Bibliometric Analysis of Journals in the Field of Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery for Pituitary Adenomas

Growth in chikungunya virus-related research in ASEAN and South Asian countries from 1967 to 2022 following disease emergence: a bibliometric and graphical analysis

BACKGROUND

ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is composed of ten Southeast Asian countries bound by socio-cultural ties that promote regional peace and stability. South Asia, located in the southern subregion of Asia, includes nine countries sharing similarities in geographical and ethno-cultural factors. Chikungunya is one of the most significant problems in Southeast and South Asian countries. Much of the current chikungunya epidemic in Southeast Asia is caused by the emergence of a virus strain that originated in Africa and spread to Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, in South Asia, three confirmed lineages are in circulation. Given the positive correlation between research activity and the improvement of the clinical framework of biomedical research, this article aimed to examine the growth of chikungunya virus-related research in ASEAN and South Asian countries.

METHODS

The Scopus database was used for this bibliometric analysis. The retrieved publications were subjected to a number of analyses, including those for the most prolific countries, journals, authors, institutions, and articles. Co-occurrence mapping of terms and keywords was used to determine the current state, emerging topics, and future prospects of chikungunya virus-related research. Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to analyze the data and visualize the collaboration network mapping.

RESULTS

The Scopus search engine identified 1280 chikungunya-related documents published by ASEAN and South Asian countries between 1967 and 2022. According to our findings, India was the most productive country in South Asia, and Thailand was the most productive country in Southeast Asia. In the early stages of the study, researchers investigated the vectors and outbreaks of the chikungunya virus. In recent years, the development of antivirus agents has emerged as a prominent topic.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study is the first to present the growth of chikungunya virus-related research in ASEAN and South Asian countries from 1967 to 2022. In this study, the evaluation of the comprehensive profile of research on chikungunya can serve as a guide for future studies. In addition, a bibliometric analysis may serve as a resource for healthcare policymakers.

Emerging trends and research foci of oncolytic virotherapy for central nervous system tumors: A bibliometric study

Background

Central nervous system tumor (CNST) is one of the most complicated and lethal forms of human tumors with very limited treatment options. In recent years, growing evidence indicates that oncolytic virotherapy (OVT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for CNSTs. And a considerable amount of literature on OVT-CNSTs has been published. However, there are still no studies summarizing the global research trends and hotspots of this field through a bibliometric approach. To fulfill this knowledge gap, bibliometric analysis was conducted based on all publications relating to OVT-CNSTs since 2000s.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for all relevant studies published between 2000 and 2022. Four different tools (online analysis platform, R-bibliometrix, CiteSpace and VOSviewer) were used to perform bibliometric analysis and network visualization, including annual publication output, active journals, contribution of countries, institutions, and authors, references, as well as keywords.

Results

A total of 473 articles and reviews were included. The annual number of publications on OVT-CNSTs showed a significant increasing trend. Molecular Therapy and Cancer Research were the most active and co-cited journals, respectively. In terms of contributions, there is no doubt that the United States occupied a leading position with the most publications (n=307, 64.9%) and the highest H-index (57). The institution and author that contributed the largest number of publications were Ohio State University and Chiocca EA, respectively. As can be seen from citation analysis, the current studies mainly focused on preclinical and phase I/II clinical results of various oncolytic virus for CNSTs treatment. Keywords co-occurrence and burst analysis revealed that the following research topics including immunotherapy, T-cells, tumor microenvironment, vaccine, blood-brain-barrier, checkpoint inhibitors, macrophage, stem cell, and recurrent glioblastoma have been research frontiers of this field and also have great potential to continue to be research hotspots in the future.

Conclusion

There has been increasing attention on oncolytic viruses for use as CNSTs therapeutics. Oncolytic immunotherapy is a topic of great concern in this field. This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive analysis of the knowledge base, research hotspots, development perspective in the field of OVT-CNSTs, which could become an essential reference for scholars in this area.

Global Research on Maxillofacial Fracture Over the Last 40 Years: A Bibliometric Study

ABSTRACT

Maxillofacial injuries are widely investigated worldwide as it consists a significant portion of trauma patients. Many researchers from various regions have reported the clinical and statistical analyses of maxillofacial fractures (MFFs) as the statistical data of MMFs are of great importance for both effective control and prevention of these cases. The number of studies concerning the diagnosis and treatment modalities of MFFs has significantly increased over the years. The bibliometric method was used to analyze publication outputs, countries, journals, most citations, and trends. In this study, the bibliometric analysis method was used in the publications related to MFFs published between 1980 and 2019, which were Science Citation Index Expanded indexed in the Web of Science database. Bibliometric analysis is applied to evaluate existing data in an evidence-based manner. The highest number of scientific articles on MFFs came from the USA, which was also the most cited country among others. When the distribution of the words in abstracts and titles by years was examined, it was seen that there was a significant change in the words "navigation," "computer," and "technology" between 2009 and 2012. The authors predict that our study would provide a novel perspective to the studies about MFFs and contribute to the researchers about the limits of the topic, and being aware of the active journals that publish the papers on this issue would facilitate the work of the researchers.

Challenges, Learning Curve, and Safety of Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery of Sellar-Suprasellar Lesions in a Community Hospital

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) for the management of sellar, suprasellar, and anterior skull base lesions is gaining popularity. Our aim was to analyze and present the clinical outcomes of EES for the management of these lesions in a community hospital setting.

METHODS

We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 56 patients with sellar, suprasellar, and anterior skull base lesions who underwent EES between 2010 and 2018.

RESULTS

There was male predominance (53.6%) with a mean age of 54.9 ± 13.7 years. Lesions were 45 pituitary adenomas, 5 meningiomas, 3 metastatic, 1 craniopharyngioma, 1 Rathke cyst, and 1 mucocele. Gross total excision was achieved in 57.1%, subtotal excision occurred in 37.5%, and decompression and biopsy were achieved in 5.4% patients. Postoperative vision normalized or improved in 27 patients (86.1%) and was stable in 4 patients (13.9%). Recovery of a preexisting hormonal deficit occurred in 13 (23.2%) patients, and a new hormonal deficit occurred in 9 patients (16.1%). The mean hospital stay was 6.1 ± 4.9 days. Postoperative complications included cerebrospinal fluid leak in 8 patients (14.3%). Four patients (7.1%) had meningitis. Diabetes insipidus was present in 19 patients (33.9%), and postoperative intracranial hematoma requiring evacuation was necessary in 2 patients (3.6%). The mean follow-up duration was 47.5 ± 25.8 months. Lesion progression or recurrence requiring redo surgery occurred in 5 patients (8.9%). Regarding the learning curve, the postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak, meningitis, new hormonal deficits, and diabetes insipidus decreased in the second half of the patients.

CONCLUSIONS

EES provides an effective and safe surgical option with low morbidity and mortality for the treatment of sellar, suprasellar, and anterior skull base lesions in a community hospital setting.

Global scientific trends on aflatoxin research during 1998-2017: a bibliometric and visualized study

BACKGROUND

Aflatoxins are fungal metabolites associated with contaminated food products. Intake of aflatoxin-contaminated food results in serious health hazards and even death. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the global scientific output of research of aflatoxin by using bibliometric techniques.

METHODS

This bibliometric study was conducted using Scopus database and classified the retrieved publications were classified from different aspects, including the countries/region of focus, journals, authors, institutes, citations, and content analysis to discover any hot and emerging topics. In addition, the bibliometric analysis of the international collaborative network and hot research topics were generated by VOSviewer© software version 1.6.10. The publication period was restricted in the search for two decades (1998-2017).

RESULTS

The search engine of the Scopus database found 9845 documents published in the field of aflatoxin. The USA is the top publishing source in the world (22.85%), followed by China (11.85%), India (9.32%), and Italy (5.25%). In earlier years, researchers focused on terms related to the topics of "sources and biosynthesis of aflatoxin", "health effects by aflatoxin", and "detoxification and treatment of aflatoxin". However, in recent years, researchers pay more attention to the topic of detection and quantification of aflatoxin.

CONCLUSIONS

The quantity of research in global aflatoxin has substantially increased over the past two decades. The evaluation of the historical status and development trend in aflatoxin scientific research can guide future research, and ultimately provide the basis for improving management procedures for governmental decisions, healthcare, industries, and educational institutions.

Identification of an early diagnostic biomarker of lung adenocarcinoma based on co-expression similarity and construction of a diagnostic model

Background

The purpose of this study was to achieve early and accurate diagnosis of lung cancer and long-term monitoring of the therapeutic response.

Methods

We downloaded GSE20189 from GEO database as analysis data. We also downloaded human lung adenocarcinoma RNA-seq transcriptome expression data from the TCGA database as validation data. Finally, the expression of all of the genes underwent z test normalization. We used ANOVA to identify differentially expressed genes specific to each stage, as well as the intersection between them. Two methods, correlation analysis and co-expression network analysis, were used to compare the expression patterns and topological properties of each stage. Using the functional quantification algorithm, we evaluated the functional level of each significantly enriched biological function under different stages. A machine-learning algorithm was used to screen out significant functions as features and to establish an early diagnosis model. Finally, survival analysis was used to verify the correlation between the outcome and the biomarkers that we found.

Results

We screened 12 significant biomarkers that could distinguish lung cancer patients with diverse risks. Patients carrying variations in these 12 genes also presented a poor outcome in terms of survival status compared with patients without variations.

Conclusions

We propose a new molecular-based noninvasive detection method. According to the expression of the stage-specific gene set in the peripheral blood of patients with lung cancer, the difference in the functional level is quantified to realize the early diagnosis and prediction of lung cancer.
