Quality of Nursing Care as Perceived by Patients Treated for Multiple Myeloma in Polish Oncology Units: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Patient satisfaction is one of the indicators of the quality of nursing care. The purpose of this study is to find out the level of satisfaction of patients with multiple myeloma with the quality of nursing care in oncology units. Methods: Data were obtained by a diagnostic survey method, using the Newcastle Nursing Satisfaction Scale. The survey was conducted among patients from four oncology departments in Poland on the day the patient was discharged or transferred to another unit. Participation in the study was voluntary and required patient consent. Patients were assured of the anonymity of their responses. Results: The study included 65 men and 75 women treated with chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Experiences and satisfaction with nursing care presented a level of 71.80 points and 74.46 points, respectively. The analysis showed no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of treatment and gender. A statistically significant negative association was shown between age and nursing care experience score (r = -0.19; p = 0.024). Positive associations were shown between length of stay on the unit and rating of experience of nursing care (r = 0.23; p = 0.006) and satisfaction with nursing care (r = 0.26; p = 0.002). Conclusions: The experience and satisfaction with nursing care among patients treated for multiple myeloma in Polish oncology units is moderate. Efforts should be made to improve the quality of nursing care, especially taking into account the needs of the elderly.

The relationship between the quality of oncology nursing care and the resiliency and hope of patients with cancer: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Patients with cancer require emotional support in addition to specialised medical treatments for their physical ailments. The quality of nursing care, resilience and hope can influence a person's cancer trajectory, and understanding these factors and their relationship can be influential in improving the process for these patients.

AIM

This study examined the relationship between the quality of oncology nursing care and resilience and hope in patients with cancer.

METHODS

The present study is a descriptive analytics study conducted on 160 patients with cancer from April-August 2023. The data collection tools included four questionnaires: a demographic information questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RSC), the Snyder Hope Scale, and the Oncology Nursing Care Quality Scale. The data were analysed using SPSS version 22 statistical software.

RESULTS

In examining the relationship between demographic 'variables' and 'resilience', marital status and place of residence had statistically significant correlations (P<0.05). Place of residence, education level, job and first cancer treatment (P=0.004) had statistically significant correlations with hope (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant relationship between the quality of oncology nursing (QON) and its domain with two variables: 'resilience' (P=0.76) and 'hope' (P=0.37). However, a statistically significant relationship existed between the variables 'resilience' and 'hope' (P<0.001). The linear regression model results showed that among the entered demographic variables, only the variable 'hope' predicted resilience (P<0.001; R=27%). Additionally, the 'resilience' variables (P<0.001) and the 'first cancer treated' variable (P=0.001; R=34%) were predictors of 'hope'.

CONCLUSION

Given the interrelationship between 'resilience' and 'hope' for patients with cancer, it is necessary to focus on the factors that impact these qualities. In addition, paying attention to the concept of resilience can improve the level of hope in patients with cancer. Based on the results, it is recommended that interventions to increase QON in patients with cancer be planned and implemented.

Psychometric Characteristics of the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale (QONCS): A Validation Study

OBJECTIVES

Quality care in healthcare settings shortens hospitalization, reduces infection rates and complication risks, and improves patients' ability to manage their symptoms. Due to the absence of tools for assessing care quality in Italian oncology settings, this study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale (QONCS).

METHODS

The study comprised 4 phases. Phase I involved cultural adaptation of the QONCS following Brislin's model. In phase II, 6 external experts assessed the instrument's face and content validities. In phase III, a cross-sectional study was conducted at 3 hospitals from February to September 2023. In phase IV, factor analyses were performed using exploratory structural equation modeling.

RESULTS

The 5-dimensional structure of the adapted QONCS showed a good fit based on the following statistics: χ2 (324, N = 219) = 704.690, P < .001; root mean square error of approximation = 0.059 (90% confidence interval [CI] = 0.52-0.66), P < .001; comparative fit index = 0.935; Tucker-Lewis index = 0.908; standardized root mean square residual = 0.026. McDonald's ω (0.968) indicated satisfactory internal consistency. The test-retest reliability demonstrated a high and significant positive correlation. Correlation analysis revealed that age, marital status, and employment status were significantly and positively associated with the QONCS score.

CONCLUSION

This study confirms the validity and reliability of the QONCS. We recommend using the QONCS to thoroughly assess nursing care quality and identify factors that influence the delivery of high-quality care in oncology settings.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Our findings highlight the value of the QONCS in helping nurses assess and improve perceived care quality among patients with cancer. Valid and reliable tools, such as the QONCS, are crucial for guiding policies to enhance patient care.

Determinants of quality of life among Omani family caregivers of adult patients with cancer pain

OBJECTIVES

The study aimed to explore the determinants of quality of life (QoL) among Omani family caregivers (FCGs) of adult patients with cancer pain.

METHODS

A descriptive cross-sectional design, measures of caregiver reaction, knowledge about cancer pain, self-efficacy for cancer pain and other symptom management, QoL, and patient functional status were used to collect data from 165 FCGs and patients. Descriptive, correlation, and regression analyses were performed.

RESULTS

Most patients had intermittent (83%) and severe (50.9%) cancer pain. The FCGs had low QoL (58.44 ± 17.95), and this mostly impacted support and positive adaptation (55.2%). Low QoL was associated with low self-rated health, low confidence in the ability to control the patient's pain, low self-efficacy, high perceived distress due to patient pain, and a high impact of caregiving on physical health. The level of caregiver distress due to the patient's pain (p < 0.01), patient's functional status (p < 0.01), and perceived impact of caregiving on health (p < 0.05) were significant predictors of overall QoL.

CONCLUSION

Omani FCGs of patients with cancer pain suffer a negative impact on their QoL, and this is related to the patient's level of pain and functional status, caregiver's health, and self-efficacy in cancer pain and symptom management. The FCGs' QoL may be enhanced by augmenting their skills and self-efficacy in cancer pain and symptom management and by health promotion programs.

Patients' Perception of Quality Nursing Care and Services in Emergency Department in Jordan

Patients are the main users of every hospital service particularly the emergency department. Hence, patients' perception is one of the quality care measures. Thus, this study purposed to assess the patients' perception of quality nursing care and services in emergency department in Jordan. A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was adopted on a sample of patients who attended the emergency department (N = 427). Findings demonstrated that most of the health sectors in Jordan had a high level of patients' perception of quality nursing care and related emergency department services (M = 3.93, SD = 0.72). Furthermore, the private sector had the highest mean score (M = 4.18, SD= 0.70), while the government sector had the lowest mean (M = 3.11, SD= 0.38). The level of perception had positive relationship with income (r = 0.097; p < 0.05) and qualifications (r p.b = 0.093; p < 0.05). The number of visits showed a significant negative correlation with patients' perception level (r = - 0.095; p < 0.05). Thus, there is a need for improving the quality of nursing care and services in the emergency department at hospitals by strengthening the policy and enhancing the nursing services supporting system. Establishing plans to develop the infrastructures, equipment, physical environment, sanitation, and facilities in the emergency department to meet the patients' needs to enhance the quality of care and services are needed.
