Abstract
Background In recent years, nutrition has received an increasingly important role in the etiology of cancer. Thus, public education about dietary factors associated with cancer risk or prevention could be an important intervention for cancer prevention, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where the burden of cancer is increasing rapidly and the access to care is limited. The age-standardized incidence of breast cancer was 35.8 among Iranian women in 2020. We aimed to study the effect of nutrition education on the knowledge, attitude, and practice of Iranian women towards dietary factors related to cancer.
Methods In this interventional study, 229 women from public health centers were recruited and underwent three 75-min sessions of education based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). Participants were interviewed by trained interviewers using a validated and reproducible nutrition-related cancer prevention knowledge, attitude, and practice questionnaire (NUTCANKAP) questionnaire designed based on the HBM. Nutritional knowledge, attitude, and practice of participants were assessed through this questionnaire. Three 24-h dietary recalls (one weekend and two nonconsecutive weekdays) were also collected before and one month after the intervention. Results The mean age of the participants was 45.14 years, and the mean BMI was 27.2 kg/m2. After the intervention, the participants had a higher intake of whole grain (p = 0.03) and a lower fat dairy (p = 0.009) and nuts (p = 0.04). However, the intake of high-fat dairy (p = 0.001) decreased after the intervention. We indicated significant differences in knowledge (p < 0.001) and nutritional practice scores (p = 0.01) after education. In addition, after the intervention, there were significant differences in the mean score of the HBM components, except for the perceived self-efficacy. Conclusion Participation in a nutrition education program positively impacted the knowledge and nutritional practices linked to cancer prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chronic kidney disease (CKD) usually occurs during the chronic infection of hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, the risk factors of CKD in an HBV population have not been completely demonstrated. Our present study aimed to investigate the risk factors of CKD in chronic HBV infection using a hospital based cross-sectional study in the northern area of China. METHODS During January 2013 to December 2017, a total of 94 patients with CKD complicated by chronic HBV infection were consecutively enrolled in the study, as well as 548 age- and sex-matched hepatitis B patients without CKD who were enrolled as controls. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to determine the effects of each variable after adjusting for cofounding factors. RESULTS Multivariate analysis showed that HBeAg-positive status (odds ratio [OR]=2.099, 95% CI 1.128-3.907), dyslipidemia (OR: 3.025, 95% CI 1.747-5.239), and hypertension (OR: 12.523, 95% CI 6.283-24.958) were independently associated with the incidence of CKD, while duration of HBV infection (≥240 months) (OR: 0.401, 95% CI 0.179-0.894), Log10 HBsAg (OR: 0.514, 95% CI 0.336-0.786), and coronary heart disease (OR: 0.078, 95% CI 0.008-0.768) were protective factors for the incidence of CKD. Duration of HBV infection, Log10 HBsAg, HBeAg-positive status and dyslipidemia remained the risk factors for CKD after adjusting for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. CONCLUSIONS Duration of HBV infection, Log10 HBsAg, HBeAg-positive status and dyslipidemia contributed to the incidence of CKD during chronic HBV infection in a Chinese population.

Abstract
Inflammatory cytokine storm is one of the main pathogenesis of acute liver injury, and accumulating evidence suggests that the E3 ubiquitin ligase ring finger protein 31 (RNF31) plays an important regulatory role in the activation of inflammatory pathways. We found that RNF31 expression was up-regulated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated HL-7702 cells. Western blotting results showed decreased expression of RNF31 and total ubiquitinated proteins after transfection of si-RNF31. The results of MTT assay indicated that cell viability was enhanced. Flow cytometry analysis showed that cell apoptosis and ROS content was decreased, and ELISA assay results exhibited that the inflammatory factors secretion was reduced. Interestingly, A20 protein expression was inhibited as RNF31 expression was upregulated. On this basis, we performed co-immunoprecipitation assays and found that RNF31 could interact with A20. Actinomycin tracing and proteasome inhibition experiments showed that RNF31 degrades A20 through the proteasome pathway. Furthermore, overexpression of A20 enhanced cell viability, reduced apoptosis, and inhibited ROS generation and inflammatory factor secretion. Mechanistic studies revealed that RNF31 was able to degrade A20, which affected the inflammatory response and hepatocyte apoptosis mediated by the toll like receptor 4 (TLR4)/myeloid differentiation factor88 (MyD88)/nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Moreover, knockdown of RNF31 attenuated the inflammatory response induced by d-Gal/LPS in mice with acute liver injury. In conclusion, RNF31 degrades A20 by ubiquitination and activates the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway to aggravate acute liver injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Epigenetics contributes to the outcome of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, the role of methyl-CpG binding domain (MBD) family in the natural history of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) has not been demonstrated. It is aimed to investigate the dynamic expression of MBD family and assess the potential association of MBD family in the progression of CHB. METHODS Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to determine the mRNA levels of MBD family in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 223 patients with CHB as training cohort, 146 patients with CHB as validation cohort [immune-tolerant (IT), immune clearance (IC), non/low-replicative (LR) and HBeAg negative hepatitis (ENH)], and 14 healthy controls (HCs). RESULTS The mRNA levels of MeCP2, MBD1, MBD2 and MBD4 were upregulated in patients with CHB compared with HCs. MBD1 mRNA was highest expressed in IT phase than other phases. The optimal cut-off value for MBD1 mRNA in discriminating IT phase from CHB was 0.0305 in both training and validation cohorts. Both MBD2 and MBD4 mRNA were highest expressed in IC phase than other phases. Moreover, the optimal cut-off values for MBD2 and MBD4 mRNA in discriminating IC phase from CHB were 0.0069 and 0.00099. Furthermore, MBD2 plus MBD4 performed better than MBD2 alone for discriminating IC phase from CHB in training (area under the curve of receiver operating characteristics [AUC] 0.736 vs. 0.671, P=0.0225) and validation cohorts (AUC 0.754 vs. 0.665, P=0.004). MeCP2 mRNA was highest expressed in patients with S3+S4. MeCP2 mRNA has higher AUC than APRI score for predicting S3+S4 and S4 in fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS MBD family is involved in the pathogenesis of CHB and is correlated with disease progression, suggesting the value in evaluating disease severity.

Abstract
A20 is an important negative immune regulator but its role in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is still unknown. This present study was to investigate the potential role of A20 gene in the progression of chronic HBV infection. A total of 236 chronic HBV patients were included and consisted of 63 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 87 liver cirrhosis (LC) and 86 chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The mRNA level of A20 gene in peripheral blood mononuclear cells was determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Receptor operating characteristic curve (ROC) was performed to determine the diagnostic value of A20 mRNA in different stages of chronic HBV infection. A20 mRNA levels in all HBV patients were significantly higher than healthy controls (n=30), of whom HCC and LC patients showed higher A20 mRNA level than CHB patients. In CHB patients, A20 mRNA was closely associated with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and total bilirubin. In LC patients, A20 mRNA was significantly associated with ALT, AST, albumin, haemoglobin and platelet. In HCC patients, elevated A20mRNA was also observed in patients with vascular invasion, liver cirrhosis and ascites, compared with those without. ROC analysis revealed that A20 mRNA could effectively discriminate LC from CHB, decompensated LC from compensated LC, and HCC from CHB. In conclusion, A20 mRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells was associated with dynamic progression of chronic HBV infection. A20 gene might be a potential biomarker to determine the different stages of chronic HBV infection.
