Acupuncture for uterine fibroids: Protocol for a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs versus Chinese herbs alone to improve the clinical efficacy of uterine fibroids: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs versus Chinese herbs alone in treating uterine fibroids.

Methods

A literature search of eight databases identified nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs compared to Chinese herbs alone for treating uterine fibroids. Subsequently, data extraction and analysis were conducted to assess the methodological quality and risk of bias in the studies, followed by an analysis of the data from the randomized controlled trials.

Results

Nine randomized controlled trials involving 640 women were included. The results indicated that acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs significantly increased the overall clinical efficacy rate [Z=5.00, P=0.74, relative risk(RR)1.20, 95%CI 1.12 to 1.30, P<0.00001, I²=0%] and reduced the size of uterine fibroids [Z=2.95, P=0.003, SMD=-0.82, 95%CI -1.36 to -0.27, P<0.00001, I²=90%].

Conclusions

Studies have shown that acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs reduces uterine size, lowers hormone levels, and improves quality of life. According to the findings of this study, acupuncture combined with Chinese herbs has a more positive effect on the treatment of uterine fibroids than Chinese herbs alone. However, due to the limited number and quality of the included studies, these conclusions need to be validated by further high-quality research.

Acupuncture combined with mifepristone improves sex hormones and inflammatory factors in patients with uterine fibroids

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with mifepristone on uterine fibroids and its influence on sex hormones and inflammatory factors.

METHODS

Data of 102 patients with uterine fibroids admitted to Shanxi Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, there were 50 patients treated with mifepristone alone (control group) and 52 patients undergoing combined treatment of acupuncture and mifepristone (observation group). After 2 months of continuous treatment, the therapeutic efficacy, volume of uterine fibroids and uterus, levels of inflammatory factors (C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)), as well as levels of estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), along with hemodynamic levels and incidence of adverse reactions were recorded and compared between the two groups. Logistic analysis was employed to identify the independent risk factors for the recurrence of uterine fibroids in patients.

RESULTS

Compared with the control group, the observation group was identified with significantly higher overall response rate (P < 0.05). The uterine fibroid volume and uterine volume significantly improved in both groups after treatment, and the improvements were more prominent in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum CRP and TNF-α were both evidently decreased in the two groups, while levels of E2, FSH, LH and peak blood flow velocity were significantly ameliorated, and the improvements in the observation group were more significant than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P > 0.05). Alcohol intake and treatment regime were independent risk factors for the recurrence of uterine fibroids in patients.

CONCLUSION

Combining acupuncture with mifepristone can significantly improve uterine fibroids, estrogen and progesterone levels, as well as reduce inflammation, with a high level of safety, making it a promising treatment for clinical use.

A protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis of acupuncture for drug resistant epilepsy

BACKGROUND

This study aims to appraise the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for drug resistant epilepsy (DRE).

METHODS

We will search all potential randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture for patients with DRE from their origin to March 1, 2020: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Scopus, WANGFANG, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. We will not apply any restrictions to the language and publication date. All RCTs investigating the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for patients with DRE will be included. Study quality will be appraised by Cochrane risk of bias, and statistical analysis will be scrutinized by RevMan 5.3 software. Whenever possible, a narrative summary to describe study quality and content of the evidence will be performed.

RESULTS

This study will provide summarize high quality evidence and will utilize a variety of outcome measurements to verify effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for DRE.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study will seek to explore the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for DRE.

MiR-93 blocks cell cycle progression and promotes apoptosis in uterine leiomyoma cells by targeting CCND1

Uterine leiomyoma (UL) is the most common type of benign tumor in the women's reproductive system. A number of genes has been found to play an important role in the initiation and progression of UL, including miRNAs. In this study, our results exhibited that miR-93, a member of mir-106b-25 cluster, significantly reduced the cell viability, promoted cell cycle arrest, caused apoptosis, and inhibited migration in UL cells (p < .01). Moreover, our results have provided experimental evidence that miR-93 regulated the biological functions of UL cells by targeting CCND1.
