Acute Inguinal Bacterial Lymphadenitis in Infants Younger Than 1 Year of Age

We examined 17 infants under age 1 year with inguinal bacterial lymphadenitis; 8 had a prior episode of omphalitis or an umbilical procedure, and one-third were afebrile and initially received the misdiagnosis of incarcerated hernia. Our findings suggested a possible association between inguinal bacterial lymphadenitis in infants and umbilical problems.

Inguinal ovarian hernia on point of care ultrasound: case reports and review of the literature

An inguinal mass may be an incidental finding on physical examination. There are few descriptions of pediatric hernia with ovarian content in the pediatric emergency literature, and no recommendations for routine point of care ultrasound (POCUS) evaluation of inguinal hernia. We present three cases of ovarian content within an inguinal hernia sac found on POCUS by a pediatric emergency physician, and discuss ultrasound technique and implications of these findings. Inguinal masses should routinely be evaluated with POCUS in order to prevent forceful reduction efforts that may damage the ovary, and to allow for effective surgical triage and early involvement of surgical subspecialists.

CME Sonography 100: Emergency Ultrasound of the Soft Tissues and the Musculoskeletal System Abstract. The term "emergency sonography" refers to a focused sonography in emergency situations, also called emergency "Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)". The attending physician applies it specifically and directly to the patient. As an indispensable part of the physical examination, emergency ultrasound helps to answer simple clinical questions. The corresponding answers provide essential elements for diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making. Furthermore, the emergency ultrasound increases the safety and efficiency of interventions on the musculoskeletal system and soft tissues. In this article we will discuss common clinical emergency situations in a focused way, but we will not address the regional anesthesiologic and analgesia-related applications that are also important in this context.
