The eyelid of Asians has its own unique characteristics. If the surgeon does not acknowledge this, aesthetically pleasing results will seldom be achieved. Here the authors review and summarize important up-to-date anatomical and relevant clinical studies of the Asian upper eyelid, aiming to help surgeons thoroughly understand its unique features, including Asian eyelid morphology, anatomical details, and the mechanisms of upper eyelid crease formation. Hopefully, an in-depth understanding of the Asian eyelid will aid surgeons to accomplish their work and lead to novel new techniques in this field.

Upper lid blepharoplasty is the most common plastic surgery procedure in Asia and has consistently maintained its position as cultural acceptance and techniques have evolved. Asian upper lid blepharoplasty is a complex procedure that requires comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and precise surgical technique. The creation of the supratarsal crease has gone through many evolutions in technique but the principles and goals remain the same: a functional, natural-appearing eyelid crease that brings out the beauty of the Asian eye. Recent advances have improved functional and aesthetic outcomes of Asian upper lid blepharoplasty.

Global contributions to Annals of Plastic Surgery: authorship in an English language journal by international colleagues

We reviewed the contributor demographics of recent volumes of Annals of Plastic Surgery to quantify the contributions of authors from countries where the primary language is not English. For 2 volumes of Annals (63 and 65), such authors contributed 57% of the total articles published. Within the new section format of volume 66, authors from non-English language countries accounted for 60% of all original articles with substantial and often dominant representation in all sections. This survey shows that Annals publishes articles from an international population of contributors with effective inclusion of authors from countries with primary languages other than English.
