Correlation of Palatal Index With Pharyngeal Airway in Various Skeletal Patterns

Introduction This retrospective study aimed to correlate palatal index with pharyngeal airway in class I, class II and class III skeletal patterns. Materials and methods A total of 30 individuals with a mean age of 17.5 years were included in the study. The subjects were categorized on the basis of ANB (A point, nasion, B point) angle into skeletal class I, II, and III patterns (N=10). Using Korkhaus analysis, palatal height, palatal breadth, and palatal height index were calculated from the study models. From the lateral cephalogram, the dimensions of the upper and lower pharyngeal airways were measured using McNamara Airway Analysis. The results were calculated using the ANOVA test. Results A statistically significant difference was found in all three groups of class I, II, and III malocclusions for palatal index and airway dimensions. The skeletal class II malocclusion participants exhibited the highest mean values for the palatal index (P=0.03). Class I had the highest mean value for the upper airway (P=0.041), whereas class III had the highest mean value for the lower airway (P=0.026). Conclusion It was concluded that subjects with the class II skeletal pattern have a high palate and reduced upper and lower airways when compared with class I and class III skeletal patterns, which showed larger upper and lower airways, respectively.

Correlation of Three Dimensions of Palate with Maxillary Arch Form and Perimeter as Predictive Measures for Orthodontic and Orthognathic Surgery

Hard palate is regarded as an important part of the human skull, which contributes to the separation of the oral and nasal cavities. The aims of the study were to investigate the morphology of the hard palate in order to create a general guideline of three-dimensional values of the palate in a Kurdish sample in the city of Sulaimani as well as determining the possible correlations between different palatal parameters in class I malocclusion with the maxillary arch form and perimeter. A retrospective study design was adopted by collecting 100 study models of orthodontic patients aged 16–24 years old attending different private dental clinics in the city of Sulaimani seeking orthodontic management. In this study, three-dimensional palatal measurements including depth, length, and width were measured in an attempt to discover their correlation with each maxillary arch form and perimeter. Additionally, measurements of inter-molar width, inter-canine width, and arch perimeter were carried out. About two-thirds of those seeking orthodontic treatment were females. Nearly 80% of the study sample had narrow palate followed by 15 and 5% of intermediate palate and broad palate, respectively. In regard to arch form, almost 90% of subjects were with tapered maxillary arch form and 10% of them with oval arch form. Males had increased dimensions compared to females, with significant differences, except in palatal depth in the molar area, and palatine height index, in which females showed increased dimensions than males but the differences were statistically non-significant. A strong positive correlation was observed between arch form and canine depth. In regard to arch perimeter, a strong negative correlation was found with molar depth and a medium positive correlation with each of canine depth, palatal width, and palatal length.

Palatal dimensions at different stages of dentition in 5 to 18-year-old Iranian children and adolescent with normal occlusion

BACKGROUND

This study was purposed to evaluate palatal width, height, and height index at various stages of dentition in Iranian children and adolescent with normal occlusion.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 237 children (45% male and 55% female, aged 5-18 years) with normal occlusion selected from kindergartens and elementary and high schools in Hamadan, Iran. The subjects were clinically examined and classified based on dentition to primary (21.5%), mixed (21.9%), and permanent (56.5%) stages. Dental casts were obtained from all subjects. Palatal width (inter-molar and -canine distances), and height (at molar and canine areas) were measured on the casts by Korkhaus' compass and digital caliper. Palatal height index was calculated for each dentition stage. Data were analyzed by SPSS 15 using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test and t- test (p <  0.05).

RESULTS

Palatal inter-molar and -canine width values were increased from primary to permanent dentition. Palatal height and palatal height index in mixed dentition were significantly lower than those in primary and permanent dentition. Palatal width at inter-molar and -canine distances was significantly higher in males than females. There was no significant difference in palatal height and palatal height index at molar area between males and females. However, palatal height and palatal height index at canine area were significantly higher in males compared to females.

CONCLUSION

These findings showed that palatal width increased from primary to permanent stage. Palatal height and palatal height index decrease from primary to mixed dentation, then increase from mixed to permanent dentition.
