Contrast sensitivity and behavioural evidence for lateral inhibition in octopus

The marine gastropod Conomurex luhuanus (Strombidae) has high-resolution spatial vision and eyes with complex retinas

All species within the conch snail family Strombidae possess large camera-type eyes that are surprisingly well-developed compared with those found in most other gastropods. Although these eyes are known to be structurally complex, very little research on their visual function has been conducted. Here, we use isoluminant expanding visual stimuli to measure the spatial resolution and contrast sensitivity of a strombid, Conomurex luhuanus. Using these stimuli, we show that this species responds to objects as small as 1.06 deg in its visual field. We also show that C. luhuanus responds to Michelson contrasts of 0.07, a low contrast sensitivity between object and background. The defensive withdrawal response elicited by visual stimuli of such small angular size and low contrast suggests that conch snails may use spatial vision for the early detection of potential predators. We support these findings with morphological estimations of spatial resolution of 1.04 deg. These anatomical data therefore agree with the behavioural measures and highlight the benefits of integrating behavioural and morphological approaches in animal vision studies. Using contemporary imaging techniques [serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM), in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy (TEM)], we found that C. luhuanus have more complex retinas, in terms of cell type diversity, than expected based on previous studies of the group using TEM alone. We find the C. luhuanus retina comprises six cell types, including a newly identified ganglion cell and accessory photoreceptor, rather than the previously described four cell types.

Summary: Behavioural trials indicate the eyes of conch snail Conomurex luhuanus provide high-resolution spatial vision, and morphological examination reveals the retina contains more cell types than those of other gastropods.

Angular dependence of polarisation contrast sensitivity in octopus

Cephalopod photoreceptors are polarisation-sensitive, giving them an ability to discriminate between lights of different angle and degree of polarisation. While colour vision is achieved by comparison of signals of photoreceptors tuned to different parts of light spectra, polarisation vision is achieved by comparison of signals of photoreceptors tuned to different orientations of e-vector. Therefore, from a theoretical point of view, polarisation vision is similar to colour vision. In particular, detection of polarised light against an unpolarised background is analogous to detection of chromatic light against grey. The dependence of polarisation contrast sensitivity on the angle of polarisation can be theoretically predicted using a receptor noise limited model in much the same way as it has been done for predicting the shape of the increment threshold spectral sensitivity in animals with colour vision. Here we report angular dependence of polarisation contrast sensitivity in octopus (O. tetricus, Gould 1852) and compare the theoretical predictions of polarisation contrast with the experimental results. Polarisation gratings were generated using LCD screens with removed polarisers and the orientation of polarisation was changed by rotating the screen. Reaction to the stimulus was recorded using a fixation reflex. We show that, in agreement with the theoretical predictions, the maximum contrast sensitivity is achieved at horizontal and vertical orientations of polarisation. Our results demonstrate that the dependence of polarisation contrast sensitivity on the angle of polarisation can be analysed in the same way as the dependence of colour thresholds on wavelength of monochromatic light added to a grey background.

Multiple Routes to Animal Consciousness: Constrained Multiple Realizability Rather Than Modest Identity Theory

The multiple realizability thesis (MRT) is an important philosophical and psychological concept. It says any mental state can be constructed by multiple realizability (MR), meaning in many distinct ways from different physical parts. The goal of our study is to find if the MRT applies to the mental state of consciousness among animals. Many things have been written about MRT but the ones most applicable to animal consciousness are by Shapiro in a 2004 book called The Mind Incarnate and by Polger and Shapiro in their 2016 work, The Multiple Realization Book. Standard, classical MRT has been around since 1967 and it says that a mental state can have very many different physical realizations, in a nearly unlimited manner. To the contrary, Shapiro's book reasoned that physical, physiological, and historical constraints force mental traits to evolve in just a few, limited directions, which is seen as convergent evolution of the associated neural traits in different animal lineages. This is his mental constraint thesis (MCT). We examined the evolution of consciousness in animals and found that it arose independently in just three animal clades-vertebrates, arthropods, and cephalopod mollusks-all of which share many consciousness-associated traits: elaborate sensory organs and brains, high capacity for memory, directed mobility, etc. These three constrained, convergently evolved routes to consciousness fit Shapiro's original MCT. More recently, Polger and Shapiro's book presented much the same thesis but changed its name from MCT to a "modest identity thesis." Furthermore, they argued against almost all the classically offered instances of MR in animal evolution, especially against the evidence of neural plasticity and the differently expanded cerebrums of mammals and birds. In contrast, we argue that some of these classical examples of MR are indeed valid and that Shapiro's original MCT correction of MRT is the better account of the evolution of consciousness in animal clades. And we still agree that constraints and convergence refute the standard, nearly unconstrained, MRT.

Spatial Contrast Sensitivity to Polarization and Luminance in Octopus

While color vision is achieved by comparison of signals of photoreceptors tuned to different parts of light spectra, polarization vision is achieved by comparison of signals of photoreceptors tuned to different orientations of the electric field component of visible light. Therefore, it has been suggested that polarization vision is similar to color vision. In most animals that have color vision, the shape of luminance contrast sensitivity curve differs from the shape of chromatic contrast sensitivity curve. While luminance contrast sensitivity typically decreases at low spatial frequency due to lateral inhibition, chromatic contrast sensitivity generally remains high at low spatial frequency. To find out if the processing of polarization signals is similar to the processing of chromatic signals, we measured the polarization and luminance contrast sensitivity dependence in a color-blind animal with well-developed polarization vision, Octopus tetricus. We demonstrate that, in Octopus tetricus, both luminance and polarization contrast sensitivity decrease at low spatial frequency and peak at the same spatial frequency (0.3 cpd). These results suggest that, in octopus, polarization and luminance signals are processed via similar pathways.

Contrast sensitivity and behavioural evidence for lateral inhibition in octopus

Behavioural contrast sensitivity in Octopus tetricus was measured in the range of 0.05-12 cycles per degree (cpd) using a fixation reflex. We show that the contrast sensitivity reaches its maximum (between 1 and 4%) at 0.3 cpd, and decreases to approximately half of the maximum value at the lowest spatial frequency. Reduction of sensitivity at low spatial frequency is a signature of lateral inhibition in visual systems. In vertebrates and insects, lateral inhibition helps to overcome the bottleneck of encoding information into spikes. In octopus, photoreceptors generate spikes themselves and are directly connected to the brain through their axons. Therefore, the neural processing occurring in the octopus brain cannot help overcome the bottleneck of encoding information into spikes. We conclude that, in octopus, either the lateral inhibition occurs in the brain after information has been encoded into spikes, or photoreceptors inhibit each other. This is the first time behavioural contrast sensitivity has been measured in a cephalopod.
