Effects of Personality Traits and Mentalization on Workplace Bullying Experiences among Intensive Care Unit Nurses

Aim. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intensive care unit nurses’ personality traits and mentalization on workplace bullying after controlling for organizational culture. Background. Nurses’ personality traits and mentalization may significantly influence workplace bullying. Methods. This cross-sectional study collected data from 416 nurses using an online survey in July 2022. Major variables were evaluated using the Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Psychological Distress Scale, Short Dark Triad, Mentalization Scale, Positive Nursing Organizational Culture Measurement Tool, and the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised. . A multiple regression analysis was performed. Results. Narcissistic vulnerability, mentalization, and perfectionistic self-presentation significantly influence workplace bullying (victim aspect). Dark personality, mentalization, and perfectionistic self-presentation significantly influence workplace bullying (perpetrator aspect). Conclusions. Individual nurses could become either victims of bullying or perpetrators according to their personality traits. Therefore, it is necessary to determine their personality traits, so that they do not become influencing factors in workplace bullying. Implications for Nursing Management. Efforts at a nursing organization level are crucial to understand nurses’ personality traits, enhance their mentalization, minimize the manifestations of the negative aspects of their traits, and positively affect the prevention and alleviation of workplace bullying.

Pathological narcissism, interpersonal cognitive distortions, and workplace bullying among nurses: A cross-sectional study

AIM

The aim of this work is to examine whether nurses' pathological narcissism and interpersonal cognitive distortions predict workplace bullying when controlling for organizational culture, work-related factors, and demographic variables.

BACKGROUND

To eradicate workplace bullying, a multifaceted holistic approach to identify potential predictors is needed. Nurses' narcissistic behaviours negatively affect collegial relationships and the organization. Furthermore, interpersonal cognitive distortions have been demonstrated to directly affect bullying and victimization.

METHODS

Responses from 236 nurses to an online survey were analysed. The Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale, Positive Nursing Organizational Culture Measurement Tool, and The Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised were used to measure the key variables.

RESULTS

A multiple regression analysis revealed that pathological narcissism (β = .33, p < .001) had the greatest effect on nurses' workplace bullying, followed by positive organizational culture (β = -.31, p < .001), interpersonal cognitive distortions (β = .17, p = .028), marital status (β = -.15, p = .020), and position (β = -.12, p = .047).

CONCLUSIONS

Although prejudice or stigma surrounding narcissistic personalities should be avoided, nurses should be aware of and manage such characteristics so that they do not become a factor in workplace bullying.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

There is a need to protect nurses from workplace bullying and create a positive organizational culture by recognizing narcissistic traits and preparing intervention strategies that support improvement.

Dysregulation of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor-Cholesterol Crosstalk in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a set of complex neurodevelopmental diseases that include impaired social interaction, delayed and disordered language, repetitive or stereotypic behavior, restricted range of interests, and altered sensory processing. The underlying causes of the core symptoms remain unclear, as are the factors that trigger their onset. Given the complexity and heterogeneity of the clinical phenotypes, a constellation of genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and immunological factors may be involved. The lack of appropriate biomarkers for the evaluation of neurodevelopmental disorders makes it difficult to assess the contribution of early alterations in neurochemical processes and neuroanatomical and neurodevelopmental factors to ASD. Abnormalities in the cholinergic system in various regions of the brain and cerebellum are observed in ASD, and recently altered cholesterol metabolism has been implicated at the initial stages of the disease. Given the multiple effects of the neutral lipid cholesterol on the paradigm rapid ligand-gated ion channel, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, we explore in this review the possibility that the dysregulation of nicotinic receptor-cholesterol crosstalk plays a role in some of the neurological alterations observed in ASD.
