The elemental composition of demospongiae from the Red Sea, Gulf of Aqaba

Trace elements are vital for the growth and development of all organisms. Little is known about the elemental content and trace metal biology of Red Sea demosponges. This study establishes an initial database of sponge elemental content. It provides the necessary foundation for further research of the mechanisms used by sponges to regulate the uptake, accumulation, and storage of metals. The metal content of 16 common sponge species was determined using ICP measurements. A combination of statistical methods was used to determine the correlations between the metals and detect species with significantly high or low concentrations of these metals. Bioaccumulation factors were calculated to compare sponge metal content to local sediment. Theonella swinhoei contained an extremely high concentration of arsenic and barium, much higher (at least 200 times) than all other species and local sediment. Hyrtios erecta had significantly higher concentration of Al, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti and V than all other species. This is due to sediment accumulation and inclusion in the skeleton fibers of this sponge species. Suberites clavatus was found to contain significantly higher concentration of Cd, Co, Ni and Zn than all other species and local sediment, indicating active accumulation of these metals. It also has the second highest Fe concentration, but without the comparably high concentrations of Al, Mn and Ti that are evident in H. erecta and in local sediment. These differences indicate active uptake and accumulation of Fe in S. clavatus, this was also noted in Niphates rowi. A significantly higher B concentration was found in Crella cyatophora compared to all other species. These results indicate specific roles of trace elements in certain sponge species that deserve further analysis. They also serve as a baseline to monitor the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on Eilat's coral reefs.

Subcellular and body distributions of 17 trace elements in the variegated scallop Chlamys varia from the French coast of the Bay of Biscay

Seventeen elements were analysed in the organs and tissues of the variegated scallop Chlamys varia, from the Atlantic coast of France. Concentration levels were determined in scallops of different sizes sampled in contaminated (La Rochelle Bay) and clean (Re Island) sites. Greater concentrations of Ag, Al, Ce, Cr, La, Mo, Nd, Ti, and V were found in the digestive gland while As, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were the highest in the kidneys. In the digestive gland, most of the metals were found in the insoluble fraction while As, Co, Cd, Mo, Ni, and V appeared to be mostly bound to soluble compounds. Among tissues, the adductor muscle always displayed the lowest trace element concentrations. According to size, Ag and Cd showed significantly higher concentrations in larger individuals, while Co and Zn were higher in the smallest ones. According to the sampling area, most of the metals, Ag, Al, Ce, Co, Cu, La, Mn, Nd, Pb, and Zn, showed significantly higher concentrations in La Rochelle Bay compared to the Re Island, reflecting differing inputs from industrial, domestic and harbour activities. However, Cr, Mo, Ni, Ti, and V concentrations did not display significant differences between sites and As and Cd were significantly higher at the Re Island. This study highlighted the ability of the variegated scallop C. varia to concentrate numerous trace elements to high levels, even those reported as poorly bioavailable for marine biota, such as rare earth elements.

Metals in squid, Loligo forbesi, adults, eggs and hatchlings. No evidence for a role for Cu- or Zn-metallothionein

An adult squid Loligo forbesi had the following metals in its liver/digestive gland: Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, Cd, Ba and Pb in the range of 1-110 ppm wet wt. Adult mantle muscle, adult eyes, eggs and hatchlings contained a lesser number of these metals at concentrations above 1 ppm. Chromatographic analysis of non-heat-treated cytosols (in the presence of 5 mM 2-mercaptoethanol) gave no evidence for the presence of copper- or zinc-containing fractions with the molecular weights of mollusc metallothioneins in any of the above tissues. Copper and Zn were bound to either the particulate fraction or to very low molecular weight species.

The permeability of human skin to electrolytes

The epidermis is not only a protective covering against mechanical injury, but presumably protects the body also from diffusion inwards of foreign sub-stances or diffusion outwards of normal constituents of the blood. In a previous paper (Whitehouse, Hancock and Haldane, 1932) it was shown that though the epidermis, so that in this respect the epidermis seems to play the part of semi-permeable membrane. The question of the permeability of the epidermis to various substances which are met with in mining and other operations, or are applied with a remedial object, is of much practical interest, and in connection with the treatment of mining accidents from burning, the apparent impermeability of the outer epidermis to colloidal solutions of tannic acid and ionized solution is of special importance. It is presumably the dense stratum lucidum , of the external epidermis that tends to stop diffusion. The present investigation deals with the question whether the skin is entirely impermeable to electrolytes in solution. The choice of suitable substances for the tests was necessarily limited to elements which are either not present in urine or blood, or present in only very small amounts, and which could also be detected and determined very accurately.

Fluorine Is a Major Constituent of the Marine Sponge Halichondria moorei

Fluorine constitutes about 10 percent of the dry weight of the marine sponge Halichondria moorei. The fluorine occurs as potassium fluorosilicate, which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. A closely related sponge living in the same habitat does not contain any fluorine. The habitat was found to be free of fluorine except for the small amount naturally present in seawater.
