Critical adsorption of multiple polyelectrolytes onto a nanosphere: splitting the adsorption-desorption transition boundary

Critical adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto highly oppositely charged surfaces: Effects of charge renormalization

The critical adsorption conditions of polyelectrolytes (PEs) onto planar, cylindrical, and spherical surfaces were obtained by solving the Edwards equation using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method. It demonstrated to provide a suitable analytical approach for all three geometries, in conformity with some experimental results for weakly charged micelles. However, our Monte Carlo simulations implementing approximate solutions of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation for highly charged surfaces indicated recently the emergence of a limiting value of ionic strength due to a nonlinear dependence of the electrostatic (ES) potential on the surface-charge density σ. Beyond this limiting ionic strength, the PE adsorption no longer occurs, shifting the standard paradigm. In this work, we employ the concept of a renormalized charge and use the WKB method to study the effects of this nonlinearity on the critical adsorption conditions, density profile, and adsorbed layer of PE segments, all in comparison with the results of the linear Debye-Hückel (DH) approach. Charge renormalization makes it possible to use the known WKB solutions in the DH regime also for surfaces with high σ, introducing a saturation effect observed in the nonlinear case. The larger ES screening affects the density profile and the adsorbed layer of PEs, promoting a more dispersed distribution of PEs at higher surface-charge densities. Our analytical results for the critical adsorption curve reproduce the limiting ionic strength for high σ and also recover the DH regime at low σ.

Application of the symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory to a model colloidal mixture

A symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory is used to analyse the structure of a primitive model colloidal system which contains either 4 or 6 components. The approach symmetrizes the pair distribution function gij(r) between two asymmetric charged species with respect to an interchange of the indices. Good agreement is found with molecular dynamics simulation structural properties when the exclusion volume term is modelled by the Percus-Yevick uncharged hard sphere radial distribution function.

Scaling regimes for wormlike chains confined to cylindrical surfaces under tension

We compute the free energy of confinement [Formula: see text] for a wormlike chain (WLC), with persistence length [Formula: see text], that is confined to the surface of a cylinder of radius R under an external tension f using a mean field variational approach. For long chains, we analytically determine the behavior of the chain in a variety of regimes, which are demarcated by the interplay of [Formula: see text], the Odijk deflection length ([Formula: see text]), and the Pincus length ([Formula: see text], with [Formula: see text] being the thermal energy). The theory accurately reproduces the Odijk scaling for strongly confined chains at [Formula: see text], with [Formula: see text]. For moderate values of f, the Odijk scaling is discernible only when [Formula: see text] for strongly confined chains. Confinement does not significantly alter the scaling of the mean extension for sufficiently high tension. The theory is used to estimate unwrapping forces for DNA from nucleosomes.

Simulation on diffusivity and statistical size of polymer chains in polymer nanocomposites

The dynamical and conformational properties of polymer chains are affected significantly by strongly attractive nanoparticles. The adsorption of polymer chains on nanoparticles not only reduces the dynamics but also changes the conformation of polymer chains. For orderly distributed nanoparticles of size roughly the same as the radius of gyration of polymer chains, the variation of the diffusivity is highly related to that of the statistical size and can be explained mainly from the adsorption of polymers. In particular, both the polymer's size and diffusivity reach the minimum when the number of polymer chains matches the number of nanoparticles where polymer chains are mostly adsorbed on separate nanoparticles. The behavior of diffusivity can be explained from the cooperation of polymer adsorption and nanoparticle-exchange motion. Adsorption of the polymer chain slows down the diffusion, whereas the nanoparticle-exchange motion accelerates the diffusion of polymer chains.
