Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multifaceted neurodegenerative disorder characterized by predominantly motor symptoms. However, recent research has broadened our understanding of PD by revealing its impact on non-motor functions, including ocular manifestations. This review explored the intricate relationship between PD and ocular health, shedding light on the mechanisms underlying common ocular diseases such as dry eye disease, cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. It also underscores the importance of recognizing ocular manifestations as potential early markers of PD, as well as their impact on patients' daily activities, necessitating prompt identification and intervention to prevent complications and enhance the overall quality of life. Furthermore, future research should prioritize unraveling the potential association between PD and other prevalent ocular diseases, such as myopia, to formulate effective treatment strategies.

Abstract
The lacrimal gland (LG) is vital for ocular health, producing tears that lubricate and protect the eye. Dysfunction of the LG leads to aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (DED), significantly impacting quality of life. Current treatments mainly address symptoms rather than the underlying LG dysfunction, highlighting the need for regenerative therapies. Tissue engineering offers a promising solution, with biomaterials playing crucial roles in scaffolding and supporting cell growth for LG regeneration. This review focuses on recent advances in biomaterials used for tissue engineering of the lacrimal gland. We discuss both natural and synthetic biomaterials that mimic the extracellular matrix and provide structural support for cell proliferation and differentiation. Natural biomaterials, such as Matrigel, decellularized extracellular matrices, chitosan, silk fibroin hydrogels, and human amniotic membrane are evaluated for their biocompatibility and ability to support lacrimal gland cells. Synthetic biomaterials, like polyethersulfone, polyesters, and biodegradable polymers (PLLA and PLGA), are assessed for their mechanical properties and potential to create scaffolds that replicate the complex architecture of the LG. We also explore the integration of growth factors and stem cells with these biomaterials to enhance tissue regeneration. Challenges such as achieving proper vascularization, innervation, and long-term functionality of engineered tissues are discussed. Advances in 3D bioprinting and scaffold fabrication techniques are highlighted as promising avenues to overcome current limitations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent ocular surface disease that is conventionally characterized by tear film hyperosmolarity and instability. This review presents a summarized classification of DED, followed by a comprehensive discussion of the most recent topical and systemic medications and clinical recommendations for selecting the most appropriate option for each patient. METHODS An extensive literature search was conducted on electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using keywords including "dry eye syndrome," "ocular surface disease," "medical management," "artificial tears," "topical immunomodulators," and "meibomian gland dysfunction." RESULTS The underlying reasons for DED can range from insufficient aqueous tear production to increased tear evaporation. Recent literature has provided a more in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of DED by examining the tear film's lipid, aqueous, and mucin layers. However, despite these advancements, medical management of patients with symptomatic DED has not fully reflected this modernized knowledge of its pathophysiology. CONCLUSION To develop a rationalized strategy for treating DED, it is crucial to have updated knowledge of therapeutic options, their mechanisms of actions, and indications based on the DED type and underlying causes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Managing dry eye disease (DED) is expensive. Often, prescribed treatments improve clinical signs but not patient-reported symptoms. In large surveys, clinicians and patients ranked environmental and behavioral modifications among the most important DED-related research priorities. Our purpose was to investigate the barriers to and facilitators of use of these modifications by patients with DED in the United States and how their use may be impacted by socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS Using Qualtrics, we conducted an anonymous online survey of adults with DED living in the United States in August to September 2022. Patients were identified through the Dry Eye Foundation, Sjögren's Foundation, and a DED clinic in Colorado. We used an established index for classifying respondent SES based on education, household income, and employment. Outcomes included use of environmental and behavioral modifications and barriers to and facilitators of their use. RESULTS We included 754 respondents (SES: 382 low, 275 high, and 97 unclear). Most were aged 18 to 49 years (67%), female (68%), and White (76%) and reported dealing with DED for ≤5 years (67%). The most frequent modifications were taking breaks to rest eyes (68%), increasing water intake (68%), and using hot/cold compresses (52%). For these three, the biggest facilitators were as follows: belief that the modification works (27 to 37%), being recommended it (24 to 26%), and ease of use/performance (21 to 32%). Across modifications, the biggest barriers were difficulty of use (55%), lack of family/employer/social/community support (33%), and lack of awareness (32%). The data do not suggest discernible patterns of differences in barriers or facilitators by SES. CONCLUSIONS Greater emphasis should be placed on explaining to patients how environmental and behavioral modifications might mitigate DED. Employers and members of patients' support systems should be guided regarding how best to support patients in managing DED symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of refractive surgery-related dry eye disease (DED) is rising due to the increasing popularity of corneal refractive surgery. The moisture chamber goggles (MCGs) have been shown to tear evaporation by increasing local humidity and minimizing airflow. The current study aims to evaluate the efficacy of moisture chamber goggles for refractive surgery-related DED. METHODS In this nonrandomized open-label controlled study, 78 participants (156 eyes) receiving refractive surgery were enrolled between July 2021 and April 2022, and sequentially allocated to MGC and control groups. 39 participants were allocated to the MGC groups, of which 53.8% received small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and 46.2% received femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), and were instructed to wear MCGs for the duration of 1 month postoperatively, in addition to the standard postoperative treatment received by the control groups (56.4% SMILE, 43.6% FS-LASIK). Participants underwent full ophthalmic examinations, including visual acuity, manifest refraction, DED evaluations, and higher-order aberrations (HOAs), both preoperatively and at routine follow-ups 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after surgery. DED parameters included non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), conjunctival congestion, lipid layer thickness (LLT), and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaires. Student's t-test was used for comparisons between control and MCG groups, and between preoperative and postoperative parameters within groups. RESULTS Postoperative NIBUT decreased in both SMILE and FS-LASIK control groups 1 day after the surgery (SMILE, P = 0.001; FS-LASIK, P = 0.008), but not in the corresponding MCG groups (SMILE, P = 0.097; FS-LASIK, P = 0.331). TMH in the MCG group was significantly higher at 1 week (P = 0.039) and 1 month (P = 0.015) in SMILE, and 1 day (P = 0.003) in FS-LASIK groups. In FS-LASIK participants, significantly lower HOAs and coma levels in the MCG group were observed 1 day (total HOAs, P = 0.023; coma, P = 0.004) and 1 week (total HOAs, P = 0.010, coma, P = 0.004) after surgery. No consistent statistically significant intergroup difference was observed between MCG and control groups in conjunctival congestion, LLT, and OSDI. CONCLUSIONS MCGs effectively slowed tear evaporation, increased tear film stability, and improved HOAs in patients receiving SMILE and FS-LASIK surgeries. MCG is an effective adjuvant therapy in the comprehensive management of refractive surgery-related DED.

Abstract
In Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, a wide range of ocular and visual disorders are present. Tear film instability, inflammation and dysfunction of the ocular surface, and the presence of symptoms of visual disturbance characterize dry eye, a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface. Based on a literature search, we discuss the frequency, pathogenesis, and influence on the quality of life of patients with dry eye in Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, we review the available means of diagnosis and management of dry eye. An improvement in awareness and recognition of dry eye is needed to provide suitable, personalized therapeutic options for PD patients, aiming to improve their quality of life, independence, and safety.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study is to demonstrate the prevalence of self-reported mask-associated dry eye (MADE) in health-care professionals and the possible risk factors that give rise to MADE. METHODS A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 12 questions about MADE and possible risk factors that give rise to MADE was created on web-based "google forms" application, and was then sent to 437 healthcare professionals working in a coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic hospital, using common telecommunication devices. RESULTS Three hundred and thirty-three of the 437 health-care professionals, who answered the questionnaire, were included in the study. The prevalence of self-reported MADE among these health-care professionals was found to be 70% (n = 233). Having at least one of the symptoms of dry eye while not having a mask on and advanced age were determined as the possible risk factors for MADE (p = .02 and p < .001, respectively). The clinical examinations of the 195 participants, who had self-reported MADE and accepted the invitation to undergo a clinical evaluation with respect to the symptoms of MADE, revealed that only 60 (30.7%) of these participants had aqueous-type dryness with staining on the ocular surface with fluorescein. CONCLUSION The high prevalence of self-reported MADE among health-care professionals can be attributed to the prolonged use of masks associated with longer working hours. Therefore, it is important that the ocular complaints of professionals are addressed by ophthalmology consultants/ophthalmologists during these difficult times.

Abstract
Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is characterized as an autoimmune disorder targeting secretory glands, including the lacrimal and salivary glands, causing dry eye and dry mouth predominantly in women over the age of 40. In this review, we summarize recent advancements in SS diagnostics, treatments, and our understanding of correlations between oral and ocular manifestations of SS. Google Scholar and PubMed databases were utilized to search peer-reviewed papers since 2016 on SS diagnosis, treatment, and correlations between oral and ocular manifestations. For diagnostics, we discuss the updated SS classification criteria by the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR), new biomarkers, and compare studies of current diagnostic methods with alternative technologies. For treatments, we discuss topical, systemic, and surgical treatment developments in the management of oral and ocular symptoms of SS as there is still no cure for the disorder. Finally, we report studies that directly suggest correlations between the ocular surface disease and oral disease in SS, as well as shared abnormalities in the microbiome and cytokine expression that may be correlated. We conclude by stating limitations to our review as well as paths moving forward. Elucidating correlations between oral and ocular manifestations may be the key to furthering our understanding of SS pathogenesis as well as defining new standards for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dry Eye Disease (DED) is defined as a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and a vicious cycle of inflammation on the ocular surface. Despite its high prevalence and standing as one of the most common eye conditions seen by practitioners, the current treatment options available to patients have not proven adequate. AREAS COVERED This review will discuss the burden of DED, its pathophysiology, as well as emerging therapies. These therapies include immunosuppressants, immunomodulators, anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteroids. The mechanisms of these drugs will be discussed, as well as their phase of development and results from recent clinical trials. The literature search was performed using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the Springer AdisInsight database. EXPERT OPINION The optimal therapy for DED is associated with improved bioavailability, minimal ocular side effects, and effective dosing. The ideal treatment has not yet been established, but this paper outlines a number of promising therapies. Continued development of therapies targeting the inflammation cascade, as well as the establishment of objective markers to quantify DED severity, are important aspects in the progression of treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to survey the prevalence of dry eye symptoms (DES) among doctors and nurses in the period of 2019, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.To evaluate the DES of doctors and nurses worked at front-line hospitals with protective glasses for a mean time of 4 to 6 hours, a questionnaire developed by the researchers with the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) was used. These data were evaluated using descriptive statistics and correlation test with SPSS 22.0.The study included 13 doctors and 40 nurses, among which 16 were male and 37 were female, and the mean age of the participants was 32.43 ± 5.15 years old. According to the OSDI scores, 64.15, 24.52, 7.54, and 3.77% of the participants experienced occasional, mild, moderate, and severe DES, respectively. The factors significantly correlated with OSDI scores were age and duration of wearing protective glasses, while the duration of wearing protective glasses may be a protective factor of dry eye symptoms.Our study showed that most of the doctors and nurses worked at the front-line of combating COVID-19 did not experience DES, while the symptoms of those who experienced DES might be improved by wearing protective glasses.

Abstract
Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) pollution has previously associated with dry eye symptoms but without detailed experimental data and elucidation of the mechanism. We aimed to evaluate the effects of CS on the ocular surfaces of mice and the extraction of DMSO lipid-soluble cigarette smoke particles (DCSP) on cultured human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs), and explore to elucidate the probable mechanism. C57BL mice were exposed to CS challenging. In vivo clinical evaluations, including corneal fluorescein staining, tear film break-up time, and confocal microscopic observations, were performed before exposure and post-exposure. At the end of the in vivo study, changes in corneal and conjunctival histology, corneal ultrastructure, and conjunctival goblet cell intensity were examined, expression of TUNLE and Ki67 in tissue were also detected. In vitro, cell confluence and caspase3/7 were assessed in DCSP treated HCECs. Production of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6, activation of NF-κB and Ki67 were evaluated by means of ELISA and Western blot respectively in HCECs cultured with 0.6 μL/mL DCSP. We found that longer-term CS exposure induced dry eye symptoms in mice. Additionally, corneal and conjunctival epithelial damage occurred, the corneal ultrastructure changed, and the density of goblet cells decreased. Apoptosis and Ki67 increased in both the conjunctiva and the cornea of CS-exposed animals. Furthermore, although DCSP inhibited the proliferation of HCECs, expression of Ki67 increased and apoptosis was only induced significantly by 2.0 μL/mL DCSP. The release of IL-1β and IL-6, activation of NF-κB were prompted by DCSP. The results indicated that CS is toxic to the ocular surface of mice and HCECs. Longer-term CS exposure in mice stimulates ocular surface changes that resemble those observed with dry eye. The mechanism may relate to inflammation and activation of NF-κB. In this study, we established a novel animal model to study dry eye, with the experimental data and elucidation of mechanism facilitating further research.

Abstract
Currently, the available treatment for dry eye disease (DED) varies. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of undiagnosed DED and patient-based self-care management for DED based on a web-based survey performed for Tear's Day in Japan; 1030 participants (301 women) responded; 155 participants (72 women) had a clinical diagnosis of DED. We defined undiagnosed DED (n = 116; 54 women) as those with DED symptoms, as evaluated by a frequently used questionnaire despite not having a clinical diagnosis. A multivariate adjusted model indicated that younger age (odds ratio (OR), 0.97 for each one-year decrease; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.95-0.99), female sex (OR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.28-3.50), and prolonged visual display terminal usage (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04-1.21) were risk factors for undiagnosed DED. To investigate the efficacy of self-care management for DED, a sub-analysis was conducted. The number of self-care methods used was significantly higher among women than men. For undiagnosed DED, those with less than three self-care methods had a significantly worse Dry Eye-related Quality-of-Life Score compared with those with diagnosed DED. This study revealed risk factors for undiagnosed DED; individuals with those risk factors need to be clinically assessed and should not rely solely on self-care.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the effects of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) eye drops on the ocular surface structure and tear function in mice and established a novel animal model for dry eye research. We found that, following treatment with PM2.5, the tear volume and, the tear film break-up time showed statistical differences at each time point (P < 0.05). The FL score of the PM2.5-treated group was higher than that of others (P < 0.05). The average number of corneal epithelial layer cells in groups A and B was significantly lower than that in group C (P < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the number of corneal epithelial microvilli and corneal desmosomes was drastically reduced in group C. PM2.5 induced apoptosis in the corneal superficial and basal epithelium and led to abnormal differentiation and proliferation of the ocular surface with higher expression levels of Ki67 and a reduced number of goblet cells in the conjunctival fornix in group C. PM2.5 significantly increased the levels of TNF-α, NF-κB p65 (phospho S536), and NF-κB in the cornea. Thus, the topical administration of PM2.5 in mice induces ocular surface changes that are similar to those of dry eye in humans, representing a novel model of dry eye.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the peripheral refraction induced by Fractal Contact Lenses (FCLs) in myopic eyes by means of a two-dimensional Relative Peripheral Refractive Error (RPRE) map. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study involved 26 myopic subjects ranging from -0.50 D to -7.00 D. FCLs prototypes were custom-manufactured and characterized. Corneal topographies were taken in order to assess correlations between corneal asphericity and lens decentration. Two-dimensional RPREs were measured with an open-field autorefractor at 67 points, covering the central 60 × 30 degrees of the visual field. The bidimensional RPRE vector components: M, J0 and J45 of the difference between the values obtained with and without the FCLs in the eye were obtained. Additionally, the FCL-induced peripheral refraction in tangential and sagittal planes was computed along the horizontal meridian. RESULTS Induced by the FCLs, significant differences for all vector components were found in the peripheral retina. FCLs were decentered a mean of 0.7 ± 0.19 mm to the temporal cornea. The two-dimensional RPRE maps manifested the FCLs decentration. In particular, M varied asymmetrically between nasal and temporal retina after fitting the FCLs with a significant increment of the myopic shift beyond 10º (p < 0.05). No correlations were found between the amount of lens decentration and the asphericity of the cornea along temporal and nasal sides. However, significant correlations were found between the corneal asphericity and vector components of the RPRE in naked eyes. FCLs produced an increasing myopic shift in tangential and sagittal power errors along the horizontal meridian. CONCLUSIONS As predicted by ray-tracing simulations, FCLs fitted in myopic eyes produce a myopic shift of the RPRE. The two-dimensional RPRE maps show information about the lens performance that is hidden in the conventional one-dimensional meridional representations.
