Neck injuries among electric utility workers, 1995-2007

Impact of neck posture and insulating stick use on neck disability in Korean line workers: a cross-sectional study

Background

Occupational neck disability is a prevalent issue, especially among line workers, who are often exposed to elevated levels of cervical ergonomic stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of neck posture and insulating stick use on neck disability in a specific occupational group in Korea.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted among 483 line workers in Gwangju and Jeonnam, Korea. Data were collected using the Neck Disability Index, Cervical Degenerative Index, and a structured questionnaire focusing on demographic and occupational factors. Logistic regression analysis was applied to determine the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for neck posture and factors related to neck disability.

Results

Neck disability prevalence was 17.2% among the participants. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that factors related to neck disability included age over 60 years (adjusted OR: 3.08; 95% CI: 1.63-5.83), depression (adjusted OR: 8.33; 95% CI: 3.85-18.00), a history of cervical trauma (adjusted OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.04-4.40), and radiological degenerative changes in the cervical spine (adjusted OR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.26-4.33). In particular, the adjusted OR of neck disability among live-line workers was 2.10 (95% CI: 1.12-3.92) when compared with support workers (model 1). Other analysis models showed that use of insulating sticks for more than 10 hours per week (adjusted OR: 2.46; 95% CI: 1.32-4.61) and higher neck extension (adjusted OR: 2.98; 95% CI: 1.14-3.46) were significant work-related risk factors (model 2,3).

Conclusions

Neck posture, age, depression, cervical trauma history, degenerative changes in the cervical spine, and use of insulating sticks are significant risk factors for neck disability among line workers in Korea. These findings highlight the need to improve the working environment and reduce the burden of cervical ergonomic stress among line workers.

Trends in Catastrophic Occupational Incidents among Electrical Contractors, 2007-2013

This study used methodologies of descriptive and quantitative statistics to identify the contributing factors most affecting occupational accident outcomes among electrical contracting enterprises, given an accident occurred. Accident reports were collected from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's fatality and catastrophe database. To ensure the reliability of the data, the team manually codified more than 600 incidents through a comprehensive content analysis using injury-classification standards. Inclusive of both fatal and non-fatal injuries, the results showed that most accidents happened in nonresidential buildings, new construction, and small projects (i.e., $50,000 or less). The main source of injuries manifested in parts and materials (46%), followed by tools, instruments, and equipment (19%), and structure and surfaces (16%). The most frequent types of injuries were fractures (31%), electrocutions (27%), and electrical burns (14%); the main injured body parts were upper extremities (25%), head (23%), and body system (18%). Among non-fatal cases, falls (37%), exposure to electricity (36%), and contact with objects (19%) caused most injuries; among fatal cases, exposure to electricity was the leading cause of death (50%), followed by falls (28%) and contact with objects (19%). The analysis also investigated the impact of several accident factors on the degree of injuries and found significant effects from such factors such as project type, source of injury, cause of injury, injured part of body, nature of injury, and eventtype. In other words, the statistical probability of a fatal accident-given an accident occurrence-changes significantly based on the degree of these factors. The results of this study, as depicted in the proposed decision tree model, revealed that the most important factor for predicting the nature of injury (electrical or non-electrical) is: whether the source of injury is parts and materials; followed by whether the source of injury is tools, instruments, and equipment. In other words, in predicting (with a 94.31% accuracy) the nature of injury as electrical or non-electrical, whether the source of injury is parts and materials and whether the source of injury is tools, instruments, and equipment are very important. Seven decision rules were derived from the proposed decision tree model. Beyond these outcomes, the described methodology contributes to the accident-analysis body of knowledge by providing a framework for codifying data from accident reports to facilitate future analysis and modeling attempts to subsequently mitigate more injuries in other fields.

Injuries among electric power industry workers, 1995-2013

INTRODUCTION

Workers in the electric power industry face many risks of injury due to the high diversity of work tasks performed in potentially hazardous and unpredictable work environments.

METHOD

We calculated injury rates by age, sex, occupational group, and injury type among workers in the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Occupational Health and Safety Database (OHSD), which contains recordable injury, medical claims, and personnel data from 18 participating electric power companies from 1995 to 2013.

RESULTS

The OHSD includes a total of 63,193 injuries over 1,977,436 employee-years of follow-up, for an overall injury rate of 3.20 injuries per 100 employee-years. Annual injury rates steadily decreased from 1995 to 2000, increased sharply in 2001, and subsequently decreased to their lowest rate of 1.31 injuries per 100 employee-years in 2013. Occupations with the highest injury rates were welders (13.56 per 100 employee-years, 95% CI 12.74-14.37), meter readers (12.04 per 100 employee-years, 95% CI 11.77-12.31), and line workers (10.37 per 100 employee-years, 95% CI 10.19-10.56). Males had an overall higher injury rate compared to females (2.74 vs. 1.61 per 100 employee-years) although some occupations, such as meter reader, had higher injury rates for females. For all workers, injury rates were highest for those in the 21 to 30 age group (3.70 per 100 employee-years) and decreased with age. Welders and machinists did not follow this trend and had higher injury rates in the 65+ age group. There were 63 fatalities over the 1995 to 2013 period, with 21 fatalities (33.3%) occurring among line workers.

CONCLUSIONS

Although injury rates have decreased over time, certain high-risk groups remain (i.e., line workers, mechanics, young males, older welders and machinists, and female meter readers).

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Protective measures and targeted safety programs may be warranted to ensure the safety of electric power workers.

Evaluation of functional restoration outcomes for chronic disabling occupational cervical disorders

OBJECTIVE

To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary functional restoration program (FRP) for treating chronic cervical disorders.

METHODS

Consecutive chronic occupational lumbar disorder patients (n = 898) and chronic occupational cervical disorder patients (n = 215) were admitted to an FRP from 2001 to 2011. Patients were compared on demographics, work-related and psychosocial factors, and socioeconomic outcomes 1 year after discharge.

RESULTS

Compared with lumbar patients, cervical patients were more likely to be female, have preadmission surgery, perform white-collar work, and have a longer time between injury and treatment admission. Cervical patients were similar to lumbar patients on most psychosocial self-report outcome measures. In addition, both groups exhibited high work return and work retention rates 1 year after FRP discharge.

CONCLUSIONS

An FRP seems to be equally efficacious for treating both chronic occupational cervical and lumbar disorders.
