Tattoo Regret, Complications, and Removal: A Cross-Sectional Study among Tattooed Individuals in Saudi Arabia

Background

A tattoo is a pigment permanently deposited into the skin to create different patterns. The worldwide percentage of tattooed individuals, as well as the level of tattoo regret, complications, and removal, has increased. However, data from Saudi Arabia are lacking.

Objective

To determine the rates of tattoo regret, complications, and removal among tattooed individuals in Saudi Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study using an online survey was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A link to the survey was distributed through social media and contained twenty questions about participants' demographics, tattoo practices, regret, removal, and complications. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

A total of 181 tattooed individuals participated in the study. Most of them were females (95.6%), and 76.7% had their first tattoo at an age over eighteen years. A total of 47.5% had one tattoo session, and the most common body site was the eyebrows (57.5%). Fifty-eight percent regretted their tattoo, and 42.5% attempted to remove it. Upper extremity tattoos were significantly associated with regret (72.3%) (P=0.004) and removal (56.9%) (P=0.003). Tattoo removal was mostly due to cultural reasons (74%). Local itching (32%), pain (22.7%), and infection (10.5%) were reported and associated with tattoo regret (P < 0.05). Itching was significant in 65.4% of head and neck tattoos and 41.5% of upper extremity tattoos (P < 0.05). Participants were aware that laser is the best method for tattoo removal.

Conclusion

Among tattooed individuals in Saudi Arabia, the rate of tattoo regret and removal is high, and the most reported complication is pruritus.

Microblading-Induced Granulomatous Reaction: Case Report and Review of the Literature

ABSTRACT

Microblading is a common cosmetic procedure that can modify the appearance of one's eyebrows. Although generally well-tolerated, the procedure can cause a number of dermatologic issues; on rare occasions, granulomatous reactions can manifest. We use this case to highlight a presentation of a nonsarcoidal granulomatous dermatitis and review the literature on granulomatous reactions secondary to microblading. Of the 21 cases included in our review, approximately half (10/21) were diagnosed with foreign-body granulomas and the other half with sarcoidosis (7 of 21 with systemic sarcoidosis and 4 of 21 with cutaneous sarcoidosis). Although microblading remains a commonplace cosmetic technique, it is not without risk. Much like other types of tattoos, microblading can cause granulomatous reactions for which we must be vigilant, and further workup for sarcoidosis might be considered in select patients.

Trends in eyebrow makeup after COVID-19 and long-COVID era

Background and Objectives

The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, which began in 2019, is threatening millions of people around the world. Coronavirus, a severe acute respiratory syndrome, made it mandatory to wear masks, it was carried out through public awareness and review of changes in cosmetics.

Methods

This literature review paper was written by referring to keywords such as "Eyebrow," "Permanent Make-up," "Microblading," "Make-up," and "COVID-19." The study selected a total of 485 references using representative journal search sites such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, RISS, DBPia, and CrossRef, of which a total of 43 papers were selected at the final stage from 2000 to 2022 using PRISMA flow diagram.

Results

With the wearing of a mask due to COVID-19, we are paying attention to the change in the makeup trend caused by the preference for easy eye makeup.

Conclusions

This narrative review understands that eyebrow makeup has a significant impact on human images due to changes in makeup methods after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected to be used as important data for the rapidly growing semi-permanent makeup market.

Complication after nipple-areolar complex tattooing performed by a non-medical person: A case report

BACKGROUND

Compared to earlier, there has been an increase in the tattoo procedures for cosmetic purposes; and there has also been an increase in the tattoo procedures performed by non-medical personnel. In South Korea, only tattoos performed by a doctor are considered legal; however, there is still some debate over whether tattoo procedures performed by non-healthcare providers should be considered legal.

CASE SUMMARY

A 28-year-old woman visited our hospital with pain in both nipples and heat sensation over the last 4 d. She had a history of a nipple tattoo performed by an unlicensed person. Pinpoint bleeding was noted in both areolar areas, and the exudate mixed with pus and orange color ink was discharged. Oral medication and tulle with foam dressing were performed under the impression of cellulitis and allergic reaction. After 4 wk, nipples remained dark brown in color, resulting in a color mismatch between the nipple and orange-colored areola. The size of the areola was also found to be distinctly asymmetrical after healing. This complication may have been caused by the use of illegal ink or unsanitary procedures, or a problem may have occurred in the post-tattoo management stage.

CONCLUSION

Doctors use approved ink, aseptic procedure and appropriate postoperative care, and appropriate management can be performed in case of complications.

Sarcoidosis and sarcoidal foreign body reaction after permanent eye makeup application: Analysis by immunohistochemistry with commercially available antibodies specific to Cutibacterium acnes and Mycobacteria

We report two cases of eyebrow granulomas in patients who underwent a permanent eye makeup procedure. A rash was observed 16 months after the procedure in case 1 and 10 years after the procedure in case 2. Histopathologically, both patients exhibited non-caseating epithelioid cell granulomas. In case 1, most of the black-brown granules of the permanent makeup were not present in the granulomas but were localized in the upper dermis. In contrast, in case 2, some of the black-brown granules were phagocytized in the granulomas, preferentially within the giant cells. Based on systemic examinations, the patients from cases 1 and 2 were diagnosed with sarcoidosis and sarcoidal foreign body reaction, respectively. To clarify the pathogenesis of our cases, we performed immunohistochemistry using commercially available monoclonal antibodies specific to Cutibacterium acnes, previously Propionibacterium acnes (PAB), and Mycobacteria (LAM antibody). PAB antibody results were positive in granulomas only in case 1, and the LAM antibody results were negative in both cases. Immunohistochemical detection of C. acnes in granulomas could provide useful information for differentiating between cutaneous sarcoidosis and sarcoidal foreign body reactions.

Axillary lymph node "bubbly" calcifications and body tattoo: A case series and proposed algorithm to minimize lymph node biopsies

The presence of mammographically evident hyperdense foci within axillary lymph nodes elicits concern for calcium deposits, which in turn have a wide differential diagnosis including both benign and malignant entities. Tissue sampling, most commonly by way of image-guided core needle biopsy, is needed in many cases when a definite etiology cannot be clinically established. In this case series we present history, imaging findings, and pathology results (or long term follow-up stability as biopsy surrogate) of several women with body tattoos who at mammography were noted to have a characteristic pattern of "bubbly" pseudo-calcifications within axillary lymph nodes, and absence of other mammographic, sonographic and clinical abnormalities.
