Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of delta neutrophil index (DNI), a new inflammatory marker, in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS This retrospective case-control study was conducted at a tertiary health center. The DNI and other blood parameters obtained from the complete blood count examination of 227 individuals, consisting of 72 PCOS patients and 155 controls, were compared between the two groups. A receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to examine the relationship between DNI and PCOS. RESULTS DNI, white blood cell (WBC) count, and neutrophil count were significantly higher in the PCOS group than in the control group (P=0.028, 0.011, and 0.037; respectively). DNI and WBC counts were significantly higher in nonobese-PCOS patients (P=0.018 and 0.041; respectively). When the obese-PCOS and obese-control groups were compared, only neutrophil count was significantly higher in obese-PCOS patients (P=0.016). Significance was observed at cut-off values of 0.015 (area under the curve [AUC]=0.588) (P=0.034; sensitivity, 78%; specificity, 35%; Youden's index=0.133) for DNI: 9.35 (AUC=0.594) (P=0.022) for WBC; and 5.38 (AUC=0.628) (P=0.002) for neutrophils. CONCLUSION Higher DNI in PCOS patients and similar results in the non-obese-PCOS group were observed when obese and non-obese-PCOS patients were considered separately. However, the lack of difference in the obese-PCOS group strengthens the hypothesis that there is obesity-independent inflammation in PCOS.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation. This was a retrospective case-control study. In the present study, the risk coefficients of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and mean platelet volume (MPV) in obese patients with PCOS were determined. This study was designed to investigate NLR, hs-CRP, and MPV levels in 68 obese patients with PCOS and 44 nonobese patients with PCOS, and our study group was matched with 47 obese and 43 nonobese controls, respectively. PCOS group had higher MPV, NLR, insulin, glucose, and HOMA-IR rates than those of the controls. Subgroup analyses revealed that the obese PCOS group had higher NLR, hs-CRP, and MPV levels compared to those of controls. The obese PCOS group had higher NLR, hs-CRP, and MPV levels compared to those of the nonobese PCOS group. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of those variables (NLR, hs-CRP, MPV) were found significant (P < .05). NLR, hs-CRP, and MPV variables were found statistically significant in the analysis of receiver operating characteristics. Our study demonstrated that NLR, hs-CRP, and MPV levels are increased in patients with obese PCOS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis evaluated the association between the mean platelet volume (MPV) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS A systematic literature search using PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases until June 2021 was conducted. Pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were determined using a random effects model. RESULTS Ten studies involving 866 women with PCOS and 548 age- and body mass index-matched women without PCOS were included. The MPV was significantly increased in women with PCOS compared with non-PCOS women (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.13-0.72). Subgroup analyses showed that this trend was consistent in cross-sectional studies (SMD = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.03-0.86) and in Turkish women (SMD = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.13-0.79). Meta-regression analysis revealed a marginally positive correlation between the MPV and the homoeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance in women with PCOS. The sensitivity analysis showed that the effect estimate was robust and stable, and publication bias was not evidenced in the pooled analysis. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis revealed that women with PCOS have a significantly increased MPV than women without PCOS, which is probably associated with insulin resistance.INPLASY registration number: INPLASY2021100021.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age characterized by irregular menstruation and hirsutism and is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Increased inflammatory response and oxidative stress may also present in these patients. In this study, we aimed to compare the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis (dTDH) between the patients with PCOS and healthy individuals and to investigate the correlation between these parameters and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with PCOS. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 60 participants were included in this study. The patient group consisted of 36 patients who were diagnosed with PCOS and the control group consisted of 24 healthy individuals without PCOS. Complete blood count and hormonal tests were performed using blood samples. The NLR, MPV, and dTDH were compared between the patient and control groups. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in the native thiol, total thiol, disulphide levels and disulfide/native, disulfide/total and native/total thiol ratios between the patient and control groups (p = 0.494, p = 0.446, p = 0.338, p = 0.717, p = 0.723, and p = 0.717, respectively). In addition, there was no statistically significant difference in NLR and MPV between the groups (p = 0.531 and p = 0.196). CONCLUSION Our study results showed no significant difference in the NLR, MPV, dTDH levels, and inflammatory biomarkers including leukocyte count between the PCOS patients and healthy controls. Based on these findings, we conclude that the diagnosis of PCOS alone in overweight patients has no considerable effect on these biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups have been suggested to have a high correlation with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It has also been postulated that platelet indices, including mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), are very important in the development and progression of CVDs. However, despite these common associations with CVDs, as far as we know, there are no studies investigating platelet indices in ABO blood groups. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether platelet indices are associated with ABO blood groups. METHODS The study included 301 healthy volunteers (99 women and 202 men; mean age: 32.59 ± 7.52 years) whose blood groups were determined by the gel column method using agglutination techniques. Platelet indices were studied by an automated blood counter. RESULTS No considerable differences in age, gender, or Rh factors were observed among ABO blood groups. MPV was detected to be considerably lower in O and A blood group subjects than in AB and B blood group subjects. Similarly, PDW was significantly lower in O and A blood group subjects than in B blood group subjects. Additionally, MPV in the O blood group subjects was significantly lower than in the non-O blood group subjects. CONCLUSIONS Because MPV and PDW are used as markers of CVDs, individuals with O and A blood groups in this study may be considered to have a lower risk of CVDs than AB and B blood group subjects. However, prospective cohort studies involving a greater number of volunteers are needed to elucidate these relationships.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are the new markers of the detection of inflammation. Our aim is to investigate MPV and NLR in lean and obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS This study was designed to investigate MPV, NLR, and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels in 25 obese patients with PCOS and 16 lean patients with PCOS, and our study group was matched with 16 obese and 14 non-obese controls, respectively. RESULTS PCOS group had higher MPV, NLR, neutrophil count, neutrophil to total leucocyte ratio, basophil count, waist circumference (WC), insulin, glucose, and HOMA-IR rates than those of controls. hsCRP levels were similar in both groups. Subgroup analyses revealed that obese PCOS group had higher insulin and HOMA-IR levels, compared to those of controls. In this subgroup, total leucocyte counts, MPV, and hsCRP levels were similar. On the other hand, lean PCOS group had higher WC, NLR, MPV, and basophil count than controls. In correlation analysis, hsCRP was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI), WC, total leucocyte count, neutrophil count, while negatively correlated with lymphocyte ratio. Although leucocyte count was positively correlated with BMI, MPV was negatively correlated with BMI, total leucocyte, platelet, and neutrophil counts. NLR was positively correlated with HOMA-IR, hsCRP, BMI, WC, and insulin. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that MPV and NLR levels are increased despite similar hsCRP levels in patients with PCOS. However, we failed to demonstrate these differences in obese PCOS patients. Further studies with larger sample size are required to determine the significance of BMI in the inflammation of PCOS patients.

Abstract
Background. Serum omentin-1 level was low in the most types of ischemic heart disease compared to normal subjects; it also dependently correlated with coronary heart disease; thus, omentin-1 is regarded as a novel biomarker in IHD. Objective. The aim of the present study was to establish the links between omentin-1 and acute myocardial infarction in metformin patients. Subjects and Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed on eighty-five patients with type II DM and acute MI. They are divided as follows: Group I, 62 patients with type II DM who received metformin prior to onset of acute MI; Group II, 23 patients with type II DM who did not receive metformin prior to onset of acute MI; and Group III, 30 normal healthy controls. Venous blood was drawn from each participant for determination of lipid profile, plasma omentin-1, cardiac troponin-I (cTn-I) and other routine tests. Results. Patients that presented with acute MI that received metformin show a significant difference in all biochemical parameters (p < 0.001); metformin increases serum omentin-1 level and decreases serum cardiac troponin-I level compared with control subjects and nonmetformin treated patients. Conclusion. Metformin pharmacotherapy increases omentin-1 serum levels and may be regarded as a potential agent in the prevention of the occurrences of acute MI in diabetic patients.
