Corneal Light Scatter After Ultrathin Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty Versus Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty in Descemet Endothelial Thickness Comparison Trial: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty is the predominant keratoplasty procedure in Germany since 2016: a report of the DOG-section cornea and its keratoplasty registry

BACKGROUND/AIMS

This retrospective multicentric panel study provides absolute numbers, types of and indications for corneal transplantation in Germany from 2011 to 2021 and sets them into the international context.

METHODS

A questionnaire was sent to the 104 German ophthalmologic surgery departments and 93 (89%) provided their data.

RESULTS

The number of reported keratoplasties more than doubled from 2011 (n=4474) to 2021 (n=8998). Lamellar keratoplasties (49% posterior (n=2883), 4% anterior (n=231)) surpassed penetrating keratoplasty (PKP, 47%, n=2721) for the first time in 2014. Since 2016, Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) has become the predominant keratoplasty procedure in Germany. Its number increased by 1.5-fold from 3850 (2016) to 5812 (2021). Main indications in 2021 were Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD, 43%), pseudophakic corneal decompensation (12%), repeated keratoplasty (11%), infections (7%), keratoconus (6%) and corneal scarring (4%, others: 9%). The PKP percentage decreased from 70.2% in 2011 (n=3141) to 31.7% in 2021 (n=2853). Descemet's stripping (automated) endothelial keratoplasties (DSAEKs) decreased to 1% in 2021 (n=74). 98.6% of all posterior lamellar keratoplasties were DMEKs in Germany in 2021. The number of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasties (DALKs) remained comparable from 2011 (n=269) to 2021 (n=251, 2.8%).

CONCLUSION

Main indications for corneal transplantation in Germany (2021) were FECD and pseudophakic corneal decompensation. DMEK is by far the predominant corneal transplantation procedure since 2016 followed by PKP, whose absolute number decreased only slightly during the decade from 2011 to 2021. DALK proportions remain low, but stable, whereas DSAEK decreased annually and plays a minor role in Germany.

Corneal densitometry patterns in Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty and Descemet stripping automated keratoplasty

PURPOSE

To compare corneal densitometry in a consecutive series of 52 endothelial keratoplasties (DMEK/DSAEK) using a Scheimpflug-based device after six months of follow-up.

METHODS

Corneal densitometry (CD) values of 102 eyes were divided into three main groups: 33 DMEKs, 19 DSAEKs, and 50 healthy eyes without previous ocular surgery. The CD values were then analyzed and compared between the groups. We measured three main layers in depth and four different concentric zones at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively.

RESULTS

In the DMEK group, total CD significantly decreased from 38.02 ± 10.21 grayscale units (GSU) to 31.13 ± 9.25 GSU (P < 0.01) between the first and the sixth month postoperative. In the DSAEK group, we found significant changes only between the first and three months after surgery (from 42.62 ± 9.31 GSU to 38.71 ± 10.53 GSU (P < 0.01). Regarding the concentric zones, CD in the DMEK group significantly decreased in the central zone from 33.55 ± 12.07 GSU to 30.63 ± 10.15 GSU (P < 0.01) and significantly increased in the periphery from 30.63 ± 10.15 GSU to 36.72 ± 9.37 GSU, (P < 0.01). The DSAEK group showed no changes in the central zone (from 36.91 ± 13.80 GSU to 36.14 ± 11.47 GSU, P = 0.52) and CD significantly increased in the periphery (41.91 ± 9.28 GSU, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

When comparing CD values in DMEK versus DSAEK, we found no differences by layers or at central-paracentral concentric zones, although CD differences in the peripheral zones were statistically significant. This finding may be attributed to the thicker graft at periphery with a delayed clearance and less anatomical interphase in DSAEK.

Mediators of Visual Acuity in Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty and Ultrathin Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate mediators of visual acuity in ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) compared with Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

METHODS

This was a prespecified secondary analysis of the Descemet Endothelial Thickness Comparison Trial, a prospective, randomized controlled trial comparing UT-DSAEK with DMEK. Subjects with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy or pseudophakic bullous keratopathy presenting to 2 academic centers were enrolled and randomized to either UT-DSAEK (n = 25 eyes) or DMEK (n = 25 eyes). Higher order aberrations (HOAs) and corneal densitometry were measured with Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months.

RESULTS

The posterior corneal surface at the 6.0-mm optical zone had significantly less total HOAs (P <0.001) in the DMEK group compared with UT-DSAEK at 24 months. Anterior and posterior corneal densitometry improved from baseline to 24 months for both UT-DSAEK and DMEK, but there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. Corneal densitometry and posterior HOAs were both associated with best-corrected visual acuity (P <0.05). DMEK had 1.3 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution better visual acuity compared with UT-DSAEK at 24 months. Approximately 64% of this effect was mediated through posterior HOAs, whereas none was mediated through anterior HOAs or densitometry.

CONCLUSIONS

Decreased posterior HOAs mediate better visual acuity and account for improved vision after DMEK compared with UT-DSAEK. Corneal light scatter as measured by densitometry is similar between UT-DSAEK and DMEK, indicating that the increased thickness and stromal-stromal interface in UT-DSAEK do not significantly affect visual acuity.

Scheimpflug Corneal Densitometry Patterns at the Graft-Host Interface in DMEK and DSAEK: A 12-Month Longitudinal Comparative Study

BACKGROUND

To compare corneal densitometry (CD) patterns at the graft-host interface between Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK). Corneal densitometry is a quantitative assessment that objectively evaluates corneal clarity and optical quality by measuring the light backscatter from the cornea.

METHODS

Fifty-one eyes that received DMEK or DSAEK surgery for corneal endothelium dysfunction were evaluated. The primary endpoint included CD patterns at the graft-host interface, which were assessed by the Pentacam HR device at the center point of the corneal horizontal meridian (CDcentral), and at six points on the central circumference of the cornea (with a total diameter of 4 mm) (CDI,II,III,IV,V,VI). Secondary endpoints included the best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), central corneal thickness (CCT), and graft thickness (GT). All of the evaluations were performed at follow-up appointments one, three, six and twelve months after the procedure.

RESULTS

DMEK showed a significant overall CD reduction of -7.9 ± 8.5 grayscale unit (GSU) compared to DSAEK (p < 0.001). In addition, the DMEK group showed significantly lower CDCentral,I,II,III,IV,V,VI values at follow-up appointments one, three, six and twelve months after the procedure compared to the DSAEK group (p < 0.001). BCDVA, CCT and GT were in favor of the DMEK group with a mean value of 0.39 ± 0.35 LogMar, 552.2 ± 71.1 µm and 11.03 ± 1.4 µm, respectively (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

CD patterns at the graft-host interface seem to be different depending on the endothelial keratoplasty procedure. This provides specific insight into CD changes in this critical region of surgery, which may provide a better understanding of the postoperative evolution of these patients.

A Comparison of the Corneal Thickness Following Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty and Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty

PURPOSE

To compare the central corneal thickness before and after Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), and to evaluate the recipient corneal thickness following DSAEK.

METHODS

The corneal thickness was compared between two groups of eyes following DMEK and DSAEK, performed by a single surgeon between 2015 and 2017. We evaluated the recipient corneal thickness and central corneal thickness pre- and postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Recipient corneal thickness was defined as the corneal thickness without graft thickness.

RESULTS

We included DMEK and DSAEK eyes (n = 26 each), which were similar in terms of their etiologies. Preoperatively, there was no significant difference in the central corneal thickness between the groups (DSAEK, median [interquartile range]: 721 [606.5 to 847.8] µm; and DMEK: 690 [618 to 722.3] µm; p = 0.30). Despite the tendency of the central corneal thickness to be significantly greater (p < .01) at 6 months following DSAEK (619.5 [607.8 to 661.3] µm) compared with that following DMEK (497.5 [475.8 to 525.3] µm), there was no significant difference at 6 months between the recipient corneal thickness following DSAEK (488.5 [443.8 to 515] µm) and central corneal thickness following DMEK (p = 0.54).

CONCLUSIONS

DSAEK eyes display a similar tendency of stromal thinning as DMEK eyes.

[Risk factors for failure of pre-cut eye bank UT-DSAEK grafts]

INTRODUCTION

The main risk factors for graft failure in penetrating keratoplasty are well known. However, few studies have examined donor characteristics or more precise data on endothelial keratoplasty.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a retrospective, single-center study at the Nantes University Hospital, aiming to identify factors predictive of one-year success or failure of eye bank UT-DSAEK endothelial keratoplasty grafts prepared between May 2016 and October 2018. The outcome measure was success or failure at 12months post keratoplasty.

RESULTS

One hundred and five grafts were included: 93 successes and 12 failures at 12months. The failure rate was higher in 2016 compared to 2017 and 2018. The characteristics associated with higher failure rate were elderly donor, shorter time between harvesting and grafting, lower endothelial cell density, significant pre-graft endothelial cell loss, re-graft for Fuchs dystrophy, history of corneal transplant.

DISCUSSION

Our results are consistent with those in the literature. However, some factors, such as the type of corneal harvesting or pre-graft endothelial cell loss, were not found. UT-DSAEK has demonstrated better results than DSAEK, but still appears to be somewhat inferior to DMEK.

CONCLUSION

The main factor for graft failure in our study was an early re-graft within 12months. However, the low incidence of graft failure limits interpretation of these results.

Mediators of the Effect of Corneal Cross-Linking on Visual Acuity for Fungal Ulcers: A Prespecified Secondary Analysis From the Cross-Linking-Assisted Infection Reduction Trial

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to determine whether astigmatism or corneal scarring is mediating the reduced visual acuity among patients with fungal keratitis randomized to corneal cross-linking (CXL).

DESIGN

This was a prespecified exploratory outcome from an outcome-masked, 2 × 2 factorial design, randomized controlled clinical trial.

STUDY PARTICIPANTS

Consecutive patients presented with moderate vision loss from a smear-positive fungal ulcer at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India.

INTERVENTION

Study eyes were randomized to one of 4 treatment combinations using an adaptive randomization protocol. The treatment arms included (1) topical natamycin 5% alone, (2) topical natamycin 5% plus CXL, (3) topical amphotericin B 0.15% alone, and (4) topical amphotericin 0.15% plus CXL. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), contact lens over-refraction, and scar size and depth as measured by a masked study ophthalmologist using a standardized protocol were recorded at 3 months. Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging was also obtained at 3 months.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

BSCVA and contact lens over-refraction, infiltrate and/or scar size and depth, total astigmatism of the front and back of the cornea, total lower-order and higher-order aberrations of the anterior and posterior cornea, and total densitometry of the anterior, central, and posterior stroma were recorded. We performed a mediation analysis looking at the proportion of the effect of CXL on BSCVA that was mediated through scar size, scar depth, astigmatism and density.

RESULTS

BSCVA at 3 months was available for 99 of 111 patients (89%) who had a mean of 0.82-LogMAR (SD 0.68). Three-month infiltrate and/or scar size ( P < 0.001), depth ( P < 0.001), and densitometry ( P = 0.001) were statistically significant predictors of 3-month BSCVA. Astigmatism seemed to mediate 23% of the effect of CXL on BSCVA, whereas scar size mediated 23%, scar depth 17%, and densitometry 7%.

CONCLUSIONS

Corneal scarring and astigmatism are mediators of worse visual acuity after cross-linking in fungal keratitis. Corneal densitometry may be a helpful cornea-specific variable for clinicians and researchers in determining the effect of corneal scarring on visual acuity in specific patients and as an objective study outcome.

Loss of Corneal Nerves and Corneal Haze in Patients with Fuchs' Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy with the Transcription Factor 4 Gene Trinucleotide Repeat Expansion

Objective

Seventy percent of Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) cases are caused by an intronic trinucleotide repeat expansion in the transcription factor 4 gene (TCF4). The objective of this study was to characterize the corneal subbasal nerve plexus and corneal haze in patients with FECD with (RE+) and without the trinucleotide repeat expansion (RE-) and to assess the correlation of these parameters with disease severity.

Design

Cross-sectional, single-center study.

Participants

Fifty-two eyes of 29 subjects with a modified Krachmer grade of FECD severity from 1 to 6 were included in the study. Fifteen of the 29 subjects carried an expanded TCF4 allele length of ≥ 40 cytosine-thymine-guanine repeats (RE+).

Main Outcomes Measures

In vivo confocal microscopy assessments of corneal nerve fiber length (CNFL), corneal nerve branch density, corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD), and anterior corneal stromal backscatter (haze); Scheimpflug tomography densitometry measurements of haze in anterior, central, and posterior corneal layers.

Results

Using confocal microscopy, we detected a negative correlation between FECD severity and both CNFL and CNFD in the eyes of RE+ subjects (Spearman ρ = -0.45, P = 0.029 and ρ = -0.62, P = 0.0015, respectively) but not in the eyes of RE- subjects. Additionally, CNFD negatively correlated with the repeat length of the expanded allele in the RE+ subjects (Spearman ρ = -0.42, P = 0.038). We found a positive correlation between anterior stromal backscatter and severity in both the RE+ and RE- groups (ρ = 0.60, P = 0.0023 and ρ = 0.44, P = 0.024, respectively). The anterior, central, and posterior Scheimpflug densitometry measurements also positively correlated with severity in both the RE+ and RE- groups (P = 5.5 × 10^-5, 2.5 × 10^-4, and 2.9 × 10^-4, respectively, after adjusting for the expansion status in a pooled analysis. However, for patients with severe FECD (Krachmer grades 5 and 6), the posterior densitometry measurements were higher in the RE+ group than in the RE- group (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

Loss of corneal nerves in FECD supports the classification of the TCF4 trinucleotide repeat expansion disorder as a neurodegenerative disease. Haze in the anterior, central, and posterior cornea correlate with severity, irrespective of the genotype. Quantitative assessments of corneal nerves and corneal haze may be useful to gauge and monitor FECD disease severity in RE+ patients.

Long-term Outcomes in Fellow Eyes Comparing DSAEK and DMEK for Treatment of Fuchs Corneal Dystrophy

PURPOSE

To compare the long-term results of Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in fellow eyes for treatment of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy.

METHODS

This study is a 2-centered, retrospective case series of 64 patients (128 eyes) with DSAEK followed by DMEK. The main outcomes measured were best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and duration of time to achieve BSCVA as well as eye preference.

RESULTS

Preoperative median logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) BSCVA was similar in eyes receiving DMEK 0.36 ± 0.26 and DSAEK 0.42 ± 0.34 (P = .266). The average follow-up time needed for the DMEK eyes to achieve BSCVA was faster than that of DSAEK (277 days vs 490 days, P = .0014). With long-term follow-up, the BSCVA of the DMEK eyes [0.09 ± 0.10 logMAR] and DSAEK eyes [0.11 ± 0.16 logMAR] did not show a statistically significant difference (P = .069). Twenty-two of the 64 preferred the DMEK eye, 17 patients preferred the DSAEK eye (P = .423), and 25 patients did not have a preference. In the DMEK group, the average spherical equivalent was -0.08 compared with the DSAEK group at 0.06 (P = .2854).

CONCLUSION

In our fellow eye study with long-term follow-up, DMEK and DSAEK had comparable levels of BSCVA and patient satisfaction. The DMEK eyes reached their BSCVA sooner, whereas the DSAEK eyes improved over a longer time frame. A greater number of patients had 20/25 and 20/20 vision in the DMEK group; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Comparative Analysis of Corneal Parameters in Swept-Source Imaging between DMEK and UT-DSAEK Eyes

Background: The need to provide a comparative analysis of corneal parameter changes compared to their preoperative values between Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) patients. Methods: The study included 24 eyes after UT-DSAEK and 24 eyes after DMEK. Visual acuity, endothelial cell count (ECC), central corneal thickness (CCT), mean keratometry (MK), mean astigmatism (MA), astigmatism asymmetry (AA) and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were assessed at baseline and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the surgery. Results: From the 3rd month post operation, ECC was higher in the DMEK eyes than in the UT-DSAEK eyes (p = 0.01). In a bivariate analysis that was adjusted for age, DMEK was associated with a smaller decrease in posterior MK at the 1-month (β = −0.49, p = 0.002), 3-month (β = −0.50, p < 0.001), 6-month (β = −0.58, p < 0.001) and 12-month (β = −0.49, p < 0.001) follow-up visits. There were no significant differences in changes in anterior or combined surface MK throughout the observation period. Accordingly, no significant differences in changes in MA, AA or HOAs compared to the baseline values were identified between the eyes after DMEK and UT-DSAEK at any follow-up time point. Conclusions: UT-DSAEK seemed to be an easier and safer technique than DMEK while maintaining similar outcomes regarding irregular astigmatism and total keratometry values.

Lower Corneal Haze and Aberrations in Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty Versus Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty in Fellow Eyes for Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy

PURPOSE

To investigate the long-term corneal changes in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy contributing to superior postoperative visual outcomes after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) compared with Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK).

METHODS

Using retrospective analysis, we evaluated 9 patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy who underwent DSAEK in 1 eye and DMEK in the fellow eye. Patients were genotyped for the triplet repeat expansion in the TCF4 gene and imaged using optical coherence tomography, Scheimpflug imaging, and in vivo confocal microscopy through focusing.

RESULTS

Eight of 9 subjects were genotyped, and all were found to harbor the triplet repeat expansion. The average time between endothelial keratoplasty and imaging was 76 ± 22 and 37 ± 9 months after DSAEK and DMEK, respectively. The mean best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (logMAR) was 0.04 ± 0.05 and 0.11 ± 0.03 in the DMEK eyes versus DSAEK eyes (P = 0.02), respectively. Posterior corneal higher order aberrations were less in the DMEK eyes compared with fellow DSAEK eyes (0.25 ± 0.06 and 0.66 ± 0.25, respectively, P ≤ 0.01). Using confocal microscopy through focusing, we found that the persistent anterior stromal haze was correlated between the right and left eyes (R = 0.73, P ≤ 0.05), but total stromal backscattering was higher for the DSAEK eyes (P ≤ 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

DSAEK inherently results in higher total stromal backscattering (haze) compared with DMEK because of the addition of stromal tissue. Lower higher order aberrations of the posterior cornea and lower total stromal backscattering (haze) may both contribute to superior visual outcomes after DMEK compared with DSAEK.

To compare corneal confocal microscopy of eyes with Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy after two different endothelial surgeries

PURPOSE

To study the features of corneal confocal microscopy of eyes with Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) after successful Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) versus Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

METHODS

Thirty-two eyes affected by FECD with corneal oedema requiring a corneal graft were treated with DSAEK (15 eyes) or DMEK (17 eyes). All patients underwent in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCCM) at 6 months postoperatively. We evaluated preoperative and postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and the correlation with IVCCM characteristics.

RESULTS

Using IVCCM, Z-scan curve analysis showed similar subepithelial reflectivity peaks between the two groups (DSAEK 1256 SU ± 514 vs DMEK 1118 SU ± 408, p = 0.411), while the interface reflectivity was significantly higher in the DMEK group (1511 SU ± 357) than in the DSAEK group (1029 SU ± 413, p = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

Comparing the corneal confocal microscopic characteristics after DMEK with those after DSAEK and their correlation with visual outcome at 6 months, we hypothesized that the presence of a third reflectivity peak in the Z-scan curves of DSAEK patients could justify the poorer visual outcome with this endothelial surgery than with DMEK.

Corneal endothelial dysfunction: Evolving understanding and treatment options

The cornea is exquisitely designed to protect the eye while transmitting and focusing incoming light. Precise control of corneal hydration by the endothelial cell layer that lines the inner surface of the cornea is required for optimal transparency, and endothelial dysfunction or damage can result in corneal edema and visual impairment. Advances in corneal transplantation now allow selective replacement of dysfunctional corneal endothelium, providing rapid visual rehabilitation. A series of technique improvements have minimized complications and various adaptations allow use even in eyes with complicated anatomy. While selective endothelial keratoplasty sets a very high standard for safety and efficacy, a shortage of donor corneas in many parts of the world restricts access, prompting a search for alternatives. Clinical trials are underway to evaluate the potential for self-recovery after removal of dysfunctional central endothelium in patients with healthy peripheral endothelium. Various approaches to using cultured human corneal endothelial cells are also in clinical trials; these aim to multiply cells from a single donor cornea for use in potentially hundreds of patients. Pre-clinical studies are underway with induced pluripotent stem cells, endothelial stem cell regeneration, gene therapy, anti-sense oligonucleotides, and various biologic/pharmacologic approaches designed to treat, prevent, or retard corneal endothelial dysfunction. The availability of more therapeutic options will hopefully expand access around the world while also allowing treatment to be more precisely tailored to each individual patient.

Five-Year Follow-up of First 11 Patients Undergoing Injection of Cultured Corneal Endothelial Cells for Corneal Endothelial Failure

PURPOSE

To report the safety and efficacy of a novel cell injection therapy using cultured human corneal endothelial cells (hCECs) for endothelial failure conditions via the report of the long-term 5-year postoperative clinical data from a first-in-humans clinical trial group.

DESIGN

Prospective observational study.

PARTICIPANTS

This study involved 11 eyes of 11 patients with pseudophakic endothelial failure conditions who underwent hCEC injection therapy between December 2013 and December 2014.

METHODS

All patients underwent follow-up examinations at 1 week, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks and 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years after surgery. Specific corneal endothelial cell parameters (i.e., corneal endothelial cell density [ECD], coefficient of variation of area, and percentage of hexagonal cells) and central corneal thickness, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) on a Landolt C eye chart, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were recorded.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The primary outcome was the change in central ECD after cell injection therapy, and the secondary outcome was corneal thickness, BCVA, and IOP during the 5-year-postoperative follow-up period.

RESULTS

At 5 years after surgery, normal corneal endothelial function was restored in 10 of the 11 eyes, the mean ± standard deviation central corneal ECD was 1257 ± 467 cells/mm² (range, 601-2067 cells/mm²), BCVA improved significantly in 10 treated eyes, the mean visual acuity changed from 0.876 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution before surgery to 0.046 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution after surgery, and no major adverse reactions directly related to the hCEC injection therapy were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings in this study confirmed the safety and efficacy of cultured hCEC injection therapy for up to 5 years after surgery.
