Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups and the severity of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) lesions, the coexistence of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with PAD, and to identify which blood groups may be more predisposed to these conditions. METHODS This study, which has a single-center and retrospective design, includes 305 patients diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) between 2015 and 2021. The patients were selected from those with at least 50% stenosis detected by computed tomography (CT) angiography. The severity of PAD lesions was evaluated according to the TASC-II classification, and the presence of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) was determined by simultaneous conventional coronary angiography. Demographic data, comorbidities, and laboratory results were collected, and statistical analyses were performed using chi-square tests, logistic regression, and t-tests. All of these patients were divided into two groups based on their ABO blood types: O and non-O blood groups. RESULTS This study demonstrates a significant relationship between blood group classification and both the severity of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients with non-O blood groups exhibited a higher likelihood of having severe PAD lesions (TASC-C and TASC-D) compared to those with O blood groups, who more frequently had milder lesions (TASC-A and TASC-B) (p < 0.001). The prevalence of CAD was also significantly higher among patients with non-O blood groups than those with the O blood group (54.4% vs. 36.4%; p = 0.003). In the logistic regression analysis, non-O blood groups, alongside age, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, emerged as independent predictors of severe PAD (p < 0.001 for non-O blood groups). Similarly, older age and non-O blood group status were identified as significant independent predictors of CAD (p = 0.004). These findings suggest that blood group classification, particularly non-O groups, may influence the severity and coexistence of PAD and CAD. CONCLUSION Our study reveals a significant association between ABO blood groups and both the severity of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and the association of coronary artery disease (CAD), and shows that non-O blood groups are linked to more severe forms of these conditions. These findings highlight the potential role of ABO blood groups in cardiovascular risk stratification, suggesting a need for further research to confirm these associations and understand their clinical implications.

Abstract
Bladder cancer (BCa) is a common cancer worldwide and is often linked with obesity-related comorbidities, but little is known about the underlying genetic mechanisms. To investigate these mechanisms, we used various quantitative tools, including conditional quantile-quantile (Q-Q) plots, conditional false discovery rate (cFDR), and conjunctional conditional false discovery rate (ccFDR), to explore the pleiotropic enrichment of risk loci between BCa and obesity-related traits. We also performed an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analysis to assess the relationship between shared risk loci and gene expression. Finally, we conducted functional annotation using Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and gene ontology (GO) analysis. Our findings indicated that there was successive enrichment for a range of obesity-related traits, including body fat percentage, body mass index, fasting insulin, type 2 diabetes mellitus, fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total triglycerides, and waist-to-hip ratio. Using the tools mentioned above, we identified 18 significant SNPs and 18 closely related genes (cFDR<0.01) under the condition of 8 obesity-related traits. The SNPs included rs143004880, rs73301337, rs10798572, rs11594929, rs17019138, rs2877, rs149795948, rs142509736, rs12727575, rs1571277, rs12131828, rs635634, rs76895963, rs118081211, rs7044247, rs138895564, rs4135275, and rs148023060. Additionally, we identified 15 novel loci using ccFDR, including rs143004880, rs73301337, rs10798572, rs11594929, rs17019138, rs2877, rs142509736, rs1571277, rs635634, rs76895963, rs12131828, rs118081211, rs7044247, rs138895564, and rs4135275. Of the 2 significant loci that modify gene expression, rs12131828 and rs635634 were identified. The functional annotation indicated that the conditional risk genes mainly participated in the regulation of gene silencing. Our study provided evidence of pleiotropic enrichment between BCa and 8 obesity-related traits, and we identified potential genetic mechanisms underlying this relationship. These findings may help in developing targeted clinical treatments for BCa.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cardiovascular illnesses have been associated to ABO blood types, specifically through an effect on von Willebrand factor and factor FVIII levels. We conducted a meta-analysis to comprehensively explore the relationship between blood groups and ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral vascular disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive meta-analysis was undertaken to investigate blood groups and ischemic stroke (IS), myocardial infarction (MI) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Odds ratios (OR) were used to assess the relationship between blood groups and disease. RevMan v5,4 was used to statistically analyse the results. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS A total of 72 studies (18 ischemic stroke, 37 myocardial infarction, 17 peripheral vascular disease) met our search criteria, totalling 145,499 cases and 2,113,736 controls. Mean age ranged between 18 and 90 years. Compared to blood group-O, non-O blood group had an increased association with IS (OR=1.13, 95%Cl: 1.07-1.21, P < 0.001), MI (OR=1.17, 95%Cl: 1.11-1.24, P < 0.001) and PVD (OR=1.15, 95%Cl: 1.04-1.28, P=0.005). Compared to blood group-O, blood group A had a stronger statistically significant association to IS (OR=1.19, P=0.001), MI (OR=1.22, P < 0.001) and PVD (OR=1.15, P=0.03). Blood group-B has the lowest risk associated with MI (OR=1.09, P=0.01). In addition, blood groups AB had a stronger statistically significant association to IS (OR=1.24, P=0.01), and MI (OR=1.20, P < 0.001) compared with the other blood groups. CONCLUSIONS Compared to blood group-O, groups A and AB are strongly associated to ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral vascular disease.

Effect of Supplemental Oxygen on von Willebrand Factor Activity and Ristocetin Cofactor Activity in Patients at Risk for Cardiovascular Complications Undergoing Moderate-to High-Risk Major Noncardiac Surgery-A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Trial. Abstract
Increased von Willebrand Factor (vWF) activity mediates platelet adhesion and might be a contributor to the development of thrombotic complications after surgery. Although in vitro studies have shown that hyperoxia induces endovascular damage, the effect of perioperative supplemental oxygen as a possible trigger for increased vWF activity has not been investigated yet. We tested our primary hypothesis that the perioperative administration of 80% oxygen concentration increases postoperative vWF activity as compared to 30% oxygen concentration in patients at risk of cardiovascular complications undergoing major noncardiac surgery. A total of 260 patients were randomly assigned to receive 80% versus 30% oxygen throughout surgery and for two hours postoperatively. We assessed vWF activity and Ristocetin cofactor activity in all patients shortly before the induction of anesthesia, within two hours after surgery and on the first and third postoperative day. Patient characteristics were similar in both groups. We found no significant difference in vWF activity in the overall perioperative time course between both randomization groups. We observed significantly increased vWF activity in the overall study population throughout the postoperative time course. Perioperative supplemental oxygen showed no significant effect on postoperative vWF and Ristocetin cofactor activity in cardiac risk patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery. In conclusion, we found no significant influence of supplemental oxygen in patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery on postoperative vWF activity and Ristocetin cofactor activity.

Abstract
Although ABO blood groups have been associated with cardio-vascular disease, little is known about whether ABO blood groups contribute to the risk of the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in elderly individuals with hypertension. This study was aimed to explore this as-sociation. A total of 793 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 years out of 2095 patients who underwent primary coronary angiography were retrospectively included. They were divided into CAD and non-CAD groups. Demographic and clinical characteristics, ABO blood groups and other biochemical parameters were compared. Further evaluation was performed to determine the impact of ABO blood groups on CAD severity using the Gensini score and the number of significantly diseased vessels. A logistic regression model was constructed to identify the association of ABO blood groups with CAD. There was a substantial difference in the distribution of ABO blood groups in elderly and hypertensive adults with and without CAD (p=0.022). Hypertensive patients with CAD had a significantly lower proportion of the blood group B than those without CAD (p=0.008). Compared to those with non-Blood group B, hypertensive elderly with a blood group B tended to have significantly lower concentrations of TC, LDL -C and Apo B, and a lower number of significantly stenosed vessels. The blood group B was found to be an independent protective factor for CAD in elderly with hypertension. The blood group B is significantly associated with a decreased risk of CAD and is inversely correlated with the severity of coronary stenosis in the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups are considered to be associated with cardiovascular disease. Nonetheless, the definite effect of ABO blood groups on the clinical outcome of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is still undetermined. We evaluated whether ABO blood groups can predict long-term major adverse cardiocerebrovascular events (MACCE) in CABG patients. METHOD In this retrospective cohort study, we retrieved the clinical files of eligible patients treated with isolated CABG in our hospital between March 2007 and March 2016. We divided the patients into four ABO subgroups. The primary study endpoints were the occurrence of all-cause mortality and MACCE during long-term follow-ups. We used Cox regression survival analysis to define the association of ABO blood groups with the occurrence of MACCE. RESULTS Of 17,892 patients who underwent isolated CABG, 17,713 (mean age, 61.19±9.47 years, 74.6% male) were successfully followed, and their data used in the final analysis. Our multivariable analysis demonstrated that patients with different blood groups had similar 5-year mortality and 5-year MACCE. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that in patients who underwent CABG, ABO blood groups were not associated with long-term MACCE.

Abstract
Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease severity differs widely due to numerous factors including ABO gene-derived susceptibility or resistance. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of the ABO blood group and genetic variations of the ABO gene with COVID-19 severity in a heterogeneous hospital population sample from the United Arab Emirates, with the use of an epidemiological and candidate gene approach from a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 646 participants who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were recruited from multiple hospitals and population-based (quarantine camps) recruitment sites from March 2020 to February 2021. The participants were divided into two groups based on the severity of COVID-19: noncritical (n = 453) and critical [intensive care unit (ICU) patients] (n = 193), as per the COVID-19 Reporting and Data System (CO-RADS) classification. The multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated the association of ABO blood type as well as circulating anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies as well as A and B antigens, in association with critical COVID-19 hospital presentation. A candidate gene analysis approach was conducted from a GWAS where we examined 240 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (position in chr9: 136125788-136150617) in the ABO gene, in association with critical COVID-19 hospital presentation. Results: Patients with blood group O [odds ratio (OR): 0.51 (0.33, 0.79); p = 0.003] were less likely to develop critical COVID-19 symptoms. Eight alleles have been identified to be associated with a protective effect of blood group O in ABO 3'untranslated region (UTR): rs199969472 (p = 0.0052), rs34266669 (p = 0.0052), rs76700116 (p = 0.0052), rs7849280 (p = 0.0052), rs34039247 (p = 0.0104), rs10901251 (p = 0.0165), rs9411475 (p = 0.0377), and rs13291798 (p = 0.0377). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that there are novel allelic variants that link genetic variants of the ABO gene and ABO blood groups contributing to the reduced risk of critical COVID-19 disease. This study is the first study to combine genetic and serological evidence of the involvement of the ABO blood groups and the ABO gene allelic associations with COVID-19 severity within the Middle Eastern population.

Abstract
Numerous investigations conducted in general population have reported that certain ABO blood group may increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, this association has not been yet well established and even is less clear in diabetic patients. Considering that women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at greater risk to develop CHD and have higher cardiovascular mortality, this study aimed to evaluate the association between CHD and ABO blood group in women with T2DM. A case control study of eight hundred eighty-one (881) diabetic women was enrolled in this study. Among them, two hundred thirty eight (238) patients were identified to have CHD (CHD+) and two hundred eighty two (282) of them were identified without CHD but matched with the first group for other CHD risk factors (CHD-). ABO blood type (A, B, AB, O, and Rhesus factor) for both groups were determined. To compare the magnitude of the correlation between various blood groups with CHD development, odd ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated. Our results demonstrates that the percentage of AB blood group was significantly higher in the diabetic women with concurrent CHD than in those without CHD [30 (12.7%) vs. 13 (4.6%), Odd ratio: 2.9 (95%CI: 1.5-5.7), P = 0.001]. The results of the present study clearly demonstrate that the AB blood group has a higher odd ratio for the development of CHD and can be considered as a risk factor for the development of CHD in females with T2DM. More comprehensive studies are required to confirm these results.

Abstract
ABO blood group and body mass index (BMI) have individually been appraised as risk factors for certain diseases. From statistical perspective, it may be important to examine the relationship between the ABO blood antigen and BMI. This cross-sectional study involved 412 participants aged 18 to 46 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. Weight and height of participants were measured for BMI calculation; blood group determination was done using antisera. Blood group O was the most prevalent (51.2%), while Rhesus-positive individuals constituted 90.3%. 6.3% of the participants were obese, while 18.7% were overweight. There was significant (p=0.006) higher prevalence of obesity in females (10.3%) than in males (3.4%). The study did not observe any significant difference by association of ABO blood group with gender (p=0.973), BMI (p=0.307), or Rhesus status (p=0.723). Regarding gender (p=0.400) and BMI (p=0.197), no statistically significant difference was observed between Rhesus blood groups. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, blood type O, and rhesus positive observed among students in this study is largely similar to what has been reported in published studies in Ghana and from other countries. Overweight and obesity were not associated with ABO blood groups or Rhesus in this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have identified ABO blood groups as predictors of thromboembolic diseases. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), however, potential association between ABO blood groups and the risk of left atrial (LA) and/or left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombogenic milieu (TM) has not been established. METHODS This is a retrospective case-control study that included 125 consecutive patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) plus TM, as evidenced by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during a period from1 January 2010 to 31 December 2016. The controls were selected randomly from 1072 NVAF without TM at a 1:2 ratio. Potential association between ABO blood groups and TM was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The risk of TM was higher in patients with blood group A (33.6% vs. 20.2% in non-A blood groups, P=0.005). After adjusting for age, sex, oral anticoagulant use, AF type and duration, and relevant functional measures (e.g., NT-pro BNP level, left atrium diameter, and left ventricular ejection fraction), blood group A remained associated with an increased risk of TM (OR=2.99, 95% CI 1.4-6.388, P=0.005). CONCLUSION Blood group A is an independent risk factor for TM in NVAF patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute aortic type III dissection is one of the most catastrophic events, with in-hospital mortality ranging between 10% and 12%. The majority of patients are treated medically, but complicated dissections, which represent 15% to 20% of cases, require surgical or thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). For the best outcomes adequate blood transfusion support is required. Interest in the relationship between blood type and vascular disease has been established. The aim of our study is to evaluate distribution of blood groups among patients with acute aortic type III dissection and to identify any kind of relationship between blood type and patient's survival. MATERIAL AND METHODS From January 2005 to December 2014, 115 patients with acute aortic type III dissection were enrolled at the Clinic of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in Belgrade, Serbia and retrospectively analyzed. Patients were separated into two groups. The examination group consisted of patients with a lethal outcome, and the control group consisted of patients who survived. RESULTS The analysis of the blood groups and RhD typing between groups did not reveal a statistically significant difference (p = 0.220). CONCLUSIONS Our results indicated no difference between different blood groups and RhD typing with respect to in-hospital mortality of patients with acute aortic dissection type III.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO blood groups have been confirmed to be associated with cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease. However, whether ABO blood group is correlated with coronary artery calcium (CAC) is still unknown. METHOD 301 patients with coronary artery calcium score (CACS) assessed by computed tomography were consecutively enrolled and divided into two groups: with calcium group (CACS>0, n=104) and without calcium group (CACS=0, n=197). Distribution of ABO blood groups was evaluated between the two groups. RESULTS The percentage of A blood type was significantly higher (p=0.008) and O blood type was significantly lower (p=0.037) in the calcium group. Univariate regression analysis showed that age, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, A blood type were positively correlated with CAC, and O blood type was inversely associated with CAC. Multivariate regression analysis showed that A blood type was independently associated with CAC (odds ratio: 2.217, 95% confidence interval: 1.260-3.900, p=0.006) even after further adjustment for variables that were clearly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Our data has suggested for the first time that A blood type was an independent risk marker for CAC.

Abstract
ABO blood group system, a well-known genetic risk factor, has clinically been demonstrated to be linked with thrombotic vascular diseases. However, the relationship between ABO blood group and coronary artery disease (CAD) is still controversial. We here performed an updated meta-analysis of the related studies and tried to elucidate the potential role of ABO blood group as a risk factor for CAD. All detectable case-control and cohort studies comparing the risk of CAD in different ABO blood groups were collected for this analysis through searching PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Ultimately, 17 studies covering 225,810 participants were included. The combined results showed that the risk of CAD was significantly higher in blood group A (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.26, p = 0.01) and lower in blood group O (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.78 to 0.94, p = 0.0008). Even when studies merely about myocardial infarction (MI) were removed, the risk of CAD was still significantly higher in blood group A (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.00 to 1.10, p = 0.03) and lower in blood group O (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.85 to 0.93, p < 0.00001). This updated systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that both blood group A and non-O were the risk factors of CAD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients with various ABO blood types. METHODS Clinical information from 150 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of ISR and 150 patients with a diagnosis of patent coronary stents in the secondary angiography was collected. Comprehensive demographic and laboratory data, including ABO and Rhesus blood groups, as well as comorbid conditions and vessel and stent characteristics, were recorded for each patient. The association of ABO blood groups with the risk of ISR before and after controlling for coronary risk factors was determined. Categorical data were analyzed with the Chi-square test and numerical values were analyzed with t-tests. Binary logistic regression models were constructed to compare type A and non-A for the frequency of risk factors. RESULTS A total of 392 stents were implanted in 300 patients. Two hundred and fourteen stents (54.6%) were patent and 178 stents (45.4%) were stenosed. Blood group A was significantly more common in the ISR group (43.3% vs. 28.7%, p=0.03). However, the frequencies of other blood types, as well as Rh antigen, were similar between the two groups. Triglyceride and low-density lipoproteins were the only significantly different variables (221 ± 198 mg/dL vs. 138 ± 76 mg/dL, p<0.001 and 108 ± 36 mg/dL vs. 96 ± 73 mg/dL, p=0.04, in type-A vs. non-A, respectively). After matching for coronary risk factors, there was no difference between A blood type patients and their controls. CONCLUSION ISR is significantly more prevalent in individuals with the type A blood group. However, this higher association is most likely due to higher atherogenic conditions in patients within this population.

Abstract
ABO blood type is one of the most readily available laboratory tests, and serves as a vital determinant in blood transfusion and organ transplantation. The ABO antigens are expressed not only on red blood cell membranes, determining the compatibility of transfusion, but also on the surface of other human cells, including epithelium, platelet and vascular endothelium, therefore extending the research into other involvements of cardiovascular disease and postoperative outcomes. ABO blood group has been recognized as a risk factor of venous thrombosis embolism since the 1960’s, effects now understood to be related to ABO dependent variations are procoagulant factor VIII (FVIII) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) levels. Levels of vWF, mostly genetically determined, are strongly associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE). It mediates platelet adhesion aggregation and stabilizes FVIII in plasma. Moreover, many studies have tried to identify the relationship between ABO blood types and ischemic heart disease. Unlike the clear and convincing associations between VTE and ABO blood type, the link between ABO blood type and ischemic heart disease is less consistent and may be confusing. Other than genetic factors, ischemic heart disease is strongly related to diet, race, lipid metabolism and economic status. In this review, we’ll summarize the data relating race and genetics, including ABO blood type, to VTE, ischemic heart disease and postoperative bleeding after cardiac surgery.

Abstract
ABO blood groups have been associated with various disease phenotypes, particularly cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of death in developed countries and their prevalence rate is rapidly growing in developing countries. There have been substantial historical associations between non-O blood group status and an increase in some cardiovascular disorders. Recent GWASs have identified ABO as a locus for thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and multiple cardiovascular risk biomarkers, refocusing attention on mechanisms and potential for clinical advances. As we highlight in this paper, more recent work is beginning to probe the molecular basis of the disease associations observed in these observational studies. Advances in our understanding of the physiologic importance of various endothelial and platelet-derived circulating glycoproteins are elucidating the mechanisms through which the ABO blood group may determine overall cardiovascular disease risk. The role of blood group antigens in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular disorders remains a fascinating subject with potential to lead to novel therapeutics and prognostics and to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Background: Data on frequency distribution of ABO-Rh blood groups in cardiac syndrome X (CSX) patients are not available. We aimed to investigate the distribution of ABO-Rh blood groups in these patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 247 CSX patients’ records were reviewed in a cross-sectional study from 2006 to 2010. One hundred forty six patients (59.1%) were female, and the mean patient age was 52 ± 11 years. The frequency of ABO-Rh blood groups was compared to the frequency of these blood groups in the West-Azerbaijan province, Iran; general population. Results: Blood groups distribution among CSX patients showed phenotypes A, B, AB, O and Rh negative as 33.1%, 21.9%, 9.3%, 35.8%, and 7.9%, respectively. According to our results, there were no differences in ABO-Rh blood groups distribution between CSX patients and normal population. Conclusion: These data suggest that ABO-Rh blood groups might be unassociated with CSX.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the association between the ABO blood groups and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infartion (MI) in a young Taiwanese population. METHODS We retrospectively recruited 277 consecutive subjects (men younger than 45 years and women younger than 55 years) who underwent coronary angiography (136 with documented CAD and 129 without CAD) at our center, between 2005 and 2008. Their ABO blood groups were determined using standard agglutination techniques. RESULTS Patients with CAD showed a significantly different blood group distribution (O, 30.1%; A, 39.7%; B, 26.5%; AB, 3.7%) than that shown by the controls (O, 42.6%; A, 24.0%; B, 27.1%; AB, 6.2%; p=0.032). Patients with blood group A had a greater risk of CAD and MI than those with non-A blood groups (OR=2.08, 95% CI=1.23-3.54; OR=2.21, 95% CI=1.19-4.09, respectively). After adjustment for common cardiovascular risk factors such as age, gender, hypertension, cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, family history of CAD, and lipid profiles; blood group A remained significantly associated with an increased risk of CAD and MI (OR=2.61, 95% CI 1.11-6.14, p=0.028; OR=3.53, 95% CI=1.21-10.29, p=0.021, respectively). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that blood group A is an independent risk factor for CAD and MI in young people in Taiwan.
