Abstract
This study explored the relationships between objective measures of cognitive functioning, self and informant reports of cognitive problems in daily life, and depression screening in older adults who had been referred because of reported or suspected cognitive changes. We used archival data from 100, predominantly White (97%), typically educated (M = 13.25 years), older adults (M = 70.38 years) who received an outpatient neuropsychological evaluation. We characterized the cognitive performance using the CVLT-II Total score. We characterized patient and collateral reports using the BRIEF-A MI index, a normed scale of cognitive problems in daily life. We also incorporated a depression screener (PHQ-9) into our analyses. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that only the informant reported problems in daily life, using the BRIEF-A MI index, was a significant predictor of objective cognitive deficits, as defined by CVLT-II Total scores. Self BRIEF-A MI index scores were not significant predictors of CVLT-II Total performance after we accounted for depression using the patient's PHQ-9 score. Additionally, elevated depression widened the discrepancy between raters, with elevated depression associated with worsening sself-report scores compared to informant-reported scores. As informant-reported problems were the strongest predictor of cognitive deficits, we recommend routine collection of collateral informant reports in the neuropsychological evaluation of older adults referred for cognitive concerns. We also recommend incorporating self-ratings of daily life functioning and screening for depression to contextualize patient complaints and address their concerns, even in the absence of objective cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was developed to briefly measure a broad range of cognitive abilities, but it initially lacked a scale to evaluate executive functioning. Robert Spencer and colleagues recently created an Executive Errors scale (RBANS-EE) that quantified executive functioning (EF) errors committed during four RBANS subtests: List Learning, Semantic Fluency, Coding, and List Recall. In the present paper we cross-validated the RBANS-EE with a sample of 234 U.S. military veterans (M AGE = 67.2, SD = 11.5 years; M EDUCATION = 13.3, SD = 2.4 years) who completed the RBANS and various EF criterion measures as part of neuropsychological assessments they underwent during their clinical care. We found the RBANS-EE to be significantly correlated with most of the criterion EF measures. The RBANS-EE scale demonstrated modest ability to classify EF impairment at mild and severe levels; and, similarly, the RBANS-EE was modestly capable of accurately classifying those veteran respondents who were determined to have or to not have a neurocognitive disorder. Overall, the RBANS-EE can be quickly calculated, adds no administration time to an RBANS assessment, and yields useful scores to screen for EF dysfunction without replacing standalone EF tests.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are two disorders known to lead to executive dysfunction, presumably through distinct pathways to the frontal lobes via the striatum or cerebellum, respectively. Memory functioning in PD and ET patients has been previously suggested to be adversely impacted by executive dysfunction. The aims of this exploratory study were to compare memory performance between and within groups on the California Verbal Learning Test - 3 (CVLT-3) through the analysis of core and process scores and to understand the relationship of these scores with measures of executive functioning. METHOD Seventy PD and 54 ET patients completed comprehensive neuropsychological testing. Independent sample t-tests or Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare between group core and process scores on the CVLT-3. Within-subjects analyses were conducted via Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test due to nonparametric data. Spearman's correlations were conducted to explore the relationship between memory process scores and measures of executive functioning. RESULTS The ET and PD samples were similar with regard to age, education, gender, and general cognitive functioning. PD patients made more repetition errors (U = 2391.50, p = .01) than ET patients and Normal Memory PD patients made more repetition errors than Low Memory PD patients (U= 711.00, p= .00). Correlational analyses revealed repetition errors were negatively associated with tests of inhibition, set shifting, and working memory (rs = -.293, -.232). ET patients demonstrated a preference for a serial cluster learning strategy (T = 861.00, p = .005), similar to PD patients (T= 1633.00, p = <.001). CONCLUSIONS The study revealed presence of higher repetition errors in the PD sample that was demonstrated to have a negative relationship with measures of executive functioning. Implications for investigating process ("qualitative") scores in memory performance to determine extent of executive involvement are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION On some list-learning tasks, such as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) or Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT), examinees have the opportunity to group words based on semantically related categories (i.e., semantic clustering). Semantic clustering (SC) is often considered the most efficient organizational strategy and adopting SC is presumed to improve learning and memory. In addition, SC is conceptualized as reflecting higher-order executive functioning skills. Although SC measures have intuitive appeal, to date, there are no comprehensive reviews of the SC literature base that summarize its psychometric utility. In this systematic review, we synthesize the literature to judge the validity of SC scores. METHOD We conducted a systematic literature search for empirical articles reporting SC from the CVLT and HVLT. We qualitatively described the relationship of SC with other list-learning and cognitive test scores and clinical diagnoses, contrasting SC with serial clustering and total learning scores when possible. RESULTS SC was inversely correlated with serial clustering. Higher SC was strongly associated with better learning and memory performances. When compared with cognitive tests, SC tended to have the strongest relationships with other memory measures and modest relationships with tests of executive functioning. SC had negligible to small relationships with most other cognitive domains. Traditional memory scores yielded stronger relationships to cognitive test performances than did SC. SC across clinical groups varied widely, but clinical groups tended to use SC less often than healthy comparison groups. CONCLUSION Our comprehensive review of the literature revealed that SC is strongly related to measures of learning and memory on the CVLT and HVLT and is correlated with a wide range of cognitive functions. SC has been understudied in relevant populations and additional research is needed to test the degree to which it adds incremental validity beyond traditional measures of learning and memory.

Abstract
Background and objectives Cognitive decline is an important early sign in pre-motor manifest Huntington's disease (preHD) and is characterized by deficits across multiple domains including executive function, psychomotor processing speed, and memory retrieval. Prior work suggested that the Loewenstein-Acevedo Scale for Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L)-a verbal learning task that simultaneously targets these domains - could capture early cognitive changes in preHD. The current study aimed to replicate, validate and further analyze the LASSI-L in preHD using larger datasets. Methods LASSI-L was administered to 50 participants (25 preHD and 25 Healthy Controls) matched for age, education, and sex in a longitudinal study of disease progression and compared to performance on MMSE, Trail A & B, SCWT, SDMT, Semantic Fluency (Animals), and CVLT-II. Performance was then compared to a separate age-education matched-cohort of 25 preHD participants. Receiver operating curve (ROC) and practice effects (12 month interval) were investigated. Group comparisons were repeated using a preHD subgroup restricted to participants predicted to be far from diagnosis (Far subgroup), based on CAG-Age-Product scaled (CAPs) score. Construct validity was assessed through correlations with previously established measures of subcortical atrophy. Results PreHD performance on all sections of the LASSI-L was significantly different from controls. The proactive semantic interference section (PSI) was sensitive (p = 0.0001, d = 1.548), similar across preHD datasets (p = 1.0), reliable on test-retest over 12 months (spearman rho = 0.88; p = <0.00001) and associated with an excellent area under ROC (AUROC) of 0.855. In the preHD Far subgroup comparison, PSI was the only cognitive assessment to survive FDR < 0.05 (p = 0.03). The number of intrusions on PSI was negatively correlated with caudate volume. Discussion The LASSI-L is a sensitive, reliable, efficient tool for detecting cognitive decline in preHD. By using a unique verbal learning test paradigm that simultaneously targets executive function, processing speed and memory retrieval, the LASSI-L outperforms many other established tests and captures early signs of cognitive impairment. With further longitudinal validation, the LASSI-L could prove to be a useful biomarker for clinical research in preHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of manifest Huntington disease (HD) is based primarily on motor symptoms, but premanifest HD (preHD) is often associated with subtle cognitive decline. The Loewenstein-Acevedo Scales for Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L) is a validated verbal learning test that can be used to detect early cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE To determine the utility of the LASSI-L for detecting early cognitive decline in individuals with preHD and to compare the results of the LASSI-L with those of commonly used neuropsychological tests in HD. METHOD We administered the LASSI-L to 13 individuals with preHD and 13 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and education as part of a longitudinal study of disease progression. For comparison purposes, we administered the Mini-Mental State Examination; Stroop Color and Word Test; Symbol Digit Modalities Test; Trail-Making Test, Parts A and B; and category fluency (animals) task. RESULTS Five of the seven sections on the LASSI-L captured group differences: Proactive Semantic Interference (PSI; P < 0.001), Failure to Recover From PSI ( P = 0.038), Retroactive Semantic Interference (RSI; P = 0.013), Delayed Recall ( P < 0.001), and B1 Cued Recall Intrusions ( P = 0.036). Using a false discovery rate of <0.05, PSI, RSI, and Delayed Recall remained significant. CONCLUSION The LASSI-L is a sensitive instrument for detecting early interference effects in individuals with preHD that outperforms commonly used neuropsychological tests. The LASSI-L could be a useful addition to clinical and research protocols involving individuals with preHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In healthy people, sleep and circadian disruption are linked to cognitive deficits. People with Huntington's disease (HD), who have compromised brain function and sleep and circadian disturbances, may be even more susceptible to these cognitive effects. OBJECTIVE To conduct a comprehensive review and synthesis of the literature in HD on the associations of cognitive dysfunction with disturbed sleep and circadian rhythms. METHODS We searched MEDLINE via OVID, CINAHL Plus, EMBASE via OVID, and PubMed in May 2023. The first author then screened by title and abstract and conducted a full review of remaining articles. RESULTS Eight studies investigating the influence of sleep and/or circadian rhythms on cognitive function in HD were found. In manifest HD, poorer sleep was associated with worse cognitive function. For behavioral 24-hour (circadian) rhythms, two studies indicated that later wake times correlated with poorer cognitive function. No reported studies in HD examined altered physiological 24-hour (circadian) rhythms and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION Some associations exist between poor sleep and cognitive dysfunction in manifest HD, yet whether these associations are present before clinical diagnosis is unknown. Whether circadian disturbances relate to cognitive impairment in HD also remains undetermined. To inform sleep and circadian interventions aimed at improving cognitive symptoms in HD, future research should include a range of disease stages, control for external factors, and utilize robust cognitive batteries targeted to the aspects of cognitive function known to be adversely affected in HD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) is a brief, standardized neuropsychological test that assesses several areas of cognitive function. Recent studies, although sparse, have examined the use of the RBANS to detect cognitive deficits in individuals with manifest Huntington disease (HD); however, no studies have investigated its utility to detect cognitive deficits in individuals with premanifest HD (PreHD), where cognitive symptoms are thought to be more subtle. OBJECTIVE To assess cognitive deficits in individuals with HD, particularly in individuals with PreHD, using an easily administered, brief but comprehensive, neuropsychological test. METHOD We administered the RBANS to 31 individuals with HD, 29 individuals with PreHD, and 22 healthy controls (HC) at an academic HD clinical research center and collected RBANS Total, Index, and subtest scores for group comparisons. RESULTS The HD group had significantly lower RBANS Total, Index, and subtest scores than the HC. The PreHD group had significantly lower RBANS Total scores and Coding subtest scores than the HC, but no other significant group differences were identified. CONCLUSION Our results substantiate previous findings of significant impairment on the RBANS in individuals with HD. In addition, we are the first to demonstrate that, although the RBANS can identify deficits in psychomotor speed and information processing in individuals with PreHD, it does not appear to have the ability to detect impairment in any additional cognitive domains in individuals with PreHD.

Abstract
Background Several studies have suggested that cognitive processing speed may be useful for assessing early cognitive change in premanifest Huntington's disease (HD); however, current measures lack the ability to control for the effects of motor dysfunction commonly found in HD. The Computerized Test of Information Processing (CTiP) is a rapidly administered computerized tool that allows for the examination of central cognitive processing speed by using motor-corrected scores to account for motor dysfunction. Objective To examine central cognitive processing speed as an early marker of HD onset using the CTiP. Methods The CTiP and other measures were administered to 102 HD gene carriers and 55 healthy adults (HA). Gene carriers included presymptomatic HD (pre-HD; n = 33), prodromal HD (pro-HD; ie, individuals close to disease onset; n = 23), and mild-moderate HD (HD; n = 46). Results The HD group performed significantly slower than all other groups (HA, pre-HD, and pro-HD) on most subtests (Ps < .05). Moreover, the pro-HD group performed significantly slower than the HA group on both motor-corrected subtests (Ps < 0.05). Effect sizes associated with significant group differences between the pro-HD and HA groups on motor-corrected CTiP subtests (d = 0.73 and 0.84) were similar to effect sizes associated with group differences on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (d = .82) and other traditional cognitive assessments (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, d = .75; Mini-Mental State Examination, d = .84). Conclusions The CTiP may be a useful marker of deficits in central cognitive processing speed in individuals close to manifest onset of HD.
