend performing ophthalmic examinations in newly diagnosed MDD patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The clinical presentations of dry eye disease (DED) and depression (DEP) often comanifest. However, the robustness and the mechanisms underlying this association were undetermined. OBJECTIVES To this end, we set up a three-segment study that employed multimodality results (meta-analysis, genome-wide association study [GWAS] and Mendelian randomization [MR]) to elucidate the association, common pathways and causality between DED and DEP. METHODS A meta-analysis comprising 26 case-control studies was first conducted to confirm the DED-DEP association. Next, we performed a linkage disequilibrium (LD)-adjusted GWAS and targeted phenotype association study (PheWAS) in East Asian TW Biobank (TWB) and European UK Biobank (UKB) populations. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were further screened for molecular interactions and common pathways at the functional gene level. To further elucidate the activated pathways in DED and DEP, a systemic transcriptome review was conducted on RNA sequencing samples from the Gene Expression Omnibus. Finally, 48 MR experiments were implemented to examine the bidirectional causation between DED and DEP. RESULTS Our meta-analysis showed that DED patients are associated with an increased DEP prevalence (OR = 1.83), while DEP patients have a concurrent higher risk of DED (OR = 2.34). Notably, cross-disease GWAS analysis revealed that similar genetic architecture (rG = 0.19) and pleiotropic functional genes contributed to phenotypes in both diseases. Through protein-protein interaction and ontology convergence, we summarized the pleiotropic functional genes under the ontology of immune activation, which was further validated by a transcriptome systemic review. Importantly, the inverse variance-weighted (IVW)-MR experiments in both TWB and UKB populations (p value <0.001) supported the bidirectional exposure-outcome causation for DED-to-DEP and DEP-to-DED. Despite stringent LD-corrected instrumental variable re-selection, the bidirectional causation between DED and DEP remained. CONCLUSION With the multi-modal evidence combined, we consolidated the association and causation between DED and DEP.

Abstract
Dry Eye Disease (DED) is an increasingly common condition that affects between 5% and 50% of the global population. Even though DED is most frequently diagnosed in older people, it has also been diagnosed in young adults and adolescents more frequently in recent years (employees, gamers). People can experience different types of symptoms and find it challenging to read, watch TV, cook, climb stairs, and meet friends. Mild and severe dry eye can reduce quality of life similarly to mild psoriasis and moderate-to-severe angina. Furthermore, DED patients experience serious difficulties driving vehicles, especially at night, and show a decrease in work productivity, which, when combined with the relevant indirect cost that this condition produces, poses a serious challenge in our days. In addition, DED patients are more likely to develop depression and suicidal ideations and experience frequent sleep disorders. Finally, it is discussed how lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity, blinking exercises, and a proper diet, have positive implications for the management of this condition. Our aim is to draw attention to the negative effects of dry eye in real life, which are unique to each patient, especially as they relate to the non-visual symptoms experienced by DED patients.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for depression and anxiety in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). Methods We conducted a telephone-based survey of patients with NLDO who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) at the Department of Ophthalmology of Peking University Third Hospital in China between January 2016 and January 2021. Depression and anxiety were assessed with the PHQ-9 (range 0-25) and STAI (range 20-80) scales. PHQ-9 ≥ 5 and STAI ≥ 55 were considered clinically significant. Logistic regression and linear regression were performed to determine the factors related to depression and anxiety. Results Of 565 patients approached, 344 (60.9%) completed the survey. A total of 13.1% of patients had mild-severe depression and 63.4% had severe anxiety. Univariate logistic regression revealed that hypertension, dry eye, and cataract were associated with mild to severe depression (P = 0.018, 0.045, 0.035, respectively). Dry eye was associated with severe anxiety (P = 0.007). Univariate linear regression revealed that male and income levels were significantly negatively correlated with PHQ-9 scores (P = 0.011, 0.010, respectively). Hypertension and dry eye were significantly positively correlated with PHQ-9 scores (P = 0.030, P < 0.001, respectively). Male, income levels, and educational levels were significantly negatively correlated with STAI scores (P = 0.022, P < 0.001, P = 0.005, respectively). Dry eye was significantly positively correlated with STAI scores (P < 0.001). Conclusion Prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders was relatively high among NLDO patients. Our results demonstrate the importance of depression and anxiety screening and psychosocial support for patients with NLDO, which can improve their quality of life and compliance with medical appointments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with Inherited Retinal Diseases typically experience progressive, irreversible vision loss resulting in low vision and blindness. As a result, these patients are at high risk for vision-related disability and psychological distress, including depression and anxiety. Historically, the relationship between self-reported visual difficulty (encompassing metrics of vision-related disability and quality of life, among others) and vision-related anxiety has been regarded as an association and not a causal relationship. As a result, there are limited interventions available that address vision-related anxiety and the psychological and behavioral components of self-reported visual difficulty. MATERIALS AND METHODS We applied the Bradford Hill criteria to evaluate the case for a bidirectional causal relationship between vision-related anxiety and self-reported visual difficulty. RESULTS There is sufficient evidence to satisfy all nine of the Bradford Hill criteria of causality (strength of association, consistency, biological gradient, temporality, experimental evidence, analogy, specificity, plausibility, and coherence) for the relationship between vision-related anxiety and self-reported visual difficulty. CONCLUSIONS The evidence suggests that there is a direct positive feedback loop-a bidirectional causal relationship-between vision-related anxiety and self-reported visual difficulty. More longitudinal research on the relationship between objectively-measured vision impairment, self-reported visual difficulty, and vision-related psychological distress is needed. Additionally, more investigation of potential interventions for vision-related anxiety and visual difficulty is needed.

Abstract
Societal factors associated with ocular surface diseases were mapped using a framework to characterize the relationship between the individual, their health and environment. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigating factors on ocular surface diseases were considered in a systematic review. Age and sex effects were generally well-characterized for inflammatory, infectious, autoimmune and trauma-related conditions. Sex and gender, through biological, socio-economic, and cultural factors impact the prevalence and severity of disease, access to, and use of, care. Genetic factors, race, smoking and co-morbidities are generally well characterized, with interdependencies with geographical, employment and socioeconomic factors. Living and working conditions include employment, education, water and sanitation, poverty and socioeconomic class. Employment type and hobbies are associated with eye trauma and burns. Regional, global socio-economic, cultural and environmental conditions, include remoteness, geography, seasonality, availability of and access to services. Violence associated with war, acid attacks and domestic violence are associated with traumatic injuries. The impacts of conflict, pandemic and climate are exacerbated by decreased food security, access to health services and workers. Digital technology can impact diseases through physical and mental health effects and access to health information and services. The COVID-19 pandemic and related mitigating strategies are mostly associated with an increased risk of developing new or worsening existing ocular surface diseases. Societal factors impact the type and severity of ocular surface diseases, although there is considerable interdependence between factors. The overlay of the digital environment, natural disasters, conflict and the pandemic have modified access to services in some regions.

Abstract
Many factors in the domains of mental, physical, and social health have been associated with various ocular surface diseases, with most of the focus centered on aspects of dry eye disease (DED). Regarding mental health factors, several cross-sectional studies have noted associations between depression and anxiety, and medications used to treat these disorders, and DED symptoms. Sleep disorders (both involving quality and quantity of sleep) have also been associated with DED symptoms. Under the domain of physical health, several factors have been linked to meibomian gland abnormalities, including obesity and face mask wear. Cross-sectional studies have also linked chronic pain conditions, specifically migraine, chronic pain syndrome and fibromyalgia, to DED, principally focusing on DED symptoms. A systematic review and meta-analysis reviewed available data and concluded that various chronic pain conditions increased the risk of DED (variably defined), with odds ratios ranging from 1.60 to 2.16. However, heterogeneity was noted, highlighting the need for additional studies examining the impact of chronic pain on DED signs and subtype (evaporative versus aqueous deficient). With respect to societal factors, tobacco use has been most closely linked to tear instability, cocaine to decreased corneal sensitivity, and alcohol to tear film disturbances and DED symptoms.

Abstract
Recent clinical studies indicate that dry eye is closely associated with psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. Here, we investigated whether two types of mouse dry eye models showed depressive-like behavior in forced swim and sucrose preference tests, and whether voluntary wheel-running helped ameliorate depressive states. To reproduce the dry eye models, the exorbital lacrimal glands (ELG) or exorbital and intraorbital lacrimal glands (ELG+ILG) were bilaterally excised from male C57BL/6J mice. Tear volume was persistently reduced in both models, but the ELG+ILG excision mice exhibited more severe corneal damage than the ELG excision mice. In the forced swim and sucrose preference tests, the gland excision mice showed longer immobility and shorter climbing times, and lower sucrose preference than sham-operated mice, respectively, which appeared earlier in the ELG+ILG excision mice. Wheel-running activities were significantly lower in the ELG+ILG excision mice, but not in the ELG excision mice. After short-period wheel-running, the longer immobility times and the shorter climbing times in the forced swim completely disappeared in both models. Our results suggest that dry eyes might directly cause a depressive disorder that depends on the severity and duration of the ocular surface damage, and that voluntary motor activity could help recovery from a depressive state induced by dry eye.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Patients undergoing exenteration have significant anxiety and depression, and lower quality of life that worsens after surgery. Therefore, counselling by an eye health-care provider along with the team of psychologist and psychiatrist could be provided pre-operatively to assess baseline psychosocial status and be continued post-operatively to look for any deterioration. BACKGROUND Orbital exenteration comes with psychological trauma of disfigurement of face. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of life, anxiety and depression in patients undergoing orbital exenteration, before and after the procedure; and also compared the same with patients previously rehabilitated by spectacle-mounted prosthesis after exenteration. METHODS It was a prospective cohort study. Group I included patients who were planned to undergo orbital exenteration, and group II were those already using spectacle-mounted prosthesis post orbital exenteration for at least 3 months. Level of depression was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9), anxiety using Generalised Anxiety and Depression scale-7(GAD-7), and quality of life was assessed using Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy- General (FACT-G) score. RESULTS A total of 19 patients were recruited in group I and 10 patients in group II. The baseline demographic factors were comparable. The scores for PHQ-9 and GAD-7 were significantly higher at 3-month post-exenteration follow-up, indicating significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression after orbital exenteration in group I. Both these scores were significantly lower in group II compared to group I (3 months follow-up), indicating lower levels of anxiety and depression after rehabilitation with prosthesis. The FACT-G and its subscores were all significantly higher in group II patients compared to post-operative scores of group I patients, indicating higher overall quality of life after rehabilitation with prosthesis. CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing exenteration have a significant level of anxiety and depression, and lower quality of life that worsens after orbital exenteration.

Abstract
Objective Investigate the anxiety and depression states among dry eye (DE) patients during the COVID-19 outbreak and analyze their influence factors. Methods The study was conducted in a tertiary eye hospital in Tianjin, China from March–April 2021. Four hundred twenty-eight DE patients were tested with the Ocular Surface Disease Index, Short Healthy Anxiety Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Descriptive statistics was used to assess the difference between DE with depression or anxiety among different groups. And multiple linear regression was used to explore factors that influence anxiety and depression in DE patients. Results The incidence rates of anxiety and depression among DE patients during COVID-19 were 27.34 and 26.87%, respectively. The proportion with comorbid anxiety and depression was 24.30%. Patients' education level (t = −3.001, P < 0.05; t = −3.631, P < 0.05), course of disease (t = 2.341, P < 0.05; t = 2.444, P < 0.05), health anxiety (t = 3.015, P < 0.05; t = 2.731, P < 0.05), and subjective sleep quality (t = 3.610, P < 0.05; t = 4.203, P < 0.05) had certain influences on anxiety and depression. Conclusion The results showed that subjective symptoms of DE patients were related to depression and anxiety. Higher education, shorter disease duration, lower health anxiety levels, and better subjective sleep quality were associated with the reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms in DE patients. These findings could be deemed beneficial to the treatment and prevention of DE during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is an eye disorder caused by alteration of production or composition of tear film. Symptoms include dry eye dryness, burning, itching and pain, and often is associated with emotional stress, anxiety and depression. Evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture to treat DES has recently appeared in literature but not on acupuncture treatment of DES related anxiety or depression symptoms. A 53-year-old male, good health, no serious medical conditions, with history of contact lenses wearing, anxious personality traits and anxiety symptoms, suffering from DES, was treated with acupuncture, twice a week for three weeks with somatic and ear acupoints selected from literature. Inferior marginal lacrimal meniscus, lipid layer interferometry, tear ferning test, psychiatric interview, State-Trait Inventory -Y (STAI-Y) questionnaire and Hamilton-Anxiety Rating (HAM-A) scale was evaluated before and after treatment and at 15, 30, 60, and 90 days follow-up. Results show clear and lasting improvements with remission of eye symptoms, together with clear and stable improvements of anxiety symptoms. Acupuncture is an effective treatment also for DES related anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE This report shares a technique that can be utilized to assist training patients to properly and safely apply and remove prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem devices (PD) or scleral lenses in order to reduce patient training nervousness, limit adverse events from training and limit training failures. PURPOSE To introduce a novel scleral lens application and removal training method. CASE REPORT A 28-year-old female with limbal stem cell deficiency secondary to contact lens overwear in the left eye greater than the right eye presented for prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem treatment. Her ocular history included herpes simplex keratitis, fungal keratitis and acanthamoeba keratitis in the left eye which ultimately resulted in corneal perforation requiring repair with cyanoacrylate adhesive. The patient was initially fitted with a PD in 2015 in the left eye but had difficulty with application of the device on the eye which resulted in discontinuation of use. She returned to the clinic in 2021 for a re-evaluation and PD re-fitting. To address her past difficulties surrounding application and removal of the device, a novel piggyback technique (applying a second scleral lens on top of the primary customized scleral lens that is already on the eye) was utilized to successfully train the patient. CONCLUSIONS A novel piggyback training technique can be used to overcome obstacles during the scleral lens application and removal training process.

Abstract
Importance Depression is more prevalent in patients with dry eye disease (DED) than in the general population; however, the association between severity of DED and depression needs further evaluation. Objective To investigate the association between depression and severity of DED symptoms and signs, including inflammatory markers. Design, Setting, and Participants Secondary cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis performed in April to December 2020 of data from Dry Eye Assessment and Management (DREAM) study, a randomized clinical trial from October 2014 to July 2016 including patients with moderate to severe symptoms and signs of DED. Enrolled from 27 ophthalmology and optometry centers, both academic and private, in 17 US states, 535 patients were followed up for 1 year. Exposure Participants screened positive for depression if they scored 42 or less on the Mental Component Summary (MCS) of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. Main Outcomes and Measures Symptoms of DED were assessed by Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Brief Ocular Discomfort Index (BODI) and signs assessed by tear film breakup time, Schirmer test, corneal and conjunctival staining, tear osmolarity, and meibomian gland dysfunction at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. A composite severity sign score was calculated from all 6 signs. Inflammatory markers (cytokines in tears and HLA-DR expression by conjunctival surface cells) were measured for some trial participants. Features of DED were compared between participants with and without depression and adjusted for age, sex, race, visits, and baseline comorbidities. Results Among the 535 participants, mean (SD) age was 58 (13.2) years, 434 participants (81%) were women, and 398 (74.4%) were White. Participants who screened positive for depression had worse DED symptoms by OSDI (effect size = 0.45, P < .001) and BODI (effect size = 0.46, P < .001) and composite DED sign score (effect size = 0.21, P = .006). Lower MCS score (ie, worse depression) was correlated with higher OSDI score (ie, worse DED symptoms) at baseline (Spearman ρ = -0.09, P = .03), 6 months (ρ = -0.20, P < .001), and 12 months (ρ = -0.21, P < .001). Inflammatory markers did not differ by depression status. Conclusions and Relevance Depression was associated with more severe dry eye symptoms and overall signs, suggesting that among patients with moderate to severe DED, those with depression may be likely to have more severe DED. These findings support consideration of depression as a comorbidity when managing patients with DED. Further study is needed to elucidate the relationship.

Abstract
Purpose Anxiety and depression are important risk factors for dry eye disease (DED). The aims of this research are to identify the cause of anxiety and depression in DED patients and explore their strategies in coping with DED. Methods This is a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews, and the interviews records were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Participants were recruited from a large university affiliated hospital in the north of China, including 47 participants affected by depression and anxiety. Results Analysis revealed the causes of anxiety and depression in DED patients could be divided into three major themes and nine subthemes: (1) From hospital: including difficulties in diagnosing and seeking medical advice, neglect or lack of attention from clinicians, low treatment satisfaction and complex comorbidities; (2) From daily life: including life satisfaction and well-being, changes in lifestyle pattern and changes in workstyle pattern; (3) From society: including burden of disease and reduction of social interaction. Most DED Patients with anxiety and depression were more likely to face the condition as well as receive treatments negatively, while the others tended to seek treatments unduly and blindly. Conclusion This investigation offers new insights into the understanding difficulties in DED patients with anxiety and depression, and provides valuable guidance for supporting them to reduce depression and anxiety as well as improve prognosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the correlation of the worldwide prevalence of visual impairment and depressive disorders. METHODS This is an ecologic study on Global Burden of Disease 2019 data. Global and national prevalence numbers and rates of vision impairment (VI) and depressive disorders were obtained from database. The human development index (HDI) and socio-demographic index (SDI) were derived from international open databases. Main outcome measures were the correlation of the VI and depressive disorders in total and different age, sex, and socioeconomic subgroups. RESULTS In 2019, the worldwide prevalence of total VI and total depressive disorders were 9.6% (95% Uncertainty Interval (UI): 8.0-11.3) and 3.8% (95% UI: 3.4-4.2), respectively. The prevalence rates of total VI (r = 0.38, P < 0.001) as well as cataract (r = 0.43, P < 0.001), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (r = 0.32, P < 0.001), refractive disorders (r = 0.19, P < 0.001) and near vision loss (r = 0.33, P < 0.001) correlated, positively, with dysthymia. In addition, the prevalence rates of glaucoma (r for total depressive disorders = 0.37, P < 0.001 and r for major depressive disorders (MDD) = 0.38, P < 0.001) and AMD (r for total depressive disorders = 0.37, P < 0.001 and r for MDD = 0.28, P < 0.001) had a positive correlation with MDD and total depressive disorders. The correlations remained significant in sociodemographic subgroups. CONCLUSION There was a significant correlation between national prevalence rates of VI and ocular disabilities with depressive disorders, worldwide.

Abstract
Background: Progressive and irreversible vision loss has been shown to place a patient at risk of mental health problems such as anxiety. However, the reported prevalence of anxiety symptoms and disorders among eye disease patients vary across studies. Thus, this study aims to clarify the estimated prevalence of anxiety symptoms and disorders among ophthalmic disease patients. Methods: Relevant studies on the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and disorders among eye disease patients were collected through international databases, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. A random-effects model was used to determine the pooled prevalence of anxiety symptoms and disorders among ophthalmic disease patients. Results: The 95 included studies yielded a pooled prevalence of 31.2% patients with anxiety symptoms and 19.0% with anxiety disorders among subjects with ophthalmic disease. Pediatric patients were more anxious (58.6%) than adults (29%). Anxiety symptoms were most prevalent in uveitis (53.5%), followed by dry eye disease (DED, 37.2%), retinitis pigmentosa (RP, 36.5%), diabetic retinopathy (DR, 31.3%), glaucoma (30.7%), myopia (24.7%), age-related macular degeneration (AMD, 21.6%), and cataract (21.2%) patients. Anxiety disorders were most prevalent in thyroid eye disease (TED, 28.9%), followed by glaucoma (22.2%) and DED (11.4%). When compared with healthy controls, there was a twofold increase on the prevalence of anxiety symptoms (OR = 1.912, 95% CI 1.463–2.5, p < 0.001) and anxiety disorders (OR = 2.281, 95% CI 1.168–4.454, p = 0.016). Conclusion: Anxiety symptoms and disorders are common problems associated with ophthalmic disease patients. Thus, comprehensive and appropriate treatments are necessary for treating anxiety symptoms and disorders among ophthalmic disease patients.

Abstract
The association between dry eye disease (DED) and psychiatric conditions is a highly researched topic. This work reviews the literature on this relationship, examining the prevalence and correlations of depression and anxiety with dry eye signs and symptoms. A comprehensive literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and gray literature was conducted, with keywords for dry eye and mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and suicide. Eligible studies underwent quality assessment using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Meta-analysis was performed using STATA 15.0. Fixed- and random-effects models were computed based on the presence of heterogeneity. Thirty-two studies were included, with 31 reporting on depression and 19 on anxiety. Meta-analysis results found a depression prevalence of 40% (CI: [0.29, 0.52]) in DED patients, with 1.81 times higher odds of prevalence compared to controls (CI: [1.61, 2.02]). Prevalence of anxiety was 39% (CI: [0.15, 0.64]), with 2.32 times higher odds of prevalence compared to controls (CI: [1.67, 3.23]). Depression scores were significantly higher in patients with DED in all studies. Anxiety scores were significantly higher in DED patients in studies using all scales except the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety Subscale. DED symptom scores were significantly associated with depression (ES = 0.43; CI: [0.31, 0.55]) and anxiety (ES = 0.41; CI: [0.32, 0.50]) scores. In conclusion, depression and anxiety are more prevalent and severe in DED patients and are correlated with dry eye symptoms but not signs. These findings highlight the interrelationship between these disorders and have important implications for providing appropriate care to these patients.

Abstract
Background We aimed to investigate the symptoms of the dry eye disease (DED) of hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods This cross-sectional, observational study analysis included 91 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the five-item Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5) were used to assess the severity of DED symptoms in the patients, and the analysis of variance was used to determine the factors associated with DED. Results A total of 42 patients consented to complete the investigation (response rate 46.15%). There were 26 (61.90%) patients who were diagnosed with DED symptoms by OSDI, and there were 28 (66.67%) patients with DED symptoms who were diagnosed by DEQ-5 score. For the biochemical tests, the patients with DED symptoms had lower aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels compared to those with no DED symptoms (20.86 vs. 42.14, p=0.04). Further analysis showed that a previous history of cardiac or stroke disease (p=0.02) and typical symptoms of muscle soreness (p=0.03) were significantly different among the four DED symptoms groups on the basis of OSDI scores. The contributing factors of OSDI were mainly focused on visual function and environmental triggers. Conclusion The incidence of DED symptoms is higher in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The serum AST levels, history of cardiac or stroke disease, and the typical symptoms of muscle soreness may be the main impact factors on DED symptoms. We also need to pay more attention to the visual function and environmental triggers of hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess whether migraine might be associated with the increased risk of dry eye disease and to determine the strength of the association between migraine and dry eye disease. METHODS We searched EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science databases and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, and VIP databases for studies that investigated the association between dry eye and migraine from inception to September 8, 2020. Relevant data were extracted by 2 investigators independently. Publication bias and heterogeneity were evaluated. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed by metaanalysis using random-effects models. RESULTS Of the 565 studies identified, 7 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this metaanalysis. Patients with migraine had significantly higher morbidity of dry eye compared with the control group (OR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.32-1.82; P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that the association between dry eye and migraine was stronger in hospital-based studies (OR = 1.97, P = 0.036) than population-based studies (OR = 1.42, P < 0.001). In addition, differences in geographic location and diagnostic criteria have no effect on the results. CONCLUSIONS There was a significant association between dry eye and migraine. Patients with migraine are more prone to suffer from dry eye than subjects without migraine, and the association strength varies among populations studied.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of comprehensive treatment on ocular surface function and the visual quality of online teachers with a mild-to-moderate dry eye condition during the early phase of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Secondary school online teachers diagnosed with a mild-to-moderate dry eye disease in our outpatient clinic from February to May 2020 were enrolled in this retrospective cross-section study, and all patients received dry eye comprehensive treatment. A questionnaire survey on eye-use habits, visual quality and dry eye-related indicators was collected before and after treatment (2 and 4 weeks). The changes and the correlations between indicators before and after treatment were compared. Results A total of 30 patients (15 females and 15 males) were included. After comprehensive treatment, patients had significantly higher central tear meniscus height (TMH), non-invasive first tear film breakup time (NIBUTf) and non-invasive average tear film breakup time (NIBUTav) than those before with statistical significance (P < 0.05). Lower ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and Meibomian gland scores were observed after treatment with statistical significance (P < 0.05). Objective scatter index (OSI), modulation transfer function (MTF) cutoff, strehl ratio (SR), and tear film objective scatter index (TF-OSI) were significantly improved after treatment (P < 0.05). Besides, TF-OSI was positively correlated with the changes in OSDI, Meibomian gland score, eye-use duration and OSI with statistical significance (P < 0.05), while it was negatively correlated with NIBUTf, NIBUTav, the TMH of the central lower eyelid, SR, sleep duration, conjunctival congestion and the MTF cutoff (P < 0.05), respectively. No correlation between TF-OSI and ciliary congestion was found (P > 0.05). Conclusion Comprehensive treatment could effectively improve the symptoms and visual quality of online teachers with a mild-to-moderate dry eye condition during the early stage of COVID-19 pandemic.

Influence of Different Antidepressants on Ocular Surface in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder. J Clin Psychopharmacol 2021; 41:49-52. Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have previously reported the association between dry eye and depression along with the treatment of depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different antidepressant drugs on tear parameters in patients with major depressive disorder. METHODS We recruited 132 patients who were using different antidepressants and 58 healthy controls. Venlafaxine, duloxetine, escitalopram, and sertraline were used by 34, 28, 36, and 34 patients, respectively. The participants filled out and completed the Beck Depression Scale. We recorded Schirmer test, tear breakup time (TBUT) and corneal staining values of the participants. The Ocular Surface Disease Index was completed by the participants. In addition, we evaluated the tear meniscus parameters by using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. RESULTS All conventional dry eye tests and tear meniscus parameters were significantly lesser in the depression group than in the control group (Schirmer test, 11.41 ± 6.73 mm and 22.53 ± 4.98 mm; TBUT, 5.29 ± 2.92 seconds and 13.38 ± 1.72; Corneal staining, tear meniscus area, 0.026 ± 0.012 mm2 and 0.11 ± 0.025 mm2; tear meniscus depth, 182.75 ± 78.79 μm and 257.48 ± 90.1 μm; tear meniscus height, 290.3 ± 133.63 μm and 459.78 ± 180.26 μm, in patients and controls, respectively). The tear parameters of the duloxetine group were lowest among the drug groups and Schirmer test, and TBUT of the venlafaxine group was statistically significantly different from the duloxetine group (P = 0.028 and P = 0.017, respectively). Ocular Surface Disease Index score of the depression group was significantly higher than the control group (31.12 ± 21.15 and 17.43 ± 11.75 in depression and control group, respectively.). CONCLUSIONS We found that the usage of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors affects the ocular surface by a mechanism other than the anticholinergic system. Besides serotonin blockage, the noradrenaline blockade of serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors may increase the dry eye findings on the ocular surface.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between dry eye disease and patients with newly diagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS Thirty treatment-naive patients with OCD and 30 healthy controls were included in this prospective study. The Ocular Surface Disease Index, tear breakup time, Schirmer I test, corneal and conjunctival staining grade (Oxford scale), and neutrophil-to-leucocyte ratio values were obtained for all participants. RESULTS The comparison of the patients with OCD and healthy controls showed significantly higher values in Ocular Surface Disease Index (34.8 vs. 20.8, P = 0.001), corneal Oxford scoring (0.9 vs. 0.6, P = 0.02), and conjunctival Oxford scoring (0.8 vs. 0.5, P = 0.04), with consistently lower values in the Schirmer I test (15.7 vs. 18.8, P = 0.043) and tear breakup time (9.1 vs. 12.9, P = 0.001). The mean neutrophil-to-leucocyte ratio values were significantly higher in the OCD group compared with the controls (2.4 ± 0.9 vs. 1.6 ± 0.4, respectively; P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed a relation between dry eye disease and patients with newly diagnosed OCD who were not using any psychiatric drug. Our findings suggest that inflammation, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of both diseases, may be responsible for this relationship.

Abstract
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND Several clinic-based and large population studies have associated a depression diagnosis or depression severity with dry eye disease (DED) or symptoms. On the other hand, several other large population studies have found that antidepressant use was also associated with DED. Unfortunately, many of the studies finding associations between depression and DED did not control for concomitant antidepressant use, whereas the ones that found associations between antidepressant use and DED did not control for severity of depression or other psychiatric indications for selective serotonin inhibitor use. The purpose of this review was to identify whether depression and antidepressants play an independent role from one another in the onset of DED. METHODS/PROCEDURES A systematic literature review was conducted searching for DED studies that adjusted for concomitant antidepressant use in depressed patients, that adjusted for depressive symptoms in patients taking antidepressants, and that enrolled depressed patients who were not taking psychiatric medications at the time of the study. Additionally, the prescribing information of marketed antidepressants was reviewed to determine rates of dry eyes reported during clinical trials. FINDINGS/RESULTS The literature review initially identified 43 studies with 13 fitting the inclusion criteria. Although these studies varied in their quality, 7 revealed statistically significant associations between depression and DED, whereas 7, including 1 randomized trial, revealed significant associations between antidepressants and DED. Sixteen percent of the antidepressant package inserts inspected reported DED symptoms as an infrequent risk. IMPLICATIONS/CONCLUSIONS This review suggests that independent of one another, both depression and antidepressant use are associated with DED.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep is an important determinant of health and quality of life. This study aimed to clarify the association between dry eye and sleep quality using a large population-based cohort. METHODS 71,761 participants (19-94 yrs, 59.4% female) from the Lifelines cohort in the Netherlands were assessed for dry eye using the Women's Health Study Dry Eye Questionnaire. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between poor sleep quality (PSQI score >5) and dry eye, while correcting for age, sex, BMI, education, income, and 51 possible confounding comorbidities, including autoimmune diseases and psychiatric disorders. RESULTS Overall, 8.9% of participants had dry eye. Of these, 36.4% had poor sleep quality compared to 24.8% of controls (OR 1.52 (95%CI 1.44-1.60), P < 0.0001, corrected for age and sex). After correcting for all comorbidities, dry eye was still associated with poor sleep (OR 1.20 (95%CI 1.11-1.28), P < 0.0001). This relationship was seen across all ages and sexes. Patients with dry eye scored worse on all subcomponents of the PSQI. Almost one-in-two (44.9%) persons with dry eye symptoms "often" or "constantly" had poor sleep quality. This proportion was similar to participants with sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. Additionally, increasing symptom frequency was tied to increased prevalence of poor sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS All components of sleep quality were significantly reduced in participants with dry eye, even after correcting for comorbidities. These results indicate the substantial impact of dry eye on patients' lives, especially for those with frequent symptoms.

Abstract
Cases of dry eye disease involving a neuropathic basis for symptoms and a poor correlation between symptoms and objective signs of dry eye disease can be associated with unsatisfactory responses to treatments which are limited to attempts to restore lacrimal function unit deficiencies. This review examines a wider range of circumstances under which the same kind of poor correlation between signs, symptoms and treatment results can be found. Some cases of computer vision syndrome can present for examination at times when objective signs related to reported symptoms have dissipated. A thorough history should explain this type of presentation for which symptoms might otherwise appear to be unexplained. However, mental health disorders can also be the basis for apparently unexplained levels of symptoms of dry eye disease. Anxiety, depression, hypochondriasis, stress, sleep and mood disorders as well as neuroticism for example, may be associated with exacerbation of symptoms to degrees that are not consistent with the levels of tear homeostasis anomalies that are assessed. The conclusion is drawn that failure to consider mental health comorbidities may result in symptomatic patients being exposed to less successful attempts to remediate tear dysfunctions when, for example, the symptoms have a somatic basis. Appropriate screening and referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist may be the key to managing some patients whose symptoms do not correlate with objective evidence of dry eye disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dry eye may impact quality of life and daily activities and depression is a widespread illness. Many studies showed the two diseases often coexist. However, studies were limited to retrospective chart review. This study aimed to investigate the association between dry eye and depressive symptoms in an older Asian population. METHODS The Shihpai Eye Study was a community-based, cross-sectional survey of vision and eye diseases among noninstitutionalized subjects 65 years of age and older in Shihpai, Taipei, Taiwan. Residents fulfilling these criteria were randomly selected to be invited to participate in the study, which included a questionnaire and an eye examination conducted between July 1, 1999 and December 31, 2000. RESULTS Of the 2045 subjects recruited, 1361 (66.6%) completed the examination. 8.8% (95% confidence interval (CI): 7.3-10.3%) of the participants were diagnosed to have depressive symptoms. Under multivariate analysis, depressive symptoms were significantly associated with frequent symptoms of dry eye (odds ratio (OR): 1.97, 95% CI: 1.36-2.92; p < 0.001). None of the dry eye signs was associated with depressive symptoms. For participants reporting frequent symptoms, tear-film break-up time ≤ 10 s (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.38-3.05; p < 0.001), Schirmer test score ≤ 5 mm (OR: 2.01, 95% CI: 1.33-3.03; p < 0.001), and meibomian gland disease (OR: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.31-3.01; p = 0.001) were significantly related to depressive symptoms. Fluorescein staining of the cornea was not correlated to depressive symptoms in participants with dry eye symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms are more highly correlated with dry eye symptoms than dry eye signs.

Abstract
Changes in vision can have significant impact on health and quality of life. Differences between women and men have been identified in the incidence of several eye conditions. Some of these differences are a result of the greater longevity of women. However, the eye, like other organs, is susceptible to the impacts of inflammation and sex steroids. Conditions, such as thyroid eye disease, optic neuritis, and dry eye disease are related to autoimmune or inflammatory conditions and are, thus, more common among women. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension occurs disproportionately in women of childbearing age; the etiology of this condition appears to be related to both inflammatory and sex hormone fluctuations.
