Anthropometric Analysis of Nasolabial Region and Age-Related Changes in Adult Women

Glucose uptake and distribution across the human skeleton using state-of-the-art total-body PET/CT

A growing number of studies have demonstrated that the skeleton is an endocrine organ that is involved in glucose metabolism and plays a significant role in human glucose homeostasis. However, there is still a limited understanding of the in vivo glucose uptake and distribution across the human skeleton. To address this issue, we aimed to elucidate the detailed profile of glucose uptake across the skeleton using a total-body positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. A total of 41 healthy participants were recruited. Two of them received a 1-hour dynamic total-body ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (¹⁸F-FDG) PET scan, and all of them received a 10-minute static total-body ¹⁸F-FDG PET scan. The net influx rate (K_i) and standardized uptake value normalized by lean body mass (SUL) were calculated as indicators of glucose uptake from the dynamic and static PET data, respectively. The results showed that the vertebrae, hip bone and skull had relatively high K_i and SUL values compared with metabolic organs such as the liver. Both the K_i and SUL were higher in the epiphyseal, metaphyseal and cortical regions of long bones. Moreover, trends associated with age and overweight with glucose uptake (SUL_max and SUL_mean) in bones were uncovered. Overall, these results indicate that the skeleton is a site with significant glucose uptake, and skeletal glucose uptake can be affected by age and dysregulated metabolism.

Nasal Anthropometric Analysis in Turkish Rhinoplasty Patients

This study aimed to determine the mean values of the nasal anthropometric measurements through 2-dimensional photogrammetry in for rhinoplasty patients. The study group included 72 healthy individuals, 36 men, and 36 women. The patients were aged 18 to 42 years. All patients had undergone primary rhinoplasty in our clinic between 2013 and 2020. Seven landmarks were identified from the preoperative photographs taken with the patient's head in neutral position in the frontal and lateral planes. Five distances (total nasal length, nasal bridge length, morphological nose width, alar length, and nasal tip protrusion) and 2 angles (nasofrontal and nasolabial) measurements were calculated. We noted a statistically significant difference between the male and female sexes in terms of total nasal length and morphological nose width (P<0.05). The results were compared with the nasal anthropometric measurements reported in the literature for the Turkish population as well as other ethnic groups. We believe results of this study may facilitate preoperative planning in Turkish patients who request rhinoplasty and improve the success rate of the surgery.

External Nose Anthropometry of Healthy Turkish Young Adults

Although many studies in the literature examine distances and angles about the nose, there are no clear standard values for different races and ethnic groups. The aim of this study is to determine the anthropometric measurement standards related to the external nose in Turkish young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. The subjects participating in this study were 100 female and 100 male volunteers. Six landmarks (nasion, subnasale, pronasale, alar, subalar and maxillofrontale) on the nose were chosen, and these landmarks were identified on the photographs. Then, using these landmarks, a total of seven distances (nose height, dorsum of nose length, distance between the subnasale and pronasale, nose width, right nostril floor width, left nostril floor width and root of nose width) and four angles (nasofrontal, nasofacial, nasomental and nasolabial angles) measurements were made. There were statistically significant differences between gender in nine parameters. One parameter (nasofrontal angle) is higher in females, and seven parameters (nose height, dorsum of nose length, nose width, right nostril floor width, left nostril floor width, root of nose width and nasofacial angle) are higher in males. It is accepted that distances and angles about the nose differ according to race and ethnicity. The authors believe that the results obtained in this study will help determine the standard values that can be used for the Turkish population between the ages of 18 and 25.
