Social Media Devices' Influence on User Neck Pain during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Collaborating Vertebral-GLCM Extracted Features with a Decision Tree

The prevalence of neck pain, a chronic musculoskeletal disease, has significantly increased due to the uncontrollable use of social media (SM) devices. The use of SM devices by younger generations increased enormously during the COVID-19 pandemic, being-in some cases-the only possibility for maintaining interpersonal, social, and friendship relationships. This study aimed to predict the occurrence of neck pain and its correlation with the intensive use of SM devices. It is based on nine quantitative parameters extracted from the retrospective X-ray images. The three parameters related to angle_1 (i.e., the angle between the global horizontal and the vector pointing from C7 vertebra to the occipito-cervical joint), angle_2 (i.e., the angle between the global horizontal and the vector pointing from C1 vertebra to the occipito-cervical joint), and the area between them were measured from the shape of the neck vertebrae, while the rest of the parameters were extracted from the images using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). In addition, the users' ages and the duration of the SM usage (H.mean) were also considered. The decision tree (DT) machine-learning algorithm was employed to predict the abnormal cases (painful subjects) against the normal ones (no pain). The results showed that angle_1, area, and the image contrast significantly increased statistically with the time of SM-device usage, precisely in the range of 2 to 9 h. The DT showed a promising result demonstrated by classification accuracy and F1-scores of 94% and 0.95, respectively. Our findings confirmed that the objectively detected parameters, which elucidate the negative impacts of SM-device usage on neck pain, can be predicted by DT machine learning.

A Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applications to Inflammatory Bowel Disease, with Practical Guidelines for Interpretation

BACKGROUND

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a gastrointestinal chronic disease with an unpredictable disease course. Computational methods such as machine learning (ML) have the potential to stratify IBD patients for the provision of individualized care. The use of ML methods for IBD was surveyed, with an additional focus on how the field has changed over time.

METHODS

On May 6, 2021, a systematic review was conducted through a search of MEDLINE and Embase databases, with the search structure ("machine learning" OR "artificial intelligence") AND ("Crohn* Disease" OR "Ulcerative Colitis" OR "Inflammatory Bowel Disease"). Exclusion criteria included studies not written in English, no human patient data, publication before 2001, studies that were not peer reviewed, nonautoimmune disease comorbidity research, and record types that were not primary research.

RESULTS

Seventy-eight (of 409) records met the inclusion criteria. Random forest methods were most prevalent, and there was an increase in neural networks, mainly applied to imaging data sets. The main applications of ML to clinical tasks were diagnosis (18 of 78), disease course (22 of 78), and disease severity (16 of 78). The median sample size was 263. Clinical and microbiome-related data sets were most popular. Five percent of studies used an external data set after training and testing for additional model validation.

DISCUSSION

Availability of longitudinal and deep phenotyping data could lead to better modeling. Machine learning pipelines that consider imbalanced data and that feature selection only on training data will generate more generalizable models. Machine learning models are increasingly being applied to more complex clinical tasks for specific phenotypes, indicating progress towards personalized medicine for IBD.

Artificial intelligence in gastroenterology: A state-of-the-art review

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has increased dramatically in the last 20 years, with clinical applications progressively being explored for most of the medical specialties. The field of gastroenterology and hepatology, substantially reliant on vast amounts of imaging studies, is not an exception. The clinical applications of AI systems in this field include the identification of premalignant or malignant lesions (e.g., identification of dysplasia or esophageal adenocarcinoma in Barrett’s esophagus, pancreatic malignancies), detection of lesions (e.g., polyp identification and classification, small-bowel bleeding lesion on capsule endoscopy, pancreatic cystic lesions), development of objective scoring systems for risk stratification, predicting disease prognosis or treatment response [e.g., determining survival in patients post-resection of hepatocellular carcinoma), determining which patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) will benefit from biologic therapy], or evaluation of metrics such as bowel preparation score or quality of endoscopic examination. The objective of this comprehensive review is to analyze the available AI-related studies pertaining to the entirety of the gastrointestinal tract, including the upper, middle and lower tracts; IBD; the hepatobiliary system; and the pancreas, discussing the findings and clinical applications, as well as outlining the current limitations and future directions in this field.

Building a Cardiovascular Disease Prediction Model for Smartwatch Users Using Machine Learning: Based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Smartwatches have the potential to support health care in everyday life by supporting self-monitoring of health conditions and personal activities. This paper aims to develop a model that predicts the prevalence of cardiovascular disease using health-related data that can be easily measured by smartwatch users. To this end, the data corresponding to the health-related data variables provided by the smartwatch are selected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. To classify the prevalence of cardiovascular disease with these selected variables, we apply logistic regression, artificial neural network, and support vector machine among machine learning classification techniques, and compare the appropriateness of the algorithm through classification performance indicators. The prediction model using support vector machine showed the highest accuracy. Next, we analyze which structures or parameters of the support vector machine contribute to increasing accuracy and derive the importance of input variables. Since it is very important to diagnose cardiovascular disease early correctly, we expect that this model will be very useful if there is a tool to predict whether cardiovascular disease develops or not.

A systematic review of the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in autoimmune diseases

Autoimmune diseases are chronic, multifactorial conditions. Through machine learning (ML), a branch of the wider field of artificial intelligence, it is possible to extract patterns within patient data, and exploit these patterns to predict patient outcomes for improved clinical management. Here, we surveyed the use of ML methods to address clinical problems in autoimmune disease. A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE, embase and computers and applied sciences complete databases. Relevant papers included "machine learning" or "artificial intelligence" and the autoimmune diseases search term(s) in their title, abstract or key words. Exclusion criteria: studies not written in English, no real human patient data included, publication prior to 2001, studies that were not peer reviewed, non-autoimmune disease comorbidity research and review papers. 169 (of 702) studies met the criteria for inclusion. Support vector machines and random forests were the most popular ML methods used. ML models using data on multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease were most common. A small proportion of studies (7.7% or 13/169) combined different data types in the modelling process. Cross-validation, combined with a separate testing set for more robust model evaluation occurred in 8.3% of papers (14/169). The field may benefit from adopting a best practice of validation, cross-validation and independent testing of ML models. Many models achieved good predictive results in simple scenarios (e.g. classification of cases and controls). Progression to more complex predictive models may be achievable in future through integration of multiple data types.

Data mining for the identification of metabolic syndrome status

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a condition associated with metabolic abnormalities that are characterized by central obesity (e.g. waist circumference or body mass index), hypertension (e.g. systolic or diastolic blood pressure), hyperglycemia (e.g. fasting plasma glucose) and dyslipidemia (e.g. triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). It is also associated with the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, the rapid identification of MS is required to prevent the occurrence of such diseases. Herein, we review the utilization of data mining approaches for MS identification. Furthermore, the concept of quantitative population-health relationship (QPHR) is also presented, which can be defined as the elucidation/understanding of the relationship that exists between health parameters and health status. The QPHR modeling uses data mining techniques such as artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), principal component analysis (PCA), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF) and association analysis (AA) for modeling and construction of predictive models for MS characterization. The DT method has been found to outperform other data mining techniques in the identification of MS status. Moreover, the AA technique has proved useful in the discovery of in-depth as well as frequently occurring health parameters that can be used for revealing the rules of MS development. This review presents the potential benefits on the applications of data mining as a rapid identification tool for classifying MS.

Predicting Metabolic Syndrome Using the Random Forest Method

Aims. This study proposes a computational method for determining the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and to predict its occurrence using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria. The Random Forest (RF) method is also applied to identify significant health parameters. Materials and Methods. We used data from 5,646 adults aged between 18–78 years residing in Bangkok who had received an annual health check-up in 2008. MS was identified using the NCEP ATP III criteria. The RF method was applied to predict the occurrence of MS and to identify important health parameters surrounding this disorder. Results. The overall prevalence of MS was 23.70% (34.32% for males and 17.74% for females). RF accuracy for predicting MS in an adult Thai population was 98.11%. Further, based on RF, triglyceride levels were the most important health parameter associated with MS. Conclusion. RF was shown to predict MS in an adult Thai population with an accuracy >98% and triglyceride levels were identified as the most informative variable associated with MS. Therefore, using RF to predict MS may be potentially beneficial in identifying MS status for preventing the development of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases.

An interpretable rule-based diagnostic classification of diabetic nephropathy among type 2 diabetes patients

Background

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. Various complications are associated with type 2 diabetes, with diabetic nephropathy being the leading cause of renal failure among diabetics. Often, when patients are diagnosed with diabetic nephropathy, their renal functions have already been significantly damaged. Therefore, a risk prediction tool may be beneficial for the implementation of early treatment and prevention.

Results

In the present study, we developed a decision tree-based model integrating genetic and clinical features in a gender-specific classification for the identification of diabetic nephropathy among type 2 diabetic patients. Clinical and genotyping data were obtained from a previous genetic association study involving 345 type 2 diabetic patients (185 with diabetic nephropathy and 160 without diabetic nephropathy). Using a five-fold cross-validation approach, the performance of using clinical or genetic features alone in various classifiers (decision tree, random forest, Naïve Bayes, and support vector machine) was compared with that of utilizing a combination of attributes. The inclusion of genetic features and the implementation of an additional gender-based rule yielded better classification results.

Conclusions

The current model supports the notion that genes and gender are contributing factors of diabetic nephropathy. Further refinement of the proposed approach has the potential to facilitate the early identification of diabetic nephropathy and the development of more efficient treatment in a clinical setting.

Integrating and mining diverse data in human immunological studies

Bioanalysts and immunologists can interrogate the immune system with a variety of high-throughput technologies such as gene expression, multiplex bead arrays and flow cytometry. Conceptually, these assays support systems immunology studies, in which phenomena can be measured and correlated across biological compartments. First, however, the resulting high-dimensional data must be combined in a consistent fashion that supports analysis of the data as an integrated whole. Next, analytical methods must be applied to the hundreds or thousands of readouts. We recommend the use of a four-part analytical pipeline, consisting of data integration, hypothesis generation, prediction and hypothesis testing, and validation. We describe a variety of established methods appropriate for these integrated datasets, and highlight their application to human immunological studies. Our goal is to provide bioanalysts, immunologists and data analysts with a valuable perspective with which to approach the multiassay high-dimensional datasets generated by contemporary immunological studies.

A decision tree-based approach for identifying urban-rural differences in metabolic syndrome risk factors in the adult Korean population

AIM

The purpose of this study was to explore the difference in the pattern of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in urban and rural populations in Korea using data mining techniques.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

In total, 1013 adults >30 yr of age from urban (184 males and 313 females) and rural districts (211 males and 305 females) were recruited from Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to identify individuals with MetS. We applied a decision tree analysis to elucidate the differences in the clustering of MetS components between the urban and rural populations.

RESULTS

The prevalence of MetS was 33.2% and 35.2% in urban and rural districts, respectively (p=0.598). The decision-tree approach revealed that the combination of high serum triglycerides (TG) + high systolic blood pressure (SBP), high TG + low HDL cholesterol, and high waist circumference (WC) + high SBP + high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were strong predictors of MetS in the urban population, whereas the combination of TG + SBP + WC and SBP + WC + FPG showed high positive predictive value for the presence of MetS in the rural population.

CONCLUSIONS

Although no significant difference was found for the prevalence of MetS between the two populations, the differences in the clustering pattern of MetS components in urban and rural districts in Korea were identified by decision tree analysis. Our findings may serve as a basis to design necessary population-based intervention programs for prevention and progression of MetS and its complications in Korea.

Identification of metabolic syndrome using decision tree analysis

This study employs decision tree as a decision support system for rapid and automated identification of individuals with metabolic syndrome (MS) among a Thai population. Results demonstrated strong predictivity of the decision tree in classification of individuals with and without MS, displaying an overall accuracy in excess of 99%.
