Imaging of Rotator Cuff Calcific Tendinopathy Using 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG PET/CT

ABSTRACT

Calcific tendinopathy is a common condition of the shoulder caused by the inflammation and deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals in the rotator cuff tendons. PET tracers capturing the molecular changes associated with the crystal deposition of calcific tendinopathy remain underinvestigated. In this report, we present calcified tendinopathy of the infraspinatus tendon demonstrating both 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG focal uptake in a 61-year-old woman.

Simultaneous Uptake of 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG by Bladder and Prostate Calculi

ABSTRACT

Calcification and formation of calculi in the genitourinary system such as the bladder, kidney, and prostate are common processes of aging. Despite being in different parts of the body, these calculi can share risk factors; for instance, bladder and prostate calculi are seen in older men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. There have been increasing reports of detection of calculi using PET tracers such as 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG, suggesting their role for detection of extraosseous calcification. In this report, we present simultaneous detection of bladder and prostate calculi with both 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG avidity in a 74-year-old man with multiple myeloma.

Demonstration of 99mTc-MDP Uptake in a Mobile Urinary Bladder Calculus on SPECT/CT

We report a large mobile bladder calculus with intense Tc-MDP uptake demonstrated on both whole-body bone scintigraphy and SPECT/CT images in a patient with complicated chronic history of urolithiasis and urinary tract infection. Bone tracer uptake in bladder calculus is a rare phenomenon and might be related to the composition and matrix of calculus, direct exposure to excreted radiotracer, and bacterial colonization on the surface of calculus.

The clinical significance of incidental soft tissue uptake on whole body 18F-sodium fluoride bone PET-CT

¹⁸F-sodium fluoride (NaF) is a PET bone imaging agent and is commonly used in imaging patients with cancer; however, similar to technetium-99m medronic acid (^99mTc-MDP), it can be useful in the evaluation of benign bone and joint conditions. NaF is an excellent bone-seeking agent with high bone uptake due to rapid single-pass extraction. It has negligible plasma protein binding, rapid blood, renal clearance, high bone uptake and almost all NaF delivered is retained by bone after a single pass of blood; however, uptake of NaF can be observed in non-osseous structures such as the arterial vasculature, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, and viscera. In this article, we present a spectrum of clinical cases with non-osseous NaF uptake in patients referred for cancer staging.

Serendipitous Ureteral Stone Revealed on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scintigraphy

A 62-year-old man with esophageal cancer was referred for a Tc-MDP bone scintigraphy for staging. No metastatic lesion in the bone was identified. However, the images showed focally increased activity in the left pelvis, which were confirmed as ureteral stone on the SPECT/CT images.

Long-lasting Intense Bone Tracer Activity at the Sites of Collagen Injection

Collagen injection has been used as dermal filler in plastic and cosmetic surgery. A technetium Tc methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy was performed in a 47-year-old woman as part of the breast cancer evaluation. The images showed intense methylene diphosphonate activity on both sides of the frontal head, where she received collagen injection 1 year prior. The activity was visualized again in all 3 follow-up bone scans over the subsequent 3 years.
