Primary Renal Rhabdomyosarcoma in an Adolescent With Tumor Thrombosis in the Inferior Vena Cava and Right Atrium: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

A Rare Case of Rhabdosarcoma on the Upper Pole of the Kidney

Rhabdomyosarcoma arising from the upper pole of the kidney is an exceedingly rare occurrence, with only a few documented cases reported in the literature. Here, we present a case of a one-year-old Indian male child diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma localized to the upper pole of the kidney. The patient presented with abdominal distension persisting for three days, and imaging studies revealed a mass consistent with renal sarcoma. Surgical excision was performed, followed by histopathological examination confirming the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. Despite aggressive management, the patient's prognosis remains guarded due to the disease's aggressive nature. This case highlights the importance of considering rhabdomyosarcoma in the differential diagnosis of renal masses, particularly in atypical locations. Early diagnosis and a multimodal treatment approach are crucial for optimizing outcomes in such rare cases.

Pediatric Rhabdomyosarcomas of the Genitourinary Tract

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in the pediatric and adolescent population, with 350 new cases diagnosed each year. While they can develop anywhere in the body, the genitourinary tract is the second most common primary location for an RMS to develop. Overall survival has improved through the increased use of protocols and multidisciplinary approaches. However, the guidelines for management continue to change as systemic and radiation therapeutics advance. Given the relative rarity of this disease compared to other non-solid childhood malignancies, healthcare providers not directly managing RMS may not be familiar with their presentation and updated management. This review aims to provide foundational knowledge of the management of RMSs with an emphasis on specific management paradigms for those arising from the genitourinary tract. The genitourinary tract is the second most common location for an RMS to develop but varies greatly in symptomology and survival depending on the organ of origin. As the clinical understanding of these tumors advances, treatment paradigms have evolved. Herein, we describe the breadth of presentations for genitourinary RMSs with diagnostic and treatment management considerations, incorporating the most recently available guidelines and societal consensus recommendations.

Giant right hydronephrosis with underlying double malignancy: a case report

Giant hydronephrosis is mostly caused by ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). Giant hydronephrosis with concurrent malignancy is less common clinically and is easily misdiagnosed. We report a 77-year-old male who presented with sudden onset progressive abdominal distension in the last month. Abdominal computed tomography showed a right severe hydronephrotic kidney with loss of parenchymal thinning. Cystoscopy showed a 1x1cm papillary lesion protruding from the right ureteric orifice. He underwent a right radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision with lymph node dissection. Histopathology showed low-grade urothelial carcinoma of the ureter and incidental pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma in the right kidney. The patient refused chemotherapy and died 6 months later due to lung metastasis. Incidental pathologic finding of renal rhabdomyosarcoma in adults with giant hydronephrosis and urothelial carcinoma is a rare occurrence with diverse clinical presentations, prognoses, and outcomes.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the kidney: A case report

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a mesenchymal malignancy. It can occur anywhere in the body, but is extremely rare in the kidney. Here, we report a rare case of rhabdomyosarcoma of the kidney in a 19-year-old female who presented with right lumbar pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) suggested a huge retroperitoneal mass (approximately 18 × 14 cm). Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy was performed through two preoperative cycle. After admission to our department for further evaluation, enhanced abdominal CT showed a mass of the right kidney (9.6 cm × 7.1 cm). The mass was successfully removed by surgery and the patient achieved a complete recovery.

Pleomorphic Rhabdomyosarcoma: A Systematic Review with Outcome Analysis and Report of a Rare Abdominal Wall Lesion

Introduction. Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is an aggressive and rare malignant neoplasm with a poor prognosis. As its name suggests, this tumor exhibits extensive pleomorphism with features of skeletal muscle differentiation. Due to its rarity, its diagnosis is often a clinical and pathological challenge. Since only small case series and a few scattered case reports exist in the literature, the impact of different demographic features, tumor site, and/or treatment modality on patient outcomes has yet to be extensively studied. Methods. We report a case of a pleomorphic RMS presenting atypically as an abdominal wall mass. We have also analyzed the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database to determine the factors affecting the outcome of this neoplasm. Moreover, we present a review and summary of pleomorphic RMS cases arising from the abdominal wall reported in the English language literature. Results. We found two hundred and forty-two cases of pleomorphic RMS in the SEER database. The majority of the patients were diagnosed after the age of 40, with the age of diagnosis showing a unimodal distribution. The majority of the patients were Caucasian (82%) and male (59%). Age of diagnosis, tumor stage, and surgical management significantly affected the patients' outcome, while patients' ethnicity, sex, or tumor site did not affect the outcome. We only found five previously reported cases of pleomorphic RMS arising from the abdominal wall. Conclusions. Pleomorphic RMS arising from the abdominal wall is extremely rare. Our data sheds light on the factors affecting the outcome of pleomorphic RMS. We have also discussed the challenges involving the histopathological diagnosis of this rare neoplasm and how to best approach this task.

Primary renal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in an adult patient

Adult renal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare and aggressive entity with a paucity of data and reports in the literature. As a result, treatment guidelines for this malignancy are not well-established. Herein, we present the diagnosis, management and clinical course of a 39-year-old patient diagnosed with primary renal embryonal RMS (ERMS) following radical nephrectomy. We also review the existing literature on primary renal ERMS.
