Abstract
BACKGROUND Research reveals that neonatal pain management in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is suboptimal. There is limited research that assessed NICU nurses' pain assessment practices in Saudi Arabia. AIM To assess the nurses' pain assessment practices in the NICU in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. SETTINGS Research was conducted using an online survey. PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS This study was carried out on 65 NICU nurses. The participants were recruited from one governmental and one private hospital in Saudi Arabia. METHODS Data on pain assessment practices were collected, including the frequency of pain assessment, pain assessment scales used for preterm and term neonates, and pain assessment documentation. Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. RESULTS The majority of the participants (94%) routinely assessed pain and documented pain assessment (97%). One-third of the participants assessed pain regularly every hour (32%). The most used pain assessment scales for term neonates were the neonatal infant pain scale (40%) and the cry, required oxygen, increased vital signs, expression, and sleeplessness scale (23%). The most used pain assessment scales for preterm neonates were the neonatal infant pain scale (31%), the cry, required oxygen, increased vital signs, expression, sleeplessness scale (19%), and the premature infant pain profile (17%). CONCLUSIONS NICU nurses in Saudi Arabia consistently assessed for and documented pain; however, the tools chosen were sometimes suboptimal. A substantial number of NICU nurses used invalid tools to assess pain in term and preterm neonates. An interventional program is needed to enhance the use of evidence-based practice recommendations regarding neonatal pain assessment by nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE it was to explore the influence of the postoperative pain management mode on the psychological state, quality of life (QOL), and nursing satisfaction of late patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and improve the nursing effect of late patients in the ICU. METHODS seventy patients who were admitted to the postoperative ICU for gastric cancer and received treatment in our hospital from March 2021 to May 2022 were selected. The patients were assigned into a research group and a control (Ctrl) group according to a random number table, with 70 cases in each group. The Ctrl group received routine nursing intervention, while research group received nursing intervention based on routine nursing intervention with postoperative pain management mode and received psychological care. Good communication was established with the patients, and the postoperative pain assessment was well conducted. The general information, state-trait anxiety (STAI) score, World Health Organization's Quality of Life Instrument (WHO QOL-BREF) score, and care satisfaction were compared. RESULTS the general information differed slightly, such as sex, age, and ward type, between groups, with comparability (P > 0.05). S-AI scores (13.15 ± 1.53 vs. 16.23 ± 1.24) and T-AI scores (14.73 ± 3.12 vs. 18.73 ± 3.16) in research group were inferior to those in Ctrl group (P < 0.05). The scores of patients in research group in the physiological field (78.9 ± 6.1 points vs. 72.3 ± 5.6 points), social relationship field (76.9 ± 4.5 points vs. 71.3 ± 4.8 points), psychological field (78.6 ± 6.2 points vs. 72.4 ± 5.3 points), environmental field (78.6 ± 6.7 points vs. 73.5 ± 6.4 points), and total QOL (79.5 ± 7.4 points vs. 71.6 ± 5.4 points) were higher than those in Ctrl group (P < 0.05). The total satisfaction rate with nursing care in research group (82.85%) was dramatically superior to that in Ctrl group (62.85%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION the adoption of a postoperative pain management model in postoperative nursing interventions for patients in advanced ICUs can alleviate anxiety and depression, improve patients' QOL and nursing satisfaction, and have clinical promotion value.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonatal nurses should provide timely and high-quality palliative care whenever necessary. It's necessary to investigate the knowledge, attitude and behavior of palliative care among neonatal nurses, to provide references and evidences for clinical palliative care. METHODS Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses in a tertiary hospital of China were selected from December 1 to 16, 2022. The palliative care knowledge, attitude and behavior questionnaire was used to evaluate the current situation of palliative nursing knowledge, attitude and behavior of NICU nurses. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the influencing factors. RESULTS 122 nurses were finally included. The average score of knowledge in neonatal nurses was 7.68 ± 2.93, the average score of attitude was 26.24 ± 7.11, the score of behavior was 40.55 ± 8.98, the average total score was 74.03 ± 10.17. Spearman correlation indicated that score of knowledge, attitude and behavior of palliative care in neonatal nurses were correlated with the age(r = 0.541), year of work experience(r = 0.622) and professional ranks and titles(r = 0.576) (all P < 0.05). Age (OR = 1.515, 95%CI: 1.204 ~ 1.796), year of work experience (OR = 2.488, 95%CI: 2.003 ~ 2.865) and professional ranks and titles (OR = 2.801, 95%CI: 2.434 ~ 3.155) were the influencing factors of score of knowledge, attitude and behavior of palliative care (all P < 0.05). PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION NICU nurses have a positive attitude towards palliative care, but the practical behavior of palliative care is less and lack of relevant knowledge. Targeted training should be carried out combined with the current situation of knowledge, attitude and practice of NICU nurses to improve the palliative care ability and quality of NICU nurses.

Abstract
AIM(S) Organizational culture has been studied for over four decades among nurses, across countries and contexts. However, wide variation exists in how the concept has been defined and at what level of the organization it is measured. The aim of this study was to use a dimensional analysis to conduct a conceptual synthesis of unit culture from a nursing perspective. DESIGN Dimensional analysis, rooted in grounded theory methodology, was used to describe unit culture from a nursing perspective. METHODS A literature search was conducted in April 2022. Inclusion criteria were (1) peer review publications, (2) used the term 'unit culture' or 'ward culture', (3) references nurses' role in unit culture, (4) published in the last 20 years and (5) written in English. One hundred fifteen articles met inclusion criteria, but dimensional saturation was researched after coding 24 articles. RESULTS Findings were synthesized into four core dimensions and 10 subdimensions. Dimensions of unit culture included customs (practice norms, communication and prioritization), shared beliefs (assumptions, values and attitudes), hierarchy (social and informational) and atmosphere (emotional climate and collaboration). Conditions that shape unit culture include individual nurse characteristics, working conditions, unit policies/procedures and leadership. Unit culture impacts nurse work experiences and decision-making processes, which can affect outcomes including nurse wellbeing, practice behaviours and adherence to unit policies. CONCLUSIONS Identifying the dimensions of unit culture helps to bring clarity to a concept that is not well defined in existing literature. IMPACT This model of unit culture can be used to guide development of new instruments to measure unit culture or guide researchers in utilizing existing measures. Developing measures specific to unit culture are warranted to strengthen researchers' ability to assess how changing conditions of a unit (e.g. leadership, workload) changes unit culture and its related outcomes. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the experiences of nurses as they learned to provide palliative care in the NICU. DESIGN Interpretive description. SETTING Four NICUs in three Canadian provinces, including one rural center and three tertiary centers. PARTICIPANTS Nine NICU nurses with 3 to 21 years of experience who provided neonatal palliative care. METHODS We collected data using online interviews that we recorded and transcribed. We analyzed data using immersion, inductive coding, reflective memoing, and thematic analysis. RESULTS Participants received little or no formal education in neonatal palliative care and instead learned to provide this care through observation and experience. Participants said it was important to find meaning in their work, which contributed to their motivation to learn to provide high-quality neonatal palliative care. Participants described challenges, including unit cultures in which early palliative care was not embraced. We identified three overarching themes that represented the participants' experiences: Meaning-Making in Neonatal Palliative Care, Challenges in Providing Neonatal Palliative Care, and Ill-Prepared to Provide Neonatal Palliative Care. CONCLUSION Standardized education may improve the quality of care and nurses' experiences with neonatal palliative care. We recommend designing and evaluating a standardized curriculum on neonatal palliative care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses with adequate neonatal pain assessment knowledge are crucial in effective neonatal pain management. There is limited research that assessed the knowledge of NICU nurses in Saudi Arabia regarding neonatal pain assessment. OBJECTIVE To assess the knowledge of NICU nurses in Saudi Arabia regarding neonatal pain assessment. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional design using an online survey was conducted to capture information regarding neonatal pain assessment knowledge from 125 NICU nurses in Saudi Arabia. Knowledge of pain assessment was assessed using a modified version of the knowledge, attitudes, and practice scale. Knowledge scores were classified as high, average, and low. RESULTS Participants' knowledge regarding neonatal pain assessment was inadequate (Mean = 63/100). The majority of the participants had a low to average level of knowledge (n= 97, 78%). CONCLUSION A significant proportion of NICU nurses had inadequate knowledge regarding neonatal pain assessment, which can be improved. Educational interventions are needed to boost these nurses' knowledge regarding neonatal pain assessment.

Abstract
Nurses in NICUs report insufficient education as a persistent barrier to providing quality neonatal palliative care (NPC). Since existing literature on educational interventions in NPC is limited, this review aimed to identify and narratively synthesize literature both about nurses' attitudes toward NPC and the NPC education received by nurses. We conducted a nonsystematic narrative literature review. Four themes were identified from the 28 articles included in this review. These were as follows: (a) nursing work in NPC, (b) NICU nurses' experiences and perceptions of NPC, (c) facilitators and barriers to nursing work in NPC, and (d) educational interventions in NPC. This literature review identified studies about NICU nurses' experiences and education in providing NPC. NICU nurses both desired and lacked education in NPC. This literature review identifies the importance of developing and evaluating NPC education for nurses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective was to conduct a systematic review describing the competencies required from nurses working in neonatal intensive care settings. DESIGN Systematic review. DATA SOURCES A total of eight databases, including PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Mednar, Web of Science, ProQuest and Medic, were screened for relevant literature during February and September 2022. REVIEW METHODS The systematic review process followed Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. The inclusion criteria were: 1) (P = population) registered nurses; 2) (C = concept) the competence; 3) (C = context) nursing in neonatal intensive care units; and 4) cross-sectional study as study method. A critical appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies from Joanna Briggs Institute was used by two independent reviewers. After data extraction, thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS The database searches yielded a total of 8887 studies and after two independent evaluations, a total of 50 eligible studies were identified comprising of 7536 registered nurses working in neonatal intensive care units across 19 countries. The studies described four main competence themes: 1) neonatal care interventions; 2) caring for a dying infant; 3) family-centered care; and 4) neonatal intensive care interventions. CONCLUSION Previous research has focused on evaluating specific competencies that are necessary in the neonatal intensive care setting. There is a need for research concerning the overall competence of nurses working in neonatal intensive care units. There was a lot of variety within the quality of the eligible studies and within the used instruments. PROTOCOL REGISTRATION This systematic review was registered in Prospero (PROSPERO 2022 CRD42022308028).

Abstract
Aim To review studies regarding neonatal nurses' knowledge and attitude toward neonatal palliative care (NPC). Method The researchers searched internet sources such as Google Scholar for NPC, Nurses, Knowledge, Attitude, and Educational Intervention. Results Subheadings identified in the literature review were Nurses Knowledge toward NPC in NICU, Nurses Attitude toward NPC in NICU, correlation between Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC in NICU, The Effect of Educational program on Nurses Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC in NICU, and the Predictors of Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC among Nurses in NICU and Barriers to NPC provision and improvement. Conclusion There are few studies from different nations regarding NPC found nurses have an inadequate knowledge of NPC, which also reflects their attitude.

Abstract
<b>Aim:</b> The objective of this study is examining the impact of an educational interventions in improving knowledge and attitudes towards neonatal palliative care (NPC)among nurses in Jordan.<br />
<b>Method: </b>A pre-post-test design was used to examine the efficacy of an educational program nurses’ knowledge and attitude toward NPC. Almost 164 nurses participated in the study, 82 intervention groups and 82 control groups.<br />
<b>Results: </b>The overall NPC mean knowledge score for the control group was 30.60 (SD=4.01) and for the intervention group was 73.85 (SD=5.78). The control group’s mean attitude for the NPC score is 88.94 (SD=14.45), whereas the intervention group’s is 82.13 (SD=10.59). There was also a substantial favorable effect of education program on nurses’ knowledge and attitude regarding NPC. Furthermore, there was no influence of characteristics on nurses’ knowledge and attitude regarding NPC.<br />
<b>Conclusion:</b> Depending on the findings of this study, the NPC educational program is beneficial in improving nurse knowledge and attitudes for NPC services, as well as providing an effective educational program for nurses. With the rising demand for NPC services with chronic critical illnesses and the documented good impact of NPC services on neonates in need and their families, it became imperative to improve the nurse’s knowledge and attitude toward NPC.

Abstract
End-of-life (EOL) care for newborns is challenging and requires well-prepared nurses to provide the best care for the dying baby and to prepare and support parents during such a difficult experience. This study aimed to explore Jordanian neonatal intensive care unit nurses' perceptions and needs regarding the provision of EOL care. This study used an exploratory descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted among a sample of 12 Jordanian neonatal intensive care unit nurses. Semistructured interviews were conducted to allow the nurses to describe their personal experiences and express their needs related to the provision of EOL care. Two main themes and 6 subthemes emerged from the analysis process. Main themes were (1) the challenges related to the provision of EOL care, and (2) nurses' needs: what matters most. The findings of this study shed light on neonatal care unit nurses' experiences and needs related to the provision of EOL care. The results of this study may be used to develop EOL care guidelines, programs, and protocols to be applied in intensive care units.

Abstract
Neonatal nurses in mainland China encounter various challenges when it comes to delivering palliative care to neonates. The aim of this study was to determine the barriers and facilitators of neonatal nurses' attitudes to palliative care for neonates in mainland China. A simplified Chinese version of the Neonatal Palliative Care Attitude Scale was piloted, administered, and analyzed using survey methods. Nurses in neonatal intensive care units in mainland China regardless of experience in the field were invited to take part in. Over a five-month period in 2019, we surveyed neonatal nurses from 40 hospitals in five provinces of China. The response rate was 92.5% (N = 550). This study identified eight facilitators and four barriers to neonatal palliative care implementation. In terms of nurses' attitudes on providing palliative care, younger and older nurses were more positive, whereas middle-aged nurses were less so. Nurses' emotional wellbeing was rarely impacted by neonatal death. They considered neonatal palliative care, particularly pain management, to be just as important as curative treatment. Parents were invited to participate in decision-making by nurses. Nurses reported having access to professional counseling and talking about their concerns with other healthcare professionals. The following barriers to neonatal palliative care were identified in this study that were not observed in the original English version scale research in 2009: a lack of clinicians, time, clinical skills, systematic education, neonatal palliative care experience, and social acceptance. Future research is required to investigate each barrier in order to improve the implementation of neonatal palliative care in mainland China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The provision of palliative care for neonates who are not expected to survive has been slow in mainland China, and this model of care remains in its early stages. Evaluating nurses' attitudes toward neonatal palliative care (NPC) has the potential to provide valuable insight into barriers impeding NPC implementation. This study aimed to translate and adapt the traditional Chinese version of the Neonatal Palliative Care Attitude Scale (NiPCAS) into Simplified Chinese to assess its psychometric properties. METHODS The NiPCAS is a valid and reliable instrument to measure nurses' attitudes for evidence-based practice. To date, the scale has not been used largely in mainland China. With translation and cultural adaptation, the traditional Chinese version of the NiPCAS was developed into a Simplified Chinese version. Its reliability was tested using internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and its validity was measured using the content validity index and exploratory factor analysis. RESULTS A total of 595 neonatal nurses from mainland China were recruited. Twenty-six items in the scale were translated into Simplified Chinese. The scale demonstrated excellent reliability with a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.87 and a test-retest reliability of 0.88. To support the Simplified Chinese version of NiPCAS, the scale content validity score was 0.98, and the exploratory factor analysis revealed five factors representing the conceptual dimensions of the scale. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the psychometric properties of the Simplified Chinese version of NiPCAS, validated its use as a viable tool for measuring neonatal nurses' attitudes toward NPC, and identified facilitators and barriers to NPC adoption. Our findings suggested supported clinical application in the context of mainland China. A confirmatory factor-analysis approach with a different sample of neonatal nurses is required for further testing of the instrument in the future.
