Fluctuating noise drives Brownian transport

Phase Dependent Vectorial Current Control in Symmetric Noisy Optical Ratchets

In this work, we demonstrate single microparticle transport in a symmetric noisy optical ratchet made with a linear array of 20 optical potentials, where each potential is a spatially symmetric low power (<2.5  mW) three-dimensional trap. Both the external force F(t) and the depth V_{0i}(t) of the optical potentials are dynamic and change at the same frequency ν=2  Hz. The depths of the individual optical potentials are random (uncorrelated noise) distributed around a mean value V_{0}, ⟨V_{0i}(t)⟩=V_{0}, while the external force is periodic and unbiased ⟨F(t)⟩=0. The system is completely symmetric for times t≫1/ν. Directed transport is possible as a result of the symmetry being broken at times on the order of 1/ν. We find that the direction and speed of motion (current) are coupled to the phase difference between the noise in the optical potentials and the external periodic force.

Noise-enabled optical ratchets

In this contribution, we report on the implementation of a novel noise-enabled optical ratchet system. We demonstrate that, unlike commonly-used ratchet schemes-where complex asymmetric optical potentials are needed-efficient transport of microparticles across a one-dimensional optical lattice can be produced by introducing controllable noise in the system. This work might open interesting routes towards the development of new technologies aimed at enhancing the efficiency of transport occurring at the micro- and nanoscale, from novel particle-sorting tools to efficient molecular motors.

Entropic stochastic resonance enables trapping under periodic confinement: a Brownian-dynamics study

Entropically mediated phenomena are of emerging interest as a driving force for microscale and nanoscale transport, but their underlying stochastic nature makes them challenging to rationally manipulate and control. Stochastic resonance offers an intriguing avenue to overcome these difficulties by establishing a clear connection between the system response (the output) and an externally imposed driving force (the input). Previous studies have generally adopted a signal-processing viewpoint to classify the output in terms of a signal-to-noise ratio, but this link does not convey information that is immediately useful to infer parameters relevant to transport. Here we address this issue by applying Brownian-dynamics simulations to elucidate the residence time distribution encountered by a particle as it travels through a channel incorporating periodic constrictions. A sinusoidal longitudinal driving force is applied with a superimposed continuous orthogonal component, making it possible to identify frequency and amplitude conditions where temporal coherence with the particle's motion can be achieved. This resonant state reflects a synergistic combination of geometry and driving force that can be exploited to confine species at discrete locations, offering possibilities for directed manipulation.

Circadian clocks optimally adapt to sunlight for reliable synchronization

Circadian oscillation provides selection advantages through synchronization to the daylight cycle. However, a reliable clock must be designed through two conflicting properties: entrainability to synchronize internal time with periodic stimuli such as sunlight, and regularity to oscillate with a precise period. These two aspects do not easily coexist, because better entrainability favours higher sensitivity which may sacrifice regularity. To investigate conditions for satisfying the two properties, we analytically calculated the optimal phase-response curve with a variational method. Our results indicate an existence of a dead zone, i.e. a time period during which input stimuli neither advance nor delay the clock. A dead zone appears only when input stimuli obey the time course of actual solar radiation, but a simple sine curve cannot yield a dead zone. Our calculation demonstrates that every circadian clock with a dead zone is optimally adapted to the daylight cycle.

Enhanced entrainability of genetic oscillators by period mismatch

Biological oscillators coordinate individual cellular components so that they function coherently and collectively. They are typically composed of multiple feedback loops, and period mismatch is unavoidable in biological implementations. We investigated the advantageous effect of this period mismatch in terms of a synchronization response to external stimuli. Specifically, we considered two fundamental models of genetic circuits: smooth and relaxation oscillators. Using phase reduction and Floquet multipliers, we numerically analysed their entrainability under different coupling strengths and period ratios. We found that a period mismatch induces better entrainment in both types of oscillator; the enhancement occurs in the vicinity of the bifurcation on their limit cycles. In the smooth oscillator, the optimal period ratio for the enhancement coincides with the experimentally observed ratio, which suggests biological exploitation of the period mismatch. Although the origin of multiple feedback loops is often explained as a passive mechanism to ensure robustness against perturbation, we study the active benefits of the period mismatch, which include increasing the efficiency of the genetic oscillators. Our findings show a qualitatively different perspective for both the inherent advantages of multiple loops and their essentiality.
