Abstract
Treatment of late-onset neonatal staphylococcal sepsis is sometimes challenging with feared side effects of vancomycin, increasing minimal inhibitory concentrations and questions about catheter management. In case of failure, ceftaroline was administered as a compassionate treatment in 16 infants (gestational age of less than 32 weeks and less than 28 postnatal days), whose first-line treatment failed. We report 11 successes and no severe adverse drug reactions. Larger data are required to confirm these encouraging results.

Abstract
Ceftaroline fosamil is a fifth-generation cephalosporin approved as a treatment for adults and children with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections. However, its pharmacokinetics have not been fully evaluated in children with renal impairment. This study aimed to propose proper ceftaroline dosages optimized for the renally impaired pediatric population using physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. A PBPK model of ceftaroline was established and verified to simulate its disposition in the healthy population and renally impaired adults and to predict the exposure in renally impaired pediatric patients. Consistency was confirmed between simulated and observed data after intravenous administration of various ceftaroline regimens; fold errors were within the 2-fold error range. Among 6-year-old children, healthy subjects had 1.5-fold, 2-fold, and 2.6-fold lower areas under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUCs) than the moderate, severe, and end-stage renally impaired patient groups, respectively; among 1-year-old children, healthy subjects had 1.5-fold, 2.1-fold, and 2.5-fold lower AUCs than the respective renally impaired patient groups; among 1-month-old children, healthy subjects had 1.5-fold, 1.8-fold, and 2.2-fold lower AUCs than the respective renally impaired patient groups. The proposed dosage should be adjusted to 8, 6, and 5 mg/kg every 8 hours for patients aged ≥2 years to <18 years (≤33 kg) with moderate, severe, and end-stage renal impairment, respectively; 5, 4, and 3 mg/kg every 8 hours for patients aged 2 months to <2 years with moderate, severe, and end-stage renal impairment, respectively; 4, 3.5, and 2.5 mg/kg every 8 hours for patients 0 to <2 months of age with moderate, severe, and end-stage renal impairment, respectively. Furthermore, pharmacodynamic investigations demonstrated that adequate antimicrobial effects were attained at the proposed doses in 3 age groups. Hence, our PBPK model can be an effective tool to support ceftaroline dosage proposals for renally impaired pediatric patients.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AN OBJECTIVE Our objective is to report a paediatric case of high-level ceftaroline resistance without previous ceftaroline exposure. CASE DESCRIPTION A 20-month-old, 12 kg, female with invasive MRSA infection presented with high-level ceftaroline resistance with no previous ceftaroline exposure. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION To our knowledge, our case is the first report of high-level ceftaroline resistance evident in a paediatric patient with invasive infection due to MRSA, without history of prior ceftaroline exposure. This case illustrates the importance of weighing the risk of resistance with the benefits of use when starting therapy empirically prior to susceptibility results, even in patients without previous drug exposure.

Abstract
Acute bacterial skin and soft tissue infections (aSSTIs) are a large group of diseases that can involve exclusively the skin or also the underlying subcutaneous tissues, fascia, or muscles. Despite differences in the localization and severity, all these diseases are due mainly to Gram-positive bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. aSSTI incidence increased considerably in the early years of this century due to the emergence and diffusion of community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA). Despite the availability of antibiotics effective against CA-MRSA, problems of resistance to these drugs and risks of significant adverse events have emerged. In this paper, the present knowledge on the potential role new antibiotics for the treatment of pediatric aSSTIs is discussed. The most recent molecules that have been licensed for the treatment of aSSTIs include ozenoxacin (OZ), ceftaroline fosamil (CF), dalbavancin (DA), oritavancin (OR), tedizolid (TD), delafloxacin (DL), and omadacycline (OM). However, only OZ and CF have been licensed for use in children with aSSTIs, although the superiority of these antibiotics to those routinely used for the treatment of aSSTIs should be further demonstrated. Waiting for additional studies, OZ and CF should be prescribed for aSSTI treatment in the presence of the potential failure of old molecules.

Abstract
Pharmacokinetic data regarding ceftaroline fosamil (CPT) penetration into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are limited to a rabbit model (15% inflamed) and adult case reports. We describe serum and CSF CPT concentrations in a 21-year-old, 34.8 kg female, medically complex patient presented with a 4-day history of fevers (Tmax 39.2°C), tachypnea, tachycardia, fatigue, and a 1-week history of pus and blood draining from the ventriculopleural (VPL) shunt. A head CT and an ultrasound of the neck revealed septated complex fluid collection surrounding the shunt. Therapy was initiated with vancomycin and ceftriaxone. Blood and CSF cultures from hospital day (HD) 1 were positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with a CPT MIC of 0.5 mg/L and a vancomycin MIC range of 0.5 to 1 mg/L. On HD 3, CPT was added. On HD 7, simultaneous serum (69.4, 44, and 30.2 mg/L) and CSF (1.7, 2.3, and 2.3 mg/L) concentrations were obtained at 0.25, 1.5, and 4.75 hours from the end of an infusion. Based on these concentrations, CPT CSF penetration ratio ranged from 2.4% to 7.6%. After addition of CPT, the blood and CSF cultures remained negative on a regimen of vancomycin plus CPT. On HD 14, a new left-sided VPL shunt was placed. The patient continued on CPT for a period of 7 days after the new VPL shunt placement. This case demonstrated CPT CSF penetration in a range of 2.4% to 7.6%, approximately half of the rabbit model. This allowed for CSF concentrations at least 50% free time > 4 to 6× MIC of the dosing interval with a dosing regimen of 600 mg IV every 8 hours in a 34.8 kg chronic patient and resulted in a successful clinical outcome with no identified adverse outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives: This meta-analysis aims to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of ceftaroline in treating acute bacterial infections – community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and skin and skin structure infection (SSSI) in pediatric patients. Methods: The Pubmed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov. and the Cochrane databases were searched up to December 31, 2018. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating ceftaroline and other comparators in the treatment of acute bacterial infection in pediatric patients were included. The primary outcome was the clinical cure rate and the secondary outcome was the risk of adverse event. Results: Three RCTs were included. Overall, ceftaroline had a clinical cure rate at end of therapy (EOT) and test of cure (TOC) similar to comparators in the treatment of acute bacterial infection (at EOT, OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 0.88–4.25, I2=0%, and at TOC, OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 0.64–2.91, I2=14%). In addition, ceftaroline had a clinical failure rate at EOT and TOC similar to comparators in the treatment of acute bacterial infection (at EOT, OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.22–1.76, I2=0%, and at TOC, OR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.24–1.91, I2=0%). No significant differences were found for the risk of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAE) in all and different degrees between ceftaroline and comparators (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.37–1.78, I2=56%). The risks of TEAE and severe adverse events related to study drug were similar between ceftaroline and comparators (TEAE related to study drug, OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.52–1.82, I2=0%, severe adverse event related to study drug, OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 0.22–5.44, I2=22%). Conclusions: The clinical efficacy of ceftaroline is as good as comparator therapy in the treatment of acute bacterial infections – CAP and SSSI, and this antibiotic is well tolerated as the comparators.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this review is to describe the outcomes of patients treated with ceftaroline in the non-Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved indication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in both pediatric and adult populations. DATA SOURCES A systematic overview was conducted by searching PubMed, Medline, and The Cochrane Library up to January 2019. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION All English-language clinical trials and case reports related to the efficacy of ceftaroline in new, not-yet-approved FDA indications in MRSA infections in pediatric or adult populations. DATA SYNTHESIS In the case of MRSA bacteremia (MRSAB) infections, three different randomized studies in pediatric patients showed effectiveness of ceftaroline. When used in the case of adult populations with MRSA bacteremia, a small trial of 16 patients showed 50% clinical success in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections versus 63% clinical success in patients with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. Another case series of six refractory case reports showed 50% clinical success of ceftaroline in patients with MRSA. CONCLUSIONS Although there are few case reports and limited data to date, ceftaroline fosamil should continue to be studied as an alternative therapy in MRSA infections in both pediatric and adult populations. Clinical success rates of ceftaroline were, in most cases, considered high when treating patients with MRSA infection. More clinical trials need to be studied. In the specific case of MRSA bacteremia, the treatment options remain few and ceftaroline should be extensively studied for the salvage treatment of MRSAB.

Abstract
Persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia can be difficult to treat, with growing adult literature supporting the combination of ceftaroline and daptomycin for these patients. Here, we report a pediatric patient with persistent MRSA bacteremia with associated cellulitis, fasciitis, myositis, and a deep venous thrombosis causing septic pulmonary emboli. After being unable to clear the bacteremia on vancomycin and then daptomycin monotherapy, the bacteremia cleared quickly with rapid clinical improvement after the addition of ceftaroline to daptomycin. In support of this case, we also review the adult literature supporting treatment with this combination of antibiotics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the ceftaroline pharmacokinetics in critically ill children treated for suspected or confirmed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, including blood stream infection and describe the microbiological and clinical outcomes. DESIGN Retrospective electronic medical record review. SETTINGS Free-standing tertiary/quaternary pediatric children's hospital. PATIENTS Critically ill children receiving ceftaroline monotherapy or combination therapy for suspected or confirmed methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections in the PICU. INTERVENTION None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Seven patients, three females (43%), and four males (57%), accounted for 33 ceftaroline samples for therapeutic drug management. A median of four samples for therapeutic drug management was collected per patient (range, 2-9 samples). The median age was 7 years (range, 1-13 yr) with a median weight of 25.5 kg (range, 12.6-40.1 kg). Six of seven patients (86%) demonstrated an increase in volume of distribution, five of seven patients (71%) demonstrated an increase in clearance, and 100% of patients demonstrated a shorter half-life estimate as compared with the package insert estimate. Six of seven patients (85.7%) had documented methicillin-resistant S. aureus growth from a normally sterile site with five of six (83.3%) having documented BSI, allowing six total patients to be evaluated for the secondary objective of microbiological and clinical response. All six patients achieved a positive microbiological and clinical response for a response rate of 100%. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest the pharmacokinetics of ceftaroline in PICU patients is different than healthy pediatric and adult patients, most notably a faster clearance and larger volume of distribution. A higher mg/kg dose and a more frequent dosing interval for ceftaroline may be needed in PICU patients to provide appropriate pharmacodynamic exposures. Larger pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and interventional treatment trials in the PICU population are warranted.

Abstract
We evaluated trends in Staphylococcus aureus antimicrobial susceptibility in U.S. hospitals in the 2010-2016 period. A total of 21,056 clinical isolates from 42 medical centers were tested for susceptibility by broth microdilution methods. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) rates decreased from 50.0% (in 2010) to 42.2% (in 2016). Susceptibility to erythromycin, levofloxacin, and clindamycin increased slightly, whereas susceptibility to ceftaroline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline remained stable. Ceftaroline retained potent activity against methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and MRSA (97.2% susceptible) with no marked variations.

Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates (2,614) were collected from patients at 135 U.S. Medical Centers during 2014. Isolates were evaluated for multidrug resistance to penicillin, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and levofloxacin. A single isolate (853008) demonstrated a ceftaroline nonsusceptible minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value, and it was subjected to molecular characterization. Ceftaroline (MIC50/90, ≤0.015/0.12 μg/ml) was eightfold more potent than ceftriaxone (MIC50/90, ≤0.06/1 μg/ml) against all isolates. For multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates (28.8% of tested strains), ceftaroline (MIC50/90, 0.06/0.25 μg/ml; 99.9% susceptible) was the most active agent tested, being eightfold more active than ceftriaxone (MIC50/90, 0.25/2 μg/ml; 81.5% susceptible at MIC, ≤1 μg/ml) and 16-fold more active than penicillin (MIC50/90, 0.25/4 μg/ml; 78.5% susceptible at MIC, ≤2 μg/ml). Isolate 853008 was a single locus variant of sequence type 377 and serotype 35B. It had multiple substitutions in the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), mainly PBP2x, when compared with reference sequences from the R6 strain. Isolate 853008 showed 31 amino acid alterations in MurM. The in vitro data presented here confirm that ceftaroline potency against S. pneumoniae to be higher than other β-lactams, including against those isolates demonstrating ceftriaxone nonsusceptible and MDR phenotypes.

Abstract
Ceftaroline fosamil has recently received US Food and Drug Administration approval for treatment of acute bacterial skin/skin structure infections (SSSIs), including those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia for pediatric patients ≥2 months old. We evaluated the potency and spectrum of ceftaroline and comparators when tested against community-acquired respiratory tract infection (CARTI) and SSSI pathogens from pediatric patients. A total of 3141 consecutive, unique pediatric patient isolates of clinical significance (1460 CARTI and 1681 SSSI isolates) were collected from 29 US medical centers and tested for susceptibility to ceftaroline and comparators by broth microdilution methods. The organism collection included Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 754), Haemophilus influenzae (487), S. aureus (1399), β-hemolytic streptococci (214), Enterobacteriaceae (112), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (58), Klebsiella spp. (39), Escherichia coli (26) and miscellaneous other bacteria (52). Susceptibility results were analyzed according to patient age as follows: ≤1, 2-5, 6-12 and 13-17 years old. Overall, 99%-100% of Gram-positive isolates and H. influenzae were susceptible to ceftaroline according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute clinical breakpoint criteria. Ceftaroline exhibited potent in vitro activity against bacterial pathogens from CARTI and SSSI recently (2012-2014) collected from pediatric patients in US medical centers. Ceftaroline was particularly active against methicillin-resistant S. aureus from SSSI ([minimum inhibitory concentration for 50% and 90% of isolates (MIC50/90,)] and ceftriaxone-nonsusceptible isolates of S. pneumoniae from CARTI (MIC50/90, 0.25/0.5 μg/mL; 98.3% susceptible).

Abstract
Ceftaroline, the active form of the prodrug ceftaroline fosamil, is approved for use in adults with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) or acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in the United States and for similar indications in Europe. Pharmacokinetic (PK) data from 5 pediatric (birth to <18 years) studies of ceftaroline fosamil were combined with PK data from adults to update a population PK model for ceftaroline and ceftaroline fosamil. This model, based on a data set including 305 children, was used to conduct simulations to estimate ceftaroline exposures and percentage of time that free drug concentrations were above the minimum inhibitory concentration (%fT>MIC) for pediatric dose regimens. With dose regimens of 8 mg/kg every 8 hours (q8h) in children aged 2 months to <2 years and 12 mg/kg (up to a maximum of 400 mg) q8h in children aged 2 years to <18 years or 600 mg q12h in children aged 12 to <18 years, >90% of children were predicted to achieve a target of 36% fT>MIC at an MIC of 2 mg/L, and >97% were predicted to achieve 44% fT>MIC at an MIC of 1 mg/L. Thus, high PK/pharmacodynamic target attainment would be maintained in children for targets associated with 1-log kill of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The predicted ceftaroline exposures for these dose regimens were similar to those in adults given 600 mg q12h ceftaroline fosamil. This work contributed to the approval of dose regimens for children aged 2 months to <18 years by the FDA and EMA, which are presented.

Abstract
S. pneumoniae infection remains a serious public health concern despite the availability of vaccines covering up to 23 of more than 94 known serotypes. The purpose of the present study was to monitor recent serotype distribution data. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Reviews and Ingenta databases were searched. Serotype data covering invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and non-IPD were extracted from articles published from March 2014 to March 2015. Fifty-nine studies presented pneumococcal serotype prevalence by specific age categories. Most prevalent serotypes not covered by pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) were as follows: 15B, 22F, 15A, 23A among children under the age of 7 y with IPD; among adults with IPD: 22F, 11A, 10A, 38 in the 65 y and older age group; 12F, 9N, 8 in the 50-64 year-old age group and 12F, 8, 6C, 16F in the 15-59 age group. Geographic variations in serotype distribution highlight the importance of monitoring evolving pneumococcal serotype prevalence after pneumococcal vaccine implementation.

Abstract
Intravenous ceftaroline fosamil (Zinforo™), a prodrug that is rapidly converted to its active metabolite ceftaroline, is approved for use in adults and children (from 2 months of age) with complicated skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTIs) or community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In several multinational trials, ceftaroline fosamil was an effective and generally well tolerated treatment in adult and paediatric patients with cSSTIs or CAP. In the phase 3 CANVAS trials, ceftaroline fosamil treatment was noninferior to vancomycin plus aztreonam in adults with cSSTIs. Based on a meta-analysis of three similarly designed, phase 3 trials (FOCUS 1, FOCUS 2 and an Asian trial), ceftaroline fosamil treatment was superior to ceftriaxone in adults with CAP of Pneumonia Outcomes Research Teams (PORT) risk class III or IV. Ceftaroline fosamil was also associated with high clinical cure rates in hospitalized children (aged 2 months to 17 years) with cSSTIs or CAP. With its broad spectrum of in vitro activity against clinically relevant Gram-positive [including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates] and Gram-negative pathogens implicated in cSSTIs and CAP, ceftaroline fosamil is an important treatment option for cSSTI and CAP in adults and children from the age of 2 months.

Abstract
Among 8437 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates collected from 143 medical centers in the United States (2012-2014), 7116 and 1321 were reported as community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) MRSA, respectively. CA-/HA-MRSA were most often isolated from patients with skin and skin structure infections (SSSI; 68.4/26.9%), pneumonia (13.7/49.0%) and bacteremia (10.0/17.7%). Overall, susceptibility rates were generally lower among HA-MRSA compared to CA-MRSA strains, especially for clindamycin (44.6 vs. 66.1%) and levofloxacin (21.4 vs. 35.5%). Also, susceptibility rates were lower for these two compounds among isolates from pneumonia compared to SSSI and bacteremia. Ceftaroline was broadly active against 98.0% of CA-MRSA and 94.3% of HA-MRSA (MIC50/90, 1μg/mL for both; no resistant isolate) overall, with little variation among infection type subsets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ceftaroline has in vitro activity against bacterial isolates, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This is the first study to investigate ceftaroline fosamil in pediatric patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs). METHODS A multicenter, observer-blinded study (NCT01400867) in pediatric patients (2 months-17 years of age) with ABSSSIs. Patients were randomized 2:1 to receive intravenous (IV) ceftaroline fosamil or IV comparator (vancomycin or cefazolin, plus optional aztreonam) with optional switch to oral antibacterials from Day 4. Safety and clinical outcomes were assessed. RESULTS Of 163 enrolled patients, 159 received treatment. Treatment groups were comparable for baseline characteristics. Rates of study drug-related treatment-emergent adverse events were similar for ceftaroline fosamil [22% (23/106)] and comparator [23% (12/53)]. One serious adverse event, considered to be related to IV study drug, occurred in the ceftaroline fosamil group (hypersensitivity). In both the treatment groups, 85% (ceftaroline fosamil, 91/107 and comparator, 44/52) of the modified intent-to-treat population achieved early clinical response (≥20% reduction in infection area from baseline). Clinical cure rates at test-of-cure were high [ceftaroline fosamil, 94% (101/107) and comparator, 87% (45/52)]. For patients evaluated 8 to 15 days after the last dose of any antibiotic (IV or oral), from whom methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was initially isolated, a favorable microbiologic response (reflecting the efficacy of oral/IV therapy and capturing a relapse or reinfection) was achieved with ceftaroline fosamil [89% (16/18)] and comparator [57% (4/7)]. CONCLUSIONS Ceftaroline fosamil, with optional oral switch, was as well-tolerated and effective in pediatric patients with ABSSSIs as comparator therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The broad-spectrum cephalosporin ceftaroline, a metabolite of the prodrug ceftaroline fosamil, has shown in vitro activity against clinical isolates from pediatric patients. METHODS This multicenter, randomized, observer-blinded, active-controlled study (NCT01669980) assessed the safety and effectiveness of ceftaroline fosamil compared with ceftriaxone plus vancomycin in patients between 2 months and 17 years of age with complicated community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. Patients were randomized 3:1 (stratified by age cohort) to receive either ceftaroline fosamil or ceftriaxone plus vancomycin (comparator) as intravenous therapy for ≥3 days. Patients who met specific study criteria on or after Study Day 4 were permitted to switch to an oral study drug. Safety assessments were treatment-emergent adverse events, and the effectiveness of treatment was assessed by clinical and microbiologic outcomes. RESULTS The median duration of intravenous treatment was 9.0 (range, 3.0-19.0) days in the ceftaroline fosamil group (N=30) and 7.5 (5.0-13.0) days in the comparator group (N=10). At least one treatment-emergent adverse event was experienced by 12/30 patients (40%) in the ceftaroline fosamil group and 8/10 (80%) in the comparator group; most treatment-emergent adverse events in both groups were mild to moderate in intensity. Clinical response rates in the modified intent-to-treat population were 52% (15/29 patients) in the ceftaroline fosamil group and 67% in the comparator group (6/9); clinical stability at Study Day 4 was 21% (6/29) and 22% (2/9), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Ceftaroline fosamil was well tolerated and showed similar clinical response rates to ceftriaxone plus vancomycin in pediatric patients with complicated community-acquired bacterial pneumonia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) remains a major infection among children, despite the use of pneumococcal vaccination. Ceftaroline fosamil is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic with activity against many bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae (both penicillin-nonsusceptible and multidrug-resistant strains) and Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant S. aureus). This article describes the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of ceftaroline fosamil in the treatment of pediatric patients hospitalized with CABP, from a randomized, active-controlled, observer-blinded clinical study (registration number NCT01530763). METHODS Pediatric patients were stratified into 4 age cohorts and randomized (3:1) to receive either intravenous ceftaroline fosamil or ceftriaxone, with optional oral switch for a total treatment duration of 5-14 days. Enrollment was planned for 160 patients. Data collected included demographics, infection characteristics and pathogens. Treatment-emergent adverse events, clinical outcomes, and microbiologic responses were assessed. RESULTS Ceftaroline fosamil was well tolerated. Similar percentages of patients in the ceftaroline fosamil (55/121; 45%) and ceftriaxone (18/39; 46%) groups reported treatment-emergent adverse events. Coombs seroconversion was observed in 17% of patients in the ceftaroline fosamil group; however, no evidence of hemolytic anemia or hemolysis was found. No deaths were reported during the study. Ceftaroline fosamil had similar effectiveness to ceftriaxone, with high clinical cure rates at test-of-cure in the modified intent-to-treat population (94/107; 88% and 32/36; 89%, respectively). Three documented S. aureus infections were successfully treated in the ceftaroline group, including one caused by methicillin-resistant S. aureus. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that ceftaroline fosamil may be an important treatment option for pediatric patients hospitalized with CABP.
