Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pain management is essential in the immediate post-surgical period. We sought to describe the ketorolac dose regimen in neonates and infants following cardiac surgery. Secondary outcomes included renal dysfunction, bleeding, and pain management. METHODS We performed a single-centre retrospective cohort study of neonates and infants (aged < 12 months) who received ketorolac following cardiac surgery, from November 2020 through November 2021 (inclusive). Ketorolac was administered at 0.5 mg/kg every 6 hours. Safety was defined by absence of a clinically significant decline in renal function (i.e., increase in serum creatinine [SCr] by ≥ 0.3 mg/dL from baseline within 48 hours and/or urine output ≤ 0.5 mL/kg/hour for 6 hours) and absence of clinically significant bleeding defined as major by International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis paediatric criteria or Severe/Fatal Bleeding Events by Nellis et al. Efficacy measures included pain scores and opioid utilisation. RESULTS Fifty-five patients met eligibility criteria. The median (range) dose and duration of ketorolac administration was 0.5 mg/kg/dose for 48 (6-90) hours. Among all patients, there was not a statistically significant difference observed in median SCr within 48 hours of baseline (p > .9). There were no major or severe bleeding events. The median (range) opioid requirements (morphine intravenous equivalents per kg per day) at 48 hours post-ketorolac initiation was 0.1 (0-0.8) mg/kg/day. CONCLUSIONS If validated prospectively, these findings suggest that a ketorolac regimen 0.5 mg/kg/dose every 6 hours in neonates and infants post-cardiac surgery may be safe with regard to renal function and bleeding risk, and effective regarding opioid-sparing capacity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain management is essential for postoperative surgery. Given the association of opioids with adverse outcomes, interest in the use of nonopioid analgesics, such as ketorolac, has increased. Published data on use in neonates are limited. OBJECTIVES To describe ketorolac dosing and safety and efficacy outcomes in the first 48 hours postcardiac surgery in neonates. DESIGN We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study of neonates (ages < 28 d) who received ketorolac following cardiac surgery from November 2020 to July 2023 (inclusive). The primary safety outcome was a clinically significant decline in renal function, as defined by the composite of an increase in serum creatinine by greater than or equal to 0.3 mg/dL from baseline within 96 hours of ketorolac initiation and urine output less than or equal to 0.5 mL/kg/hr for 6 hours. The secondary safety outcome was clinically significant bleeding, defined as the composite of major bleeding by the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis pediatric criteria and severe/fatal bleeding by the criteria of Nellis et al (2019). Efficacy was measured by opioid utilization based on a standardized pain score-driven analgesia protocol. INTERVENTIONS Ketorolac was administered at 0.5 mg/kg every 6 hours as per an institutional clinical management algorithm. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Thirty-nine patients met the eligibility criteria. The median ketorolac dose was 0.5 mg/kg/dose, and median (interquartile range [IQR]) duration of therapy was 48 hours (6-48 hr). No patients experienced a significant decline in renal function, and there were no clinically significant bleeding events. The median (IQR) IV morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs)/kg/d of opioid administration was 0.2 MME/kg/d (0.1-0.25 MME/kg/d) at the time of ketorolac initiation and 0.1 MME/kg/d (0.1-0.2 MME/kg/d) at 48 hours post-ketorolac initiation. CONCLUSIONS If validated prospectively, these findings suggest that a ketorolac regimen of 0.5 mg/kg/dose every 6 hours in neonates postcardiac surgery may be safe with regard to renal function and bleeding risk. Additional randomized studies would be needed to determine efficacy with regard to opioid-sparing capacity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterise the current approach to sedation, analgesia, iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome and delirium in paediatric cardiac ICUs. DESIGN A convenience sample survey of practitioners at institutions participating in the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium conducted from September to December 2020. SETTING Paediatric cardiac ICUs. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Survey responses were received from 33 of 42 institutions contacted. Screening for pain and agitation occurs commonly and frequently. A minority of responding centres (39%) have a written analgesia management protocol/guideline. A minority (42%) of centres have a written protocol for sedation. Screening for withdrawal occurs commonly, although triggers for withdrawal screening vary. Only 42% of respondents have written protocols for withdrawal management. Screening for delirium occurs "always" in 46% of responding centres, "sometimes" in 36% of centres and "never" 18%. Nine participating centres (27%) have written protocols for delirium management. CONCLUSIONS Our survey identified that most responding paediatric cardiac ICUs lack a standardised approach to the management of analgesia, sedation, iatrogenic withdrawal, and delirium. Screening for pain and agitation occurs regularly, while screening for withdrawal occurs fairly frequently, and screening for delirium is notably less consistent. Only a minority of centres use written protocols or guidelines for the management of these problems. We believe that this represents an opportunity to significantly improve patient care within the paediatric cardiac ICU.

Abstract
Introduction Adequate sedation and analgesia are two crucial factors affecting recovery of intensive care patients. Improper use of sedation and analgesia in intensive care patients may adversely lead to brain oxygen desaturation. This study aims to determine cerebral oxygenation as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and inotropic interventions received among mechanically ventilated children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Methods This study is a nested case - control study in the PICU of Indonesian tertiary hospital. Children aged 1 month to 17 years on mechanical ventilation and were given sedation and analgesia were included in the study. Subjects were divided into two groups according to the protocol of the main study (Clinical Trial ID NCT04788589). Cerebral oxygenation was measured by NIRS at five time points (before sedation, 5-min, 1, 6, and 12 h after sedation). Results Thirty-nine of the 69 subjects were categorized into the protocol group and the rest were in the control group. A decrease of >20% NIRS values was found among subjects in the protocol group at 5-min (6.7%), 1-h (11.1%), 6-h (26.3%), and 12-h (23.8%) time-point. The mean NIRS value was lower and the inotropic intervention was more common in the control group (without protocol), although not statistically significant. Conclusion This study found that mechanically ventilated children who received sedation and analgesia based on the protocol had a greater decrease of >20% NIRS values compared to the other group. The use of sedation and analgesia protocols must be applied in selected patients after careful consideration.

Abstract
In the last decades, the advancement of knowledge in analgesia and sedation for critically ill pediatric patients has been conspicuous and relevant. Many recommendations have changed to ensure patients' comfort during their intensive care unit (ICU) stay and prevent and treat sedation-related complications, as well as improve functional recovery and clinical outcomes. The key aspects of the analgosedation management in pediatrics have been recently reviewed in two consensus-based documents. However, there remains a lot to be researched and understood. With this narrative review and authors' point of view, we aimed to summarize the new insights presented in these two documents to facilitate their interpretation and application in clinical practice, as well as to outline research priorities in the field. What is New: •The new insights on the analgosedation treatment for critically ill pediatric patients delineated in the recent guidelines are summarized to identify strategies for changes in clinical practice. •Research gaps and potential for quality improvement projects are also highlighted.

Abstract
AbstractProcedural sedation in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is vital for the practitioner to fully understand the complexity of lesions, their hemodynamics, and the impact of medications commonly used for procedural sedation on the stability of systemic vascular resistance and pulmonary flow. According to the literature, we explain the interaction of the systemic vascular resistance and pulmonary flow in such lesions and divide them into five categories outlined in this article: (1) CHDs with left-to-right shunt with normal pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance, (2) CHD with left-to-right shunt and moderate to severe elevation of pulmonary arterial pressure with near-normal pulmonary vascular resistance, (3) CHD with pulmonary flow dependent on systemic vascular resistance, (4) patients with congenital coronary stenosis and coronary anomalies, and 5) aortic obstructive lesions.

Cardiac arrest during endotracheal intubation of children with systolic dysfunction. Cardiol Young 2022; 33:532-538. Abstract
This multicenter study aimed to describe peri-intubation cardiac arrest in paediatric cardiac patients with significant (moderate or severe) systolic dysfunction of the systemic ventricle. Intubation data were collected from 4 paediatric cardiac ICUs in the United States (January 2015 - December 2017). Clinician practices during intubation of patients with significant dysfunction were compared to practices during intubation of patients without significant systolic dysfunction. There were 67 intubations in patients with significant systolic dysfunction. Peri-intubation cardiac arrest rate in this population was 14.9% (10/67); peri-intubation mortality was 3%. Majority (6/10; 60%) of the cardiac arrests were classified as pulseless electrical activity. Patients with cardiac arrest upon intubation had a higher serum lactate and lower serum pH than patients without peri-intubation cardiac arrest in the significant systolic dysfunction group.In comparing cardiac ICU patients with significant systolic dysfunction (n = 67) to patients from the same time period with normal ventricular function or mild dysfunction (n = 183), clinicians were less likely to use midazolam (11.9% versus 25.1%; p = 0.03) and more likely to use etomidate (16.4% versus 4.4%; p = 0.002) for intubation. Use of other sedative agents, video laryngoscopy, atropine, inotrope initiation, and consultation of an anaesthesiologist for intubation were not statistically different between the groups.This is the first study to describe the rate of and risk factors for peri-intubation cardiac arrest in paediatric cardiac ICU patients with systolic dysfunction. There was a higher peri-intubation cardiac arrest rate compared to published rates in critically ill children with heart disease and compared to children with significant systolic dysfunction undergoing elective general anaesthesia.

Abstract
We aim to develop evidence-based recommendations for intensivists caring for children admitted to intensive care units and requiring analgesia and sedation. A panel of national paediatric intensivists expert in the field of analgesia and sedation and other specialists (a paediatrician, a neuropsychiatrist, a psychologist, a neurologist, a pharmacologist, an anaesthesiologist, two critical care nurses, a methodologist) started in 2018, a 2-year process. Three meetings and one electronic-based discussion were dedicated to the development of the recommendations (presentation of the project, selection of research questions, overview of text related to the research questions, discussion of recommendations). A telematic anonymous consultation was adopted to reach the final agreement on recommendations. A formal conflict-of-interest declaration was obtained from all the authors. Eight areas of direct interest and one additional topic were considered to identify the best available evidence and to develop the recommendations using the Evidence-to-Decision framework according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. For each recommendation, the level of evidence, the strength of the recommendation, the benefits, the harms and the risks, the benefit/harm balance, the intentional vagueness, the values judgement, the exclusions, the difference of the opinions, the knowledge gaps, and the research opportunities were reported. The panel produced 17 recommendations. Nine were evaluated as strong, 3 as moderate, and 5 as weak. Conclusion: a panel of national experts achieved consensus regarding recommendations for the best care in terms of analgesia and sedation in critically ill children.

Methods: A multicenter prospective study in children admitted to pediatric intensive care, aged between 1 month and 18 years. Twenty-eight observers from 14 PICUs (pediatric intensive care units) participated. Every observation was assessed by 4 observers: 2 nurses and 2 pediatric intensivists. We analyzed RASS inter-rater reliability, construct validity by comparing RASS to the COMFORT behavior (COMFORT-B) scale and the numeric rating scale (NRS), and by its ability to distinguish between levels of sedation, and responsiveness to changes in sedative dose levels. Results: 139 episodes in 55 patients were analyzed, with a median age 3.6 years (interquartile range 0.7-7.8). Inter-rater reliability was excellent, weighted kappa (κw) 0.946 (95% CI, 0.93-0.96; p < 0.001). RASS correlation with COMFORT-B scale, rho = 0.935 (p < 0.001) and NRS, rho = 0.958 (p < 0.001) was excellent. The RASS scores were significantly different (p < 0.001) for the 3 sedation categories (over-sedation, optimum and under-sedation) of the COMFORT-B scale, with a good agreement between both scales, κw 0.827 (95% CI, 0.789-0.865; p < 0.001), κ 0.762 (95% CI, 0.713-0.811, p < 0.001). A significant change in RASS scores (p < 0.001) was recorded with the variance of sedative doses. Conclusions: The RASS showed good measurement properties in PICU, in terms of inter-rater reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness. These properties, including its ability to categorize the patients into deep sedation, moderate-light sedation, and agitation, makes the RASS a useful instrument for monitoring sedation in PICU.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To conduct a scoping review of sedation clinical trials in the paediatric intensive care setting and summarise key methodological elements. DESIGN Scoping review. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and grey references including ClinicalTrials.gov from database inception to 3 August 2021. STUDY SELECTION All human trials in the English language related to sedation in paediatric critically ill patients were included. After title and abstract screening, full-text review was performed. 29 trials were eligible for final analysis. DATA EXTRACTION A coding manual was developed and pretested. Trial characteristics were double extracted. RESULTS The majority of trials were single centre (22/29, 75.9%), parallel group superiority (17/29, 58.6%), double-blinded (18/29, 62.1%) and conducted in an academic setting (29/29, 100.0%). Trial enrolment (≥90% planned sample size) was achieved in 65.5% of trials (19/29), and retention (≥90% enrolled subjects) in 72.4% of trials (21/29). Protocol violations were reported in nine trials (31.0%). The most commonly studied cohorts were mechanically ventilated patients (28/29, 96.6%) and postsurgical patients (11/29, 37.9%) with inclusion criteria for age ranging from 0±0.5 to 15.0±7.3 years (median±IQR). The median age of enrolled patients was 1.7 years (IQR=4.4 years). Patients excluded from trials were those with neurological impairment (21/29, 72.4%), complex disease (20/29, 69.0%) or receipt of neuromuscular blockade (10/29, 34.5%). Trials evaluated drugs/protocols for sedation management (20/29, 69.0%), weaning (3/29, 10.3%), daily interruption (3/29, 10.3%) or protocolisation (3/29, 10.3%). Primary outcome measures were heterogeneous, as were assessment instruments and follow-up durations. CONCLUSIONS There is substantial heterogeneity in methodological approach in clinical trials evaluating sedation in critically ill paediatric patients. These results provide a basis for the design of future clinical trials to improve the quality of trial data and aid in the development of sedation-related clinical guidelines.

Abstract
Comfort of the critically unwell pediatric patient is paramount to ensuring good outcomes. Analgesia-based, multimodal sedative approaches are the foundation for comfort, whereby pain is addressed first and then sedation titrated to a predefined target based on the goals of care. Given the heterogeneity of patients within the pediatric critical care population, the approach must be individualized based on the age and developmental stage of the child, physiologic status, and degree of invasive treatment required. In both the adult and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), sedation titration is practiced as standard of care to meet therapeutic goals with a focus on facilitating early rehabilitation and extubation while avoiding under- and over-sedation. Sedation protocols have been developed as methods to reduce variability and optimize goal-directed therapy. Components of a sedation protocol include routine analgesia and sedation scoring with validated tools at specified intervals and a predefined algorithm that allows the titration of analgesia and sedation based on those assessments. Sedation protocols are designed to improve communication and documentation of sedation goals while also empowering the bedside team to respond rapidly to changes in a patient's clinical status. Previously it was thought that sedation protocols would consistently reduce duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) and length of stay (LOS) for patients in the PICU, however, this has not been the case. Nonetheless, introduction of sedation protocols has provided several benefits, including: (I) reduction in benzodiazepine usage; (II) improvements in interprofessional communication surrounding sedation goals and management of sedation goals; and (III) reductions in iatrogenic withdrawal symptoms. Successful implementation of sedation protocols requires passionate clinical champions and a robust implementation, education, and sustainability plan. Emerging evidence suggests that sedation protocols as part of a bundle of quality improvement initiatives will form the basis of future studies to improve short- and long-term outcomes after PICU discharge. In this review, we aim to define sedation protocols in the context of pediatric critical care and highlight important considerations for clinical practice and research.

Abstract
Adequate pain control is a critical component of the perioperative approach to children undergoing repair of congenital heart disease (CHD). The impact of specific anatomic and physiologic disturbances on the management of analgesia has been largely unexplored at the present time. Studies in other pediatric populations have found an association between chronic hypoxemia and an increased sensitivity to the effects of opioid medications. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine perioperative opioid administration and opioid-associated adverse effects in children undergoing surgical repair of CHD, with a comparison between patients with and without chronic preoperative cyanosis. Patients between the ages of 2 and 5 years whose tracheas were extubated in the operating room were included and were classified in the cyanotic group if they presented for the Fontan completion. The primary outcomes of interest were intraoperative and postoperative opioid administration. Secondary outcomes included pain scores and opioid-related side effects. The study cohort included 156 patients. Seventy-one underwent the Fontan procedure, twelve of which were fenestrated. Fontan patients received fewer opioids intraoperatively (11.33 µg/kg fentanyl equivalents versus 12.56 µg/kg, p = 0.03). However, there were no differences with regards to opioid consumption postoperatively and no correlation between preoperative oxygen saturation and total opioid administration. There were no differences between groups with regards to the respiratory rate nadir, postoperative pain scores, or the incidence of opioid-related side effects. In contrast to other populations with chronic hypoxemia exposure, children with cyanotic CHD did not appear to have increased sensitivity to the effects of opioid medications.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this review is to present the available literature on the use of nonopioid analgesics such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in postcardiac surgery pediatric patients, mainly to focus on patients <1 year of age, and to provide the foundation for future research. Materials and Methods: Published studies that address the use on nonopioid medications for postoperative sedation and analgesia in infants and children undergoing cardiac surgery were identified from online sources. Studies were reviewed by two authors independently to assess the quality of the data as well as the evidence. Due to limited availability of such studies, the review was then expanded to include use in noncardiac procedures as well as to expanded age groups. All studies that met the primary objective were included. Results/Data Synthesis: Majority of the studies in the population of interest were related to use of ketorolac. Five studies specifically addressed ketorolac use in cardiac patients. In addition, studies were reviewed for nonopioid analgesia in noncardiac patients and included as a part of the available evidence as in the case of acetaminophen use. Newer agents as well as agents with very limited information were also acknowledged. Conclusion: Nonopioid medications appear to show promise for analgesia in infants undergoing cardiac surgery, with ketorolac being the most potent agent as a potential substitute for opioids. These agents demonstrate a reasonable safety profile even in the very young. There continue to be significant gaps in knowledge before their adoption becomes routine. However, gives the awareness regarding short-term and long-term impact of opioid use in this vulnerable population, and studies of such agents are an urgent need.

Abstract
Inadequate pain and/or stress management in preterm- and term-born infants has been associated with increased morbidity and even mortality. However, exposure to analgosedatives during early infancy may also be one of the risk factors for subsequent neurodevelopmental impairment, at least in animal studies. Because infants admitted to neonatal or pediatric intensive care units may receive high amounts of these drugs for prolonged periods of time and the majority of these infants nowadays survive to discharge, this is of major concern. A balanced approach that incorporates the assessment and quantification of both wanted effects as well as unwanted side effects is therefore needed. In this article, the optimal dose determination of commonly used analgosedative drugs as well as their potential long-term effects on the developing human brain and neuropsychological functioning are reviewed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Parents' and nurses' expectations about pain control and comfort in children after heart surgery were explored to contribute to evidence-based family-centered interventions. DESIGN AND METHODS 20 nurses and 23 parents from a tertiary pediatric center in the Pacific Northwest, were interviewed about their expectations of children's pain control and comfort experience in the hospital after heart surgery. In this descriptive study, data were collected from semi-structured recall interviews and analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Most parents expected their child be medicated at a level of not feeling any pain. Many expected their child to remain in a heavily sedated state after the surgery. A few parents did not know what to expect. In contrast, nurses expected children to have controlled pain with intermittent discomfort, yet, tolerating recovery activities. CONCLUSIONS Although both parents and nurses expect to partner in the comfort care of the child, there is variation on the expectations around the nurse-parent relationship and the operational definition of pain management and comfort. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Awareness of parents' expectations about pediatric post-operative comfort present an opportunity for the development of interventions aimed to enhance alignment of nurse and family strategies for children after heart surgery. Pre-operative preparation for families specific to post-operative recovery and pain management of children hospitalized for heart surgery is needed.

Abstract
Pain prevention in the pediatric population is mandatory and an integrative aspect of medical practice. Optimal pain management is the right of all patients and the responsibility of all health professionals. The key to adequate pain management is assessing its presence and severity, identifying those who require intervention, and appreciating treatment efficacy. The population of pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery is unique in both clinical severity and hemodynamic response to painful stimuli, thus making pain management even more challenging. In this review, we will describe the different pain assessment tools as well as intra- and postoperative regimens of pain management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adequate postoperative analgesia in pediatric patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) matters, since untreated pain is associated with negative outcomes. Compared to routine postoperative patients, children undergoing hypothermia (HT) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), or recovering after cardiac surgery likely display non-maturational differences in pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD). These differences warrant additional dosing recommendations to optimize pain treatment. Areas covered: Specific populations within the ICU will be discussed with respect to expected variations in PK and PD for various analgesics. We hereby move beyond maturational changes and focus on why PK/PD may be different in children undergoing HT, ECMO or cardiac surgery. We provide a stepwise manner to develop PK-based dosing regimens using population PK approaches in these populations. Expert opinion: A one-dose to size-fits-all for analgesia is suboptimal, but for several commonly used analgesics the impact of HT, ECMO or cardiac surgery on average PK parameters in children is not yet sufficiently known. Parameters considering both maturational and non-maturational covariates are important to develop population PK-based dosing advices as part of a strategy to optimize pain treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Children and adolescents often require sedation and analgesia in emergency situations. With the emergence of new therapeutic options, the obsolescence of others, and recent discoveries regarding already known drugs, it became necessary to review the literature in this area. DATA SOURCES Non-systematic review in the PubMed database of studies published up to December 2016, including original articles, review articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. References from textbooks, publications from regulatory agencies, and articles cited in reviews and meta-analyses through active search were also included. DATA SYNTHESIS Based on current literature, the concepts of sedation and analgesia, the necessary care with the patient before, during, and after sedoanalgesia, and indications related to the appropriate choice of drugs according to the procedure to be performed and their safety profiles are presented. CONCLUSIONS The use of sedoanalgesia protocols in procedures in the pediatric emergency room should guide the professional in the choice of medication, the appropriate material, and in the evaluation of discharge criteria, thus assuring quality in care.

Abstract
Sedation is a mainstay of therapy for critically ill children. Although necessary in the care of the critically ill child, sedative drugs are associated with adverse effects, such as disruption of circadian rhythm, altered sleep, delirium, potential neurotoxicity, and immunosuppression. Optimal approaches to the sedation of the critically ill child should include identification of sedation targets and sedation interruptions, allowing for a more individualized approach to sedation. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between critical illness and sedation pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, the impact of sedation on immune function, and the genetic implications on drug disposition and response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The mainstay of pain treatment after paediatric cardiac surgery is the use of opioids. Current guidelines for its optimal use are based on small, non-randomised clinical trials, and data on the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of opioids are lacking. This study aims at providing an overview of international hospital practices on the treatment of pain and sedation after paediatric cardiac surgery. DESIGN A multicentre survey study assessed the management of pain and sedation in children aged 0-18 years after cardiac surgery. SETTING Pediatric intensive care units (PICU)of 19 tertiary children's hospitals worldwide were invited to participate. The focus of the survey was on type and dose of analgesic and sedative drugs and the tools used for their pharmacodynamic assessment. RESULTS Fifteen hospitals (response rate 79%) filled out the survey. Morphine was the primary analgesic in most hospitals, and its doses for continuous infusion ranged from 10 to 60 mcg kg-1 h-1 in children aged 0-36 months. Benzodiazepines were the first choice for sedation, with midazolam used in all study hospitals. Eight hospitals (53%) reported routine use of sedatives with pain treatment. Overall, type and dosing of analgesic and sedative drugs differed substantially between hospitals. All participating hospitals used validated pain and sedation assessment tools. CONCLUSION There was a large variation in the type and dosing of drugs employed in the treatment of pain and sedation after paediatric cardiac surgery. As a consequence, there is a need to rationalise pain and sedation management for this vulnerable patient group.
