Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional water baths for ultrasound exams place a hand into a pan of water and submerge an ultrasound probe into the water. While this improves ultrasound transmission and moves structures into the focal zone to make higher resolution images, this method does have limitations. Patients must be manipulated directly under the probe, which can be limited by pain or normal movement restrictions. The probe must also be held very still in water to minimize motion artifact. The lateral approach water bath method addresses such limitations by imaging through the side of a thin-walled plastic container without submerging the probe. This reduces much need for patient manipulation by imaging through the side of a column-shaped bath, which has 360 degrees of imaging freedom. It also stabilizes the probe directly against the flat, firm container to reduce image degrading motion artifact. We hypothesized that because of these improvements the lateral approach water bath might create higher quality images than traditional water baths. METHODS We compared twenty images from each method, which were obtained with the same model and ultrasound operator at the same time. Two ultrasound fellowship trained blinded reviewers rated the images for quality and adequacy for clinical decision making on a scale from 1 to 5. RESULTS Image quality was better for the lateral water bath, with an average rating of 4.2 compared to the traditional bath's 2.6 (p < 0.001). Adequacy to aid clinical decision making was better for the lateral approach bath with an average rating of 4.0 compared to the traditional bath's 2.6 (p < 0.001). The lateral bath also had a smaller range for image quality and thus greater consistency. CONCLUSIONS The lateral approach water bath is a method of hand imaging that produces higher quality, more consistent, and more clinically useful images than traditional water bath imaging.

Abstract
Point-of-care ultrasound can improve efficacy and safety of pediatric procedures performed in the emergency department. This article reviews ultrasound guidance for the following pediatric emergency medicine procedures: soft tissue (abscess incision and drainage, foreign body identification and removal, and peritonsillar abscess drainage), musculoskeletal and neurologic (hip arthrocentesis, peripheral nerve blocks, and lumbar puncture), vascular access (peripheral intravenous access and central line placement), and critical care (endotracheal tube placement, pericardiocentesis, thoracentesis, and paracentesis). By incorporating ultrasound, emergency physicians caring for pediatric patients have the potential to enhance their procedural scope, confidence, safety, and success.

It includes a brief overview of the clinical characteristics and focuses on the type of pain for each condition as well as the mechanisms that cause it.

Abstract
The utility of point-of-care ultrasound is well supported by the medical literature. Consequently, pediatric emergency medicine providers have embraced this technology in everyday practice. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a policy statement endorsing the use of point-of-care ultrasound by pediatric emergency medicine providers. To date, there is no standard guideline for the practice of point-of-care ultrasound for this specialty. This document serves as an initial step in the detailed "how to" and description of individual point-of-care ultrasound examinations. Pediatric emergency medicine providers should refer to this paper as reference for published research, objectives for learners, and standardized reporting guidelines.

Abstract
Otolaryngologists frequently encounter children with foreign bodies retained inside the lumen of their upper aerodigestive tract. However, total capture in the soft tissues happens rarely, and could be clinically, as well as radiographically, silent. Ultrasonography is a safe and effective imaging modality, aiding both diagnosis and surgical treatment. We report on a 14-month girl with chronic, fluctuating cheek edema and erythema, induced by an impalpable, radiolucent bundle of organic fibers embedded intramuscularly. Foreign body identification and atraumatic removal were facilitated by real-time ultrasound scanning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Open wounds with the potential for retained foreign bodies are frequently seen in the emergency department (ED). Common foreign bodies, such as wood or glass, are often missed on physical examination and conventional radiography. The increased use of ultrasonography (US) in the ED presents an opportunity to better identify retained soft tissue foreign bodies, and understanding of its test characteristics is desirable. The authors set out to determine the test characteristics of US for detection of soft tissue foreign bodies by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing literature. METHODS This was a thorough, systematic review of OVID Medline, SCOPUS, and Cochrane databases and a limited review of Directory of Open Access Journals, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov to identify clinical studies examining the diagnostic accuracy of US in the identification of retained soft tissue foreign bodies. Studies were selected for full-text review by two independent reviewers to determine if they met inclusion criteria. Results were pooled for test characteristics using STATA and assessed for risk of bias and applicability using the QUADAS-2 tool. RESULTS This systematic search strategy identified 5,059 unique articles, and 17 articles met inclusion criteria. Pooled sensitivity and specificity were, respectively, 72% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 57% to 83%) and 92% (95% CI = 88% to 95%). Overall quality of the studies was low and interstudy heterogeneity was high (I(2) = 90%, 95% CI = 80% to 100%). CONCLUSIONS Ultrasonography is highly specific and moderately sensitive in the identification of retained soft tissue foreign bodies; however, studies to date have a high degree of heterogeneity and a high risk of bias.

Abstract
Myiasis, or the infiltration of the botfly larvae, is a relatively frequent problem encountered by travelers to parts of Latin America. This is a novel case report that documents a Dermatobia hominis infestation of the left facial region with secondary periorbital cellulitis diagnosed by point-of-care ultrasonography.

Abstract
Although most ingested foreign bodies in children pass spontaneously, certain foreign bodies can be harmful and they require special attention and emergent medical intervention to prevent significant morbidity and mortality. This article presents an overview of the epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and complications of foreign body ingestions in children. Particular attention is paid to coins, sharp objects, long objects, food bolus, caustic liquids, batteries, and magnets.
