Some open problems in the theory of composites

A selection of open problems in the theory of composites is presented. Particular attention is drawn to the question of whether two-dimensional, two-phase composites with general geometries have the same set of possible effective tensors as those of hierarchical laminates. Other questions involve the conductivity and elasticity of composites. Finally, some future directions for wave and other equations are mentioned. Novel cloaking lamellar structures for a screw dislocation dipole, a circular Eshelby inclusion and a concentrated couple

Using conformal mapping techniques, we design novel lamellar structures which cloak the influence of any one of a screw dislocation dipole, a circular Eshelby inclusion or a concentrated couple. The lamellar structure is composed of two half-planes bonded through a middle coating with a variable thickness within which is located either the dislocation dipole, the circular Eshelby inclusion or the concentrated couple. The Eshelby inclusion undergoes either uniform anti-plane eigenstrains or uniform in-plane volumetric eigenstrains. As a result, the influence of any one of the dislocation dipole, the circular Eshelby inclusion or the concentrated couple is cloaked in that their presence will not disturb the prescribed uniform stress fields in both surrounding half-planes.

Static elastic cloaking, low-frequency elastic wave transparency and neutral inclusions

New connections between static elastic cloaking, low-frequency elastic wave scattering and neutral inclusions (NIs) are established in the context of two-dimensional elasticity. A cylindrical core surrounded by a cylindrical shell is embedded in a uniform elastic matrix. Given the core and matrix properties, we answer the questions of how to select the shell material such that (i) it acts as a static elastic cloak, and (ii) it eliminates low-frequency scattering of incident elastic waves. It is shown that static cloaking (i) requires an anisotropic shell, whereas scattering reduction (ii) can be satisfied more simply with isotropic materials. Implicit solutions for the shell material are obtained by considering the core–shell composite cylinder as a neutral elastic inclusion. Two types of NI are distinguished, weak and strong with the former equivalent to low-frequency transparency and the classical Christensen and Lo generalized self-consistent result for in-plane shear from 1979. Our introduction of the strong NI is an important extension of this result in that we show that standard anisotropic shells can act as perfect static cloaks, contrasting previous work that has employed ‘unphysical’ materials. The relationships between low-frequency transparency, static cloaking and NIs provide the material designer with options for achieving elastic cloaking in the quasi-static limit.

Omnidirectional flexural invisibility of multiple interacting voids in vibrating elastic plates

In elasticity, the design of a cloaking for an inclusion or a void to leave a vibrational field unperturbed by its presence, so to achieve its invisibility, is a thoroughly analysed, but still unchallenged, mechanical problem. The 'cloaking transformation' concept, originally developed in electromagnetism and optics, is not directly applicable to elastic waves, displaying a complex vectorial nature. Consequently, all examples of elastic cloaking presented so far involve complex design and thick coating skins. These cloakings often work only for problems of unidirectional propagation, within narrow ranges of frequency, and considering only one cloaked object. Here, a new method based on the concept of reinforcement, achieved via elastic stiffening and mass redistribution, is introduced to cloak multiple voids in an elastic plate. This simple technique produces invisibility of the voids to flexural waves within an extremely broad range of frequencies and thus surpassing in many aspects all existing cloaking techniques. The proposed design principle is applicable in mechanical problems ranging from the micro-scale to the scale of civil engineering. For instance, our results show how to design a perforated load-bearing building wall, vibrating during an earthquake exactly as the same wall, but unperforated, a new finding for seismic protection.

Nonlinear neutral inclusions: assemblages of coated ellipsoids

The problem of determining nonlinear neutral inclusions in (electrical or thermal) conductivity is considered. Neutral inclusions, inserted in a matrix containing a uniform applied electric field, do not disturb the field outside the inclusions. The well-known Hashin-coated sphere construction is an example of a neutral inclusion. In this paper, we consider the problem of constructing neutral inclusions from nonlinear materials. In particular, we discuss assemblages of coated ellipsoids. The proposed construction is neutral for a given applied field.

Neutral coated inclusions of finite conductivity

We discuss the conductivity of two-dimensional media with coated neutral inclusions of finite conductivity. Such an inclusion, when inserted in a matrix, does not disturb the uniform external field. We are looking for shapes of the core and coating in terms of the conformal mapping ω ( z ) of the unit disc onto coated inclusions. The considered inverse problem is reduced to an eigenvalue problem for an integral equation containing singular integrals over a closed curve L 1 on the transformed complex plane. The conformal mapping ω ( z ) is constructed via eigenfunctions of the integral equation. For each fixed curve L 1 , the boundary of the core is given by the curve ω ( L 1 ). The boundary of the coating is obtained by the mapping of the unit circle. It is justified that any shaped inclusion with a smooth boundary can be made neutral by surrounding it with an appropriate coating. Shapes of the neutral inclusions are obtained in analytical form when L 1 is an ellipse.
