Gold nanoparticles stabilized with sulphonated imidazolium salts in water and reverse micelles

Heteroleptic Silver(I) and Gold(I) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes: Structural Characterization, Computational Analysis, Tyrosinase Inhibitory, and Biological Effects

Derivatization of (NHC)M-Cl (M = Ag, Au) with selected sulfur donors from the family of dialkyldithiophosphates and bis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate ligands gave a series of heteroleptic mononuclear complexes. In single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, Ag(I) complexes adopted a trigonal planar geometry, while Au(I) complexes are near-linear. TD-DFT and hole-electron analyses of the selected complexes gave insight into the electronic features of the metal complexes. In vitro cellular tests were conducted on the human cancerous breast cell line MCF-7 using 2 and 8. The antibacterial activities of complexes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and IPr-Ag-Cl were also screened against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus PTCC 1112) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli PTCC 1330) bacteria. Antityrosinase and hemolytic effects of the selected compounds were also determined.

Influence of twin-headed gemini micellar system on the study of methionine amino acid with ninhydrin in buffer solution

The influence of double-headed gemini was examined in the present study by studying the amino acid methionine mixed with ninhydrin in CH₃COOH-CH₃COONa buffer solvent. The absorbance was monitored at fixed time intervals with UV-vis spectroscopy. An impact typical of surfactants was observed on the ninhydrin-methionine reaction and explained by a pseudo-phase model of micelles. The effect of different temperatures (343 to 363 K) was also determined. Based on data showing the impact of temperature on k_ψ , several relevant thermodynamic quantities, ΔH ^#, ΔS ^#, and E _a, were calculated using linear least-squares regression. In addition, the influence of the other reaction ingredients on the reaction, that is, pH and the concentration of ninhydrin and methionine, was studied. The CMC (critical micelle concentration) of pure geminis and the surfactant system with methionine and ninhydrin was evaluated at two temperatures, i.e. at 303 K and 353 K by conductivity measurements. The CMC values of pure gemini surfactants evaluated in the existing case at 303 K are concordant with the results stated before. Moreover, other parameters, including rates and binding constants, were calculated.

In this work, we present an investigation of the influence of water encapsulated in 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate/methyl laurate and 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate/isopropyl myristate reverse micelles on the enzymatic hydrolysis of 1-naphthyl phosphate by alkaline phosphatase. Our results show that the enzyme is active in the biocompatible reverse micelles studied and that the Michaelis-Menten kinetic model is valid in all systems. We found that both micellar systems studied have a particular behavior toward pH and that the penetration of external solvents into the interfaces is crucial to understanding the effect. Methyl laurate does not disrupt the interface and is not necessary to control the pH value since alkaline phosphatase in the center of the micelles is always solvated similarly. In contrast, isopropyl myristate disrupts the interfaces so that the water and 1-naphthol molecules cannot form hydrogen bond interactions with the polar head of the surfactant. Then, when the water is at pH = 7, the 1-naphthol moves away to the interfaces inhibiting alkaline phosphatase which is not observable when the water is at pH = 10. Our study shows that the concept of pH cannot be used directly in a confined environment. In addition, our research is of great importance in the field of reactions that occur in reverse micelles, catalyzed by enzymes.

Galactopyranoside-Substituted N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Stability, and Catalytic Applications to Alkyne Hydration

A series of novel gold(I) complexes bearing galactopyranoside-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been synthesized via transmetalation of the corresponding Ag(I) complex. Gold(I) complexes have been characterized by NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and elemental analysis. An exhaustive NMR analysis shows that the complexes are not stable when hydroxyl groups are deprotected. Catalytic studies, using the alkyne hydration as a model reaction, indicate that the synthesized complexes are active and reusable.

Catalytic influence of 16-s-16 gemini surfactants on the rate constant of histidine and ninhydrin

The present paper reports the catalytic influence of 16-s-16 (spacer (s) = 4, 5, 6) gemini surfactants on the rate constant of histidine and ninhydrin at 343 K and pH 5.0 using the spectrophotometric technique. The effect of varying amounts of geminis was made on the rate constant of histidine and ninhydrin keeping other constituents constant. Characteristics of the rate constant (kψ ) versus [gemini] depict the effect of surfactants on the rate constant. A systematic explanation about the effect of surfactants is revealed and discussed in the text. The influence of different parameters that includes [reactants], temperature and pH has also been performed on the study. In order to determine the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of pure surfactants and their solution mixtures, conductivity measurement was employed. By using the Eyring equation, activation parameters at different temperatures have been obtained. The resultant data of kψ versus [gemini] plot were rationalized with the pseudo-phase model of micelles.

Noble Metal Nanostructured Materials for Chemical and Biosensing Systems

Nanomaterials with unique physical and chemical properties have attracted extensive attention of scientific research and will play an increasingly important role in the future development of science and technology. With the gradual deepening of research, noble metal nanomaterials have been applied in the fields of new energy materials, photoelectric information storage, and nano-enhanced catalysis due to their unique optical, electrical and catalytic properties. Nanostructured materials formed by noble metal elements (Au, Ag, etc.) exhibit remarkable photoelectric properties, good stability and low biotoxicity, which received extensive attention in chemical and biological sensing field and achieved significant research progress. In this paper, the research on the synthesis, modification and sensing application of the existing noble metal nanomaterials is reviewed in detail, which provides a theoretical guidance for further research on the functional properties of such nanostructured materials and their applications of other nanofields.

Synthesis and sensitive detection of doxycycline with sodium bis 2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate based silver nanoparticle

The monitoring of residual antibiotics in the environment has gained a significant importance for the effective control, because of the high risk to human health. A simple strategy was designed for the green synthesis and detection of doxycycline (Dox) by using anionic surfactant sodium bis 2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate based silver nanoparticles (AOT-AgNPs). The chemical reduction and capping of Ag⁺¹ ions was achieved by sulfonyl and carbonyl functional groups of AOT molecule. The AOT-AgNPs were found to have excellent stability at variable environmental parameters (i.e. temperature, storage period, salt concentration and pH) possibly due to the strong emulsifying nature of the surfactant. Mechanism of interaction between the AOT-AgNPs and Dox was established with UV/visible, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques, which suggests the interaction via aggregates formation. The synthesize probe could detect the Dox within 15 min over a wide range of concentrations from 0.1 to 140μM with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 μM. As proof of strategy, we have illustrated that the AOT-AgNPs also detect Dox in biological and environmental samples with negligible interference and very significant recovery rates. Moreover, non-toxic nature against various tested cell lines (i.e. normal mouse fibroblast (NIH-3 T3) and cancerous non-small lung carcinoma (NCI-H460)) and significant antimicrobial, antibiofilm and biofilm eradicating potential of AOT-AgNPs were provide ideal nanomaterial for further applications.

Water-soluble gold nanoparticles: recyclable catalysts for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds in water

A structure/catalytic activity study of water-soluble gold nanoparticles, stabilized by zwitterionic ligands derived from imidazolium salts, in the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds in pure water at different temperature, as well as their recyclability, was performed. Our studies indicate that the nanoparticles synthesized by an easy, fast and reproducible process, need a short characteristic induction time to restructure the surfaces and make them active. The differences observed in the catalytic activity of the nanoparticles, determined by using the typical Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, are strongly based on the degree of coverage and spatial arrangement of the imidazolium salts on them. Finally, we demonstrate that gold nanoparticles stabilized by non-traditional ligands can be an excellent choice for nitro compound degradation.

AOT Bilayer Adsorption on Gold Surfaces: A Molecular Dynamics Study

A molecular dynamics study was done to reveal the adsorption properties of sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) bilayers on gold Au(111) surfaces. Examining the rotational mobility of AOT molecules, we track that the correlation time of AOT molecules on the adsorbed layer is much higher. The data estimating the diffusive motion of AOT molecule show a substantially lower rate of diffusion (∼10^-10 cm²/s) in the adsorbed layers in comparison to other ones. The results show that an adsorbed layer is more rigid, whereas the outer layers undergo considerable lateral and vertical fluctuations.
