Thai Nurses' Experiences of Spiritual Care for Older Adults at End of Life

Finnish Palliative Care Nurses' and Physicians' Perceptions of Spirituality and Spiritual Care Related to Their Attitudes toward End-of-Life Care

Background

Spiritual care constitutes an indispensable aspect of palliative care (PC). Health care professionals encounter challenges when addressing spiritual care at the end of life. Developing appropriate attitudes toward end-of-life care can facilitate the acquisition of competencies needed for effective delivery of spiritual care.

Aim

To explore the perceptions of spiritual care and attitudes toward end-of-life care among PC professionals.

Design

The Finnish version of the "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale" (SSCRS-FIN) and a newly developed "Attitudes toward End-of-Life Issues" (AEOLI) questionnaire were validated and utilized.

Setting/Participants

Both questionnaires were distributed to PC professionals involved in PC through an online survey. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The newly derived factors were subsequently examined for their associations with age, gender, profession, affiliation with a religious community, personal interpretation of spirituality, and years of professional experience.

Results

A total of 204 participants took part in the study (163 nurses, 19 nursing students, and 22 physicians). Exploratory factor analysis demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, as indicated by Cronbach's alpha coefficients, for the five factors of SSCRS-FIN: "Spirituality" (0.733), "Existential" (0.614), "Spiritual Needs" (0.599), "Passive Spiritual Care" (0.750), and "Active Spiritual Care" (0.665); and for the seven factors of AEOLI: "Anxiety" (0.823), "Discussion" (0.924), "End-of-Life" (0.573), "Education" (0.692), "Medically Induced Death" (0.859), "Suffering" (0.671), and "Knowledge" (0.444). Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated satisfactory fit values for both questionnaires. Significant positive correlations were observed between end-of-life care and the factors "Existential," "Spiritual Needs," and spiritual care factors, whereas an inverse correlation was found among "Anxiety," "Medically Induced Death," and all factors of SSCRS-FIN.

Conclusions

Valid and reliable questionnaires for assessing spiritual care (SSCRS-FIN) and attitudes toward end-of-life care (AEOLI) were developed. Attitudes toward end-of-life care were positively correlated with perceptions of spiritual care.

Nurses' models of spiritual care: A cross-sectional survey of American nurses

OBJECTIVES

Despite there being many models for how spiritual care should be provided, the way nurses actually provide spiritual care often differs from these models. Based on the premise that the way a person enacts their work role is related to how they understand that role, this study aims to describe the qualitatively different ways that nurses understand their spiritual care role.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 66 American nurses completed an anonymous, online questionnaire about what spiritual care means for them and what they generally do to provide spiritual care. Their responses were analyzed phenomenographically.

RESULTS

Four qualitatively different ways of understanding emerged: active management of the patient's experience, responsive facilitation of patient's wishes, accompaniment on the patient's dying journey, and empowering co-action with the patient. Each understanding was found to demonstrate a specific combination of 5 attributes that described the spiritual care role: nurse directivity, the cues used for spiritual assessment, and the nurse's perception of intimacy, the patient, and the task.

SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS

The findings of this study may explain why nurses vary in their spiritual care role and can be used to assess and develop competence in spiritual care.

The Knowledge, Practices, and Perceptions of Surgical Nurses Concerning Spirituality and Spiritual Care

PURPOSE

The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the knowledge, practices and perceptions of nurses concerning spirituality and spiritual care.

DESIGN

A descriptive study.

METHODS

The study was performed with 142 surgical nurses working in three public hospitals in a city in Turkey. A "Personal Information Form" and the "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Grading Scale" were used for data collection. The data were analysed on SPSS 25.0 software.

FINDINGS

While 77.5% of the nurses reported having heard about the concepts of spirituality and spiritual care, 17.6% reported having received instruction concerning spirituality and spiritual care during their initial nursing education and 19.0% after graduation. In addition, 78.2% provided spiritual care in the clinics where they worked, 40.5% reported that patients were given religious support and 37.8% stated that patients were given the opportunity to be involved in their own care. The nurses' total mean spirituality and spiritual care grading scale score was 57.6±5.6. A statistically significant difference was determined in mean scale scores between nurses who had and had not heard about the concepts of spirituality and spiritual care (P=0.049) and between those who practiced and did not practice spiritual care in the clinics where they worked (P=0.018).

CONCLUSIONS

The majority of surgical nurses had heard about the concepts of spirituality and spiritual care but had not been exposed to them during their initial nursing education. However, the majority practiced spiritual care in their clinics, and their perception levels were above average.
